The Blurb Dear readers, Midway Today Issue 5 We, the editors of Midway Today, would like to thank you for reading our newspaper and sending feedback to help us make our newspaper better. Again we would like to remind you that you can send letters to our chief editors, Mr. Orr and Mrs. Schmeelk. From, The Editors, Spandan, Kohl, Cheyene, Dillon. Earth Day By Nidhi Shah, Ariana Jenabzadeh, Isabelle Valiamplackal, and Muhammad Ali. The March Equinox Earth Day was first suggested by John McDonell (from the United States) in 1969 in the UNESCO conference on the environment. The United Nations began an Earth Day celebration on the March Equinox ( March 20 th ) and continued the celebration every year. The main purpose of the day is to promote environment awareness. Earth Day is still celebrated on two days; the March Equinox and April 22 nd. April 22 nd usually involves more schools. Earth Day is intended for all of us to recognize how we influence our limited resources from our planet. There are often activities, campaigns, and events scheduled on this day to promote awareness of Earth issues. You could choose to stay in a local event or start your own. Some ideas you can put in motion are helping your parents recycling garbage, pick up trash (litter) on the playground, or even plant a tree!april 22 nd The first Earth Day was April 22 nd, 1970, marked the beginning of the modern environment movement. Approximately 20 million Americans, especially on college campus, participated in a national teach in on environmental issues and protests against environmental issues but also of bringing separate groups that had been fighting separately against issues including oil spills, pollution from factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, the loss of wilderness, etc. Since then, Earth Day was always celebrated on April 22 nd. How you can celebrate: Teachers let children do fun activities. We learn about recycling and how to keep our environment safe and clean. When we go to science we get to go water the plants. This is what we do at midway!

Should Video Games be Allowed at School? By: Jaxon Valdivia and Brooks Brackett Many teachers at Midway Elementary do not allow video games in class. Should video games even be allowed at school? Well we interviewed a few people to find out, and here are their opinions. First, we interviewed Jackson Hill in Mrs. Long s class. He said, Yes, because when there is indoor recess people want to play video games instead of board games. I sometimes play my video games, and it is not a distraction to the other kids. Yes, safety patrol should play their video games while they wait. We also interviewed Kohl Yearwood in Mrs. Benton s class. He said, Yes, because kids need a break after learning, also because I love to play my video games. It s not a distraction because we turn our volume down. Safety patrol should not play their video games because they need to make sure kids are following rules. Next we interviewed Mrs. Bennett, she said, No, it stunts their creativity, it effects their growth, ruins their attention span, and their video games might get stolen and their parents won t like that. So the majority of the people we interviewed said, Yes! Science Night By: Arya Akbarshahi and Humza Fawwaz Hello, this is Arya and Humza reporting on science night. So what is science night? Science Night is an event that was done a long time ago and they brought it back a few days ago. On science night you get to learn a lot about science. People experienced Magnetism, Kinetic Energy, Force, and much more. We even interviewed Mrs. Romig. Let s see what she has to say about it. She said she was so fascinated with all the kids who came. She expected 100 people but 135 people came. Eight centers were organized. In all, she spent $300 to make this possible. Kindergarten did liquid experiments. First grade did playing with magnets. Second grade did Physical and chemical changes. Third grade did layers of soil. They used cookies and pudding to make it. They finally got to eat it. Fourth grade did forces with rollercoaster s they made. Fifth grade did chemical movement and erosion. Mrs. Romig did light, secondary and primary colors. They also had 6 Solvay volunteers and translators for parents who do not speak English. Luckily they will also do this next year.

The History of Easter By: Isabelle Valiamplackal and Ariana Jenabzadeh For many people with Christian faith, Easter is the most important holiday in the year. It takes place in the culmination of the religious season called Lent, and the day in which Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. In addition to its religious importance, it s also a popular secular holiday. The first recording of an Easter feast was written in the 2 nd century, but it probably goes back even further! From an early theory, they say they developed Easter from a Pagan holiday celebrating Easter. But there s still one question: Why is Easter celebrated with BUNNIES? They re an ancient symbol for fertility and life. In some parts of Germany, a COOCOO BIRD delivers the Easter eggs. In different parts of Germany, though, they wait for the Easter Fox, Chick, Rooster, or Stork. One of history s most lavish Easter traditions were developed in the 19 th century in Russia. They began giving gem-encrusted eggs. In the U.S, they create over 90 million chocolates for Easter. They also make 16 billion jellybeans. Easter ranks as one of our most celebrated holidays. Bet you DIDN T KNOW! ICC Cricket World Cup We re writing about the ICC Cricket World Cup. But before we tell you about the cricket league here are the basic rules. Cricket is a bat and ball game played by two teams of eleven players each on a field at the center which is a rectangular 22 yard pitch. Each team takes its turn to bat attempting to score runs, while the other team fields. Each turn is called an inning. The equipment you need to play is 22 people, field, cricket bat, cricket ball, 2 wickets, 6 stumps, 4 bails, gloves, although safety gear like a helmet and pads is an option. The ICC cricket world cup takes place every four years. In the year 2015, the cricket world cup started on Saturday, February 14, 2015 and ended on Sunday, March 29, More than a hundred teams compete in a bat and ball game called cricket. The top 14 teams will be promoted to the world cup. This year s world cup is the 2015 ICC cricket world cup. So far, the finals ended with Australia winning the world cup. Australia vs. New Zeland was the big match. Australia crushed them by 7 wickets! This match took place on Sunday, March 29. Betting in other countries was common at that time even though it was illegal. By: Caleb Apinis, Christopher Bradburn, Shrey Dhamal, Chida Chitta

Greek Culture by: Camille, Thomas, Jose Greece has been a really popular place mostly known for the Greek gods. Here are some facts about Greece. Did you know that. Christmas in Greece is celebrated by eating Kourambeithes. Kourambiethes are a special type of cookie with a unique type of recipe. The next fact is still about Greek food. This is another cookie; its name is Melonmakarono It s made of flour, olive oil and honey. They are mostly egg-shaped. Try to think of an egg covered in something fried. Souvlaki is pretty much food on a skewer in America. A Souvlaki is made of pork and lemons on a skewer with garlic bread on the side. This fact is about clothing in Greece. Men wore tunics made of leather and that tunic was called a chiton. Women wore leather draped around the body of the woman herself these are called peplos. I hoped you enjoyed this article on Greek Culture. See you next time! School Food Scoop Do you think school food is healthy? Is it homemade? Ask no more the school food scoop is here. We asked a few of the staff here at Midway if they thought the school food was healthy. This is what they think. (us)do you think the lunch menu should be changed? (Mrs.Benton) They should always have new things. (us)do you think the lunch menu should have more choices of drinks? (Mrs.Benton) More healthy choices of drinks would be nice.

(us) Why do you think they took muffin tops off the menu? (Mrs.Gelfand) It was not healthy. It was like having dessert for breakfast. (us) Do you think the lunch food is healthy for the kids.(mrs Gelfand ) I think it got unhealthy to healthy. We are going to interview Mrs. Long right now. (us) Do you think the lunch ladies do a good job cooking their food? (Mrs. Long) I think they do a great job serving the lunch food. (us) What do you think about the lunch food? (Mrs.Long ) I think it is great for the kids that by their lunch. (us) do you think more kids by their lunch or pack their lunch. (Mrs. Pam) I think they are starting to bring their lunch food more than buying the lunch food. (us) What is your opinion about lunch food? (Mrs. Pam) We think it is very good and more kids should come eat the lunch food. I hope you learned something! Eat More School Food!!!!!!
