2 Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship Valley Rovers dig deep to secure replay By Denis Hurley Irish Examiner Kanturk 2-10 Valley Rovers 1-13: Two late points from sub Richie Butler secured Valley Rovers a draw in their Cork Premier IHC quarter-final with Kanturk in Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday.Liam O Keeffe s goal for Kanturk put them 2-7 to 0-7 in front with 14 minutes remaining, but from there to the end, Valleys outscored the Duhallow club by 1-6 to 0-3. Chris O Leary got 1-2 for the Innishannon side and subs Butler and Billy Crowley put over three and two points respectively. Valleys manager Joe Crowley paid tribute to the options off the bench. We re delighted to come out of it with a draw from where we were, he said. We plugged away and Chris O Leary got a great goal, the two subs made a difference, they scored five points. iit s a 20-man game nowadays. We ve a big panel and two more players to come back into it so hopefully we ll be ready to go again the next day. For his part, Kanturk manager Danny O Donoghue was also happy with the chance to avail of a second opportunity. We were lucky in the end, he said. I don t know would you say that they relaxed, but we certainly lost our shape big-time in the forwards. They [Valleys] started winning a lot of breaks, they were getting on to them faster, the uncontested ball was a worry. We worked the two goals well but it was worrying to leave such a lead slip. The first half was closely fought but short on quality in slippery conditions, with the sides level on four occasions after Donncha Kenneally s opener for Kanturk in the third minute. Darragh Looney in the Valleys midfield was impressively industrious, while Ian Walsh and Alan O Keeffe did well in attack for Kanturk early on, O Keeffe putting his side 0-3 to 0-2 ahead in the eighth minute. Darragh Murphy tied matters after he blocked down Lorcán McLoughlin well and then O Leary s 65 gave Valleys the lead for the first time, but with Aidan Walsh beginning to take over at centre-back, and McLoughlin dropping deep from his starting berth of wing-forward, Kanturk got on top. It was McLoughlin who was the architect of Ian Walsh s levelling score and, after Liam O Keeffe s free, the county star set up his colleague Aidan Walsh for a fine point on the right sideline for the first two-point lead of the game. Eoin O Reilly had a Valleys response on 25, though Liam O Keeffe should have restored the Kanturk advantage with a free, awarded after O Leary had caught goalkeeper Anthony Nash with a late challenge. While a scuffle ensued, referee Mark Maher opted against any serious action. Early in the second half, Liam O Keeffe and Looney exchanged points but Martin Riordan s goal for Kanturk, bundled in after Willie Burke had saved from Liam O Keeffe, looked like being critical in a tight game. O Leary pointed for Valleys in response, only for Ian Walsh to latch onto a break from a clearance and flick the ball perfectly to Liam O Keeffe for a close-range finish. A semi-final with Ballinhassig beckoned, but Valleys weren t for surrendering. An O Leary free and one from Butler steadied them and then a long-range Burke free fell for O Leary to fire a shot past Nash and bring the gap back to a point. Two from Ian Walsh looked to have swung the momentum back the way of Kanturk, but Billy Crowley announced his arrival with a pair of scores in a minute. Even still, Nash s free from his own half made it 2-10 to 1-12, but Butler gave Valleys hope with his second. In the final minute, Darragh Crowley found him with a well-placed pass and he did the needful. A lack of injury time meant no chance of a winner, with a second meeting required. 3 Junior A football League Valley Rovers Junior A footballers took on Courcey Rovers in the league in Ballinspittle on Tuesday evening. Valleys had the better of the opening half and lead by 2-4 to 0-3 at half time with the goals coming from Derek Canty and Eoin Fallon. Courceys made more of a game of it in the second half scoring 1-2 in the opening quarter. Valleys scored 1-6 in the second half with Eoin Fallon getting his second goal of the game. Valleys ran out winners on a scoreline of 3-10 to 1-5. U16 football Championship Our U16's got their football championship back on track with a comprehensive victory over St Vincents in Carrigaline. A great start saw Valleys lead by 3.01 to no score after ten mins, a point from Cathal Manning and a goal from Jack Higgins plus two more from Charlie Lyons did the damage. a further two pointed frees from Charlie, a point from Niall Lawton and a fourth goal from Daniel Kenneally and a final point from Cathal left it 4.05 to 0.03 at the break. U9 Hurling Our U9 s fielded two teams on Saturday morning at a well attended hurling blitz in Bandon. Grouped with Eire Og, Clonakilty and Bandon our U9 s displayed a high level of skill and determination, and were more than a match for their opponents. Moving the sliothar at speed on the ground and striking well from the hand, our lads scored some great goals and long range points throughout. The many training sessions and games played over the course of the season was very evident and we encourage our players to continue to get out and practice their hurling drills and skills at every opportunity. Valley Rovers 5.08 St Vincents This was a super win in all ways for this young team who now face St Nicks for a second time. 4 saw two shots cleared off the line and also hit both the post and the bar. O Donovan Rossa managed to lift the siege in the last few minutes and hit Valleys on the break with final score of the game. Valley Rovers Ladies 12A 1-7 O Donovan Rossa 5-2 Valley Rovers U12A Ladies Football team suffered defeat in the replay of the West Cork Final to O Donovan Rossa at Roscarbery last Friday night. The final scoreline was not a true reflection of the difference between the teams, but O Donovan Rossa were able to take the goal chances that game their way which gave them the edge Valleys played into the breeze in the first half and contained the opposition well, and in fact were the first to seize the initiative with a well taken goal by Aisling Fennelly and a point from Orla O Sullivan putting them ahead. However O Donovan Rossa began to use the element, and hit back half way through the half with two goals in 5 minutes putting them in front and they tagged on another couple of points to lead 2-2 to 1-1. Valleys had a chance to reduce the gap when Orla O Sullivan had a penalty opportunity but her well struck shot was brilliantly saved by the goal keeper. The girls can feel very proud of their performance on the night. This was their third game this season against O Donovan Rossa, and both sides have won a game each with ther other being a draw. Valleys however worked hard and began to dominate possession and a string of points from Orla O Sullivan (3), Niamh Crowley and Kate Lynch reduced the gap to four points 4-2 to 1-7 Valleys threw everything into attack now and all the play for the next ten minutes was in the opposition half, but they could not get the goal they needed, as they Page 4 of 6

5 Camogie Under 16s who beat Barryroe The Valleys Under 10 camogie team won the Tony Jeffers Shield in a sunny Ballinhassig last Saturday, much to the delight of the big following. Valley Rovers were too strong for Barryroe and Ballinhassig in the group games but lost narrowly to a strong Eire og (who went on to win the cup) and Valleys progressed to the semi-final of the shield in good shape. All 15 girls contributed strongly in the semi final and Valleys proved too strong for the Glen. There was great excitement then as the valleys took on Barryroe in the final and again the girls played fantastically well, showing great skill, accuracy, hand passing and tackling and some tremendous striking on the ground and out of their hands. The girls stuck to the task throughout the 20 minutes and held on for a great win. There was a huge cheer when Captain Cara O'Sullivan accepted the Tony Jeffers shield on behalf of the club. Unfortunately we were only allowed bring 15 girls on the day but the 15 girls represented their team, club and families with great gusto and a bit of all important fun. They all played extremely well included the following: Anna Collins, Fiona Twohig, Cara O'Sullivan, Ciara O'Sullivan Erika Crowley, Isabel Linehan, Ella Ronan, Lucy McCarthy, Aoife O'Donovan, Kate Manning, Maria Hayes, Alicia Cronin, Fia Johnson, Nicole O'Connor, Orla Manning, Niamh Quinn. 6 Valley Rover Ladies Football and Camogie Club are running a joint fundraising initiative called the Golden Goal. We are selling scratch cards with a time on it ( example 12 mins and 43 seconds). If the first goal comes in at this time in the All Ireland Mens Hurling Final the winner gets 500 euro! If the ticket is unclaimed, the 500 goes to charity. Tickets will be distributed by the coaches at training sessions over the coming week. Each family will receive 21 tickets to sell. Tickets are 1 for 2 euro or 3 for 5 euro. Unsold tickets should be returned as soon as possible. The Munster Council is currently undertaking a survey of?parents involved in the GAA. We would encourage all parents to participate.
