Under 7 Gold For what would be our first game played on our home deck, Mother Nature must ve nestled in on the side lines to watch the boys of Golden Grove as she sure turned on the fine weather for us. It was a cracking morning, perfect for playing skilful team football and that we did. Before the game we spoke about things to concentrate on: Standing the Mark, Make sure your handballs hit the targets and start each quarter well. The first quarter started BOOM!!! We were on the board immediately with a great clearance from Adam Barnett and a nice sausage roll to Bailey Casey. The first quarter would see the ball only venture into our backlines a few times but we were strong in defence with Riley Baker and Hamish Martin creating great rebound back to the centre where Riley Rosebburg was lurking for couple vital touches. We d kick a few more goals this quarter with Bailey Casey finishing with 2 and Jayden Jackman chiming in with his own classy effort resulting in a great set shot from the pocket. At the first break we congratulated ourselves on a terrific start but the job wasn t over. If we were going to have control over the ball, let s try and get everyone in on the action. Team work boys, Team work!! The second quarter started BOOM again!! Jordan Ruchs popped up with big kick from way out and got us started. Our skills would be on show for all to see in the second quarter with our running handball and foot passes to each other; absolutely superb boys!! There was some great stuff from Jayden Djorem this quarter; going into packs and extracting the ball only to pass off to team mates. Also an outstanding quarter from Oliver Ward by far his toughest and a fantastic improvement showing he s a natural in and under player. Miller Jolly came to the game with strategy in mind as he took it upon himself to be a sweeper and took the loose ball for his own. Brodie Murphy had a cracking shot at goal and Harry Hensby had some great efforts locking the ball in our forward line this quarter. We d finish the quarter with another 3 goals with Jodan Ruch 2 and Little Zac Big Heart with one of is standard inspirational efforts resulting in a goal. At the half time break as the boys devoured the oranges; Team work is what we spoke about. We were doing everything we had been training for all week. Hitting our handball targets and standing the mark now to get everyone a touch. As the third quarter started our boys seemed totally switched on and hungry for the ball. With a great break away from the centre by Jordan and a beautiful pass to Alby Bradshaw who had a huge shot at goal that only just missed Angle Vale were going to be in trouble this quarter. Lachlan Anderson was an enforcer this quarter by putting solid pressure on their back line ensuring the ball didn t get out easily. Alby had a few more shots at goal before unleashing a Stevie J like goal with a snap over his shoulder and straight through the big sticks. Again when the ball ventured into our backline this quarter it was stopped by Bailey (who the Angle Vale coach gave a nick name too: The Wall) Harry Slater had some great touches this quarter with some beautiful passes into the forward lines. Riley Baker showed some class with his evasion skills and getting the ball to Sam Carter who dodged and weaved his way to the goals only to just miss with a snap shot at goal. We had plenty of shots at goal this quarter but we only finished the quarter with the 1 goal to Alby, At the final break there was nothing to be said to the boys except: keep going you re doing awesome!!! The last quarter started like a training drill. Lachlan wins the tap to Riley B who handballs to Alby has a bounce and great pass to Adam Barnett who turns and burns with a bounce and speeding shot on the right foot goal!!!! It was much the same for the rest of the quarter with some special moments all around the ground. Ajay Visnyai s running snap was a beauty and he had an outstanding game; the way he played with such control, he seemed to grow a foot today. Kyan Smith had plenty of the ball this quarter but was so unlucky, he was in all the right spots but the ball kept bouncing the wrong way for him the same goes with his shot at goal!!! Caleb Zanker waited for the last part of the day to have his moment, taking a ball from a pack, running in and kicking a goal sneaky, sneaky!! We finished the last quarter with 2 goals to Adam and 1 to both Ajay and Caleb. In summary, the boys were outstanding they had a day out!!. Their unselfish play is something to behold and it shows they are listening to instruction at training and in the games. But there was one major fault with the game WE FORGOT TO SING OUR CLUB SONG!! Guess what we ll be starting training with on Thursday night.awesome, awesome effort boys!! Who is Golden Grove Under 7 Gold? WE ARE!!!!! Go Kookaburras!!

Under 8 Green Under 8 Green took on a very skilled Payneham Black side at Home this week on a sunny Sunday morning. Payneham came to play and it was great for our boys to have a competitive hit out for the first time this season. We started off slow and inaccurate kicking let us down a bit too - but we toughed it out, got back to basics and ended up coming from behind to be three point winners so well done boys! You could tell from the outset that Payneham had some big and skilful bodies who were just as hungry for the ball as us. Indy played a stellar game in the centre in the first quarter, getting lots of marks and peppering the ball down to our forwards as often as he could. Louis ran onto one of the balls and kicked a goal to get us off the mark, while Zach also managed a point shortly after. Kam got his hands on the ball a lot but just needed a little extra grunt to get in the right position to reward all his hard work, finishing with 1.1 for the quarter. Ryan was handy through the middle and Louis added another point late in the quarter, while Payneham were able to move the ball quickly and add to their score. Angus took a great intercept in the forward lines in the second quarter and finished off with a point. Then Jordan used his speed to grab a loose ball and slot a goal. Alex later took a clean pick-up, ran in from an angle but unfortunately the kick for goal fell short only for Jordan to sweep it up and snap it around his body for his second goal of the day. Blake continued to present in the forward lines and take a couple marks, and Harley and Liam showed their toughness in the centre by fighting hard the ball all while Payneham kept challenging us by kicking three majors this quarter. Jordan collected a lot of touches in the centre in the third, constantly sending it down to our strong marking forwards in Indy and Logan who took some stellar grabs. As a result, Logan kicked a point and Indy kicked a goal. While Payneham were kicking extremely accurately, we managed to miss a few this quarter which shows we ve got to play a bit smarter and square up to the goals whenever we can. Noah also fought hard to earn himself a few touches and Owen took a couple runs in the centre. Finally in the last quarter we found our feet and played a bit more of the aggressive footy we know our boys are capable of. Mackye got us started by running onto a loose ball, and even though he fumbled the kick he worked hard to recover and still slotted the goal. Rhys got an effective clearance and kicked it down to Zach who read the ball brilliantly and kicked a goal. At this stage of the game it was really tight, with Payneham getting a few scores too and trading goals with us. Our centre boys were excellent though, always chasing hard and at one point we had Jace, Ryan and Kam all fighting hard for the ball against one Payneham player. Jace then used his booming kick to send it down to Louis who took a strong mark and kicked it straight through the middle for another goal. Indy later got a strong clearance and kicked a pinpoint pass to Harley on the lead, who converted with an excellent kick for goal. With only seconds left, Payneham took one last attempt to get themselves ahead when Alex stood up strong and took a mark right on the last line of defence, sealing the win for our boys! This was a really tight, hard-fought game which showed we have to bring our A-Game every week! Never forget the three main things we need to nail every week: Be hungry for the ball, Stay on our feet, and Man up in defence and the rest will take care of itself! Scorers: Louis 2.1, Jordan 2.0, Kam 1.2, Zach 1.1, Indy 1.0, Harley 1.0, Mackye 1.0, Angus 0.1 Logan 0.1.

Under 8 Blue Wow, what a turnaround from last week! The boys really excelled, implementing the things we had been working on during training. Ruck work was the skills focus during the week and it was fantastic to see the likes of Thomas, Jordie and Lucas taking charge of the centre zone and organising the boys into the set play positions. This meant that possession of the ball from the ruck contest was more consistently won allowing for it to be transferred into the forward line at great speed. Lucas Rowse was responsible for many of these fast breaks in the first quarter running with the ball after the centre tap and kicking long into the open forward line. Thomas Hobbs capitalised on his two stints in the forward line kicking 2 goals and taking some great marks. Another stand out was Bailey Dand, after some encouragement to back himself in, Bailey gained possession of the ball on a couple of occasions and with the typical Bailey "smile from ear to ear" ran with it and kicked into our forward line. Lee Bryant again showed great attach on the ball and was rewarded on numerous occasions gaining possession from every 50/50 contest he was involved in. Isaac Riddle had another great game taking some crucial marks and kicking a couple of goals during the game but he almost overdid it whilst playing for the opposition, lining up to kick a goal but thankfully tried to pass it off instead of putting it between the white posts. The team had a real lift in the last quarter with some fantastic passages of play with numerous players getting involved and the entire team having a confidence boost ready for our next game. We will continue to work at training building the bond between the boys and will surely continue to improve each week. Under 8 Gold Another beautiful Sunday morning for footy at Harpers Field for Under 8 Gold. This time our opponent was Tea Tree Gully Black, and we knew we had to be on top of our game. The opening quarter was a tight tussle, going goal for goal, as TTG had some quality players. In true Kookaburra spirit, our team kept on attacking the ball, and was lead very well by game day captain Owen Jarrad from the centre. Braden Carpenter had a three-goal quarter, while the back line stood tall, with Josh Caldicott having one of his best games for GGFC. The second quarter was a completely different story - our centre players did a magnificent job, and didn't let the ball enter TTG's third at all. Nathan Petrie was solid in ruck, and kept on making a contest, James Gray and Brooke Silby combined well with Tyson Walters, and Noah French had an outstanding game, chasing everything down. This meant that our forwards had lots of opportunities, and they grabbed them! Jack Goreing had a three-goal quarter, capped off nicely with a lovely intercept mark just in front of goal. Matthew LeRay kicked two long-range goals, and with Josh and Owen both getting goals, meant a 7.1 term was the result. The second half started just as strong with plenty of spirit and skills shown by our team, and great team play to bring everyone into the game. Tyson Karklis had his best game to date, even managing to score his first ever goal as a Kookaburra - well done! Goal Scorers: Braden Carpenter 4.1, Jack Goreing 3.0, Brooke Silby 2.1, Matthew LeRay 2.0, James Gray 1.1, Kodi Landherr 1.1, Thomas Glen 1.0, Josh Caldicott 1.0, Owen Jarrad 1.0, Bailey Maddeford 1.0, Corey Edwards 1.0, Tyson Karklis 1.0, Ryan Kopec 0.1, Noah French 0.1, Nathan Petrie 0.1

Under 10 Blue After a slow start to last week s game in trying conditions, the focus was put on the boys of under 10 blue at training to ensure they were up for a big home match tonight versus Tea Tree Gully. Our previous encounters had been well short of the mark so we warmed up as hard as we could and our pre-match was all focused on commitment and tackling skills the threat was a training of laps if we started slowly again!!! So away we went and I was worried as the gullies kicked the first 2 fairly quickly 1 boy from the opposition screamed we are smashing you!!! As if this was almost a catalyst, we put a few more behind the ball and started digging in and little by little, we turned the momentum our way. 3 goals to 1 at quarter time may have seen down but we had something... and we started playing that way Waylon inspiring in defence, and Foxx and Jacob locked down beautifully, Seth played his best game for the Burras and started sending the ball long. Brandon must have had 20 kicks as he countlessly mopped up loose kicks and reignited our next forward entry. Max, playing quite a tough role at full forward marked strong in the goal square after a pass from Lachlan and kicked truly for his first goal for the Blue Burras. We also injected Connor for his first game for the Blue Burras and, as rangy half-forward, Connor was clean in tight, once setting up Jake Winter to go on a long run, another ripping out of the pack and going on a nice run before centering for a goal, and at other times was smart with use of body and voice. Thomas had his best game, dodging, weaving, kicking 3 goals and marking strongly overhead. Jake Shannon improved and went on some trademark runs, Callum broke free as much as he got caught, but kept backing himself to take the game on, and Brodie Tilley was everywhere tonight, almost taking a huge speccy, many times taking on the man on the mark and delivering long. Sam burst through as well, showing much improvement and Jack had some nice moments taking on the game. It s hard to leave anyone out, but 8 goals 10 to 5 goals 4 against a team that has beaten us easily on numerous occasions shows our team s development it sets up a huge showdown with green next week the winner almost certainly will be the Golden Grove Football Club!!! Under 11 Red A slightly undermanned team took on Payneham at home on a perfect day for footy. A tough game was expected but after last week's excellent win spirits were high within the team. First quarter: A nice tackle early from Aidan H started proceedings for the quarter however Payneham were running in waves and had numbers everywhere around the ground resulting in three quick goals that put the boys on the back foot. The defence was battling hard as the ball kept being pumped into our defensive 50. Angus and Harrison tried hard to repel the attacks from the fullback line. Quarter time: 0-0 to 4-2. Second quarter: Payneham were well on top in the second-quarter with our boys finding it hard to stop the opposition's run and their ability to get numbers around the footy. A good passage of play extending from fullback to the forward pocket showed positive teamwork in a quarter dominated by Payneham. Half time: 0-0 to 9-6. Third quarter: A much better endeavour and effort was shown during the third quarter. Aidan T was covering a lot of ground and used his strength to burst through the pack. Harrison, Nate, Brody and Will were battling hard. Nathan was running off his man well in defence to cover opposition players. There was no score to show from the team's improved effort. Fourth quarter: There were excellent efforts by Riley H, Harry, Kayne and Max, who was moved into the ruck. While Payneham continued to out work us, there were some signs evident that with a lift in intensity, work-rate and defensive effort, the boys can compete with the top teams. Thank you to the under 10 boys who filled in for the game this week. Congratulations and well done to those who participated in the mini-league game on Friday night. The boys had a wonderful experience at the Parade and represented the club extremely well.

Under 13 Red I thought I'd update you all on U/13 Red s season so far. Our pre-season started early February and we were putting in the hard yards with some pretty solid running sessions. Whilst these sessions were very strenuous, the boys lapped it up and as the weeks went on, they could see and feel the results. We were also fortunate to pick up some new players to our team this year in Ajay Hem, Anton Tsouvalis, Jayden Vincent and Jacob Ferguson, all of these boys can play footy and we are very happy to have them in our group. We played two pre-season practice matches, one against Modbury and one against Tea Tree Gully. We used these games as exactly that, we tried many different players in many different positions during these matches and whilst we were soundly beaten on both occasions, we saw glimpses of what we were capable of, and even though we weren't exactly thrilled with our performances, the results weren't important, we learnt a lot about our structures and what worked well and what didn t. ROUND 1: Saw us come up against Tea Tree Gully. They were way too good in the practice match two weeks prior, however we knew that we were far better than what we dished up on that day and our boys were keen to turn around our pre-season form. We came out with much more spirit and determination and led nearly all day, but we just fell short at the end, losing by 8 points and although we were disappointed with the result, we were extremely happy with our performance. Unfortunately we were missing one our stars in Luke Bristow for this game and I m sure he could have been the difference had he been there. Ajay Hem and Corey Durdin were our best on the day but everyone stood up and played exceptionally well. ROUND 2: Gaza was a team that we haven't come up against for a couple of years. Gaza had come up from the Blue division and had a pretty good season in 2014 and were Grand Final runners up, but as we have seen in previous years from teams that have come up to play Red division, there is a massive gap in the calibre of competition. Our boys who were buoyed by the performance the week before were in no mood to be beaten by a newcomer to our division and they were simply outstanding. We took control from the first bounce and continued to score at will, our work rate and ball movement was first class and pretty exciting to watch. We had some outstanding players on the day, none better than Corey Durdin who was playing against his old team for the first time. He dominated the game and was simply outstanding, Ajay Hem was also brilliant, Michael Cavallaro, Josh Pearson and Nick Kelly also had terrific games kicking 16 goals between them and it would be fair to say that it was a complete team performance with everyone playing well. Our team suffered two injuries to key players today with Will Hurley breaking his arm and Josh Adey suffering a ligament injury in his foot. Both boys will be sorely missed and we can t wait to have them back. The score for this game was GGFC defeated Gaza ROUND 3: We met Broadview and these guys had also come up from the Blue division. They were Grand Final winners in 2014 and we were prepared for a tough game. We had no bench due to our injuries the week before and we were counting on each other to again step up and take on some extra responsibility. We started very well again and although Broadview played hard and moved the ball well at times, once again we were too strong all over the ground and came away big winners. GGFC defeated Broadview We had another outstanding team performance and everyone contributed to a clinical win. After 3 rounds, on face value you would think we had shaken off the pre-season jitters and were now functioning like a well oiled machine. Our coaching staff were still a little unsure as we had not yet beaten a team that is a genuine Red division power side. We were to get our chance in very next game. ROUND 4: Walkerville. This game was the real test that we were looking for and it was the opportunity we needed to get a real guide as to where we were at. Walkerville were coming off a good win against Tea Tree Gully the previous week and we know that they can match anyone on their day. They are a very good side and they were the team that beat us for fourth spot and a finals berth last year. We were well prepared for this match and every player wanted this one. We came out a little fumbly in the first five minutes but steadied and then began to take control of the game. We were 3 goals up at half time and our midfield group had been outstanding but it was a very warm day and without a bench, we were starting to feel the effects. We needed to give these guys a rest and we re-structured in the third quarter, Walkerville came out guns blazing and banged on 3 quick goals, we hit the three-quarter-time break a few points behind. The engine room was now fresh and ready to go, our backline had been outstanding all day and our forwards took charge as we tore the game apart in the final quarter kicking 6.3 to 0. We finished off the game like a side that wanted to prove a point. In house we think we are capable of extraordinary things, we are yet to prove it and wins like that are the only way to do it. We have some big games coming up and none bigger than our next game against Payneham, they were undefeated last year and are again so far this year. If we are to become the team we want to be, these are the games we must win.
