2 THIS WAS THE CHRISTMAS PARTY WE HAD TO HAVE!
3 KENYA TEAM SORTS OUT THE POMS! The Kenya Homeless World Cup Team and RCE International Committee enjoy a moment and a BBQ at Woodlands Park on Monday night this week. The Kenya Homeless World Cup Soccer Team came 5 th out of 56 Countries competing for glory. Overall Kenya only lost 2 games in the tournament.in the first round Kenya defeated Germany 12-2, Greece 8-0, Chile 8-3, and South Africa 5-3. The 2 nd round Kenya had it s first loss to Brazil 4-10, then defeated Hong Kong 9-3 and defeated Portugal in a penalty shoot out. The third round saw Kenya defeat Norway 10-1, and Hungary Fourth Round Kenya lost to Afghanistan 5-10, then went on to defeat Ukraine 6-5. In the final playoff match Kenya defeated England 7-4 for 5 th Place in the World Cup overall. Afghanistan who defeated Kenya went on to win the tournament. Kenya is a very talented team and RCE had the pleasure of looking after them for the weekof the World Cup. Kenya has improved its ranking in the World Series from 6 th to now 5 th. A big thank you to Cathy Nicou, Shirley Kukk for gathering clothing for all the Kenyan team to take home and to Qantas for help with excess luggage! We mustn t forget Bill Dagg who is always helping us at DIK. We were able to send all the members of the team home with a big bag of clothing each as well as a pram, clothing and toys for Elijah, whose wife gave birth to a baby while he was here playing soccer, we told him that baby had to be named Ozzie. Dimatina s restaurant in Lygon Street, supported us during the week with two discounted meals as we feed the Kenyans each night. Michael Mahoney and George who works for Michael, Glenn Smith, Alf Puglia (chief BBQ chef) are amongst some of the Rotarians that helped us make a lasting impression on the Kenyan Team. Justin McEvoy and his team at PhysioHealth gave each player a Physio session to relieve some of the stress and tension from the games (and probably life in Kenya!) as they had never been to a Physio before. We were able to take them travelling around the City looking at the sights, some new and very interesting experiences, travelling over the Bolte Bridge and then into the Burnley Tunnel-under the water! Phew said John, one of the team, that was scary as Tom my son drove out the other side. Looking down at the street from the top of Eureka Tower, what an experience! And the security alert when a group of young fans surrounded them as we all walked around Eureka Tower and started chanting.they were absolutely amazed by the Australian hospitality and generosity. A visit to St Therese s primary school on Friday, the team had a skills session with the students and a practice session before the afternoon game. Friday night they went Ten Pin Bowling, George, Michael Mahoney s work colleague, took them to the Keilor Park soccer club on Saturday morning, Thank you to all of you that made their visit so special, and a big thanks to my children, Madeleine and Tom for driving them every where and to David my son, for all the time he spent showing them around the city and talking to them. My daughter Josephine and Cathy, my wife, for all meals as well as clothes unpacked folded and re-packed. Job well done. Matt O'Brien Rotary Club Essendon The RCE congratulates Matt on a fantastic effort he has made to make the Homeless Kenya World Cup team feel welcome and part of the Rotary Club of Essendon, Well done.
