Bookings will be taken in January Facing up to your mistakes The rugby World Cup has been fascinating but in the end fairly predictable; as I write Australia and the All Blacks have just got through to the final. As always there have been mismatches along the way but some of the so called "minnows" have performed way beyond expectations, notably Japan. There have also been some very questionable refereeing decisions - one of which prevented Scotland from progressing to the semi finals - I have to keep reminding myself that it not the winning, it's the taking part... Notwithstanding the human frailty displayed by some of the referees there has also been a very refreshing side to the competition. I always find it amazing to watch a towering 20 stone forward accept his punishment and say to the diminutive referee "sorry sir" as he retreats. This is in marked contrast to the behaviour of the stars of the game which usually takes centre stage in our culture. Our Football premier league has some of the best paid and most famous players in the world but there isn't the same degree of respect for referees. The referee is often berated for decisions by players and fans alike. This is something I think this game is the poorer for. Perhaps whoever ultimately wins the rugby World Cup (if I were a betting man I would put everything on New Zealand) the real winner has probably been the game itself. Sometimes the way a game is played is more important than the eventual winner. And perhaps it is a parable for life - respect for others and being able to face up to your mistakes are the most important things of all. Fr Matthew 3

For further information please call or visit our website Leaves & Compost November means hard work in the garden, writes Adam McKay Well, after praising October in my last column, I find November to be a tough month. There is plenty of heavy duty work to be done with not a lot of reward to show. Take for instance leaf clearing and collecting. I visit my larger gardens (one acre and above) every week; and with any garden that is bigger than a football pitch there are trees and more than just a couple! So I turn up with blower in hand (actually on my back), I wouldn t even attempt raking as the will to live would diminish after ten square metres of pulling the large burnt orange, dirty yellow, crimson red and caramel brown debris that you call leaves, but I call confetti. It makes my lifestyle choice sound much more glamorous don t you think! Now don t get me wrong, blowing leaves across a lawn into piles to collect can be fun in its own little way (mainly for my dog, Monty who dives into the piles). But two to three hours later you realise that you now have to load them up into the wheelbarrow to place them into the leaf pen, which is always at the far end of the garden with the compost heap. Which is understandable as who wants to see decomposing leaves 10 Continued overleaf 11

Far from it, the clearing and collecting can be tough, but I chose to be a gardener and knew the highs and lows that would litter my path (no pun intended). But, as I said at the start of this article, at this time of year, there is very little reward. After clearing my clients autumn confetti, their gardens once again look tidy and the lawns green and healthy. But by now the clocks have gone back and my client won t be home until the sun sets. It s just a bit souldestroying knowing that your hard work is not benefiting the person that matters. So why not leave them there for a couple of weeks and save all that effort? Leaving lawns covered in fallen deprives them of valuable light (which as we know is in short supply now) that keeps the grass strong and healthy and stops it rotting along with the leaves that are laying on it. Removing the leaves also helps prevent worm casts, as worms won t venture to the surface looking for nourishment to bring down with them. And leaves are a favourite of theirs. Worms do wonders to the soil by aerating it but in the lawn they can be a menace.
