5 Looking Back Church Visiting Group Englesea Brook Chapel and Museum near Alsager, Cheshire On Tuesday 17 th July 2018 a group of 15 visited this fascinating and beautiful place, set in a small hamlet in rural Cheshire. We travelled by minibus and were given a guided tour, tea/coffee and biscuits and a talk on the beginnings of Primitive Methodism, which functioned without ordained/licensed preachers and services could take place anywhere; even in open fields. We learned that it was a very "Grass Roots" movement and was founded in the early 19th century in Englesea Brook hamlet. It was influenced by the social and economic factors of the day. and is a milestone of social history relating to an age when most people were disenfranchised, even after the 1832 Reform Act, and literacy was spreading rapidly. We learned that a Malter was a benefactor and the Temperance Standpoint was part of a boycott of the practice of paying wages partly in tokens, which could be exchanged for alcohol in pubs owned by the employers. The Primitive Methodists preferred cash. We also visited the churchyard opposite to the chapel, where the founding father of the movement, Hugh Bourne, and some of the early congregation are buried. The visit was organised by Philippa FitzPatrick. Report by Walter FitzPatrick. On Sunday September 2 nd some Committee members attended the Artisan Market at the Governors House in Cheadle Hulme. Here Shirley Cawthra and Barry Richards chat with a visitor.
