Let me say thanks to all of our official sponsors. I and the entire association greatly appreciate your support. We just had our yearly golf tournament and it was a good one! We had a great turn-out and the good Lord supplied decent weather, what more could we ask for. I would like to sincerely thank all of our sponsors and golfers. A special thanks to Jon Woodall and his golf committee for a job well done. Now we are off to Tallahassee on April 1 st & 2nd to battle the forces of evil, our government. We have the UUCF Board meeting as well as scheduled meetings with our legislators. Please try to attend, if at all possible. It is a very eye opening experience and we need all the help we can get to accomplish our legislative goals for bettering our industry. That s all for now. 5 GOLF TOURNAMENT RESULTS We had a beautiful day for our golf tournament on Monday, March 18th at St. Johns Golf & Country Club. This was our first year at St. Johns and everyone seems to have a great day. The course was in great shape, the beer was flowing and the sun was shining. Golfers enjoyed a hot sandwich buffet before a 1:00 shotgun start. New this year too was our Putting Contest which took place before the tournament. For a $5 fee, golfers were given an opportunity to make the finals and putt for $1,000 cash. Unfortunately, no one won the big bucks but Jimmy Bannon, John Woody, Inc. was the winner of the contest. He received a Nike golf bag, $1,000 cash and a plaque. Immediately following the golf tournament, an awards ceremony was held. 8 Scholarship Deadline Approaching! NUCA offers four scholarships each year to those who fit the criteria and are selected based on merit. The scholarship application describes the scholarships, criteria and deadline. Awardees will be announced in late June. Each year, NUCA raises money through a benefit event at the annual convention and through donations to the scholarship program for these scholarships. Deadline for scholarship applications is May 24th. Click here for application Washington Summit Registration Now Open The 2013 Washington Summit will be held at the Crowne Plaza Old Town Alexandria. Please register for the Summit and book your accommodations soon. Spring is a very busy time of year in the nation s capitol area, and the hotel where many of the events will take place will likely sell out. The registration fee is $245 for NUCA members, $395 for non-members, and $145 for non-industry spouses and guests. You must be registered to attend any and all Summit events. The fee helps to defray the costs of NUCA s unrivaled Federal Issues Conference all day Tuesday, transportation to Capitol Hill Wednesday and six food and beverage functions including breakfast each day, Tuesday s Annual Awards Luncheon, and Receptions Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. 9 SAFETY NEWS By Jeff Blomgren, Chairman, NUCA Safety Committee NUCA Master Trainers Classes Go to NUCA.com to find out how to become a master trainer for Competent Person and Confined space. Classes are forming now and will continue to be scheduled thorough the year as demand dictates. You can be an even more valuable asset to your company and the industry by becoming one of the premier safety trainers of NUCA. Heads up We have time yet but don t forget that the new mandated GHS (Global Harmonization System) has become law. This is the new version of the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) and the Right to Know, hazardous materials education system. All employees affected by this law have to be trained concerning the new labels and safety data sheets by December 1, The updated MSDS sheets must be in place by June 1, That sounds like a lot of time but it s time to start looking at it and planning for it. 10 JEA As Built Meeting We had a very productive breakfast meeting with JEA last month at the University Center at the University of North Florida. Approximately, 25 members were in attendance. Pete Hallock was the main speaker. Also on hand was Gary Foster who workers in JEA Plan and As built Review. 11 Can you top this story? By Jeff Blomgren, Petticoat-Schmitt Civil Contractors On Friday March 8, I was visiting one of our jobsites, a DOT job along a very busy stretch of highway in St. Augustine, FL. Highway speed along this stretch is 55 mph. All our MOT was up and the jobsite was in compliance. Our superintendent was on site as well as our DOT inspector. I was leaving the jobsite after checking on crews and decided to stop at the porta-potty at the end of our jobsite. I pulled off the road and behind our MOT barrels and was in the porta-potty when I heard a loud crash followed by barrels bouncing on the roadway and another crash and another crash. I opened to door to see dust and parts strewn all over the roadway and one car still smoking with all the airbags deployed, another small pick-up truck in the culvert with an elderly lady in it and the front drivers side of my car demolished. The lady in the car on the roadway was getting out of her car and saying Oh my God over and over. The lady in the truck seemed to be OK and was waving out the window. I called 911 and talked to the dispatcher and was still on the phone when the police and fire rescue arrived. All three cars were non drivable and two were totaled. Get this, no one was hurt and no one went to the hospital. The trooper asked if I called 911 and I said yes and then he asked me what happened. When I told him I didn t know because I was in the porta-potty he started to laugh. It was pretty funny. I told him I heard the crashes and opened the door to find destruction everywhere. All during the subsequent investigation the folks involved were really amused at my situation. In fact you might say that since no one was hurt the whole thing was entertaining for them. I went around and talked to all of them to see if they were OK and they all asked if I was the one in the porta-potty, with a smile. I said yes, that was me. This is what I understand happened. The lady in the pickup truck (1987 S-10) made a U turn in front of an oncoming car (small 2000 Toyota). The Toyota hit the S-10 at about 55 miles an hour projecting the S-10 into my vehicle parked near the porta-potty and then her vehicle continued on into the ditch about 25 yards from my vehicle. The Toyota was still in the travel lane of the highway. When we did the investigation, we found that my vehicle was parked in the exact spot needed to keep the S-10 from hitting the porta-potty at whatever speed the vehicle was going. I would assume that it would be somewhere near 50mph. That would have effectively destroyed the porta-potty and me. Not only that, who would want to open the door on a porta-potty laying junked 50 feet from the accident site? Who would want to load me up and carry me away after that? I guess what I m getting at is that we can be completely in the right and still be in the wrong place at the wrong time and only chance keeps us from becoming a statistic. I prefer to feel that divine intervention is real. In the end, everyone walked away from this with no harm done to anyone. Life is a game of inches. 11
