Dear Valued Members, First off, THANK YOU all for the warm welcome you have provided me as I begin this wonderful new journey in my life at Montgomery Country Club. The passion, excitement and involvement you all have for the club is refreshing and I am looking forward to learning from you all on a daily basis. About Me:: I was born and raised in Long Island, New York and graduated from Cortland State University with a degree in Fine Arts. Growing up I had a love for the game of golf, working as a caddie at the Huntington Crescent Club & the famed Bethpage State Park (Black Course). Upon graduation I moved to Cary, North Carolina with my future bride to pursue my golf career and landed at Lochmere Golf Club as an Assistant Professional. After 4 years this is also where I had my first Head Professional position as well. In 2012, I accepted the Director of Golf role at Hartefeld National Golf Club in Avondale, PA. It is with great excitement that I have now moved to Germantown, MD with my lovely wife Lyndsay and our best pal, Parmel the Dog (funny golf story about his name next time we chat). My Mission & Goals: I have been asked many question upon my arrival from, what are your plans? & what are you going to change? My mission is to identify our club and what makes us special. No two clubs are alike, the same as no two people are alike, and so I am working hard as I speak with each and every one of you to learn about MCC. Once I am able to do that, my goal is to do what we do to the best of our ability. I have challenged my staff and myself to figure out the question that in my mind will answer all the future questions Who are we as a club? When we can answer that question, all the new and exciting future ideas will have a direction for us all to move towards. I hope you have begun to see small changes as we begin to improve on what we already do. I look forward to hearing all of your feedback, whether it is positive or negative. Your valued input will be the stepping stones for us all as we grow together! Communication: Continued improvement to our communication with the Membership is a key to our success. The MCC staff will be thinking of new and creative ways to communicate in an effort to reach everyone. We all accept information differently and we want to make sure you are all connected to your club. Here is a list of the avenues we use to convey club activity: , Website ( & Website Calendar, Monthly Newsletter, Hard Copy Flyers in Professional Shop, the front entrance & various spots in clubhouse, Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, Blogspot), Scrolling Televisions located in lobby and soon to the Professional Shop, Cart Plaques in your golf carts Banner Ups (new to MCC.Large scroll type free standing banners) Table tents on your dining table & menus WORD OF MOUTH. The most important of all. Please engage the staff and talk about upcoming activities) Again, THANK YOU all for the welcome you have given to me and I am looking forward to building a relationship with you all! My door is always open and I look forward to seeing you all at the club soon! Cheers, Frank LaVacca PGA General Manager flavacca@montgomerycc.com

3 M ONTGO ME RY COUNTRY CLUB T EE TIME S NE WSLETTE R P AGE 3 It is amazing how quickly conditions can change in the Mid-Atlantic. After 3 months of only 2.5 inches of rain our worries are over now. Just last week we started to pump the pond down to the left of the first hole to aid in filling the irrigation pond. Now after 2.25 inches of rain that fell on Tuesday September 29 th the ponds are full again. Since receiving the rain we are in full mode getting areas seeded with tall fescue in the rough and perennial ryegrass in the fairways. Always introducing better varieties of grass is always a win win. We also are getting the hard compacted areas from cart traffic aerified and the fairways sliced to allow for some relief. Also on the to do list is getting the tees aerified and adding amendments where needed. Fall is always a great time of the year for golf but also very busy for us doing the necessary cultural practices to make the golf course better for next year. Also don t forget the famous Hayride with Farmer Phil on Tuesday October 27 th. As a reminder the Green Committee meets the first Thursday of every month so if you ever have any questions please feel free to contact them so it can be discussed. Also please visit my blog to see pictures of course projects and any updates with what we are doing at the club. WGA 2-LADY: 1 ST P L A CE NET, JUA NITA TRYO N A ND TEE NA LEE In closing please remember to fix your ball marks and one other, replace your divots, rake the bunkers after you have entered them and place the rake in the bunker parallel with how the hole is being played. 6 M ONTGO ME RY COUNTRY CLUB T EE TIME S NE WSLETTE R P AGE 6 Our 2015 Member Guest concluded with a great flourish, Mark McKenna and his son Brian won the playoff to become the overall winners! Congratulations to all who played and to what many say is the first Father/Son duo to win the Member Guest! The WGA Solheim Cup continued its tradition of a competitive and friendly event, but mostly lots of fun golf! Thanks to all the women who took the time to set up the matches and for taking the time to decorate themselves and their carts!! Well done ladies!! As Fall arrives you ll find more outerwear arriving including a large supply of FootJoy merchandise with more Under Armour to follow shortly. We will be looking for a supply of Winter hats, including mitts, gloves and hats with Winter just around the corner! (Sorry can t be ignored!). The Super Seniors is nearing its conclusion, so by month s end all club champions will be decided. Fall, as most of you already know, is a great time for more golf, so don t put your clubs away, there s still lots of golf on the horizon! Please make sure to adjust your schedules for the shorter daylight starting November 1st. Tee times will start later and end earlier, the range will close earlier due to darkness, and tee times on the nice weekends will be at a premium. Please be patient, this time of year, there are the same amount of tee times requests for what amounts to less times available (due to shorter daylight). With the good Fall weather and plenty of openings on Mondays this October, how about asking your friends, business associates and others who haven t played here in a while to come out? Check with Greg in the golf shop, he ll come up with a special rate for MONDAY play only, so you can entertain your guests and save some money too! Lots of end of year outings yet to play: Ladies member guest on Friday Oct. 9th, Men s MGA Cup Saturday and Sunday Oct th, SMGA Ryder Cup Tuesday October 13th, MGA closing day on Sunday October 25th, and the WGA Closing Day on Sunday October 31st to mention a few! The final event of the year is closing day and it is Sunday, October 25. Sign up is available on line and in the Men s Locker room. 14 M ONTGO ME RY COUNTRY CLUB T EE TIME S NE WSLETTE R P AGE 14 The 2015 championship for the nine holers was a tworound stroke play tournament on September 10 and 17. Freda Chase won the gross and Pam Conti won the net. Additionally, on September 24, the 9 holers went on their annual Mystery Golf excursion. This year 19 women went to Worthington Manor Golf Club in Frederick, Maryland, for 18 holes of golf followed by lunch.

15 M ONTGO ME RY COUNTRY CLUB T EE TIME S NE WSLETTE R P AGE 15 P o st Yo u r S c o r e s My buddy caught me at the grill yesterday and asked me If I haven t scored less than 85 all year long, how can my handicap be 11? Through my haze I responded, Well, did you post all those scores? Maybe you re handicap record includes penalty scores posted by the committee. Yeah, that s right! I looked at your record and it does. What? he sputtered, How can you look at my record? That s private! It s none of your business. Now he was killing my buzz so I said Oh contraire my hairy friend. Anybody with a handicap can review your record. It s called Peer Review and it s right there in the USGA handicap rules. You can read the rules on the USGA web site, or you can buy and read the manual like I did. I m supposed to look at your record and you re supposed to look at mine. That s one way we can all ensure that handicaps are fair. You bought the manual, and you really read it? What a sad life you lead. Maybe so rotund one, but that s not how you got the penalty scores. Fact is the Handicap Committee compares your postings to the tee sheets every week. If your name is on the tee sheet and you haven t posted a score we have to post a penalty. In most cases the penalty score will be the lowest score in your last 20. So, when does the handicap committee check? he asked as I watched the anger rising in his face. I post all of my scores, but sometimes I can t post right away. You know, I actually have a life. I have places to go and people to see. And what if there s a mistake on the tee sheet? One, you can post on your cell phone, your tablet or your laptop. Yeah, yeah, I know you told me already, they re all company issue and the company frowns on loading apps. Break out your dusty wallet and get your own cell phone. Two, when you got around to actually posting those scores you probably used the wrong date. If you don t put in the date you actually played how can we match the tee sheet? Are we supposed to root around like pigs sniffing for truffles to find your scores? Three, if you think there is a mistake you need to tell the committee. us the explanation and we will fix it. One, you used the pig reference, not me he snickered. Two, I only play for fun, what difference does it make. Wrong my misguided one. You play in the tournaments, and you keep beating me out of quarters. It s not fair to me or anybody else if your handicap isn t right. Likewise, it s not fair to us if somebody else is sandbagging. It d be nice if everybody posted all of their scores and posted correctly, but we re dealing with humans here. Mistakes happen, and let s face it some people do cheat. The best way to prevent that is Peer Review. The second best is for the committee to check everyone s scores. Fair handicaps make the game enjoyable for everyone.
