O R G For many years, I have extended my metal detecting season by taking my detector on vacation. My claim to fame has been my luck and provenance, which provided me with great revolutionary War finds and a silver and gold cache. The 500 rings and thousands of coins and a few Rolex watches I found were mostly while vacationing. You could say it was a Double Vacation. Nothing beats looking into your sand scoop to see the glitter of gold or the sparkle of a diamond. My menu for success has been to research areas and take my metal detector to the great beaches in Florida and the Caribbean where the rich and famous vacation. The deep, fluffy sand in these areas is perfect for finding buried treasures. I particularly like cruise vacations, which are cost effective. Traveling with my metal detector is easy. I break it down, and put it in my checked luggage with a backpack. 4

5 BOB LAVOY Leaving the cruise ship, my metal detector, sand scoop and accessories are in my backpack, which keeps me light and portable with a low profile. I research and find out the best way to get to the best beaches at the best price. Rather than a taxi, a local bus can save you a lot of money on your destination of choice. I study the anatomy of the beach to figure out the most productive areas to search. I watch for beach cuts and depressions where coins and jewelry can accumulate. I love using the MX Sport for beach and water hunting. I hunt the sand and when things warm up, I move to the water to cool off and search for more treasure. Many times while in the water, people think I m listening to a radio with my earphones, when I m actually hearing target signals. This is all a part of the low profile I like to keep. The oldest gold coin I found is Roman, dating back to 400 AD. The coin has special meaning and I had it put on a pendant for my wife. I sold many rings over the years with the top ring, a 7 Carat blue sapphire, selling for $10,000. I think the greatest thing you get from metal detecting is your health. It gets your body moving and helps keep you young. Your treasures are just another benefit. Bob Lavoy Northeast Metal Detectors 5

O R G RV ing and metal detecting after retiring 13 years ago My name is Dwight Reed from Vista, California. I m 72 years young and I ve been detecting now for 13 years since I retired from working. I like to think of the old saying: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. I believe that everyone needs some motivation in life and something to look forward to. So many people are locked into a lifestyle and environment that just not allow for exposure to new and different ideas. Everyone needs an interest and a hobby. I think those of us who enjoy and respect the outdoors enjoy the hobbies that put us there. As we learn and gain experience knowledge and hopefully a little wisdom, we begin to find detecting enjoyable to pass on to others and teach others how to enjoy the things in life we find so comforting. The more we teach and help others, the more we feel like we have a reason and self-satisfaction that we have improved not only ourselves but all those with whom we have shared and become more confident and a better person. You pick a hobby like metal detecting, learn about it with an open mind and go for it. Don t expect to get rich. Metal detecting is an excellent way to enjoy nature and learn about the history in your area. And it s always nice to see a little silver or gold in the bottom of your scoop once in a while. Treasure hunting is diffcult to define because it means different things to different people. Basically it is the search and recovery of anything that has value to you. If you are new to metal detecting, I welcome you to a recreation that will give you many years of enjoyment, exercise and a I m up to 9 boxes of good treasures. Just over 700 rings to date. deeper appreciation of the outdoors. Better detecting results are typically dependent on several key factors research, a high quality metal detector, experience, and of course a little bit of luck never hurts. I believe that in the first month I detected, I probably put over 50 hours into it before I started to understand what I was doing and what I was hearing. I think this is a reasonable 6

8 MY TAKE ON THE MX7 DJ YOST Where to start? Well, I know it likes silver coins! One of the first tests I took it to was a seeded hunt in South New Jersey a few months ago. It held its own with some of the top machines there. I found over 20 silver coins plus some jewelry! Now, that s not really my style of hunting but I really enjoyed that event. What I m used to are the fields and private backyards going to be my go to coil with the 7. I can t stress enough how great the separation and depth is with it. All coils for the MXSport will work with the 7. Another site I took it to was a spot where the Sport dug out over s buttons. The targets started to slow up after a few visits so I tried out the MX7. Again I was impressed, running the Ultimate 13, it managed to get another 20 buttons. One of them was some type of beautiful old mosaic button! DJ cleaned up at a seeded hunt of older homes. I recently took my MX7 to some sites I ve hit in the past with the MXT and MXsport. I wasn t expecting much, but this machine really seemed to come through. Like the MXSport, the MX7 likes tiny targets. It found a real nice old 10k child s rose gold ring at a site where multiple high end machines have missed. With its light weight, I was able to swing all day with a full side to side swing without any fatigue. I put the Detech Ultimate 13 on mine and feel it s probably Amazing vintage mosaic button! There were a few times I actually forgot I was swinging the 7 and thought it was my Sport. I m not sure how that s even possible, as it s bright ORANGE; but power-wise, these machines are very similar. It seemed to grab targets I previously missed. The MX7 felt so light to me, I was off and swinging and in the zone in no time! I can honestly say for the price range this machine is in, I don t think there is another White s machine that is comparable. Great work as always, Whites! I thoroughly enjoy this machine! Tiny rose gold childs ring pulled from a well hunted site DJ Yost is a member of White s Field Team and is active on Instagram and Facebook. 8

10 DEALER SPOTLIGHT F O R M O R E G R A P H I C I m Travis Bauer, I ve been a metal detector dealer for the last 10 years, but a treasure enthusiast my whole life. Along with my life long friend Josh Turpin and brother Tyler Bauer, we founded High Plains Prospectors, Kansas City s premiere one-stop shop for all metal detecting and gold prospecting needs. As a child I was always hunting and digging for hidden treasures and as a teenager I would never miss an episode of Gold Prospecting with George Buzzard Massie, dreaming of finding my own lost treasure one day. It all started the day I walked into the local pawn shop, sitting in the corner was an old White s Coinmaster. It was pretty beat up, the audio barely worked, but I couldn t put it down and I was spending countless hours detecting or researching locations. It didn t take long to realize that this was the beginning of a life long passion. From the beginning, I had the gumption to find metal detecting sights related to the Bleeding Kansas or the Border War. I live smack dab in the middle of what was a series of violent political confrontations in the United States between 1854 and 1861 involving anti-slavery Free-Staters and pro-slavery Border Ruffan. Quantrel, and a gang of Missouri Bushwackers crossed over to Kansas and raided, looted, and torched the town of Olathe Kansas, the town my shop is located in. I love researching the locations of where these Bushwackers and Jayhawkers had engaged in these historical scuffes. In 2008 Josh and I, along with a few other friends, started The 10

11 HIGH PLAINS PROSPECTING Pet Ranch, a large scale dog boarding facility in Johnson County, Kansas. While this was hard work, we managed to find some good employees to run the business so it allowed us to find an ample amount of time to metal detect. I think it all started like most dealers. I figured that if we became dealers, we could have access to better equipment. At this time High Plains Prospectors was a side business, and we started selling detectors out of our 2-room offce that was located on the second story of a lawn and landscape business. We discovered that one of the best ways to reach a growing number of people who are into metal detecting was through YouTube videos. To date, we have 107 videos with over 12,000 followers. With the help of Youtube and local metal detecting clubs, news spread quickly that there was a new group selling metal detectors in town. People were showing up to our offce randomly, I couldn t figure out how people were finding us. I can remember having to help an older gentleman up the stairs to our offce to show them detecting gear. Also our online and call order business was picking up considerably. Several times a day we were having to carry large packages up and down these stairs. It came to a point that it was obvious we were no longer a part-time business, we were going to need to move to a larger location with a retail front and a shipping warehouse along with it. Josh Turpin found us the perfect location in a bustling shopping center. I m really proud of our retail shop. Many companies these days rely on selling online only. You don t need that much room if you re not a retail seller. We have a great following of White s Detectorists in our area and we pride ourselves on having one of the largest selections of metal detectors and gold prospecting equipment in the midwest. I would like to thank those who have supported us through the years. I feel so fortunate to be able to make a living doing what I m passionate about. Don t hesitate to pick up the phone if you have any questions regarding White s new line of detectors, shovels, pouches and bags. I would love to help you find what you re looking for and answer any questions. We here at High Plains Prospectors wish you a happy and successful New Year in Dig Away, Travis Bauer High Plains Prospectors 11
