3 Planning While summer might be the season most associated with vacation, winter also is a great time of year to leave everything behind. But planning a winter vacation is different than planning one for the summer. The following are a few pointers to ensure your winter escape goes off without a hitch. * Double check school schedules before booking a trip. Families should check with their local school district to confirm when the school or schools are having their winter break. College students often have longer winter breaks, so they should be free to travel. But confirm the dates of their winter break as well. No parent wants to book a trip only to discover that vacation is forcing a child to miss school and possibly fall behind in the classroom. a winter vacation * Pack delayed by things like snowstorms or poor road conditions. accordingly. When vacationing in the winter at a ski resort or another area with winter weather, rent a sport utility vehicle or a car with all-wheel or four-wheel drive. Such rentals may be more expensive than renting economy cars or mid-sized sedans, but they re also more capable of handling winter roads and winter weather. 4 4 Sunday, October 18, 2015 Winter Sports Guide 2015 The Post-Star, Glens Falls, NY Safety first for winter sportsmen Winter is a special time of year for sportsmen. The great outdoors beckons men and women in the wintertime, when skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and sledding are just a few of the many cold weather activities to entice athletes out of their homes. Though winter sports can help fend off cabin fever, those who don t exercise certain safety precautions might find themselves dealing with another kind of fever. Go FAT or Open Mon.-Fri. 10am-6pm, Sat. 9am-5pm Sun. 12-5pm (518) Cold weather can leave men, women and children susceptible to illness or injury if they aren t careful. The following are a few safety tips for winter sportsmen who want to make the most of the coming winter sports season. Clothing Inadequate clothing is one of the easiest ways a winter sportsmen can fall victim to illness or Stay Go Stay Get Out & Enjoy Winter! Rick s Bike Shop 368 Ridge Rd, at Quaker Rd., Queensbury ricksbikeshop.com HOME! injury. But the right clothing can go a long way toward ensuring this winter sports season is fun and illness- and injury-free. * Wear protective head gear. Protective headgear can help sportsmen avoid colds and head injuries. When venturing outdoors in the winter, always wear a protective wool ski cap. Most body heat is lost through the head, but wool caps help your body retain warmth on cold days and nights. In addition, sportsmen should always wear protective headgear when skiing, sledding, snowboarding or playing ice hockey. Even the most experienced sportsmen can suffer a head injury when playing a winter sport, but the appropriate headgear can prevent head injuries to veteran and novice athletes alike. * Dress in layers. Dressing in layers is another way to stay warm and prevent illness in the winter months. Kids are especially susceptible to cold weather, so parents should dress them in one more layer than they dress themselves. When wearing scarves, sportsmen should tuck their scarves in so they don t get tangled with sporting equipment. * Remove drawstrings from kids clothing. Drawstrings on winter hats, overcoats and pants can prove harmful to children. These drawstrings can easily get tangled and lead to strangulation. Parents should remove all drawstrings from kids winter clothing before kids participate in winter sports. Ice skating & hockey Winter is a great time to go ice skating or play some hockey. However, ice sports like skating and hockey can be especially dangerous, and it s wise for adults and children to be as cautious as possible when getting in some ice time. * Beware of thin ice. Ice that forms on moving waters, including rivers and creeks, is never safe enough to skate on. Such waters should always be avoided no matter how thick the ice may appear. When going ice skating or playing hockey outdoors, only do so on waters that are supervised and have been tested and approved for skating. * Skate with the crowd and never skate alone. Skating alone might give you all the room in the world to perform a

5 figure eight, but skating alone leaves you with no backup should the ice break and you fall in or if you injure yourself in a fall. When skating, never skate against the crowd. Skiing & snowboarding Skiing and snowboarding are immensely popular in the winter, but that popularity should not overshadow how dangerous these activities can be. * Get instruction. Ski resorts typically require guests with no previous skiing or snowboarding experience to get lessons before they can take to the slopes. These lessons are a must for novice skiers and snowboarders and even those athletes with no recent experience on the slopes. Sledders, be they children or adults, should always sled feet-irst or sitting up. * Be especially cautious when entering or exiting the ski lift. Ski lifts pose a significant injury risk, so skiers and snowboarders should always be attentive when entering or exiting the lift. * Don t allow young children to snowboard. Many of today s youngsters prefer snowboarding to skiing. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children seven years of age and younger should not snowboard. * Don t be in a hurry. Skiing or snowboarding too fast increases the chance you will lose control and cause injury to yourself or others. Go at a slower, more relaxed pace and take in all of the beautiful scenery along the way. Sledding Sledding is a great way to have some fun in the winter snow. But even though sledding is often seen as a carefree activity, it can be risky as well. * Never sled near traffic. Sledding near traffic is a definite no-no, as it risks the lives of sledders and motorists alike. Always make sure you sled in an insulated area far away from roadways. * Sled feet-first or sitting up. Sledding feet-first or sitting up greatly reduces a sledder s risk of suffering a head or neck injury. Never sled while lying down head first. * Never sled on ice. Sledding on ice can cause injuries and make it difficult to control a sled. When sledding, only do so on packed snow. * Do not allow a sled to be pulled by a vehicle. Being pulled by a vehicle while on a sled might seem like fun, but it s nearly impossible for oncoming traffic to see a sledder behind a vehicle, and it s very easy for the sled to fishtail into oncoming traffic. $ Alldaylearntoskior snowboard Weekends & Holidays Up to three 1 1/2 hour lessons Rentals Learning Area Lift Ticket FULL SERVICE SKI SHOP OFFERING DEMOS 30 MINUTES EAST OF SARATOGA. 77 Intervale Road, Greenwich, New York (518) info@willardmountain.com willardmountain.com The Post-Star, Glens Falls, NY Winter Sports Guide 2015 Sunday, October 18,

6 6 Sunday, October 18, 2015 Winter Sports Guide 2015 The Post-Star, Glens Falls, NY Ice Skating has impressive lineage While ice skating is now known as a recreational activity, it was born out of necessity thousands of years ago. A new study by Federico Formenti, a human biomechanics specialist at the University of Oxford, suggests that ice skating was developed in Finland more than 5,000 years ago. Researchers surmised that southern Finland was the one area of northern Europe that was flat Your enough to make traveling by skates worthwhile. It is believed that ancient Finns used animal bones tied to their feet to coast across the frozen landscape and reduce travel time when daylight during cold, winter months was a limited commodity. The first ice skates employed straps and animal bones, mainly horse bones, in their design. The oldest pair of skates found dates HEADQUARTERS SEE THE NEW MODELS TODAY! ATVS - SNOWMOBILES Sales - Service - Parts & Accessories Rt.149 & Bay Rd,Lake George,NY OPEN 7 DAYS 10am-6pm back to about 3,000 B.C. and were discovered at the bottom of a lake in Switzerland. An old Dutch word for skate is schenkel, which means leg bone. Historians also believe that ancient peoples who used ice skates relied on residual animal fat left on the bone as well as wooden poles to propel themselves across the ice -- much in the way a crosscountry skier would coast across the snow. The gliding style of ice skating now associated with seasoned athletes likely didn t begin until metal blades were introduced around the 13th century. By the 18th century, ice skating was well known and enjoyed throughout much of Europe. As people emigrated to America, they brought their ice skating customs with them. Also at this time, ice skating started to become subdivided into different specialties, such as figure skating and speed skating. The first instructional book written concerning ice skating was published in London in 1772 and authored by a British artillery lieutenant named Robert Jones. It was designed for men to learn the basic positions of skating and how to achieve circles and figure eights. While ice skating may have originated in Europe, the style of skating that evolved into figure skating was developed and honed by American Jackson Haines. Haines eschewed the rigid British style of figure skating that was merely tracing shapes for a style that included elements of ballet and other dance to offer fluidity of movement. Haines style was accepted by many skaters in Switzerland and the Netherlands, and eventually he established the Vienna School to teach others this artistic style of skating. Haines died young, but his teaching methods at the school prevailed and led to the development of the International Skating Union in The Union drafted the first official set of codified figure skating rules. Modern figure skating has four Olympic divisions, including ladies singles, men s singles, pair skating and ice dancing. The International Skating Union also recognizes speed skating on a traditional long track as well as short track speed skating as the main offshoots of the ancient form of ice skating.

7 Fill snow days with activities and fun Just because snow days are unexpected, that does not mean parents can t plan for them. Create a snow day entertainment bin. Rather than having kids spend the day watching television or playing on their tablets, parents can establish a snow day entertainment bin to encourage their kids to make the most of the day off. The bin can include board games, books, building block sets, paints, and other crafts. Get cooking. Another way to fill the day is to have children participate in making meals. A snowy day is a great time to prepare meals for the rest of the week, as well as tinker with hearty, belly-filling recipes. Older children can help with cutting vegetables and meats, while younger kids can add seasonings to pots and mix ingredients. Involve the kids in choosing which meals to cook. Baking bread is another fun activity and enables kids to sculpt dough and then eat the fruits of their labors. Go the movies. If roads are passable, consider a trip to the movie theater, where you can enjoy a matinee. Bring a few friends along and make it a fun-filled outing. Catch up on cleaning. Cleaning may not be the most exciting snow day activity, but it might be the most productive. Children can spend time sorting through toys and belongings in their rooms. Create snow art. Fill squeeze or squirt bottles with some water and food coloring. Allow kids to go out in the yard and create some pictures with the snow as their canvas. Take a nature walk. Grab those boots and insulated pants and head outdoors. A walk in the brisk, cold air can boost spirits and introduce kids to the beauty of winter landscapes. Take the camera along and encourage kids to snap pictures of their favorite vistas. 11th Annual Saratoga County Winter Restaurant Week December 4-10 DiscoverSaratoga.org/Restaurant Week Prixixemenus consisting of threeitems for one priceplustax & tip!
