Peter Baker hosted Trivia night highlighting Finland in the questions. The winning table members each won the latest Rotary Badge. Thanks to Jane Carbone for providing dessert with a Finnish and international touch. 3 Speaker for the day August 18th - : Don Cox PDG Rotary Club of Broadmeadows Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Essendon Inc. Don Cox PDG Rotary Club of Broadmeadows and an ambassador for the new Rotary Global Rewards Program. Don talked about his experience at the Sao Paulo Brazil Rotary International convention which was held in June this year and showed a slid show of photos. His highlight was the Rotary Flame from India celebrating polio free for a year. Africa is also a success story on eradicating Polio Rotary international convention Seoul Korea. Member resignations The following members have resigned since the beginning of July 2015 the club has received & accepted the following resignations: Graeme Wood, Eileen Ray, Ian Thomas, Glenda Lapsley and Simon Cookson. Simon Cookson was inducted into the Rotary Club of Essendon on 13 th. May During his time in the club he has been a great supporter of our International committee, serving from 2008/9 till 2012/13 the last two years as Chairman. He then moved to the community committee of which he was chair in 2013/14. Simon s dedication to his committee work was unparalleled. He travelled to Myanmar six times, with Roma and when he moved to Community he was instrumental in the work leading to the completion of the Strathmore Men s shed. He served on our board for three years and all who served with him were refreshed by his enthusiasm and no nonsense approach. He was awarded the trifecta of Royce Abbey Award, Rotarian of the Year, and Paul Harris Recognition. His presence around the club will be sorely missed. (written by Dr Peter Baker) Graeme Wood was inducted into the Rotary Club of Essendon on 2/7/1985. In the late 80 s and early 90 s the Rotary Club of Essendon conducted weekly bingo sessions on Friday evenings at the Moonee Ponds town hall. For almost three years Graeme served as one of the bingo officers and also assisted with personal funds to establish some of the bingo sessions. The proceeds were used to purchase a bus for Camp Quality. In 1989 Graeme was a very active member of our first auction night and again personal funds as well as hard work were Graeme s input to a successful function. In 1993/4 Graeme served as club treasurer. Along the way he also reduced the many working accounts into a better system still used today. It was a demanding year for the treasurer as we felt the effects of the downfall of the Pyramid Building Society. In a first for the club Graeme also redirected the closure of the financial books to June from the previous system of May closure. He has always been a soft touch when anyone came calling for some bottles of wine for an International dinner or a pair of spectacles for an auction night, even the Brumby babes have called on his generosity. We are sorry to see Graeme go, and wish him and Josie every success and happiness for the future. Mens Shed The Men s Shed at Mascoma St Strathmore will open at 10am Saturday 29 August 2015 for our first information session for the public. Our members Lisa Lowcock, Alistair Fraser, Lino Airo-Farulla and Karyn Clarke have volunteered their services to assist on the day. We at Essendon Rotary are also responsible for the BBQ and we need some more helpers. Please contact Alistair ( ) if you can assist cook a good snag!! A formal application has been lodged with Moonee Valley Council for a Grant to assist with funding The Great

4 Moonee Valley Discovery which we hope to run in March The Grant application process is quite exacting. President Peter has thanked Alistair Fraser for preparing our submission and we hope for the right outcome. Strathmore Mens Shed (SMS) will have its first open session at 10am, Saturday 29/8/2015 and we need volunteers to assist on this day and into the future. SMS will be run on a day to day basis by 3 Rotary Clubs: Essendon, Essendon North and Strathmore. Moonee Valley Council will provide support as required. We currently have more than 80 people who have indicated that they wish to use the SMS and we expect a large turn-out on the 29 th so we need your help to ensure this day is successful. This would involve managing the enrolment procedures, but not matters related to handling tools or machinery. After this day we require volunteers to assist with running the hands-on sessions and this will involve tools and machinery. Lino Airo-Farulla has already volunteered and we are seeking more members, or friends of members, who might enjoy being more closely involved with this significant Rotary community project. A Year Without Polio in Africa Today, we mark a tremendous milestone: one full year without a single case of polio caused by wild poliovirus in Africa. A polio-free Africa has been within sight for over a decade. Health workers, community leaders, government officials and global partners helped reach 230 million African children with the polio vaccine, often under some of the most difficult conditions imaginable. Together, we have done what once seemed impossible: we have stopped polio in Africa. Africa s last polio case occurred in Somalia on 11 August last year. Nigeria, one of the last three polio-endemic countries, reached one year without a reported case on 24 July. The World Health Organization (WHO) may soon remove Nigeria from the list of polio-endemic countries. When Africa goes three years without a case of polio, WHO will certify the region as polio-free. Yet this progress, momentous as it is, is still fragile. As long as polio exists in the two remaining endemic countries of Pakistan and Afghanistan, the virus still has the potential to spread and to spark new outbreaks. Now, more than ever, we need the support of donors, governments and partners to carry us through to the end: not just a polio-free Africa, but a polio-free world.
