6 LAKE TAHOE BRANCH 160 FOUNDERS DAY OCTOBER 31, years ago... how time flies! Back in the summer of 1990, SIR Area governor Campbell O'Neill from Placerville's Hangtown Branch 29 ran an ad in our local newspaper asking retired men to attend an informational meeting concerning the establishment of a Branch of SIR at Lake Tahoe. The meeting was held at the old 89 Bar & Grill on Emerald Bay Road, and was attended by half a dozen locals and four men from Branch 29. Current Members Bob Peterson, Al Bartley and Ken Koegl spread the word and ran newspaper ads and put out fliers and the response was great. Right away they moved the luncheons to Carrow's Restaurant for several meetings before moving to Timber Cove Lodge (soup and sandwiches served by "Angie's"). On October 31, 1990, the SIR State organization granted probationary status to the new Branch 160. Probation was to continue until the new Branch could show a total membership of 75 men, at which time we would be officially chartered. That happened on April 22, This club has grown to well over 100 members, some of whom are very involved in our activities, and serving on committees and as officers. It is important that we continue to grow in membership, because that makes it a lot easier to find officers and committeemen, and increases our monthly donations so we don't have to sweat that out so much. When one of the many SIR Branches folds up, more often than not it is because the guys won't help out by filling the leadership chairs. Those are a couple of selfish reasons for bringing in new members. But consider this retired and semi-retired men living everywhere from Woodfords and Meyers, through South Lake Tahoe and Stateline, up both sides of The Lake and down in The Valley -- these guys need us as much as we need them! When you invite an acquaintance to be a guest at the luncheon and he decides to join, figure you have done him a big favor. He doesn't need to become real active, if only he enjoys the monthly luncheon as a social event, that's fine. And who knows there may be some real talent among these fellows. So here we are, after 27 years of building... Your Branch 160 Executive Committee 2018 JOHN GERARD, SKIP HEMPLER, DEREK SMITH, GORDON SALAS, JOHN LILYGREN, VERN FICKLIN, RON RATHBUN, JOE KILLIAN, BILL VANHOOSAN, MIKE DAVIS, VAN MARSHALL AND LARRY COFFMAN 6.
7 Branch 160 s 6 th Annual SIR Bowling Tournament at Tahoe Bowl is Now History! The 6 th Annual SIR Branch 160 Bowling Tournament at nearby Tahoe Bowl, scheduled for Friday and Saturday the 15 th and 16 th of September has been successfully completed! My thanks to all the Branch 160 bowlers and their partners and spouses for helping to make this special event a success! I particularly appreciate the efforts of Larry Coffman and Ron Ticknor for their handling of the drawings and other administrative matters. Special thanks go to Bobby Silvius for running brackets for each squad. The tournament was attended by 72 bowlers, 19 of whom (26%) were associated with Branch 160. Twenty nine (40%) of the participants scored prize money. Big winners for our Branch were Larry Coffman and Ron Ticknor who took first place in Division A Doubles, Chrissy Hall (first place Division C Singles plus first place Division C All Events) and Paula Gilmore (third place Division C Singles). Congratulations to all!! Next year I plan to hold our 7 th Annual Tournament at nearby Carson Bowl in Carson City. This house has excellent facilities for our tournament. It has 28 recently upgraded and well-maintained composite lanes and is housed in a building with three fine restaurants (and a full bar ). RV parking is available on-site. Close by is a Marriot Courtyard with whom Carson Bowl has an agreement for very reasonable room rates. Right next door to the Courtyard is Casino Fandango one of Carson City s finest facilities for Nevada style food and entertainment! No more will participants in this tournament who wish to stay over for a night or two have to pay steep room rates. And finally, Carson Bowl is very easy for visitors to find. It is my current intention to maintain the format of the Branch 160 tournament with a Singles and Doubles squad offered on a Friday and Saturday two weeks after Labor Day. Any later in the year than this time might see challenging winter road conditions across the Sierra passes. If there is sufficient interest among SIR bowlers after this first year at Carson Lanes, we might consider adding an additional day with a Team event in the future. OTHER SIR TOURNAMENTS The SIR Tournament at Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood, California, will be held on Tuesday October 17 th. This tournament is for SIRs and their guests and includes doubles, singles and all events. Applications can be found on the SIR website (sirinc.org) or by contacting the Tournament Manager, Sir John Fry at (925) The AREA 22, Sir Bill Tisdall Memorial 23 rd Annual Bowling Tournament will be held on Thursday, November 2 nd and Friday, November 3 rd at McHenry Bowl in Modesto, California.
