1 President: Grant Sheldon Editorial Executive: Stephen Roe Volume 78 Issue 30 Tuesday 19 th February 2013 A reminder that next week s meeting will be held at Nobel Greek Restaurant, 328 Keilor Rd Niddrie, 1-2pm, with car parking available in Ross St, Dudley St or the Wallis Mall Car Park off Hotham Road & Carrington Street. This Week s Meeting: President Grant opened the meeting by presenting Lisa Lowcock with her graduation certificate from the Rotary Leadership Institute. Peter Halaseh has accepted his nomination as our Club s next participant. Well done to Lisa and Peter! In appreciation of our Club s long-standing custom, the management team at Fredricks has provided President Grant with a $100 voucher for the Club and will shout a free drink to members who attain the milestones of 10, 20, 30 etc. years of Rotary service. A very nice gesture indeed. Almoner John Chadderton passed on the sad news of the passing of Mandy Gilbert after a long illness. The thoughts of all members are with John, Alexander and Thomas Gilbert at this difficult time. (Please see Page 4 of this issue for more details). Stand-in Sergeant, Richard Lawrence, then regaled us with a few husband and wife tales, although he assured us that none were from personal experience! Our guest speaker, author and historian Gillian Hibbins, told us of the origins of Australian Rules Football which harks back to ancient Greek and Roman times. Football, in its earliest manifestation, was played in England in the 12 th century. It took two forms games hosted by publicans with the aim of boosting liquor sales through postmatch celebrations, and games between Public Schools such as Eton, Winchester, Radley and Harrow. In 1815, Eton College documented its football rules, the first football code to be written down anywhere in the world. The first recorded game of Australian Football was held at Castlemaine in 1855 with 12 players per side. The game ended after three hours with a burst football and neither side having registered a score. Interest in football games had grown due to the influx of British immigrants to the goldfields. Early suburban games were held between cricket seasons with the stated aim of preventing the joints from being covered in useless, superfluous flesh. Melbourne Grammar competed against St. Kilda Grammar and Scotch College, with a St Kilda game in 1858 abandoned after 1½ hours play, the score nil all, when the players resorted to fisticuffs. Apart from video evidence, not much has changed! The games were conducted using English rugby rules, modified through discussion, compromise and experimentation. A game at Richmond Paddock in 1866

2 In 1859 a committee of seven men (six of whom were active members of the Melbourne Cricket Club) was elected to draw up the official rules governing this new sport. The committee met at the Parade Hotel in Wellington Parade and a copy of the ten simple rules resulting from their deliberations adorns the walls adjacent to the escalators in the new northern stand at the MCG. The first football club formed was the Melbourne Football Club in This was quickly followed by Geelong, which formed in 1859, although not without controversy as the new team insisted on playing by its own set of rules. It was some time before common sense prevailed and the Pivotonians agreed to abide by competition rules. The original balls were made from a pig s bladder into which was inserted a china pipe to allow inflation. Leather strips were then sewn onto the bladder, although early production techniques ensured that no two balls were ever the same shape. As the new game originated in Melbourne it was first known as Melbourne Rules Football, then, as it spread throughout the country, this changed to Victorian Rules Football and finally Australian Rules Football. The first intercolonial match was held between Victoria and South Australia in The Melbourne Football team in 1902 By Federation in 1901, the game was the main winter sport in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania with separate leagues being set up in the first three states. It was also played in New South Wales and Queensland but ranked second in popularity to rugby union. The game has come full circle with the advent of an international series between Australia and Ireland using a set of hybrid rules from both Australian and Gaelic Football Geelong player, Jim McShane, 1895 Melbourne vs. Geelong 1880 Fred Baring, Essendon, 1920s President Grant s thought for the day: A synonym for success is mediocrity.

Not only was John and Mandy's relationship extremely close, but the vivacious and very capable Mandy also played a vital role in the creation of their very successful business. The President and all members of the Club send their condolences and offer every support to John and his family at this very sad time. (Mandy s funeral will be held at St. John s Uniting Church at 11.30am, Friday 22 nd February followed by a light lunch. A private burial will be conducted at Ballarat). We also mourn the passing last week after a long illness of the outstanding transplant surgeon, Professor Don Esmore. Don was the son of past member Lionel Esmore and Vida. Don was made a Paul Harris Fellow by our Club for his excellence in the field. The many newspaper tributes paint a picture of an outstanding professional; internationally recognised, inspirational, energetic, compassionate, witty, a lover of fast cars, and a close friend of many. 5 Lunch on a Liner.. Last Wednesday a group of almost 40 enjoyed a fund-raising tour and lunch aboard a visiting cruise ship. The height of the ship also afforded some memorable views of Melbourne. Registered in the Bahamas, the Rhapsody of the Seas celebrated her maiden voyage in 1997 and has sailed to Australia for the summer season since It carries 2400 passengers and a crew of 765 and underwent a US$54 million refit in Onboard amenities include a full-service spa, two swimming pools, a poolside, outdoor movie screen, a massive theatre, a casino, six bars, a pizzeria, an ice-cream parlor, flat-screen TVs in every cabin, Wi-Fi throughout the ship and touch screens to help you navigate the ship s 11 decks. There are several dining options including the Japanese restaurant Izumi, Chops Grille Steakhouse, the Italian trattoria Giovanni's Table and an exclusive private dining room called Chef's Table. A seven-storey atrium doubles as a vertical theatre for aerial acrobatics performances, with large LED panels that run the length of the two elevators providing the accompanying light show. The on-board luncheon and tour was donated courtesy of Anne Rogers travel connections and an impressive $3200 was raised for Club projects as a result. Well done to Anne for her organisation of such an enjoyable and successful day. For more information about the ship please visit: H&br=R&wuc=AUS

7 Philippines Delegation. The current excursion to Bahay Tuluyan is progressing well with Cathy and Nick Nicou and Michael Portelli on hand to assist. Shirley Kukk and several others will join the group shortly. The guest house is reported as being very comfortable and Cathy is busy writing up an operations manual for the new cafe. The Club will be sending a shipment of goods to the Philippines in March. Donations of towels, sheets, new pillows, children s books, school shoes, stationery and toys suitable for children of kindergarten age would be greatly appreciated. These and any other items can be given to Shirley or Cathy on their return or they can pick them up from your premises. We all wish the travelling party a safe journey and a rewarding and successful delegation. Club Banners One of the more colorful traditions of Rotary is the exchange of club banners. Rotarians traveling to distant locations often take banners to exchange at make-up meetings as a token of friendship. Many clubs use the decorative banners they have received for attractive displays at club meetings and district events. By 1959, exchanging banners had become so popular that the RI Board of Directors was concerned the practice would become a financial burden on clubs. It urged Rotarians to exercise discretion, moderation, and measured judgment in making provision for such exchanges. Approximately 20,000 banners are housed in the Rotary History and Archives collection and these reflect clubs' hometown pride and their connection with the international organisation. In addition to incorporating the Rotary emblem, banners often include symbols or imagery of a club's town, region, or country. Others represent local craftsmanship or cultural traditions by displaying leatherwork, weaving, embroidery, or hand-painted designs. Our Club holds a large stock of banners (pictured far right) which are available to members who plan to visit distant Rotary Clubs whilst travelling. Please ask for them at the front desk on Tuesdays.
