1 TIGER NEWS JUNE 2011 t h e i n s i d e w o r d w i t h M a j a k D a w Racism is not okay You ve not doubt seen, heard or read that I was racially abused by a Port Melbourne footy fan on Saturday while playing for Werribee in the VFL. Instead of sitting in the background, I decided to make a stand. I had a short but direct message to send to the community that racism is not okay whether it s directed at footballers or anybody else. Over the last few days I have spoken to Channel 9, Channel 7, Channel 10, Dennis Cometti, Tim Watson and even 3AW s Neil Mitchell about the issue. They have all been very understanding and supportive of me. So too have my family, members of the North Melbourne Football Club, Werribee, Port Melbourne, the AFL, AFL Victoria and the VFL. I have also had thousands of messages of support from the community via letters and Twitter The one question I have been asked the most is how did it make you feel to be abused like that?. It s a difficult question to answer but the best way to describe it is to say that I felt isolated. It was the first I had been confronted with that sort of behaviour and it really shocked me. It happened in the first quarter and I lost the desire to play. I just wanted to head into the change rooms and finish up for the day and head home. It was a horrible feeling. Since coming to Australia with my family eight years ago, we have been welcomed with open arms and I proudly call this country my home. We have settled in Wyndham Vale and have made so many friends. I know it is only a minority who think racism is okay but we as a community have to get the message out there that it is unacceptable. I hope by speaking out that I may stop other behaving in this way and maybe save another immigrant from being treated like this and being made to feel unwelcome or isolated. The Werribee Football Club wants to reaffirm its stance in light of recent events. The Werribee Football Club is mindful of its leading role in the community, especially in areas like racial vilification. The club is committed to educating its staff, coaches, players and supporters to conduct themselves in the appropriate manner at all times. The club will not tolerate behaviour like that at Port Melbourne at the weekend and will deal with any individual who breaches our standards. The club would like to thank the Port Melbourne Football Club and its officials for the manner in which they dealt with the incident and individual on the weekend. The Werribee Football Club will ensure that visitors to Avalon Airport Oval are entering a user friendly environment with zero tolerance for anti-social behaviour.

2 Vale Ray Smith Werribee Football Club mourned the passing of club legend John Raymond Ray Smith on Wednesday, with a Requiem Mass held at St Andrews Church. Ray was 90 when he passed away peacefully in his sleep, at home, on the 31 st of May. Loving husband of Lil (dec.), he is survived by his children Beverly, Barry and Darryl. Ray had been involved with the football club since its inception, serving as the initial Secretary from 1965 until Following that he served as Team Manager and Staff Officer, among other roles. Also a life member of the VFA/VFL and a member of the Werribee RSL, Ray s passion for the Werribee Football Club was unsurpassed. He attended his 44 th Annual General Meeting in The President, Board, staff, coaches, players and supporters of the Werribee Football Club extend their sincere condolences to Ray s family and friends during this difficult time.

3 The Community Report Wyndhamvale Falcons Football Club Collect $23,000 The Tigers Clubhouse in conjunction with the Werribee Football Club was delighted to award The Wyndhamvale Falcons Football Club with $23,000 of the $50,000 offered to Sporting Clubs in Wyndham for their participation in the 2010 Tigers Sports Assist program. Tigers Sports Assist commenced in 2010 and is a Tigers Clubhouse member loyalty program which specifically benefits sporting groups in the Wyndham community. In 2011 the Tigers Clubhouse will again distribute $50,000 between the clubs involved in the program, so there is no better time to get your club and its supporters on board in To get involved all you need to do is register your club by June 30th and then ask your members to join the Tigers Clubhouse or for existing members to nominate which club their points are awarded to. 4 Werribee Tigers Women s Football Circle Leaving OUR mark The women of Werribee are gathering together to form the WOMEN S FOOTBALL CIRCLE the new Women s Coterie of the Werribee Football Club. The WOMEN S FOOTBALL CIRCLE has been established to increase female representation and support within the Werribee Football Club. Throughout the year the Women s Football Circle will host a series of social events & functions that will raise funds to finance the improvement of Club facilities. The aim to create a function room environment that is socially enticing and introducing improved facilities that are more appropriate and appealing. On Saturday the 2 nd July against the Casey Scorpions the club will launch the Women s Football Circle with a traditional High Tea with the support or CS Consulting Group & Fifth Element Day Spa. It will be the perfect excuse to catch up with the girls, while the boys catch up with the footy. Our function room will be transformed for this ladies only event and will include a decadent High Tea, pampering stations, raffles and a gorgeous gift bag on the day.
