5 EDITORIAL Peter Jackson VFL talent on show SEASON 2013 is only in its infancy, but already it s reinforced the relevance of the Victorian talented player pathway. Already, we have witnessed four of the nine VFL players selected at the various drafts last year make their AFL debuts. More significantly, they have made an impression at the game s elite level. Sam Dwyer, a 100 game and premiership player with Port Melbourne, and Brett Goodes, also a 100 game player and North Ballarat premiership player, have underscored the relevance of the VFL in providing mature age players an opportunity to progress and succeed. Dwyer and Goodes, both VFL State representatives, have been long-standing top-tier VFL player just looking for an AFL club to give them a chance. And, it s also worth noting that two former VFL players, Port Melbourne s Callum Sinclair and Williamstown s Dane Rampe, have also played their first AFL games this season. Interestingly, a total of 30 ex-vfl players, spread over 15 AFL clubs, played in the AFL Round 2 matches. Included in the number is Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell, Hawthorn premiership captain Sam Mitchell and Sydney premiership ruckman Shane Mumford. Maxwell is not the only current AFL captain whose football roots trace back to the VFL. Western Bulldogs skipper Matthew Boyd is a former Frankston player. It s an ever increasing number, which highlights that VFL players, thanks to the unique mix of AFL and VFL players playing together in the one competition, can make a seamless transition to the game s highest level. More and more AFL clubs are viewing the VFL as a fertile recruiting ground with players ready to take an immediate step up in their careers. Over the past four seasons there has been 46 players either selected at the AFL National, pre-season or Rookie Drafts, but more impressively 32 of those players have played at least one AFL game. Before the current season is over that telling percentage is likely to increase further, with the other five players drafted last year all pushing for AFL selection. Not only has the VFL become a productive harvest at Draft time, but AFL clubs don t have an issue with star players using the competition as part of their comeback process. Already this season we have seen Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge, Collingwood premiership players Dale Thomas and Alan Didak as well as Geelong triple premiership player Joel Corey all playing in the VFL. Quite apart from producing an ever-increasing number of AFL players, the standard of the VFL continues to soar as AFL clubs have become more and more comfortable that the VFL offers a beneficial outcome for everyone even its stars. It highlights the pivotal role the VFL plays in the talented player pathway. 7 BEN DUSCHER Duscher leads Bombers new start BEN Duscher talks excitedly about the opportunity to play for a new club, albeit one whose origins date back to the 19th century. Not only will he play for the new side, but he will also cocaptain the Bombers with former Demon Matthew Bate. For the past 10 years, Essendon has been aligned with Bendigo, but this season reverts to a stand-alone club just like it was back when the VFL was revamped at the turn of this century. While many of the AFL Listed and VFL listed players have a connection from the Bendigo Bombers/Gold, Duscher described the environment of the new club as amazing. Now that we have everyone under the one umbrella, we train together and there is no travel issue - it is just one group it makes everything so much easier, Duscher said. After co-captaining Bendigo Gold for the past two seasons, Duscher said living and working nearby Windy Hill made it a logistically easy decision to join the new entity. It just made sense and Essendon is a great club and I wanted to stay part of it, particularly because of the boys that are involved. It has a great culture and I wanted to be part of that environment, he said. It s definitely exciting times to be involved in something new going forward. You get the chance to write a piece of the new club s history. While there are no givens in football, Duscher said Essendon had the mix of experience and talented youth to make an impact right from the get-go. I think we are going to be a competitive and exciting team to watch, he promised. Former Frosty Miller medalist Matthew Little, who now heads up Essendon s VFL Football Operations, said recruiting experienced players like Duscher, ex-demon Bate and Gold Coast Suns Josh Toy, former Geelong VFL captain Matthew Firman and Bendigo Gold co-captain Trent Shinners was imperative for the club to make an immediate statement. Little, who kicked 370 goals during his time at Box Hill Hawks, Williamstown and Bendigo Gold, said retaining some players from the Bendigo alignment was one of the first steps. Apart from last season s Bendigo co-captains Duscher and Shinners, Josh Freezer comes on board as does Michael Sikora, an emerging ruckman who played with Sandringham last season. While Little will not play, he said the depth of the list, both AFL and VFL, set a foundation for the club to build. It gives you the depth you need in your VFL list and experience and leadership that is going to help the young Essendon players improve, Little said. If you look at Geelong s model the past five or six years, their VFL list is pretty experienced and they ve always been very competitive. And, that s something that we want. You want to develop the young Essendon guys, but in the frame work of a winning culture. Hopefully, with the experience and quality of players we ve been able to get it will hold us in good stead to be competitive. 9 Webster new Blues coach WHEN the coaching position at Northern Blues became available Luke Webster didn t hesitate to put up his hand. Webster, whose AFL career was effectively ended by a succession of knee reconstructions, knew what the VFL Blues program entailed through his role as Carlton development coach. During his time with Carlton he had worked with all the young Carlton players who spent time with the Northern Blues and last year he served as the defensive coach. It allowed him to also get a feel for the Northern Blues VFL players and how everything worked at VFL level. After I finished playing, I sat with a few different people and worked out a pathway of stuff that I wanted to do and one of them was look at the coaching side of things, Webster said. I was fortunate enough to get a job with Carlton as a development coach and when Darren (Harris, who coached the Northern Blues when Robert Hyde exited midway through last season) left, I thought why not put my hand up. I m only 30. I saw it as a great chance to coach my own team and mirror the game plan that Mick (Malthouse) has with Carlton and see if I like it and want to take it further or find out that coaching is not for me. While Northern Blues didn t stock up its VFL list with ex-afl players or VFL players, Webster is more than comfortable with the depth of the club s VFL list. Webster said all the leadership group is basically young players who have plenty to offer after a couple of seasons in the VFL. He noted that co-captains Andre Gianfagna and Brent Bransgrove as well as Adam Marcon, Kane Lambert, Nick Meese, Tyson Thomas and Paul Dirago provided a strong core group of VFL players. LUKE WEBSTER They are pretty much our leadership group and they drive it and make sure the bond between the VFL and AFL players is really strong. I think that s why our alignment is one of the best going around, Webster said. What also gives Webster confidence that Northern Blues can rise up the ladder is the way the club finished off last season. After a horrendous start to the season where they won just one match through the first 14 rounds (three byes included), Northern Blues ended the season winning five of its last seven games. And, included in those wins were the scalps of Werribee and ladder-leader Casey Scorpions. Last year was always going to be a bit of a difficult year given we lost Adam Iacobucci, Jarrod McCorkell and Ahmed Saad was drafted and Ryan Gale went to Port Melbourne, Webster said. It meant that a lot of younger players had to step into senior roles and by the end of the season they became used to it. The way we finished off definitely excited me going forward with this group of players. I think this group can really play some good and consistent football. 5

10 WILLIAMSTOWN Williamstown moving forward WILLIAMSTOWN enters this season with an eye on the present as well as one on the future. The Seagulls have already made it known that this will be its last year in alignment with the Western Bulldogs and from next season it will field a stand-alone VFL team. As part of that transition, Williamstown has implemented a series of measures that it hopes will assist in making as seamless as possible such a move. Club general manager Brendan Curry said the club made no apology in shaping its future during this season. Curry said it s crucial that its VFL players know where they stand each and every week and such certainty would therefore augur well for next season. As part of regaining its autonomy, Williamstown has established some selection criteria for this season. Williamstown Football Club has total say over selection, Curry said. Obviously, we still take on board the requests of the Western Bulldogs coaching staff. We know we still have to develop their young players. But, at the end of the day our prime role is to pick a winning, balance side on a weekly basis. When it comes to numbers, if the Bulldogs say there is 16 or more (Bulldogs) players available to be selected our match committee can choose up to 12 players if we see they re in our best 23 players. If there is 15 or less available we will pick 11. Before the Geelong match there was 17 Bulldogs available, we selected 12 and left out five. Curry said such a selection policy would help with the transition to a stand-alone club as well as encouraging retention and recruiting of players, just as it has this season. He said several of this season s recruits had been signed to a two-year deal as the club went about identifying the areas it needed to address. Essendon s Brent Prismall and Western Bulldog Justin Sherman as well Coburg best and fairest winner Willie Wheeler and teammate Leigh Masters came aboard. We were exposed for a ruckman last year so were went out and picked up Cam Wood and Brandon Symes and Leigh Williams as a key forward, Curry said. The players know that next year we will be stand-alone and there will be 23 spots available each week instead of 11 and 12. Curry said the club will not be looking for a full-time coach in 2014 given its football infrastructure of himself and football manager Chris Dixon, who look after recruiting, list management and staff. 11 WERRIBEE TIGERS Werribee setting the pace MUCH has been made about the extensive and seemingly successful recruiting drive during the off-season by Werribee. While it saw the VFL Tigers net Jarred Moore and Brett Meredith from Sydney Swans, Addam Maric from Richmond, retain North Melbourne pair Ben Warren and Ben McKinley and snare Collingwood VFL captain Kris Pendlebury, Werribee coach Scott West said it wasn t about selling the club. West said he did not need to sell Werribee to any of the recruits, particularly Warren and McKinley as they knew the environment at Avalon Airport Oval. He said he encouraged all the players the club spoke to make the right decision. I think Brett went and trained at Box Hill. As much as you want these guys to play for you, you want them to make the right decision, West said. I don t believe in selling football clubs. I just believe in telling them the facts of what we are about and what we provide and the culture we re trying to set. If a player wants to be involved in that he will and we were lucky enough to jag a few. Many delisted AFL players want to break ties with the aligned club just so they can have what they term a fresh start. West understands that. He says it is an individual decision and he respects the player s choice. He noted with Warren and McKinley what was in Werribee s favour is that both had played a lot of football at the club and obviously had enjoyed their time. The decision they had to make was whether staying in the environment they knew was beneficial to their football or going to a different football environment was going to be more beneficial. Ben Ross was in a similar position to Warren and McKinley. He chose to stay with Werribee after North Melbourne de-listed him and he responded with a season Scott West addresses his side against Port Melbourne that saw him win the JJ Liston Trophy. West said the credit must go to the Werribee Football Club for providing such an environment where all players, particularly the North Melbourne players feel part of the club and culture. He recalled telling both Warren and McKinley they had to go away and think about their football in an unemotional state. I said to them go away, think about it and make the right decision for you. I said it would be terrific if we get to keep you, but if not we will wish you all the best, West said. We re grateful they stayed and I think we saw in the first round they have the right attitude. West noted he could understand the disappointment that is associated with players who are delisted. He said there was a time to be disappointed and then there was a time to move on from it. If you don t put it behind you, you can t move on from it. Players who really harp on disappointment, drag it with them, West said. And, in the end it drags them down and really affects them not only as footballers, but as individuals. The players, who are able to push it to one side, move ahead of it, move on pretty quick and have success. Ample evidence of that at Avalon Airport Oval. 7

13 MARCUS MARIGLIANI Marigliani to lead Zebras WHILE injury followed by a debilitating illness has limited him to just 18 games in two seasons, Marcus Marigliani s impact at Sandringham can be measured in many other ways. Certainly, Marigliani s passion, commitment, discipline and dedication left an indelible imprint on his teammates, who during the off-season voted him as captain for the 2013 season. It s the first time Marigliani has captained a club since he was a teenager playing for Seaford Tigers, but the former Frankston best and fairest winner displays all the attributes of an outstanding leader. For Marigliani, who spent time with Essendon after the Bombers selected him in the 2009 Rookie draft, the club captaincy is something he takes with humility and honor. Personally, to be the captain of such a proud club with such a rich history is truly an honor, Marigliani said. To look back at some of the greats that have played and captained the Sandringham Football Club is very overwhelming, and to think my name will go down along-side theirs is a very humbling feeling and I feel very privileged. To be voted in by your peers and coaching staff is for me personally a very satisfying feeling, it just reiterates the beliefs and values you bring as a player to your playing group and your football club. It gives me great confidence in leading the way as a captain. Commitment is something that Marigliani firmly believes in and he s made that a focus of the Sandringham players since pre-season training started last November. He understands the demands on players who have a career away from football, but there is a compulsory training structure in place. Really investing our time together and locking in to get the best out of ourselves and for the playing group, he said. Asked what Sandringham fans expect from him as captain, Marigliani says he has strong values on and off the field Whether I m captain, in the leadership group or just a player I will always go after those values and beliefs. I will be doing my job as captain to the best of my ability. While Sandringham broke back into the finals last year after a four year absence, few have included the Zebras in the final eight discussions this season. Marigliani believes such crystal ball gazing has overlooked the fact that Sandringham retained the majority of its senior players from last season. It is only early in the year, but I am genuinely excited about the year ahead for the players and the Sandringham Football Club, he said. And, the best news of all is that Marigliani revealed his body is in the best shape it s been since he broke through to play AFL in the 2010 season. I m very fortunate enough to have worked very closely with Glenn Thomson our strength and conditioning coach, he said. 15 RUSS GABRIEL Gabriel returns to Frankston FOR all the recruits Simon Goosey welcomed to Frankston there was one that put a big smile on his face. Goosey is delighted with how Frankston has built on its list, but the addition of big Russ Gabriel is particularly significant. Gabriel, a member of the VFL Team of the Year in 2010 and 2011, will fill a gaping hole in the Dolphins ruck brigade. Goosey doesn t mask the fact that Frankston s lack of ruckmen was exposed last year when Gabriel spent the season with East Fremantle. What Goosey particularly likes about Gabriel is that he wears his heart on his sleeve and gives everything he possibly can whenever he pulls on a Frankston jumper. The one thing we lacked last year was there was no presence in the ruck, Goosey said. Big Russ has that presence and experience. There were a few close games that we lost where we needed someone to stand up with a bit of presence about them. He will certainly be able to do that for us. He s such a competitor and that s why I don t think he really liked the WAFL. He told me you would shake hands with your opponent and that would be the last time you saw him all day. He thrives on throwing himself into the contest. Gabriel is also to be what he termed happy to be back home with all my mates. He noted the difference between the VFL and WAFL is like rugby league and rugby union two completely different styles. Gabriel said the WAFL is faster, free-flowing game with a greater emphasis on foot skills while the VFL is a more contested, harder-fought, tougher contest. It took me a fair while to get used to and with my build, I think I m better suited to the VFL, Gabriel said. It was a completely different learning experience. It had some good points, but in the end I was happy to come home. Gabriel said one of the first things he noticed on his return to the Peninsula club was the buzz of excitement around the place. He said the level of talent had risen in just the one season and it augured well for the Dolphins making a genuine bid to play finals. With the list we ve got we think we can push for the finals, Gabriel said. And, we like to challenge ourselves against the AFL players each week. I think we ve shown with the number of players we ve had drafted from Frankston that we can mix it with them. 16 WILLIE WHEELER Wheeler impresses Seagulls FOR someone who queried whether he would gain a game at his new club, Willie Wheeler created a favourable impression straight from the get-go. While Williamstown lost its season opener against Geelong at Torquay, Wheeler was a standout for the Seagulls. It didn t come as a shock to those who have followed Wheeler s career at Coburg the past two seasons since he graduated from TAC Cup club Murray Bushrangers. Coburg struggled during that time, but Wheeler was a shining light as evidenced by his win in the club best and fairest last year. But, Wheeler wanted to pursue his football elsewhere in season 2013 and Williamstown s erstwhile general manager Brendan Curry wasted no time recruiting him to Point Gellibrand. Wheeler was pleased he played well in his first game for Williamstown, but noted it mattered little given the club lost. I went over with Pottsie (Adam Potter, who coached Wheeler at Coburg Tigers the past two years) and Leigh Masters, who is a good friend, Wheeler said. Wheeler in Round 1 versus Geelong. Photo: Arj Giese FAST FACTS WILLIE WHEELER AGE: 20 CLUBS: Coburg Tigers, Williamstown GAMES: 34 GOALS: 17 HIGHLIGHTS: Coburg Tigers best & fairest 2012, VFL Academy member 2012 I was tossing up whether to stay or leave, but after speaking with Williamstown I was impressed with their professionalism and thought it would be the best thing. I signed about three or four weeks before pre-season. I had a few calls from a few other clubs, but I wanted to sign with a club and get it out of the way before preseason started. I didn t want to be messing around with stuff like that while I was training. I don t regret playing at Coburg Tigers, but now I m excited to be at Williamstown with all its history and culture and professionalism. Wheeler said he d heard much about Peter German and his ability to maximize a player s ability so he was keen to play under him. But, at the same time Wheeler was unsure if he d break into the team. My goal at the start was just to get a game. The amount of good recruits they had, I thought it might be tough to crack into the side, Wheeler said. There are a lot of areas of my game that I have to work on, particularly my defensive side of my game. I ll keep working on that throughout the season. Wheeler has been undertaking extra sessions with Williamstown fitness coach Matthew Innes, something which he believes has taken his fitness to a new level. He said the leg weight work has proved particularly beneficial. And, Wheeler is also adjusting to the vagaries of the wind whipping off the bay and the accompanying headaches that can cause opposition clubs. Wheeler admits that was a negative about joining the Seagulls, but as the season progresses he s becoming accustomed to what the weather gods deliver. Above all, the 20-year-old is looking to solidify his position in the team and hopefully with that comes the opportunity to play finals, something that he did not experience at Coburg. 12

17 STEPHEN CLIFTON Welcome home for Clifton FOR Stephen Clifton his time in the AFL, albeit not as long as he would have liked, is a bit like the advertisement for a particular credit card priceless. Yes, Clifton only managed fi ve games for Greater Western Sydney, but it was something he will long cherish and something his old and new club North Ballarat will be the beneficiary for many years. Clifton candidly noted that he had never ever been to Sydney let alone lived in the Harbor City before GWS drafted him after his JJ Liston Trophy performance in the last year of the Rooster s threepeat. Literally, Clifton s life change in a space of a week. It was a great experience, I met a lot of awesome people and did a lot of things I thought I would never do, Clifton said. I learned a lot of things under Sheeds (Kevin Sheedy) and Mark Williams. All the players learned so much from them. I come back to North Ballarat hoping I m a better player and hopefully I can take a few things that I learned into the team. for the future. It (his departure) never came as a complete shock, but it is still never good news, he said. While Clifton brings with him two years in the AFL system coupled with his previous outstanding career, the 25-yearold doesn t expect or want to have the team s expectations hoisted on his shoulders. Clifton said the success of North Ballarat would not revolve around him or for that matter any other individual. He noted the key to the Roosters glory days was a contribution from everyone on the list. When the bell rang, everyone was prepared to do their bit. While much has changed in Stephen Clifton s life, others haven t. One aspect that stuck with Clifton is the preparation, especially knowing opposition players, which accompanied each game. Hours upon hours of video footage of opponents would be served up to the players. Knowing how to nullify their strengths and expose their weaknesses was one of the major areas that I learned, Clifton said. Also, little things like body positioning at stoppages, hands on the ball when you are kicking it. Little parts of the game that went unnoticed early in my career were brought to my attention. When he knew that his AFL career with the Giants would not extend to 2013, it was for Clifton a no-brainer that he would return to the club where he has been a bona fide star for as long as he s played with North Ballarat. As unpalatable as it undoubtedly was, Clifton could see the direction for the Giants is to get as much game time as possible into its army of talented youngsters as they build FAST FACTS STEPHEN CLIFTON AGE: 25 CLUB: North Ballarat GAMES: GOALS: HIGHLIGHTS: JJ Liston Trophy 2010; premiership player ; best & fairest 2010; VFL Team Of The Year

20 REVIEW COLLINGWOOD VS WILLIAMSTOWN Magpies defeat inaccurate Roosters A star-studded Collingwood line-up has kicked off the season in style, with a 52-point victory over an inaccurate North Ballarat at Victoria Park last Saturday as Catherine Durkin reports. The Magpies strengthened by the inclusion of many notable players, including Dale Thomas, Alan Didak and Andrew Krakouer commanded much of the play. But several fade-outs during the second and final quarters could have proved costly, had the Roosters converted their opportunities. The game also saw the return of Alex Fasolo and Clinton Young from injury. While Fasolo managed to run out the game well, Young will return to the sidelines due to a hamstring injury sustained in the first quarter. Mature-aged recruits Kyle Martin and Josh Thomas shone for Collingwood, notching up 33 disposals and 26 disposals respectively. Jack Frost was also comprehensive across the backline, continuing the form that saw him selected for Collingwoo s round one AFL side. First-year Collingwood coach, Dale Tapping praised his team s efforts, but was quick to dispel any suggestion that the higherprofile players carried the team. Obviously we had a good team in terms of names, but as we discussed during the course of the week that s only part of it. It s nice to have quality players at your disposal but fundamentally you ve got to get it done and you ve still got to be fundamentally correct, he said. Positives for North Ballarat included their ability to win the ball and create scoring opportunities. This was heartening considering the late withdrawal of ruckman Ben Mabon, meaning their structure needed to adapt to a loss of height. Aaron Black, Cam Richardson and Matt Austin were among the Roosters best. Nick Rippon was also promising, proving himself worthy of his recent elevation from the North Ballarat Rebels in the TAC Cup to the Roosters senior list. But Roosters coach Gerald FitzGerald reiterated that it was his teams inability to make the most of their opportunities that cost them. For us to be a top side, we ve got to be more efficient, he said. We just weren t able to exert any scoreboard pressure. We had shots at goal from good spots, but we didn t kick them and therefore we couldn t convert the things we did right into scoreboard efficiency. Horror season-openers have plagued North Ballarat for several years now. They will seek to overturn this when they take on the Casey Scorpions at Eureka Stadium this Saturday. As for Collingwood, they face the Werribee Tigers under lights Saturday night, after they were defeated by the Northern Blues last Saturday night. 16

21 Northern lights up season REVIEW NORTHERN BLUES VS WERRIBEE TIGERS The Northern Blues have kick-started their season in grand style defeating early season flag favourites Werribee by 15 points under lights at Avalon Airport Oval as Damian Tardio reports. A hungry Blues outfit showed their intent early; dominating the first quarter and strangling the Tigers run and carry out of half back. With a host of dangerous, crumbing forwards, the Northern Blues caused major headaches for the home side as Tim Totevski, Dylan Buckley and Tyson Thomas proved hard match ups for their Werribee counterparts and were complemented well by the tall timber of Luke Visser and Robbie Warnock. Late first term goals from Werribee via Scott Clouston and Ben Warren closed the gap to five points at the first break. With Heath Scotland, Ed Curnow and Adam Marcon all dominating in the midfield, the Blues were able to kickaway early in the second term, opening a 22-point buffer until Werribee led by Mason Wood and Addam Maric kept the Tigers in touch at the main break as the game became a shoot-out. Tyson Thomas got the Blues off to a dream start in the third term, hitting the scoreboard 25 seconds in and when he drilled his fourth goal not long after the Blues were out to a comfortable 29-point lead. The best was yet to come, with Thomas conjuring a magic goal, keeping the ball alive and then snapping around the body for a fifth goal to keep Werribee at bay. Refusing to fold, Clouston came into the game up forward snapping two consecutive goals for the Tigers, but the home side still trailed by 26 at the final change. played himself into form with 23 disposals, whilst the work of first-gamers Tom Temay and Troy Menzel was encouraging. Rookie coach, Luke Webster was elated to register a win in his first competitive game in charge. The boys applied themselves really well, I m really happy with their efforts, and we knew we were up against a quality team and they kept coming at us, but to be able to hang on and win is fantastic. Coming off an 11-goal haul against Port Melbourne last week, Tiger Ben Warren was kept to two goals thanks to the great work of the Blues backline. Matthew Watson and Simon White along with the rest of our backline were terrific tonight, they were up against it, but they stood up and held it together, Webster said. With the disappointment of season 2012 well and truly in the past, Webster says his chargers have grown in confidence over the summer. The guys last year probably lacked confidence in finishing off games, it was early and they were a young team, but this year they are another year older and were are really hungry for success. The resolve of the Blues was tested in the final term, as the Tigers upped the ante, turning the tables in the midfield battle allowing William Martiniello and Majak Daw to score in succession and spark the home crowd into voice. Overrun a number of times from a winning position in 2012, the Northern Blues were able to steady off the boot of a Marcon dribble and then when Warnock kicked truly the game was put out of the Tigers reach. Ed Curnow with 30 disposals was consistent through the entire game, suspended Carlton player Heath Scotland Photo: Arj Giese 17

32 AFL VICTORIA DEVELOPMENT WorkSafe Games of the Month Next weekend marks the first WorkSafe Game of the Month for season To kick off the 10th year that these wonderful events have been held, Essendon legend Terry Daniher will travel up the Calder Freeway for the big Bendigo league clash between South Bendigo and Sandhurst. Daniher and Hawthorn champion Peter Knights will alternate as the guest speakers this season as the tradition of the WorkSafe Game of the Month continues at seven new destinations. Both are legends of the game and fascinating to listen to as they reminisce about their glory days and give their opinions on current football issues. Daniher played 313 games of VFL / AFL football in a decorated career spanning 16 seasons. The oldest of four brothers to play for the Bombers, Daniher lead the club to two premiership in a 5-year stint as captain and was named in the club s Team of the Century. Knights is also a Team of the Century member at Hawthorn, winning the club s Best & Fairest in 1975 and He played 264 matches in a golden era that yielded premierships in 1976, 1978 and The WorkSafe Game of the Month was first introduced in 2003 and in a highly successful 10-year period they have visited more than 60 football communities around Victoria and southern NSW, promoting the importance of workplace safety to all communities. The events facilitated by AFL Victoria Country allow WorkSafe to develop better relationships with local businesses and people, which provides an avenue to further communicate their important message to a specific audience. The games also help increase the exposure of country football throughout rural and regional Victoria, and highlight the quality and excitement that country football provides. The WorkSafe Game of the Month will visit every corner of the state this season with matches scheduled in Bendigo, Geelong, Jeparit, Alvie, Neerim Neerim South, Picola and Benalla. The events will again include the opportunity for country supporters to receive a free comprehensive health check courtesy of WorkHealth at the match. All supporters are encouraged to attend a game and come see the nurses at the WorkHealth marquee and book in for a health check. In just 15 minutes you will receive a personal scorecard on your health which could be the most important 15 minutes you spend this year.
