The Whole-In-One November 2018 Last month my topic was We Need to Talk. The Board has scheduled two all-member sessions in January of The first of these will be January 22, 2019 at 5:30p.m., and the second will be January 24, 2019, at 6p.m. I had hoped that we would be able too schedule these meetings sooner but with the Holiday s fast approaching, it was felt that scheduling the all-member meetings in January would insure better attendance. As stated in my previous letter, the Board is looking for open discussions with regard to the future Club and the Board will present an agenda of what we feel are the most pressing issues facing us for the years to come, together with proposed solutions. Obviously the Board is looking for direction from the membership, and we hope that you can attend at least one of these most important meetings. While on the subject of the future of our Club, I am sure that you have ideas that would be beneficial to the Club. I would ask that you either drop a note or Joe with those specific ideas so we can begin compiling a list. Please don t get the notion that any idea you may have to benefit our Club is insignificant. It is not, and along with other good ideas that we are able to implement, it could only benefit the Club. Please contact Joe immediately as we hope to have a number of your ideas that we can present at our all-member meetings in January. As some of our golfers know, we have had a few challenges with our bunkers and a couple of the greens. These matters are being attended to as quickly as possible, and based on the most current information, our problem greens are now recovering and our traps will benefit from the better drainage and slight design changes. I think you all will be pleased with the results. Please don t forget that we are open for Pickle Ball. We are all set up for that and I am told by the people who play the game that it is a blast to play, so go out and try it and bring a friend with you! Please keep in mind that the upcoming Holiday Season will be a busy one for us at the Club and as usual, there will be several events and parties we can all enjoy and look forward to. As always, thank you for your continued support of our wonderful Club. Jesse J. Johnson. Jr. BOD President 1
Quick Hits Quick Hits gives us the opportunity to acknowledge our members, staff and suppliers for the good things happening every day at Elizabeth Manor. If you run across any of this month s gold star recipients, please let them know how much you appreciate them. Teresa Waterfield and Tawana Honey Grimes, Employees. Kudos to Teresa and Honey, who have been selected as employees of the quarter by the House and Social Committees. As we all know, Teresa is always on top of her game and always find extra special ways to make our members appreciate our F&B services. As a supervisor, she is well respected among her peers. As a waitress, she is tops. There is no Honey sweeter than our Honey and certainly no culinary supervisor around that can match her effort, passion, or her crazy delicious soups. Teresa and Honey, Elizabeth Manor always endeavors to have an edge over the competition. Many thanks to you for creating a greater edge when it comes to our restaurant services. Would you like your favorite college flag to fly below the US flag in front of the Clubhouse? If so, go to college flags and banners.com and purchase your school s 3X5 pole flag and bring it to the office. It will fly in the order received. Scott McElroy and Pat Barham, Pigskin Fans and Members. Meechigan and Richmond flags are flying high again this month and for good reason according to Scott and Pat. The spiders are a natural for this time of the year as their intimidating and spooky spiders is one-of-a-kind in American college sports. The Wolverines are high in the college football playoff picture at the moment. Scott has an in with the conductor of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra (with whom he works) and predicts that Beethoven s Ode To Joy will resonate in Orchestra Hall if the Big Blue nation ekes past those guys in Happy Valley, New Brunswick, Bloomington and that school in Columbus. Pat and Stella Barham have no such aspirations for U of R they simply enjoy dining at the Club and playing a little golf. Thanks for supporting the Club guys! Ann Depriest, Joanne Meagher, Sheryl Luyo and Mary Pat Ramey, Tennis Members. Another tennis member record of $1,200 + dollars collected to fight the fight. These selfless tennis members break the mold when it comes to doing good things for the Club and the community. Ann, Joanne, Sheryl and Pat combined their efforts to elicit a nice donation for Breast Cancer Research during the 2018 Elizabeth Manor Tennis Doubles Round-Robin Fundraiser. Congratulations ladies and Mike for the good work you have done and to the E/M tennis community for being so generous. The Overall Winner of the Event was Cancer Research. Luv, Set, Match! 2
Quick Hits continued Gail Thompson, Cody Shumway, Candice Dooley and Jaclyn Abraham, Member/Employees. Gail is Elizabeth Manor s Queen of Halloween. She always does a terrific job pulling together our annual Kids Trick or Treat Golf Cart Extravaganza and has outdone herself again this past Sunday. If you don t believe me, look at the smiley faces below after successfully delighting, spooking and tricking members throughout the neighborhood. Many thanks to Candice and Jaclyn who did a beautiful job decorating the Card Room where the kids enjoyed an early dinner, cookie decorating and interacting with kids just being kids. Cody did his best to serve food that wouldn t have the kids bouncing off the walls or having to pay early visits to the dentist. Many thanks to Stan & Kay Dobson, Vic (the Friendly Ghost) Robillard, Laura Johnson, Monte and J.T. Sykes, Linda McKone and the always frightful but delightful Carlson Rowe for hosting our trick or treaters at the homes. THE KIDS AND THEIR PARENTS HAD A BLAST & SO DID WE!! To all involved, many thanks for doing such a BOOtiful job again this year. 3

Greens by Jeremy Bailey October has been a great month with cooler temperatures. On October 22nd, we saw the first frost in areas of our rough. We will soon see leaves changing colors and the Bermuda grass go dormant. Blowing and mulching will be a priority for this month, as the leaves and pine needles fall. We have seeded and top dressed our troubled greens and have already started to see some recovery. We expect more in the coming month. Fairways have been widened and the heights have been increased. In addition, the rough heights have been decreased. This will make for much friendlier play out there. We have started work on #9 bunker drain and hope to continue more bunker projects throughout the winter months. 7 Jeremy Bailey Superintendent

Chef Cody Shumway 1/2 cup onion (chopped) 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup white wine vinegar 2-1/2 cups pineapple (chopped) 2 teaspoons curry powder 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1. In a heavy saucepan, combine the onion, honey, vinegar, pineapple, curry powder, ginger, salt, and red pepper flakes and mix well. 2. Put the pan on the stovetop and cook over high heat until the mixture comes to a full rolling boil, stirring frequently. 3. Reduce the heat to low and cook the chutney, stirring occasionally so the food doesn't burn, until the pineapple is tender and the mixture is thickened, about 20 to 30 minutes. 4. Take the pan off the heat and cool the chutney completely. Then stir well and decant into another container with a tight lid. Refrigerate the chutney for up to 4 days, or freeze up to 3 months. 9
