1 Newsletter SPECIAL EDITION * * * 2008 MEMBER GUEST * * * SPECIAL EDITION Apt&Knapp Deliver Victory Putt Dark Horse Team Claims Shootout Victory, Ambrose/Johns Take Second Above: Gary Knapp (in blue shirt) watches carefully as partner Dave Apt attempts to make their putt and win the shootout. Right: Gary Knapp calmly sends his putt on its way to the cup... and victory! Victories in golf tournaments come down to the putting. More often than not, the first made putt wins. Such was the case with the 2008 SRGC Member Guest Shootout. The team of Dave Apt and Gary Knapp entered the Member Guest as relative unknowns as Dave is a new member of our club. They ranked ninth in terms of combined handicap in the field of thirty-eight teams and shot a very respectable gross 67, net 6 in the Thursday practice round. Still, most guys looked elsewhere when speculating on who would hold the trophies Saturday night. Dave and Gary won their flight by a slim one point and entered the seven-team shootout as the dark horse. In both the first and second rounds of the shootout, Dave and Gary s shot from 150 yards ended closest to the hole. They were forced to stand and watch all the other teams attempt to make their putts or chips. The first round saw five teams tie with and two teams eliminated. All five teams in the second round had reasonable chances to make a 2. Time after time putts came very close to going in. Finally, Dave and Gary had their chance. Dave played first as Gary positioned himself to watch the roll of the putt. When Dave s putt missed on the low side, Gary stepped up and drained the ten-footer to claim victory. A third shootout round failed to yield a single second place winner so the two low scoring teams settled the matter with a chip off. Dave Ambrose and Pete Johns won the chip off when their shot ended two feet from the cup. Welcome to the Club, Dave... no longer a dark horse. Shootout Results Round Ambrose/Johns Apt/Knapp Bradley/Calo Hogg/Hogg Oliff/Granetz Able/Cunningham Jancaitis/Jancaitis st Place Chip Off 2 feet 2nd Place feet Teams play the eighteenth hole from 150 yards, two-man scramble. The low team and ties from each round move to next round; the other teams are eliminated. The first team to post the lowest score alone in a round is declared the Shootout winner. One additional round is held among those who tie for second low score in the round that produces the winner. If that round does not produce a single low team, the teams tied for the lowest score enter a chip off. The team coming the closest to the hole in the chip off wins second place.

Old Man Par Mexican Vacation Raffle A Huge Success S ECRETS Capri The final business Saturday evening was to draw the winning raffle ticket for the fabulous five-day, fournight all-inclusive vacation at the Secrets Capri Riviera Cancún Resort. Ticket sales were brisk at the dinner right up to the time of the drawing. A total of $1,820 was generated from ticket sales and went to support the Member Guest Tournament. Congratulations to Russ Ludwig, the guest of Andy Spellar, for winning the vacation. We will share some photos of their vacation in an upcoming newsletter.

Mike Cunningham not shown. Old Man Par Old Man Par Still Has Game Despite the best efforts of the Club staff and the Golf Committee to promote the Member Guest Tournament, they failed to attract a sufficient number of teams to fill seven flights. The number of teams fluctuated between 8 and 0 during the registration period and efforts continued beyond the original deadline to get to a full 2-team field. In the end, the final number settled at 8 teams. Wanting to give every interested member the chance to compete, the staff and committee decided to invite Old Man Par to fill out the field. The tournament consisted of seven flights of six teams each. Each team played a 9-hole match against the five other teams in their flight. Each match was worth 9 points, one per hole. The team earning the most points in their five matches would win their flight, unless a team managed to win all five of their matches. In that case, that team would automatically win their flight no matter the number of points earned. Four flights had five teams and Old Man Par. The Old Man showed up for each match with a 9-hole score of 6 already on the card. As tough as the Old Man played, he was not permitted to win a flight or any money. The prizes were earned by the live teams. A member of the professional staff or a volunteer played along with the competing team as a marker to monitor their match against Old Man Par. Reports from the weekend indicate that Old Man Par still sets a tough standard for many teams in the tournament. Congratulations to Brian Able and Mike Cunningham for being the only team to vanquish the Old Man.

6 Pebble Beach Flight Aaron Hopper Jeff Richmond Nick Polito Justin Lasala Ron Ackermann Cathy Ahye MATCH 1 2 Day 5 Day Total Jim Jancaitis Tom Jancaitis Howard Pope Jeff DeVuono Flight winners: Tom Jancaitis (L) and Jim Jancaitis (R). Old Man Par So Close ! Above, left to right: Torrey Pines Flight winners Dave Ambrose and Pete Johns faced a putt of some 15 feet in the second round of the shootout. Pete Johns hit the first attempt, watched carefully by partner Dave Ambrose (L). Dave then stepped in and stroked his attempt (C). Dave s reaction told the story as his putt slid by the cup (R). Dave and Pete eventually finished second by winning a chip off. Thanks to the Club Staff! The Member Guest weekend presents a major challenge to the entire Club staff, from preparing the course for play, staging carts, preparing the range and providing numerous meals for our large group. To add to the demands, weather was a major factor on Saturday. The staff performed admirably in allowing us to complete our playing schedule after a one-hour rain delay Saturday morning. The unexpected challenge came once most of the crowd of some 10 players and spouses arrived for the final awards dinner Saturday evening in the pavilion. Storm clouds loomed for a time before the skies opened up with a thunderstorm lasting over an hour. The F&B staff scrambled to move the unprotected buffet tables under cover and dry everything off. This happened under the watchful eye of Head PGA Professional Willy Lutz, who, while not physically present, provided his steady leadership... and some snappy Mexican guitar music! The Golf Committee and players extend a sincere thanks to General Manager Mike Maloney, Willy Lutz and their entire staff for a wonderful event.

7 Thank you to our great sponsors! The Professional Staff, Golf Committee and Members of South Riding Golf Club are pleased to recognize the following businesses for their contributions to this year s event. We encourage all members and their guests to give strong consideration to supporting the businesses and individuals who sponsored this year s event. Obtaining sponsors for this event allows us to: generate funds to help defray expenses; provide opportunities (hole-in-one contest, door prizes) we might not be able to provide otherwise; most importantly, make a donation to our local high school s golf program. $500 Hole Sponsors: $250 Program Sponsors: Chantilly Sue Kramer Independent Distributors Great Energy and Weight loss Products $100 Tournament Sponsors: Patrick R.
