2 Coaches Corner with Peter German 1. From all reports the pre-season has been pretty tough and a step up from previous seasons. As the Senior Coach, how have you evaluated the pre-season period? The pre-season was designed to build up a solid fitness base plus just as importantly learn a new style of play. Luke Boyd has been outstanding in his role as Head Fitness Coach. The players have been required to commit more time to their physical preparation so hopefully we will see positive results with the squad new players to the club this season, how have you viewed the changes to the playing list? Being my 1st season I don t have any thoughts on the previous list. However the 22 new players have blended very well with the existing playing group. The most exciting aspect for the club is the majority of the new players are 18, 19 or 20 year olds. Williamstown Football Club now have the opportunity to build an exciting decade with many of these players. 3. A new coaching staff have been appointed this season. How have you assessed their contribution and support for you thus far and what qualities do they bring to Williamstown? Firstly to assemble Adam Potter, Ross Fisher and David Bourke as Senior Assistant Coaches is a great coup for the club. They all possess an outstanding commitment to their roles and all have experience and display high levels of enthusiasm. We have also gained some excellent new support coaches in Todd Clark and Cory La Forgia who will help form a strong coaching group with Darren Caddy and Shane Murphy who were involved last year. 4. What qualities and characteristics will supporters and members notice from a side coached by yourself? I m quite pleased to say I coach more defensively than I played, however we hopefully will play a far more structured style of play. Players will need to understand their roles and knowledge of our ball movement as predictability is vital to our cohesive style of play. Finding the balance between attack and defence will always be the key to our success. 5. In your coaching career over the last 16 years you have had a hands on role at AFL Clubs Hawthorn, West Coast Eagles, Fremantle and Melbourne. How have you viewed the Western Bulldogs and where do you believe they are as a club as they aim to break a 56 year premiership drought? It s been 12 years since I was at Hawthorn and football has changed dramatically in that period. In saying that all clubs are in different phases with their list and I would say that the Western Bulldogs and Rodney Eade have built this list over many years now. What I can say is that the players and staff are a professional outfit and are a driven group. 6. Coaching an aligned VFL club is an enormous challenge. How do you balance the development needs of the Western Bulldogs with the desire to contest finals consistently with a view to winning premierships at Williamstown? This is the toughest past of the job. The most important area for me is communication to both parties. If development is rapid with the Bulldog players then they will certainly help bring success to Williamstown but as I have already indicated to all parties concerned, the players who play their roles consistently well will get the good looks at selection. 7. You had great premiership success at Subiaco in the WAFL. What similarities do you see between Subiaco and Williamstown Football Clubs? They are both in very similar positions as both are financial and well administered plus both have over 100 years of tradition. The player group at Subiaco were an outstanding group who were loyal to the Club and totally driven to succeed. I m still finding out more each week about our player group but the similarities between the two clubs off the field is very uncanny. 8. As we head into the 2010 season, what are your expectations and hopes for the Williamstown Football Club? I think it is important not to burden everyone with expectations and false hopes. My first aim is to set a culture and commitment by the players that will hopefully lead to sustainable consistent performance. The team has been around the mark over the past 3 or 4 seasons but I m looking to find players who love the challenge of big games when we find those players then exciting times will return. Vale Kelly Brent The Williamstown Football Club was deeply saddened with the passing of our esteemed life member and long time trainer Kelly Brent. Kelly s funeral was held on Friday 26th February and was a great tribute to a special man in the history of the Williamstown Football Club. A magnificent turn up of former players, officials and supporters saw Kel sent off in grand style. Pall Bearers included former coaches Max Papley, Terry Wheeler, Barry Round and former players in Ian Rickman and Jeff Ind. Club stalwart and long time friend Max Everitt was also a pall bearer. Obituaries were delivered by club games record holder Troy West who spoke on behalf of all past players and current Board Member Bernadette O Sullivan who took over from Kel as Head Trainer when he retired. Both Troy s and Bernadette s moving tributes can be read on the Club s website Life Members Day 2010 Our Life Members Day will be held on Saturday 1st May when all Life Members and their guests are invited to attend this luncheon when we play Port Melbourne. VFL Grand Final This year s VFL Grand Final will still be played at Etihad Stadium but it has been brought forward a week and will be played on the Sunday afternoon after the AFL Preliminary Finals and a week before the AFL Grand Final. AFL Victoria believed that the experiment of playing on a Friday night before the AFL Grand Final had not been supported enough and as such will revert to the previous weekend. 23rd Player Rules AFL Victoria have ruled that a 23rd player can be played in all 18 home and away senior games in On 8 occasions we can select a player from our aligned TAC Cup Club Western Jets and on the other 10 games we can select a 1st year TAC Cup graduate who is in his first year at Williamstown in our Senior Side. Cheers Judi Jeremiah Get Well Tony Boyd Everybody at the Williamstown Football Club extends our best wishes to Tony Boyd from A & B Interiors who has been a long time sponsor of the Football Club and his son Murray played at Williamstown for 4 seasons. Western Jets Wrap Sudanese born Majak Daw has been the latest Western Jets player to enter the AFL system, after being picked up by North Melbourne with pick number 9 in the 2009 rookie draft. Born in Sudan, Majak and his family (8 brothers and sisters) sought refugee status in 2000 living in Eygpt for 3 years. They then sought to migrate to Australia in Majak played his first game of Australian Football in 2005 for Taylors Lakes FC U14. The family moved to Werribee in 2006 with Majak participating for the first time at the Western Jets in the Ted Whitten U16 legends program. It s a terrific achievement for Majak and we all wish him the best as he seeks a place on the main list at North Melbourne and hopefully an AFL debut. In other Jets news the pavilion at Crofts Reserve is close to completion. The new centre of excellence is now only weeks away from being a fully functional facility and the Western Jets would again like to thank the contribution from the Williamstown Football Club.
