3 Our time in office has come to an end We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas to all. This month is our last one as your Chapter Directors. We have enjoyed the opportunity to lead the Chapter these last twenty-six months. It s amazing how much organizational information and knowledge you pick up over a period of time and how much we have learned about GWRRA. You can be a member for years but never know all of the facets of the organization. But, with our schedule as busy as it is, we look forward to sitting on the other side of the podium next year. As many of you are aware Bob and Kate have decided to step down from their Assistant Director positions. They have been very supportive and we greatly appreciate their help over our tenure in office. Another person who has been a great help is Dottie Benware, serving as our MEC and Sunshine Lady. Dottie will also be stepping down as the Chapter s MEC. Her new full time job is keeping her extremely busy. Peter & Marielle are continuing on as our Web Masters. Peter puts a fair amount of effort into keeping the Web Page rolling along. I want to personally thank him for taking that responsibility over earlier this year and helping with the conversion to our new format. Bob and Kelly are continuing as our Rider Educators, in addition to their Chapter of the Year and Motorcycle Awareness responsibilities. They have done a great job and we thank them for their efforts. In the interim Steve & Gary will be taking over as interim leadership for the Chapter I hope that members of the Chapter will seriously consider stepping up to take over these open positions. Steve & Gary are pretty busy with their District responsibilities. I appreciate them taking over so that Linda and I can continue with caring for our grandkids while their father is deployed in the Middle East as well as our other commitments.

4 Chapter N has always been a leader in the NY District and we hope it will continue in that role but only with the help and participation of its members. So think about getting a little more involved to keep the Chapter moving forward. Peter & Linda Chapter Directors NY-N

5 December /12 GWRRA Rider Education Chapter N Rider Educators Bob and Kelley Brown Good news We will be offering a Trike course in April John Van Deusen, the District and Region Educator, has reserved an instructor for the class. So what do we do until April? We plan to present Rider Education, Member Enhancement and Leadership topics in January, February and March. The dates are not completely finalized but we will be shooting for January 23 rd, February 13 th and March 12 th. In addition we are trying to schedule a First Aid and CPR class on January 9 th. Look for a special regarding the First Aid and CPR class. The January Newsletter will have our final training schedule for the first quarter of Here is the list we will start with for lesson topics: Team Riding, Motorcycling for the Mature Rider, Crash Scene Response, Night Riding, Riding with New Riders, Co-Rider, Trailering, Member Benefits, Fun Activities, Planning a Chapter Event and Motivating Volunteers. For those Chapter N members that have migrated to warmer climates the below article may help you remember to watch out for Alligators. For the rest of us we have some time until it warms up a bit.

6 Motorcycle Consumer News December 2015 Street Strategy by David L. Hough Slabs of truck tire tread can bite you if you re not prepared. You re on the way home from a great weekend at the races, and you re hyped. But for this secondary highway on a Sunday afternoon, you re amazed at the truck traffic. You know that truckers have a very limited view in their mirrors, so you stay out of their blind spots, and maintain a speed that doesn t encourage any truckers to pass you. You move to the left lane to get around a gaggle of trucks. But just as you are about to pass them, the last truck in line suddenly swerves in front of you. You re not sure whether the driver saw you but didn t care, or didn t see you at all. You re a little miffed at the sudden lane change, so you flip on your high beam. Suddenly you smell an acrid smell and hear a thumping sound. You realize that one of the tires on the truck s trailer is about to disintegrate. You roll off, but before you can open up much separation, there is a loud hollow whump and a long section of tire tread is flung back toward you. It s huge and flailing around, and it suddenly slams into the front of your bike, shattering your front fender, raking the right leg of your riding pants, and knocking off the right saddlebag. You ease the bike toward the shoulder to inspect the damage. Your front fender is in tatters, one leg of your pants is seriously abraded, and the right saddlebag is entirely missing. Looking back, you see the remnants of your saddlebag and gear being pulverized by a passing truck. Truck tires do disintegrate, and some of the massive treads are reinforced with steel wires. Not only are these rubber alligators big and heavy, the jagged edges of the wires can easily slice through plastic, leather or skin. Your best protection against being knocked down or chewed up is to avoid riding close alongside or behind a truck. And if you detect any abnormal thumping or the odor of burning rubber, take immediate action to get out of the way. Thank you for supporting Chapter N and Rider Education. Again the official meeting starts at 7:00pm, dinner starts at 6:00pm. This month s meeting is November 20th.
