2 The Good, The Bad, and the many Acknowledgements Generally we have had a good year of curling. CURLING REPORT The Chicken Chef Play Downs was likely the highlight of the year. 5 Team s from this play down went on to the Provincial Play downs for the Mixed Curling Championship. The Last day consisted of 10 teams curling for 5 spots in the provincial plays downs and it was great curling, with good crowds. The Galaxy Ken Kurbis Bonspiel was also very successful, 28 teams competed with the Scott Madams team winning the bonspiel. We had 5 schools (Over 200 students) participate in various curling program. These program included 2 learn to curl sessions run by Rossmere Volunteers. All year we have had many compliments about the ice conditions. Curler in the Mixed Play Downs were very please with the conditions and I heard a number of people during the MCA bonspiel describe the ice conditions as the best that they had played on during the MCA. The Monday & Wednesday Ladies (Lassies) leagues are full with a waiting list. The Friday Night Mixed league is also full with a waiting list. The Friday Morning Master league is also full. We switched one small Saturday League to Sunday this year and that allowed Garth the opportunity to do some proactive work on the ice. It also allowed us to sell some ice time and Banquets for company events. We have been fairly successful selling advertising signs for the curling rink. From a club point of view this revenue certainly helps the club. From a business point of view I do think that this is money well spent. If anyone is interested we still have spots for 5 more Advertising signs. We have a number of Rossmere Members, who have been, and are willing to, put on learn to curl lesson. These sessions can be done in groups and or one on one personal session s. If you are at all interest in learning to curl simple call Scott Parker or Lyle Atkins. We had a family rent Ice one Saturday Morning so that their friends from Australia could come out and try curling. Lots of fun for the 2 families and people watching. After Christmas the Monday night men s league picked up a new team made up of Steve Crampton and Jeremy Krueger. Well know for their golf prowess but curling? Curling for the first time, skipping the team, Steve make nice take out and a draw to the 4 foot to score 5 on the first end. They won the game. I won t mention who they were playing against. Since then they have won more than they have lost. The Bad (or the not so good): The Tuesday / Thursday night men s league was badly hurt with the return of the Jets. We are now short 4 teams on Tuesday and 3 Teams on Thursday. We also have opening for Women Curlers on Wednesday morning and afternoon. We have some major recruiting to do over the summer. If you are interested, or know anyone who is interested in curling please let Scott Parker, Lyle Atkins or Tom Jackson know as soon as possible. One of the problem s with curling it is sometimes hard to find 3 other people to curl with. Last fall I had a number of individuals who wanted to curl but they couldn t find a team. So, if you are interested in curling, give us a call and we will see what we can do to build a team. Also let us know if you are a 5 th player on a team but would be willing form a new team. Last fall we didn t realize that the Jets were going to cause a problem and we didn t have time to react. We don t want that to happen again. 4 GOLF PROFESSIONAL REPORT In an effort to provide our members with a better experience on the golf course for the 2012 season. The golf shop will be re introducing the starter/marshal program. With the golf season fast approaching we would like to explain our new Pace of Play program. Expected Pace of Play is 4 hours and 20 minutes. The expected pace of play per hole is 14 minutes. If your group has fallen out of position you will be notified by the Course Assistant. If still out of position, your group will be notified that improvement must be made or your group will be moved into position. If improvement has not been made your group will be moved into position by the Course Assistant. If pace play continues to be an issue with member groups, the golf shop will notify the Course Captain. At which time, the Board of Directors will notify offending groups about future course of actions. Play Ready Golf... Some tips to play Ready Golf Play the right set of tees Players should not travel as a pack. Each player of the group should walk directly to his/her own ball. Begin reading the greens and lining up putt s as soon as you reach the green. Don t wait until it s your turn to putt to start reading the green. On the tee, pay attention to your partners drives. If they lose sight of their ball, you can help direct them to it and avoid any searching. When waiting on the tee for the group in front to clear the fairway, don t be so strict about order of play. Let the shorter hitter-who can t reach the group in front anyway- go ahead and hit. Limit practice strokes to one or two at the most. Do not bother marking lag putts-go ahead and putt out if it s short enough and you won t be trampling on another players line. Do not measure your speed by the group behind you. If you feel that you are holding up the group behind you, step aside and wave them up. Golf courses that offer an enjoyable pace of play can afford to provide a better product (course conditions) and a higher level of service (customer service).
