1 Volume 34, Issue 10 October 2017 Prez Sez I thought I would start this article with a brief update on the stocking study. The club in conjunctions with the Wisconsin DNR has been involved in a side by side comparison study of Leech Lake and Wisconsin strain growth rates since The club has been using money raised through our various fundraisers, grant money and donations to purchase the Leech lake strain muskies, PIT tags, and scanners used to collect recapture data. The Wisconsin DNR and the club work together to stock both of the strains and collaboratively collect data. The DNR collects data by spring fike netting and the club is using scanner hits of fish that are caught. At first, there was a great deal of concern because the Leechers were not showing up at all during spring netting or being caught. The initial thought was that the leech lake strain fish were not surviving at all. The club continued stocking efforts despite the early reviews and eventually both netting and scanner hits have produced a usable data set. What we know so far: 1). That the size of fingerlings stocked for both the Leech and Wisconsin strain matters, fish that are at least10 inches or bigger have a much better survival rate and fingerlings that are 8 inches or less do not survive at all. 2). Year classes have some natural variations in survival rates. For example, the 2009 and 2010 stocking classes had the best survival and recapture rates that any other year class for both strains. 3). The DNR uses a fancy equation called the Von Bertalanffy to calculate growth rates. Thus far, growth rates are not significantly different between the two strains. However, the top end of the curve probably has not been fully established for both species given that growth rates for muskies slows down with age. 4). The DNR has told the club that there are enough Leech Lake strain muskies in Lake Monona to complete the side by side study. The board is starting to consider several different options moving forward. I would like to hear from members who have questions or input. Should we continue the current study, modify our stocking efforts, or put money into other types of activities? Also, I would like to extend an invite to all members who would like to attend the board meetings. ~continued next page~ Upcoming General Meeting The next meeting will be October 9, 7:00 PM at the 5100 Bar in McFarland. Our meeting speaker will be Larry Ramsell. He will speaking about tracking muskies on Eagle Lake and the Chippewa flowage. Muskie Ink Page 1

2 Prez Says Continued Speaking of data collection, I would like to extend a big thanks to Gary Hoffman and other members who make the annual PIT TAG CHALLUNGE a huge success. Our next meeting will be at 7 p.m. October 9 th at the 5100 club. Larry Ramsell will be our featured speaker and the Vilas County outing will take place later that week on October 13 and 14th. This outing offers an excellent chance to meet some of our members, catch some fish and enjoy a terrific meal. Please see our website for other upcoming events, meetings and sign up forms. As always, stay safe and GO make some memories. Winston Hopkins - President CCM CCMI 2017 Schedule of Events Mark your calendars for the upcoming meetings, fishing expos, and club outings! 3 Release Report Todd Berge- Release Chairman / ccmireleasechair@gmail.com Fall is in the air! The question is: Do I go musky fishing, or do I go bow hunting? The answer, of course, I do both! Good luck convincing the wife of that one. If you can only do one, and that one is musky fishing, it is definitely time for some sucker fishing. If you have not tried this technique yet, I advise you find someone who has done it and try it out. It is definitely one of my favorite ways to catch a musky. Just remember to be safe out there. The water is cold and I know I'm usually bundled up. It would be quite difficult to get back in the boat if a mishap were to happen. In my old age, I have decided it wise to wear a life preserver when I'm out in the fall. Especially when I'm by myself. More big fish are on the board! Take time to congratulate anyone you know on the list below. They might even give you a secret or two. 5 The 2017 PIT-TAG Challenge Outing Report The annual CCMI PIT-TAG Challenge outing was held on September 23, 2017 on Lake Monona. The outing s goal was to catch as many muskies as possible with pit-tags to help bolster the data in the CCMI Leach Lake vs Wisconsin strain study. Forty-three fisherman, two from the Rockford Flatlanders club, participated on a day that topped 90 by the afternoon. Not surprising with the very warm temperatures the muskies were quite lethargic, as reported by many who had follows, and only two were caught. Marc Rortvedt Dewey Stewart First place and travelling trophy was won by Marc Rortvedt who caught a 26 inch muskie which did not have a pit-tag. Second place and pit-tag winner was Dewey Stewart who caught a inch muskie which did have a pit-tag. This was a leech lake fish that was stocked in April 2017 at 11.6 inches. This fish grew 9 inches in six months. After fishing the participants were treated to a brat and hamburger picnic at Olbrich park. There were many red faces due to either embarrassment, for not catching a fish, or more likely being out in the blazing sun all day. The outing was organized by board member Gary Hoffman. Thanks goes to those many participants who assisted in unloading Gary s vehicle and preparing the food. Special thanks goes to Sam Tobey for volunteering to grilling hamburgers and brats. The 2018 date is set for Saturday September 22. We hope to see your participation in 2018 Pit-Tag challenge outing. Available at Dorn Midvale and D&S Bait Muskie Ink Page 5
