Fall 2009 Shenandoah Area Council Camporee Medieval Scouting Times October 9-11, 2009 Jefferson County Fairgrounds Jefferson County, WV
A message from your Camporee Chiefs... Welcome to your Shenandoah Area Council-Wide Fall Camporee!! Your Camporee Chiefs and staff have spent many hours to assure this will be one of the most memorable Scout events yet! Here you will experience the authentic games and activities of the early 1200 s in medieval England. Knights illustrated the love of freedom, the hatred of tyranny and the joy of vigorous living. They lived a mirthful life, passing the time in games or bouts of cudgel play. Your rewards will be many. But above all else the order of the day will be to have fun and merry. To accomplish this task you will have but to work together as a team, just as the Knights of old learned. Camporee Chiefs, Troop 6 PLC
Camporee Overview - Our camping experience will begin with a story that takes us back in time to a place of ole - A place where chivalry rules and cunning survives. The games of the day will help you practice your keen senses. King Arthur has invited the realm to be present at his Festive Board where all will gather for Joy and merriment where plates will be plentiful and cups runithover. Along the way, we will meet up with the likes of Sir Lancelot, Sir Gawain, Sir Galahad, and others. Clues are plentiful, and the rewards will be great. Who knows, you may even come across the likely spot of Merlin s Hut. We can feel an air of mystery, as if the ancient trees tell a story, if only we can hear. Camporee Camping Rules Off-ground camp fires will be permitted ONLY No RADIOS or IPOD s OF ANY KIND. No alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs! No guns, fireworks, bow and arrows, illegal weapons. No pets or small children. Use the buddy system at all times. This is a Scouting event; leave frisbees, footballs, and other non-camping items at home. Location: Jefferson County Fair Grounds in Jefferson County, WV
Check-in and registration will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, October 9 th, and again from 7:00AM to 8:00AM on Saturday, October 10 th. Note: Troops that submit their fully paid and completed registration prior to September 18th will enjoy drive-through registration at the gate. Campsites are assigned in the order of registration. Parking: Parking is limited. You will be given (1) one pass per unit with limited time requirement to allow you into camping area. Equipment will be unloaded at your designated campsite area. You will then be directed to the parking location at the fairgrounds. All equipment must be unloaded: no vehicles will be allowed to stay in the campsites. Organization: Come organized in advance as patrols. All activities and events will be competed and scored as a patrol during the day events. The SPL/ASPL needs to join up with a patrol in their troop for the day. You will be getting dirty and possibly wet in some of the events, so dress accordingly. Emergencies and First Aid: A telephone for emergency use only will be on-site. Outside callers may reach the camp by calling A first aid station will be located at the Camporee HQ. All injuries must be reported. Sanitation: There are restrooms and port-a-johns on site, as well as an ample supply of fresh water. As scouts, this event will encourage self-reliance and we ask that what you bring into camp, take it with you. Meals: All meals will be conducted within the troop campsites. Lost and Found: A lost and found station will be located at the First Aid Station. Departure from the Camporee: When you have picked up your campsite and made ready for departure, bring your campsite sign to the Registration Office. Notification will be given to the check-out team to look over the site. The checkout team will give your unit a red vehicle pass to allow the vehicle into the camping area for loading.

DESCRIPTION OF GAMES Teeterboard Jousting Quarter Staff Merlin s Table Event Table Feast Sir Lancelot s Lair Two teeterboards 24 inch in diameter with 4 inch high rockers, jousting poles are provided. Place the rocker boards so that the players are just within reach of each other. On signal each tries to push the other off the jousting rocker boards. First player to push the other off the rocker wins bout. One Shilling for participation, One shilling for each win of the joust. One Scout Stave Players face one another, with feet placed in a wide, firm stance. Players grip stick firmly with both hands, each with his left hand on the inside of opponent s right hand. On signal, each tries to get the stick to touch the ground on his right side by pushing down with the right hand and pulling up with the left. Player succeeding in two out of three tries is the winner. One Shilling for participation, One shilling for each win of the staff. A flat table with handles on two sides, a large ball, a receiving mechanism. This is a team event; two scouts will take the tray (one on each handle) transport the ball along the course to the end where they will place the ball in the receiving tray. The Scouts must go over the rough roads and under the fallen tree. This must be done without dropping the ball from the table, and if the ball is dropped, the participants must start all over from the beginning. The best time for the patrol teams will be the score reported. This event will be by time and cunning. Fastest time wins. One Shilling for participation. Additional shillings for accuracy and time. Crackers On signal, each Scout in each patrol eats crackers without the use of hands. This event will be by time and cunning. One Shilling for Participation. Blind folds for each participant. On signal, each patrol member will be blindfolded and must locate their other patrol members by patrol yell. The winning patrol is the one that successfully finds its members. One Shilling for participation. Additional shillings for accuracy and time.
Catapult shoot Catapults, Balloons, water. On signal, Scouts must release a balloon to be caught not closer than 10 ten feet by a patrol member. The greatest number of balloons caught by the patrol wins. This event will be by time and cunning. One Shilling for participation. Additional shillings for accuracy and time and number of balloons caught. Directional By-pass The Knights of the Roundtable have been kept busy protecting King Arthur s wealth and are allowed to share in its growth. For a share of this you will participate in a game of cunning to discover where Arthur has left your share. Be cautious not to let the other Sir Mordred discover your intentions. On signal each patrol will follow compass heading to various landmarks of Camelot. Each landmark will provide a clue to the location of King Arthur s Gold. You will receive your share by successfully following the clues. One Shilling for participation. Additional shillings for accuracy and time. Visit Knight s Tavern (Draft Beer of the Root) Finding your way through an unfriendly forest just minutes from the Castle by those with courage enough to be true, and brave enough to join the Knights in the fight for justice will find a place where Sir Bedivere might tell you a story. Turn an ear or two to a minstrel trio with song from medieval times. Where Sir Constantine might linger for an arm wrestle or two. Your strength and cunning may be challenged over a game or two, but fun and merry are the order of the day. Your tokens of the day will be taken in exchange for a drink, or two. Patch Trading Bring your patches and display them at Knight s Tavern, trade with your friends or just make new friends. The King has proclaimed that there will be no tariff for your trading transactions. Blacksmith in the Glen (intro to Metalwork merit-badge) Come visit the Blacksmith where you can learn how metal is forged into products such as cups, plates, and even shields are made. Come see the coals glow and hammer pound over the anvil. Leather Craft Mysteries (into to the Leatherwork merit-badge) Come visit the Tanner where you can learn how leather is formed into products such as wallets, bags, and shoes.
Special Items of the Day Sir Mordred - Beware of the destroyer of the realm, he lingers in many dark places within Camelot. Those caught with him may find themselves in the High Tower of the Kings Castle where a fine of gold coin or token may be needed for release. Patch Trading - Bring your patches and display them at the Knight s Tavern, trade with your friends or just make new friends. The King has proclaimed that there will be no tariff for your trading transactions. Visitor Center - A special center has been established to welcome invited guest to give a hands-on view of Scouting at its best. Leader Hospitality Room - come join us at a place where leaders of the scouting realm can talk of the day s events. Scout Snack Bar Scouts in need of a between-meals snack can make their way to the snack bar next to the Knight s Tavern. Knights of the Roundtable - A group of Eagle Scouts who wander throughout Camelot. You might find a friend in these soles of the trees when your game does not go quite the same as you expected. As in a Knight s day, they help those in need during the games that are presented and just as quickly as they appear, they vanish to help another person in need. Wanted Posters have been posted by order of King Arthur with reward. If your patrol finds one of these persons, a signature will gain you extra points for your patrol during the games of the day. The signature card needs to be turned in by 5:30 P.M. on Saturday at the Camporee HQ. Awards Ceremony will be the conclusion to the Camporee.
