President's Message Life is Good at Hunters Ridge The Clubhouse Renovation project is progressing for a targeted start date of late April Like last year with the Grill Room project, there is not enough hours in the day, but we will get through this exciting, time consuming phase and it will be over before you know it. We have frozen the design of the floor plan and proceeding with construction drawings and specifications. The team we have assembled to work with us on this project is GMA Architects, AIA and Don Garrett, Construction Management (CM). Each issue of the ScoreCard will feature a Clubhouse Renovation and Expansion Report which will be the latest news on the project. We will, by mid-march, post on the HRCA web site drawings of the project and all communication regarding this renovation, not for idea input as we are past being able to accommodate changes unless required by code, the budget or an unforeseen necessity. We have a record number of members serving on committees this year. In order to further increase member participation we have decided to call for committee volunteers twice by including the call for volunteers with the first notice in November and the final notice for the Annual Meeting and Board Election. We thank each and every one of you for your valuable service to our community. We will have a Town Hall Meeting for our members very soon where the membership can talk about and bring anything of concern to our Board. Hope you all are continuing to remember our newly resurrected motto "Hunters Ridge, A Circle of Friends. Waving and smiling goes a long way and pretty soon it will be second nature for us all. Fred Forbes, Board President board@huntersridge-ca.com Life is truly good at Hunters Ridge! Just as one renovation is completed under budget and on time by the way we begin another. Construction on the Main Dining Room/Kitchen Renovation is scheduled to begin in late April. During this renovation it is our goal to keep the down time to a minimum and not have our restaurant facilities closed unless absolutely necessary. The Grill Room and The Ridge will be open for their normal hours of operation throughout the entire summer and into the fall months except for the normal closing time for cleaning, inventory, etc in late August for two weeks. We will let you know the exact dates as we get closer to the summer months. Our focus is always on safety. Please obey all posted speed limits. Please go the correct way around all of our traffic circles especially at Rose Myrtle and Fox Ridge Drive. This is truly a critical area. Walkers please walk against the flow of traffic. Bicyclists please ride with the flow of traffic. Everyone please come to a complete stop at all stop signs. Please do not tailgate other vehicles into the community. Please report suspicious activity to security or to the administration office as soon as you see something. Thanks to all the members residing in Grand Pines for installing brand new pavers in the driveways, walkways and parking areas. It looks beautiful and adds tremendously to the aesthetics and values of the entire community. The HRCA Architectural Review Board (ARB) encourages all single family homeowners, south villa owners and north villa owners on Fox Ridge Drive to do the same. Currently there are several south villa owners wanting to install pavers for their driveways and walkways. We are trying to coordinate as many properties as we can so that each homeowner gets a better price from the contractor. If you are interested, please give us a call at your earliest convenience. It makes such a beautiful difference. Don Huprich, General Manager

Hunters Ridge Fishing Club Have you joined the Fishing Club? What are you waiting for? On February 17 th the club completed its first fishing trip. The trip was with A&B Charters out of Naples. There were three boats and 23 members fishing on the four and a half hour trip and over 100 fish were caught. The team of Ron and Sondra Parmiter, Keith Glover, Dick Thomas, John Jacobs and Nick Kokotovich caught the most fish. The largest fish was caught by Rich Berry (below right) and was a Red Grouper that was 24 inches long and weighed over 10 pounds! We will be planning the next trip very shortly and will contact all club members as to the next meeting date and the trip details. Please contact any member of the committee to find out about membership in the club. Chuck Ingersoll, Bill Bell, Ron Parmiter and Norm Jalbert Clubhouse Renovation and Expansion Project Report The months of January and February were a critical period for the Project s organization and for making key decisions on the Clubhouse s structural design and interior layout requirements. Early on, after reviewing six proposals for architects and construction managers, both GMA Architects and D. Garrett Construction were selected for this important renovation and expansion project. Both professional firms have in-depth knowledge and experience in golf club construction projects, especially in renovations and additions made to existing facilities. For the past several weeks, we ve also focused on defining the needs of the membership in this project by soliciting suggestions on the building s design features via meetings, s and individual conversations. All suggestions were sent to GMA Architects for review and many of them have been included in the final building designs. Structural designs and floor plans are now being frozen so that we can move ahead with the completion of construction drawings. We will soon need to apply for the building permit and to advance order the new roof trusses. In this regard, we had very productive meetings last week with GMA and their engineering staff at both GMA s offices in Ft. Myers as well as at Hunters Ridge s Clubhouse. These meetings finalized several design features and gathered certain building information in order to define the Clubhouse s expanded structural needs and how these will be integrated into the existing building. Time was also spent in defining the electrical requirements and its distribution, lighting, egress/ingress alternatives between kitchen and dining room, access between the dining room and lanai, new HVAC capacity and distribution as well as searching for high quality/low cost solutions to several other issues. We will again use the Hunters Ridge website as another means to keep you up to date on the Project and will begin posting finished drawings and other related information on the Clubhouse renovation by the middle of March. Regular reports, like this one, will be published in the ScoreCard throughout the year and also be posted on the website. As we did in the Grill Room/Lobby renovation, we have set up a core group consisting of Fred Forbes, Dick DeCoste, Harold King and Don Huprich to direct the Architect and Construction Management firms, to oversee the Clubhouse s budget and schedule and to regularly communicate the project s progress to the membership. Financing for the project is well underway. The $3,525 up front payments in lieu of the $37 monthly member charge are due by April 1, 2015 and statements will soon be mailed to those members who indicated their wish to make this single payment. Several member loans will be received during the second quarter of 2015 to satisfy the cash outlays required to support the Project s schedule of expenditures. Fred Forbes, Dick DeCoste, Harold King, Don Huprich

CHIP SHOTS This season has gone by very quickly and Spring Break is right around the corner for many families. This is a great time of year to be at Hunters Ridge. We are committed to making your experience very enjoyable and need your help in achieving this. Spring Break is a very busy time of year; please remember your fun must be within the rules and regulations. Please inform your guests of the dress code policies for the golf course and practice areas. This time of year, the golf course is extremely busy. Your patience is appreciated when making a tee time or running into a slow play issue on the golf course. Thank you for continuing to fill your divots, repairing ball marks and following the cart rules. Keep up the good work! 90-Degree Cart Rule. Golfers are required to keep carts on the paths until they are even with a golf ball in the fairway. Only then should the cart leave the path, turning at 90 degrees to drive straight across to the golf ball. After playing the shot, the cart should be driven directly back to the cart path and then remain on the path until pulling even with another ball. All four tires should be kept on the cart paths when possible. The yellow stakes are a reminder to take the cart back to the path. Thank you for your help. The 26 th Annual Ladies Member-Guest Follow the Yellow Brick Road will be held on March 18 th and 19 th. Please see the golf shop for possible openings. This will be another great ladies event! The 12 th Annual Ladies 9-Hole Invitational is coming on Thursday, April 9 th. The theme is Rhinestone Cowgirls. The ladies have been working on putting together another fantastic tournament. Sign up and join in the fun! The 2 nd Annual Hunters Ridge Open will be held on April 13 th, 14 th and 15 th. This tournament gives members the opportunity to enjoy a team match play format. Each twoplayer team will compete in flights of six. You will play five 9-hole matches against the other teams in your flight. Teams will be placed into flights based on total team handicap, not by tee assignment or gender. No more than 18 strokes between partners. Your team may consist of man/man, man/lady or lady/lady. A shootout of the flight winners will be played following the completion of matches. The field will be limited to the first 48 two player teams. If you are using a Blue Flag, please stay 30 from the greens. Do not use Range Balls on the golf course. Please do not park golf carts in the Handicap Parking spaces To Villa Owners: Recently there have been several requests from Villa owners for landscape repairs, improvements and/or modifications. A Villa Committee task force has reviewed the nature of these requests and also compared them to the 2015 budget and associated guidelines. The 2015 Villa budget for Repair and Replace Landscaping" was, and always has been, established to complete necessary modifications to maintain an overall pleasing appearance in the community. This budget together with a similar line item for other common areas was not intended to satisfy personal requests for landscape preferences. Therefore, the committee has advised Management and the Board that they recommend careful scrutiny of all villa owners requests to insure that the intent of the budget guidelines are followed. Requests for landscape changes outside the budget guidelines will be the responsibility of the owners and subject to ARB review.

TRIP'S QUIPS: RULES, TIPS, & MORE! The saying, "March comes in like a lion" certainly rings true here at Hunters Ridge in terms of tournament golf. Our busiest month includes the Ladies and Men s Ringer events, the Ladies and Men s Monthly Scrambles, the Ladies Member- Guest, and the Club Championships. After a busy month like this, maybe it's good that "March goes out like a lamb?" Have a great March everyone! TWO FOR ONE RULES SPECIAL Scenario #1: Player "A" looks into the bag of player "B" to determine which club player "B" used to hit their shot. Is this the equivalent of asking for advice? Answer: NO, it is NOT. Information obtained by observation is not advice, however you may not make a physical act of searching the player's bag (i.e. moving a towel or shifting clubs around) to obtain this information. Penalty for breaching Rule 8-1 is loss of hole in Match Play and two strokes in stroke play. IF the following has EVER happened to anyone, or you know someone who this happened to, please let me know. The Rule of Golf and its Decisions concerning those Rules cover just about everything including this one. Scenario #2: The shaft of a player's club broke during the downswing. The player stopped the swing short of the ball, but the club head fell and moved the ball. What is the ruling? Answer: The player did NOT make a STROKE--the forward movement of the club with the intention of striking at and moving the ball, but if a player "checks" the downswing voluntarily before the club head reaches the ball no stroke has been made. If the ball was not in play (i.e. it involved a tee shot), no penalty is incurred and the ball must be played from the teeing ground. if the ball was IN PLAY, the player would incur a one-stroke penalty under Rule 18-2a (ball moved by player, caddie, or equipment) or 2b (ball moved after address) and the ball must be replaced. So if you're one of those incredible players like Tiger Woods who can stop their swing on the downswing like that, hopefully it'll be on the tee or else it's going to cost you! SPEAKING OF WOODS...Tiger's recent struggles on Tour since returning from back surgery (especially in his short game) bring to mind a couple of things: 1) Making major swing changes is difficult, even for a former World #1. If you're making some type of change, keep doing what you know to be correct. Practice makes (almost) perfect. 2) Keep practicing. Tiger said he was practicing less so he could spend more time with his children. Quite understandable and admirable. However, he needs to practice more to work on things both physical and mental. 3) Anxiety about not being perfect has crept into all parts of Tiger's game, especially his short game. Positive thoughts can lead to positive actions. Think you'll do something well and you'll probably do it well. Think negatively and the results will mostly be predictable. Around the greens, think that you can get the ball close or feel that you can hole out. I swear Tiger made more putts when he had to over the years simply because he felt he could make them ALL. Hard to argue with that approach. STAY POSITIVE. ARE YOU REALLY PICKING YOUR HEAD UP? One of the most INCORRECTLY used phrases in golf is "keep your head down." This is actually wrong on a couple of fronts. First, players shouldn't bury their chins in their chest during the swing. This limits the proper rotation of the shoulders and shuts off the finish causing lack of power and direction problems. Also, are you really picking your head up? If you hit a thin shot that dribbles on the ground, it would seem that the player picked their head up. The answer here is the since the head is attached to the torso, it's not really the head moving up and away, but a combination of factors that make the player pick up the head and raise the swing path up over the ball. Some players lose their knee flex. Some players loose the spine angle. Other players pull their arms and hands in toward their bodies losing the triangle made between the shoulders and arms with the club (also known as chicken winging). To fix the problem, hit balls focusing on brushing grass ahead of the ball. This will help you keep your spine angle, knee flex, and your arms fully extended producing more consistency and power. If you're having problems with hitting thin shots, or any other part of your game, see your PGA Professionals Mark, Rob, or Trip and set up a private lessons. Half hour lessons are $40 and hour lessons are $60. For those who prefer group instruction, our Monday Golf Clinics for March are scheduled for March 2nd (hybrids) and March 16th (irons). All clinics 3:30 and cost $20 cash or check to the Professional. Sign up in the Golf Shop to ensure your inclusion as space is limited to the first 10 participants to enroll. Have a great March everyone and Keep it in the Short Grass! Trip Stracka, PGA, Assistant Dir. of Golf.

From the Greens Hello to all, we hope everyone is having a great golf season. The weather has been just gorgeous this winter and with the periodical rain showers Hunters Ridge has received, we've been able to keep the course in the green, (so to speak). With the exception of some high traffic wear areas, the turf is holding up very well for this time of year. Please remember to keep golf carts on the cart path as much as possible and try not to drive on areas that are showing heavy traffic wear. As they are every year at this time, ball marks and divots are a big issue. Please repair your ball marks on the greens and fill your divots in the fairways. A repaired ball mark and/or filled divot will heal itself faster than those not repaired or filled. With summer fast approaching, so is our golf course cultural season. The first greens aerification will be performed on May 3rd (no tee times after 11 AM) and May 4th (course closed all day). The golf course will reopen on Tuesday, May 5th. Again this year the golf course will be closed on Mondays beginning June 1st through Monday, September 28th (except Labor Day, Monday, September 7th) for maintenance. The golf course will also be closed Monday, June 8th through Monday June 22nd (reopening Tuesday, June 23rd) and closed Monday, August 17th through Monday, August 31st (reopening Tuesday, September 1st) for cultural practices. Other cultural practices that we will be implementing throughout this next growing season will include tree thinning (for improvement with isolated shade issues), tree root pruning (to decrease turf and tree competition for water and nutrients) and turf height of cut adjustments (to control excessive turf growth habits during this growing season). We will also continue with the irrigation layout changes and additions to increase our water conservation and improve our sprinkler coverage. New drainage is also on the list in several areas that are problematic during the rainy season and periods of unseasonably heavy precipitation. Last but not least, improvements in the course's landscape are also scheduled. As you have probably noticed, this has already begun with several permanent natural areas and ornamental area plantings over the last few seasons. With all of the continued agronomic practices, irrigation improvements and landscape additions, the future looks very bright for our members and guests to have a better than ever golfing experience. See You on the Course! Anthony Duncan, Golf Course Superintendent These cultural practices include aerifying, verticuting and scalping all turf surfaces (except there will be no verticuting the roughs during the second two week closure in August). We will also be top dressing all turf surfaces except roughs. These practices are necessary to maintain and improve the quality and playability of the turf that we consistently strive.

Food and Beverage Notes Our first event to kick off the month of March will be a party at The Ridge with Joey Fiato from 4:30-7:00pm on Friday, March 6. We will be serving a good, old fashioned cookout with hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken and all the trimmings for $ Thru the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Sparks, Mr. and Mrs. Seria, Mr. and Mrs. Frantz, Mr. and Mrs. Leibrand and Mr. and Mrs. Ingrassia we will be able to enjoy the sounds of Laurie Saunders at our Mix and Mingle on March 10 from 5:30-8:30pm. This is a regular Mix and Mingle with the exception of the entertainment. See you there! Our St. Patrick s Day celebration will be held on Saturday, March 14. We will be serving a buffet featuring Corned Beef and Cabbage, Chicken Pot Pie and Shepard s Pie for $ This is our busiest holiday and reservations are required. Entertainers Greg and Claudia will be here to celebrate with us! Our Monthly dinner dance will be held on Saturday, March 28. The Manhattan Connection will be performing from 7:00 to 10:00. We will be offering an all you can eat Italian themed buffet for $27.95 beginning at 6:00pm. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and we will be able to utilize our beautiful Patio. Last year at this time The Ridge was just opening up poolside at the Activity Center. Who could have known what a wonderful addition to Hunters Ridge this would be! What a popular spot to sit and relax with friends. The Ridge is open seven days a week for your enjoyment from 10-5:00pm. We have extended hours on Wednesday and Friday with Happy Hour from 4-6:00pm. Please remember to make your reservations as early as possible for all of our special events by calling If you are booking a table all names of those sitting with you must be provided so that we may avoid double booking. Bill Berg, Food & Beverage Manager MEMBERSHIP MESSAGES We are half way thru the busiest time of the year and we are not slowing down just yet. The months of March and April promise to be full of fun and good times! We ask that you please make your reservations as early as possible for all of our special events we want all of you to be part of the fun. Friendly reminder, please don t forget that all 2015 Annual Dues are to be paid in full by March 31 st, It s time to adjust your clocks for daylight savings time so don t forget to Spring Forward on Sunday, March 8 th. Also, the fire department recommends that this would be a good time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors. Be safe out there, watch your speed and please be courteous of those who walk or ride their bikes. Also, walkers please walk facing the oncoming traffic and bicyclists should ride with the flow of traffic. Since we now own the community sewer treatment plant, Hunters Ridge Utility, all of us must be extra sensitive what we put down the drains. As an example, the more grease, oils, harsh cleaning products, paint and paint thinners we put down our drains, the more money we (the Community Association) have to spend to remove them from this complex sewer treatment system. If you have paint, paint thinners and paint products you need to get rid of, please call our Administrative Office and let me know. We will have our maintenance personnel come to your house, pick these products up and properly dispose of them for you. We thank you in advance for your assistance. I continue to remind everyone to be responsible pet owners and to pick up after your pets. To add to that, please be mindful where you leave the baggies after you pick up your pet s droppings. Please do not throw them in the woods or into shrubs or leave them in view of your neighbors. They should be disposed of in your garbage can inside your garage. Chris Durfey, Membership Director Message from the New Social Committee: We are in need for volunteers to run two of our monthly games, Bingo and Name That Tune. You don t have to be a member of the Social Committee. If you re interested please contact either Dave Miller or John Simoncini ASAP. Also, this month s entertainment events, which come highly recommended by members of the community, are on March 6th from 4:30/7:00 (early the Ridge because of the movie) the man behind the voice, Joey Fiato, on Saturday, March 14 th Greg and Claudia for St. Patrick s Day and on Saturday, March 28th the ever popular Manhattan Connection. Thank you again for your participation & please sign up early to avoid been shut out. All of our entertainment events sell out very quickly.
