2 Bowls Australia has launched a new competition, promoted as "a revolutionary new fast-paced, dynamic format of competition, which is set to catapult the sport into the 21st century". The new action-packed format incorporates the best traditional elements of the sport and mixes them into an adrenaline-fuelled, action-packed format of the game in a national city versus city competition, known as the Australian Premier League (APL). The nation s newest competition, launched today at the nation s oldest bowling club, Melbourne Bowling Club in Windsor, featured tournament ambassador Mick Molloy, returning to the home of Crackerjack, along with APL players from each of the six inaugural teams. The APL competition, which aims to emulate the success of cricket s T20 Big Bash League by modernising the game to broaden its appeal, is set to be staged from November 19 to 22, under lights at Brisbane s premier bowls facility, Club Pine Rivers. It will be a thrilling start to the league, with the four-day tournament promising rivalry and competitiveness, as teams from five states across Australia, and New Zealand, battle it out for a sixfigure total prize purse of $100,000, second only to the sport s $130,000 Australian Open. The six inaugural teams include Messenger Press Adelaide Endurance (license holder: Bowls SA), XXXX Brisbane Gold (Club Pine Rivers), Blundstone Melbourne Roys (Fitzroy Victoria Bowls and Sports Club), Solargain Perth Suns (Bowls WA), BCiB Sydney Lions (Club Mount Lewis) and the Tower New Zealand Blackjacks (Bowls NZ). Bowls Australia Chief Executive Officer Neil Dalrymple said he was confident the APL would become the world s most popular format of the game. The APL will transform the way lawn bowls is played, viewed and perceived, Mr Dalrymple said. The format has been developed to attract new participants to the sport, provide current fans with an innovative version of competition, and leverage the sport s exposure with a live television product. APL ambassador Mick Molloy said it was great to be returning to the home of Crackerjack to launch this exciting new league. Bowls is no longer seen as a sport for the oldies and this league will continue to grow interest in the sport for the younger generation, who want a fast and action packed version of the game. This is a very exciting development and it might just inspire me to make a sequel - Crackerjack 2: Fast and Furious, Molloy said. Molloy will also lend his support to the Fox Sports coverage in commentary of the APL in November, providing his own spin on the game s newest format.
3 The evolution of the game aims to broaden the appeal of the sport by developing commercial opportunities through television broadcast and providing an alternative format of bowls, to drive an increase in participation at clubs. In a first for the sport nationally, the competition will also be broadcast live on Fox Sports and SKY NZ from 5pm-9.30pm during the four days of competition, providing unprecedented exposure. 10 Taren Point have virtually wrapped up the title of 'club of the year', after capturing the Henselite Champions League NSW title Sunday 29 th September played at Belrose BC in perfect spring conditions and with a who s who of Lawn Bowls. Some of the 120 players involved were Kelvin Kerkow, Steve Glasson, Rex Johnson, Crawford Linton, Cameron Curtis, Carl Healey, Tom Ellem, Neil Burkett, Ray Pearse, Chico Trbara, David Holt, Ben Twist, Mat Pietersen, Aron Sherriff, Mark Berghofer, John Green, Ali Forsyth, Wayne Turley, Jason Stokes, Leif Selby, Jeremy Henry, Mick Harry and a host of Zone 10 reps from Merrylands, Wenty Leagues and The Hills. Round 9 on Saturday morning saw all 10 teams fighting for a last round victory, Merrylands faced the home team Belrose, with a spot in the Final 4 up for grabs. Whilst MAGIC jumped out the boxes to win the 1 st Set of 9 ends 37 shots to 17, it was a different story in the 2 nd Set with the BULLS fighting back to win 42 to 15, which forced a Tie Break of 3 ends on each rink. The Tie Break is won by the Tean scoring the most shots after 9 ends on the Masterboard, with Rex Johnson narrowly missing to convert with his last bowl MAGIC scraped home 9-8 and into the Semi Finals. With this and other matches completed in the final round, the Minor Premiership was taken out by Mt Lewis. The other top 4 teams were Taren Point, Merrylands & Warilla. In the Elimination Final, Merrylands defeated Warilla comfortably in 2 sets, with David Holt s rink proving to be very strong with impressive wins in both sets. In The Qualifying Final, Taren Point jumped out of the blocks early against Mt Lewis and scored a crushing 1 st set win before consolidating their spot in the Grand Final, winning both sets as well. 11 In the Final played Sunday morning, it was Mt Lewis up against Merrylands. In what was expected to be a close match, Merrylands won convincingly both sets, & to set up an epic Grand Final match against the Power from Taren Point. In a truly remarkable match, every bit worthy of a major final, the two juggernaut clubs of our sport Taren Point Power & Merrylands Magic were like two prize fighters slugging it out, standing toe-to-toe, neither giving an inch. Neither club could be separated in the first set with Merrylands almost clinching it, but in the end having to settle for a 21 all draw. The second set was basically a replay of the first, although Taren Point did open up mini breaks at 9-4 and then again at before Merrylands launched yet another comeback. In the end though, a few 'bombs' from the Taren Point skippers, Wayne Turley, Ali Forsyth and John Green was the difference over the last few ends to stave off a determined 'Magic'. So it was the mighty 'Point' though that prevailed in the Grand Final and in doing so kept an incredible record intact for Zone 13 'Sydney South', who has duly won just about every major trophy in NSW over the last two years. Taren Point 'Power', who also recently won the Bowls NSW blue-ribbon title, the 'No 1 State Pennant', proved to all before them, that they are the premier club in the state at present, by dethroning the mighty Merrylands 'Magic' who have held the Champions League title for the last couple of years. Taren Point lead, big Steve Garry (Teach) was named best on ground in the final and a special mention also goes to John Green's second, Ricky Malin. Normally a division two bowler at the Point, Ricky received the big call up to the weekends action after some notable omissions and unavailable players were ruled out. Ricky received devastating news only 30 minutes before the Grand Final started that his father had just passed away. Whilst Ricky had the option of pulling out, he had been waiting in the 'wings' too long for his opportunity to show what he can do at the highest level - and perform he did. He was able to put in a fantastic performance and only narrowly missed out on the man of the match. It was a case of so close for Merrylands Magic, who had won the title in the inaugural year 2012 & also in the final year of the Premier League in 2011 and was shooting for 3 titles in a row. Although it was not to be, congratulations to them for a very consistent and impressive Championship. The other Zone 10 clubs that featured in the Champions League were Wenty Leagues and The Hills. Both clubs found the competition very tough and although finishing in the bottom half of the table, will benefit greatly from the experience and will come out stronger in next year s competition.
