G E N E R A L M A N A G E R S M E S S A G E : Dear Members, I hope this note finds you in good health and spirits and enjoying these beautiful autumn days and nights. As many of you know, the sale of MCC from CNL to Arcis closed on September 30 th. Today we learned that Arcis had notified my superiors at BCG that there will be a management transition effective December 1, 2014, presumably to Eagle Golf. I notified our staff and then telephoned Member Council President, Mr. Mike Althouse to share the news. I told Mr. Althouse that I hope to continue as GM, working with my outstanding colleagues here at MCC as we strive to provide a hospitable and welcoming environment and a positive member experience. I also acknowledged that transitions frequently include uncertainties. I intend to make new ownership aware of all the capital construction plans that you, our members have identified and prioritized as vital and necessary improvements to the clubhouse, patio, practice area and swimming pool. As I ve said before, it is our collective hope that new ownership will fund these projects with enthusiasm and robust financial support. Please don t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or I can be helpful in any way. As a reminder, E-Z Pay will not be running for the month of September. All E-Z Pay enrolled members are asked to pay, by Check OR Cash Only, here at the club by Wednesday, October 15th. We apologize about any inconvenience this may cause. Please contact Shakia Stewart at or sstewart@montgomerycc.com with any questions. As always, I thank you for your membership and ongoing support of MCC. Respectfully, Tim Woodruff General Manager twoodruff@montgomerycc.com Welcome New Members The Kushner Family Mr. and Mrs. Ash Ms. Laura Christian The Oristian Family Mr. and Mrs. Merrill

The 12 person Council advises MCC management on the short and long term goals of the members as well as the efficient and effective operation of the club. The Council meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm. In accordance with the current bylaws eligibility for the member council includes all adult members whose memberships include golf privileges and who are in good standing. Council Members are limited to 3 year terms, so at least 4 new members need to be selected each year. As MCC transitions once again to a new owner it is very important that we maintain a strong member council to inform the new owners as to the needs and desires of the membership. We are currently seeking strong candidates to fill the positions of the 4 retiring members. The ideal candidate will actively represent the views of the membership in general and provide suggestions and viable solutions to management to make the club better serve the membership. Candidates must be available to attend one meeting each month as well as occasional special meetings. The nomination committee will be seeking nominations for the council positions from now until October 10 th. If you would like to run for one of the council positions please contact one of the nominating committee members listed below before October 10 th. 13 M ONTGO ME RY COUNTRY CLUB T EE TIME S NE WSLETTE R P AGE 13 HANDICAP COMMITTEE MESSAGE: Penalty Scores So, the last time you posted a score did you look at your scoring record? Did you notice any scores with a P next to them? Do you know what the P stands for? Do you know how the score got posted? Well in handicap parlance that P means Penalty Score. But is it really a penalty? More on that later. First, the good news. In the last 2 years the number of penalty scores has been reduced significantly. That means the club overall is doing a much better job posting every score. Give yourselves a pat on the back. So now, how do you get the penalty score? Here s how. Every posting period the handicap committee chairwoman reviews the tee sheets maintained by the starters. If your name appears on the tee sheet we look for a score to be posted on that day in the handicap system. It s a daunting task, but it has to be done if we want to be allowed to use the USGA handicap system. If there is no score posted we are required by rule to post a score for you and mark it with the P. So what score do we post? We have no idea at this point how you actually scored that day, so we can t post that. We select the lowest score in your recent record and post that for you. Why that score? That obviously represents your best potential score. It wouldn t be fair to post anything lower, and it probably wouldn t be meaningful if we posted anything higher. But if you diligently post every score, how did you get a penalty score? Here are 3 possibilities: You couldn t post on the day you played. When you did post did you remember to enter the date you played? We see many cases with 2, 3 or more 18 hole rounds posted on the same date. We know you didn t play 5 rounds in one day, but we have to post scores for the dates that don t have anything posted. You didn t finish the posting process. The committee has asked the MSGA to modify the system to include confirmation that your score has been successfully posted. The web program includes this feature, but the handicap computer at the club does not. When you post successfully your scoring record will be displayed for review. If you don t get that far you haven t posted your score. Your name was on the tee sheet but you didn t play a postable round. Maybe it was one of those Saturday afternoon 9 hole scrambles that didn t get properly noted on the tee sheet. Now you have a penalty score, what do you do about it? You could do nothing. It ll go away in 20 scores anyway. But what if you want it to be removed? Well, you need to send an to the handicap committee to explain why you think the penalty score shouldn t be there. The new address for the committee is handicapmcc@gmail.com If you have a reasonable explanation the score can be removed. It helps if you re not a chronic offender. Fair handicaps make the game enjoyable for everyone. Fall is my favorite time of the year with the leaves turning and our fall renovation practices underway. Even though we still have several events in October to work around we have been busy aerifying areas of the course, seeding, and getting ready to apply some fertilizer. I always say what we do now will always pay off next year. Currently we have completed aerifying all the tees and soon will start to verticut the tees that have a lot of bentgrass in them. We took all of the aerification cores from the tees and dumped them on the range in the bare areas in the landing area to help fill in the low spots. First we spread the cores over the bare area, seeded those areas with tall fescue seed and then tamped down the soil to have good seed to soil contact and then those areas were covered with straw to aid in germination and prevent any wash outs. The next area we will start to aerify will be the approaches. We will continue to dump those cores on the range as well filling in as many bare areas we can. Just like every fall we have the famous hayride during our Halloween pumpkin painting so come out and enjoy the ride that Farmer Phil takes the kids on around the course. Also please visit my blog to see pictures of course projects and any updates with what we are doing at the club. In closing please remember to fix your ball marks and one other, replace your divots, rake the bunkers after you have entered them and place the rake with the handle pointing out.
