Wow!1 This winter seems like a repeat of the last! At least the course is getting a much needed break from play. Hopefully, in couple weeks, we will all be outside and enjoying some much needed warmer temperatures. The Entire Staff is very energized about the upcoming 2015 season here at our club. It s not too late to join an association. Please be sure to explore the benefits that the MGA, WGA, SMGA, and the Ladies 9 Holers have to offer. Additionally, with the support from our Member Council, a NEW and EXCITING, membership initiative is planned for Montgomery Country Club and revolves solely around our current members. This new initiative is MEMBERSHIP BY INVITATION and this works exactly as it sounds. Your club is asking you, all of our current members, to grow the club from within by inviting friends, family, and co-workers to explore membership opportunities. By implementing Membership By Invitation, the club s membership will be filled with members who share similar interests and backgrounds. In Mid-March, the club will be sending, via mail, Invitations to everyone so you can in fact invite a friend to explore membership here at MCC!! Don t forget, there is a Membership Open House on Saturday, March 28th. We would certainly enjoy seeing you with your friend(s) at this event!! Please RSVP as soon as possible. Furthermore, your Club will be featuring prospective member events every month throughout the year. Additional details will be available soon about these prospective/current member events. As a reminder, growing the membership from within directly benefits you. Not only will you receive an account credit up to $436.00, but you will also be eligible to win our Membership By Invitation Challenge at the end of the year. The top members with the most referrals will WIN PRIZES!! These prizes will range from a Vacation Trip to Club Gift Certificates!! Be on the lookout for the REFERAL LEADERBOARD in the clubhouse. Thank You all for your patronage and your willingness to help your club prosper. PEOPLE GO TO WHERE THEY ARE INVITED AND STAY WHERE THEY ARE APPRECIATED. With this practice our Clubs Membership rosters will be filled with a cohesive group of people sharing similar interests, backgrounds and lifestyles. Each Member has the opportunity to sponsor friends, co-workers, and family members into Membership. An Invitation to consider Membership is received by the candidate and a warm, welcoming enrollment process begins to take effect with the Sponsor being involved. Once the candidate becomes a Member, they will receive an Invitation to give to a friend to consider membership, thus the Membership By Invitation continues. Our Philosophy is to grow the club from the inside out with the help from our biggest assets, our Members.

5 M ONTGO ME RY COUNTRY CLUB T EE TIME S NE WSLETTE R P AGE 5 G O L F P R O F E S S I O N A L N O T E S : And so it continues: Snow, snow, snow! Those of you who know I m originally from the Midwest must be thinking I feel right at home this winter, however, I didn t move here to enjoy this type of weather. If you ever wondered what it would be like to live through a Wisconsin Winter, now you know! Vendor accounts, with the big ones open first: Titleist/ Footjoy, Taylormade and a few other companies have finally opened and some of our spring orders are beginning to arrive. We will be adding more and more accounts as we enter March, catching up as fast as we can with the orders that we couldn t fill from late last year after our accounts were shut down in transition. As for spring merchandise, it will be arriving shortly from some companies that opened their accounts for us in time for a quick ship. Titleist balls, clubs and gloves, Footjoy shoes and gloves, Taylormade clubs, Adidas/Ashworth clothing and Greg Norman merchandise will arrive in March some of it even before the snow melts! Virtually every item left over from last season is on clearance price, sure to entice those of you looking for a great deal to start off the year. On the staff front, Dan has indicated he wishes to return this year and in response we have offered him his position back in a part time capacity-meaning full time from April through September. He ll be handling similar duties, so although we will all continue to help setting up and running member events, Dan will be your go to guy again this season. We are excited he changed his mind and asked us to create a space for him this coming season! With Randal s departure, I will be heading up the lesson program and with four strong primarily full time staff to help behind the counter (Dan, Ed, Keith and Matt), I ll finally be free to start some serious teaching again! Keith and Matt will oversee the junior program this year, so please contact them if you are interested in junior lessons and all things junior. Please be aware that weekend tee times will begin Saturday, March 7th, ending the winter weekend shotguns (but apparently not the winter itself). Tee times will continue to be able to booked online for weekdays (one week in advance) the lottery system will also remain the same, signing up for the weekends through the lottery online request and with manual slips in the shop. We will however be asking that the slips or online requests have ALL NAMES of each INDIVIDUAL player in the group or your we will not be able to honor your request. If you have a guest the guest s name will also have to be entered. This will put some added pressure on those that request more than a couple times, but with a 20% no show rate last year with those who sign up with multiple tee times, we cannot afford to continue without asking for a more firm commitment from our members. We believe this is simply enforcing a policy that we have been lax with the past seasons. While we are on the topic of guest play, why not INVITE your guest to Explore Membership Opportunities at your club. Our membership director, Cliff Burdette, will be ecstatic to schedule a visit with you and your guest. As always, and especially in this transition, thank you for your support! The golf shop. The web site calendar has been updated for all golf events, I would invite all of you to review the calendar to make sure your events are scheduled properly. A few of you have already indicated a couple of changes that needed to made, thanks for taking the time to check things out. As previously mentioned please have your associations indicate to the handicap representatives which tournaments are unpostable scores or posted as tournament scores. As you know March 15th is the opening of handicap season, so all scores on that date going forward will be postable at the club.

7 M ONTGO ME RY COUNTRY CLUB T EE TIME S NE WSLETTE R P AGE 7 HANDICAP COMMITTEE MESSAGE Spring Cleaning... Greetings from chilly South Carolina. Is it my imagination or was January really warmer than February? Never mind, spring will be here soon enough. And everyone knows in the spring a young man s fantasy turns lightly to thoughts of love. Really, love? Only if we re talking love of golf. Maybe that s just us old men who turn to golf. Well anyway, with the season rapidly approaching let s review a few of the basics. Firstly, what is the golf season? Well, here in Maryland it means we have to post scores for any rounds played between March 15 and November 15 of each year. Of course, if we play outside the state we may have to post the score depending on the season for the state where we play. Here in South Carolina the season is year round. So, even though the temperature was 39 when I teed off this morning, I have to post the round. If it makes you feel any better I didn t play that well anyway. Secondly, what is a postable round. Basically, if you play your own ball all the way around the golf course it s a postable round. That includes four ball (better ball) competitions as well as match play competitions. Foursomes (alternate shot), no. Captains Choice (scramble), unh unh. Stableford, certainly, as long as it s on your ball. Hey if you re not sure ask the pro shop or any member of the handicap committee. And why you ask am I using the old English terms for the competitions? Well, I m dreaming of playing for Davis Love III on the 2016 Ryder cup team. Don t laugh, you too have dreams that will never come true. And, lastly for this month, the USGA Handicap System requires every golfer to attempt to make the best possible score on every hole played. So, if you close out your matches on the 16th hole and tank the last 2 to pad your handicap, you are not playing by the rules. Eventually, no one will want to play with you and you will become a lonely old golfer playing by yourself in the late afternoon. More next month. In the meantime, have a great 2015 golf season. Fair handicaps make the game enjoyable for everyone. Fair handicaps make the game enjoyable for everyone. Handicap Committee: Sharon Sparks, Chair Greg Baeten, PGA Professional Bob Carbo Mary-ellen Derry Tim Derry Gerald Ford Chris Jordan Chip Mace Joan Savage Angie Yoo Well, what if your round is interrupted? If you finished 7 holes you post a nine hole score. If you finished 13 holes you post an 18 hole score. So what about those holes you didn t finish? Simple, just take par and add any handicap strokes you are entitled to. That s your score for that hole. OK, if you re confused, the proshop staff will help.

9 M ONTGO ME RY COUNTRY CLUB T EE TIME S NE WSLETTE R P AGE 9 W G A N O T E S : W O M E N S G O L F A S S O C I A T I O N Is it Spring yet? I know we have all had enough of the snow and cold weather and are ready for warmer days. We are all looking forward to a great golf season. If you were fortunate enough to play golf in some warmer climates, the pro shop will assist you in posting any scores you may have. Speaking of which, the start of the season is quickly approaching. If you are new to the club (or new to golf) and have not yet signed up for the WGA, please do so as soon as possible. Please be sure to also sign up for a handicap, which is crucial if you want to play in tournaments both at MCC and outside the club. Handicap posting for rounds at MCC (and other courses in the area) begins March 15. More information can be obtained from the Professional Staff. There are two dates to keep in mind. First, our Spring meeting will take place on Saturday, March 14 at 10:00 am in the Ballroom. Refreshments will be served. If you are interested in becoming a member of the WGA, please join us for an informational meeting. If the snow has melted by then, we will be reserving a group of tee times following the meeting for anyone who would like to play. More information will be forthcoming. Second, our Opening Day tournament will take place on Saturday, March 28 with tee times starting at 10:00 am. The format will be a Scramble. Following the tournament, there will be light hors d oeuvres. As always, information on meetings and tournaments will be posted on the bulletin board in the Ladies Locker Room. Happy Birthday in March to the following members: Dale Cutright (3/3), Kristin Shifflett (3/7), Theresa Park (3/10), Michelle Zygielbaum (3/14), Margaret Chasson (3/16), Sylvia Sierra (3/18), and Nell Neal (3/27). As I am writing this we are receiving another couple of inches of snow and there are still some cold temperatures in the forecast to come. On the upside though the days are getting longer which will bring the warmer weather before we know it. Just because we are stuck indoors there are numerous projects that still get addressed. Over the past couple of weeks when we were not shoveling snow we were doing our normal yearly servicing to the golf carts, rebuilding and sharpening the reels on the mowers and getting the benches refurbished that are placed at the tee stations. We also are always looking at ways to partner with the members who like to be involved to improve Montgomery CC each year. Over the past couple of months my meetings with the Green Committee have been very productive and also educational. The Green Committee consists of myself, our head Golf Professional Greg Beaten, Clark Kunkle Green Committee Chair, Gary Rivers, Bill Balster, Mike Althouse and Brian Ault who if anybody does not know is a golf course designer. The Committee has been going through the Golf Course Standards for Montgomery section by section and adding things that hopefully will improve our memberships experience at the club. A few things that we will be doing differently this year will be painting the cups on weekends from April through October, removing the broken tee boxes on the tees so remember to pick those broken tees, improving ball mark repair, placing the bunker rakes inside the bunker parallel to the hole and allowing cart traffic on the fairway on hole 12. I also update them on current projects or concerns that I have so they can also update the membership when asked questions. The Green Committee meets the first Thursday of every month so if you ever have any questions please feel free to contact them so it can be discussed. Also please visit my blog to see pictures of course projects and any updates with what we are doing at the club. In closing please remember to fix your ball marks and one other, replace your divots, rake the bunkers after you have entered them and place the rake in the bunker parallel with how the hole is being played.
