Veteran s Newsletter Ringwood District Cricket Association INC January 2010 Issue 5 Around the Grounds It was back to business for most Vets last Sunday. Not too many hamstrings pulled, to the best of my knowledge. Well done to both our Rep teams before Christmas. The Over 50s won in the last over, the Over 60s won comfortably, and the Over 40s were very competitive. Good luck to all teams this Sunday against FTG. Cheers Chris Allan Editor - (monty5@optusnet.com.au) Presentation Night Just a reminder that the Veterans Presentation night is on Friday 5 th March at the Ringwood Bowls Club starting at 7.00pm. Tickets are $30 per head. Start organising your tables now, final numbers must be advised to Marg Stafford ( ) by 2 nd March. Note; All Clubs are required to have at least 2 people in attendance as they will be charged the costs of 2 tickets. Masters 1 Tom Schumann playing in the Over 50s rep side Warranwood vs Nth Ringwood Warranwood hosted North Ringwood on a day that was going to be wet and blustery. With a few Christmas cobwebs to shake off, Neale Wood (WWD) won the toss (finally) and chose to bat. Mike Bellizia struck early and bowled tightly taking 1/15. Dean Jacobs (25) and Scott Hine (43) steadied for WWD, but Brian I Anson broke through in the middle taking 2/17. Dale Gilson (21) and James Standfield (23) pushed the WWD score to 130. On a slow, wet ground, scoring was difficult, and the rain forced players off a couple of times. Nth Ringwood went out to bat and were also in trouble early with Bones Stephens taking the first wicket. Paul Tynall (23) and Brian I Anson (40) pushed the score on, but it was difficult to get value for your shots. Scott Hine came on and took 2/17 with his curling leggies, which evened the match out. At drinks the scores were WWD 59 and Nth 56. Paul Coheady made a good 24 and it all came down to the last couple of overs. Needing 20 off the last 5 overs, Nth passed WWD on the 3 rd last ball of the day. It was a good tight match played fairly Wonga vs Lilydale Wonga was sent in to bat and Lilydale started well with the ball through Sean Ryan 6-1/19 and Tom Schuman 6-0/22. Mick MacLennan and Goldy got together and had a great 2nd wicket partnership Goldy made an impressive 40 and Mick was eventually dismissed for 37. The score had reached the 100 mark and Wonga lost quite a few middle order batsmen trying to push the run rate up. Wonga soon found themselves 7/150 with Gavin Hunt and Anthony Simmons both picking up two wickets. Rod Knee and Magpie batted very well to bat all of the remaining FOR MATCH RESULTS, LADDERS, FIXTURES AND MORE NEWS vetresults.rdca.com
overs out with Rod making 28 not out and Magpie 25 not out. Wonga ended up with a competitive 7/197. Wonga then had a bowl in good bowling conditions and started off very well with Col Perrett & Greg Knee bowling six overs and taking the top figures of 1/17 & 1/23. It became a real family affair with brothers Jack and Rod Knee coming on and also bowling well with Jack picking up 3/16. Scott Boyce batted well for 23 and Ashley Matthews made a impressive 40. John Schlueter chimed in with 1/19 and the Birthday Boy finished off a great afternoon with 2/11 and a great run out. The fielding was excellent with Mick MacLennan taking a great catch to dismiss Lilydale gun batsman Ron Fotia. Lilydale played well but couldn t match the 197 and were dismissed for 146. South Croydon vs Croydon South Croydon collapsed to be 5 for 32 before Bridger, Moore and Russell Bennett added some respectability and finished on 9/128. A terrific effort in the field by South, got them back in the game and after 30 overs, Croydon were behind the required run rate at 6/99. Despite tight bowling at the death from Foden, Wright and Owen Bennett, Croydon had too many wickets in hand and were able to haul in the total in the last over. In the other game, Sth Warrandyte scored far too many runs for Ainslie. Masters 2 East Ringwood vs Wonga East won the toss and sent Wonga in to bat. After Johnny McNamara picked up the early wickets of Clark and Lamour, Wonga were looking a bit shaky at 2/16. At that stage, Ginniff (37) and Bickford (40) got the innings back on track. Despite the ground at East coming up a treat, conditions were not ideal for the fielding side with some rain about. Another of the Aquinas mafia in Andy (could I kick a goal!)whelan did a good job behind the stumps in his first outing in the whites for many years. Coutta and Ian Matheson further consolidated the Wonga innings with a 40 run partnership which saw them finish at 6/167 after the 36 overs. Jim McDonald was the only other multiple wicket taker for East. East began their chase reasonably well but after Peter Clark picked up two wickets in quick succession. East though were never able to regain any momentum and found the going very tough against some tight bowling and good fielding from Wonga. Wickets continued to fall and despite some good late hitting from Old Man Stocky, East could only manage 123 in reply. Clark (3/16) and Bassett (2/14) were the best of the Wonga bowlers. Boronia vs Wonga On a ground best described as lush and slow, Boronia sprung the first surprise of the game by sending out their potential IPL representatives Van Dort and Hickleton. It was a good early contest between bat and ball as the Wonga Park openers were bowling tightly and it was difficult to hit the ball through the field. Just as Van Dort (14) was opening up and returning to his effluent best he was snapped up by a very sharp C&B by Craig Meadows who conceded only 16 runs off his 6 over spell. Deon Voss then bowled his entire repertoire of spin to capture the next 2 wickets for the addition of only 6 runs to have Boronia stalling at 3 for 35. The partnership of Hickleton and Watts, both getting to their 40's, settled the innings until Mark Thomas took off the keeper's gloves and bowled a 3 over spell of menacing leg spin. He finished with the figures of 3 for 10. The lower order got the score to 127 before Rohan Burke closed out the innings by bowling the last 2 batsmen with consecutive balls. Boronia weren't finished with their selection surprises as Big Bad Bustlin' Darryl Watson opened the bowling with an impressive 6 over spell of cagey swing bowling to finish with 1 for 13. Tony Kukuruzovic (2/18), sharing the new ball took 2 important wickets and when he finished his spell Wonga Park were 3 for 32. They quickly fell to 5 for 43 as Rohan Burke was run out by the athletic Brocky going for the extra run off a misfield. Whilst the Wonga wickets were falling, Craig Meadows was batting solidly and building towards his eventual 40. When he and Deon Vos (22) were together the scoreboard was ticking over and they were favorites to reel in the lowly total. The stage was set for man of the match Andrew Watts to take 2 vital wickets. Firstly, he bowled the visiting skipper with a well disguised slower ball and next he had the dangerous Andrew Morris (13) caught behind by the impressive
glove work of champion all rounder Van Dort. Renowned partnership breaker Mark Grice came on to bowl his medium pace wobblers and within 10 balls had taken 2 for 1 and closed the game out for a Boronia win. In other games, Bayswater Park home in a close one against Ranges, while Templeton had 11 overs to spare in defeating Mt Evelyn. Chris Allan Certified Financial Planner SMSF Specialist Advisor Talk to Chris about your superannuation And retirement planning needs Grow Manage Protect Boronia s Cornel Van Dort playing in the Over 50s Rep game Masters 3 No match reports received, but both Montrose and Warrandyte were winners, while Kilsyth beat Norwood with the best division 3 line up you will ever see! Templeton V Mt Evelyn (M2) - Shaun Exton batting turns the ball to leg with non-striker Steve Teakal looking on. Legends Warrandyte vs Mt Evelyn Mt Evelyn won a handy toss and elected to bat in damp conditions. Bluey Dunn and Peter Hawkey batted steadily against accurate bowling until a throw-out by Paul Robinson (side on to the bowlers end from 40 metres) accounted for Bluey. Peter Hawkey continued to hold the innings together as wickets fell to Rob White s straight breaks but when he fell for 27 with the score on 53 in the 22 nd over, Mt Evelyn were in a bit of trouble. Rob White took his 3 rd wicket at a total cost of 17 in the next and his last over, and it was all gloom for Mt Evelyn both weather and innings wise.
Warrandyte bowled well under adverse conditions but Golly Eastham and Chris Thiele began to find the gaps in the field. They put on 81 for an unfinished 6 th wicket with Eastham retiring on 40 and Thiele ending up on 38 as the score finished at 5 / 145 cc. The Warrandyte reply saw Greg Warren and Steve Pascoe at the crease together after the first wicket again fell to a run out. Both pushed on to 41.The 2 nd wicket did not fall until the 30 th over after the target was well within reach and was achieved without further loss. Croydon Ranges v Warranwood After losing a wicket in the first over, Ranges had a solid batting performance on the slow Silcock outfield. Brett Haines (41), Dave Keenan (41) and Bill Stafford (40) were the main contributors in reaching 4/181. In a day were the bat dominated the ball, Warranwood had little difficulty in reaching 2/187 with 3 overs to spare. D Mock (40), Rob Ruffle (40) and Mark Heuston (41) all batted well in reaching retirement. Nth Ringwood v Croydon Trevor Double (Croydon) won the toss and elected to bat on a firm dry wicket. David Heath (18) and Paul Clifton (15) opened up with David finding the boundary on a couple of occasions before skying one and being caught by Cooky. Nat Young (1/5) and Garry Paterson (0/18) bowled tightly. Trevor Double (27) and Barry Jacquier (26) were both very solid before both were trapped in front by Macca (1/20) and Billy Knowles (1/11).Andy Wright gave BJ a life when he ran 48 meters chasing a skied shot only to put him down. Stevo made a solid 16 no and Croydon finished on 6/124. Cooky and Scotty went hard at the bowling and Scotty retired (again) at 41 and Cooky (25) was well caught at slip by Trevor Double of the good bowling of Barry Jacquier (2/21). Grinder (21) kept the runs ticking over and was well supported by Andy Wright (23no). BJ was up to his gymnast tricks in the field and will be quite sore during the upcoming week. The Bulls won quite comfortably reaching 4/129 after 24 overs before the mercy rule was enforced. Warranwood v Mt Evelyn (from Washout round) With Round 3 in November being washed out WWD and MTE rescheduled to Sunday 10 January. Being holiday time some regular players were unavailable but both teams managed to have 11 players and on behalf of the team captains we say thank you to all the players for being available. Mt Evelyn batted first. With safe hands and accurate throwing, WWD held their catches and a Rod Cordwell direct hit run out (side on to the stumps at non striker end) and Rob Ruffle with a throw from fine leg to Mike Nelson (again at non striker end) two run outs were achieved. Top scores for Mt Evelyn were Kevin Dunn (42) & Michael Johnston (41). For Warranwood Kevin Lewis (41) and a final score of 3/163 off 27 overs saw the game declared over and drinks were taken from an esky with real ice on the hill overlooking the ground. Aahhh the serenity!!!gary Paget had the ball magnet in his pocket but could not hold the catches, I am sure he would like someone else to have the magnet next game. And Also From Around the Ground Moca (Ringwood Curator) got the bagging rights when he cleaned bowled Norm Osborne (Ranges V Warranwood Legends game). However Norm may have the last laugh as he manages the bar at Ringwood, so Moca may find it hard to get a cold beer. Big contributors in Boronia s winning batting total were Steve Petkoff and Darryl Watson, who both contributed with golden ducks. Check out the line up at Kilsyth in div 3. With names like Luckman, Unternahrer, Foden, Trollope and Dodge, you
would be pretty confident of compiling a reasonable score. Warranwood s new player, David Mock tweaked his hamstring on the first ball he faced, and a runner was required as well as ice. Welcome to vets cricket David. Croydon stalwart, Barry Jacquier tried to show that he was a gymnast in a previous life by making a spectacular stumble and forward roll whilst making ground after a tight run. Worthy of his spectacular appeals in his halcyon days. A mention of Mark Whitaker (WWD) who managed to hold two catches off the bowling of Mick English much to Mick s relief. (Although some will say one was a gut catch so not a real one!!). After bowling Steve Anderton (WWD), Terry Dunn (MTE) was heard to say to the umpire that it was his first bowled in 5 seasons.. Simon Mattiske (MTE) was welcomed to Veterans cricket with rifle shot crack in his hamstring (probably still echoing around the hills of Mt Evelyn). It was not a nice injury and he had to be carried from the field. After the ice pack treatment it felt better, but do not count on him for selection for a few weeks. (Months?) Afternoon tea at Wonga in Masters 1, saw everyone wishing Goldy a happy 49 th or 59 th birthday with two cakes and stacks of candles. Later on, Wayne Hartley was seen taking a great outfield catch but not putting the parachute out in time to stop running over the cones and the batsman scoring a 6 off the shot. Vets rookie for Sth Croydon, Craig Plant, only scored 5, but took a great chest mark on the boundary to dismiss Darren Croft for only 1. Handy wicket! Representative Games RDCA Vets V Box Hill / Eastern Over 60s The inaugural R.D.C.A. Over 60's Representative game was played against Box Hill Reporter at Cheong Park. Box Hill won the toss and elected to bat and from the outset did not appear to be in any hurry to push the score along. Accurate bowling from Steve Pascoe [1/4 off 6], Rob Webb [1/15 off 6], Mick Gavin [1/21 off 6] and a notably 'ego boosting' [2/12 off 2] from 'Leachy', kept the visitors from cutting loose and they finished with a 'comfortably gettable' 105 from their 36 overs. 'Nice and steady; nothing stupid' was the game plan for Ringwood and this was provide by Mick Gavin [15] and Chris Hartrup [13]. Things changed considerably with the introduction of some very effective leg spin bowling and Ringwood quickly found itself 4 for 38 with a bit of work to do. However, Steve Pascoe and Ian Sharp steadied things nicely and started to find the boundary more frequently, posting the winning run the twenty eighth over. Over 50 s The Over-50 s is always a close contest and BHRDCA batted first. Captain Kim Albiston made 40-retired and the visitors were cruising at 3/96 until an amazing batting collapse where they lost 7 for 9 to be all out for 105. A fantastic comeback by the RDCA and the pick of the bowlers was Bash Westgarth with 3 for 4. Some terrific outfield catching from Steve Teakel didn t do Box Hill any favours. The RDCA were confident of getting the runs but BHRDCA bowlers, Simon Albiston (3 for 23) and Nuttall (3 for 12) were having something to say about that. Great fielding saw this game go down to the wire with the RDCA victorious by one run with one wicket in hand. Their score 9/106 with pick of the batsmen, Tom Schumann, 22 and Rob Ruffle, 21. Over 40 s In the Over 40 s, the RDCA won the toss and batted. Ex RDCA man, Frank McCann was in good touch behind the
stumps taking a couple of good catches and when Shane Keneally took 2 wickets in his fourth over, the RDCA were in trouble at 5 for 56. Out strode the RDCA Captain, Dale Goldsmith who batted with patience to resurrect the home side s batting total with a quality 39. Unfortunately the RDCA s tail didn t wag and they were dismissed for 116. Several players got into the teens but couldn t go on with the job. The BHRDCA innings stared slowly losing a wicket early and the RDCA bowlers were on top. Excellent bowling by Paul Clark (1/11 from 6 overs) and Kevin Smith strangled the BHRDCA batsmen who were 1/16 after eight overs. But Wicketkeeper / Batsman Frank McCann broke the shackles making 31 and Turnbull chipped in with 21. The RDCA bowlers responded and took a couple of quick wickets to have the visitors in trouble at 5/67. BHRDCA Captain Chris Box was starting to hit out and Andrew Davidson was playing a support role until the wicket of the skipper fell. The game was in the balance but Davidson (25 not out) and Anthony Uhr-Henry managed to guide the visitors home with a score of 7/118 in the 35 th over.
