8 Golf BY JASON ALEXANDER, EMILE ASOUS, & DANIEL GONZALES Men s Match Play March 31 - April 2 at Nicklaus The 2017 Men s Match Play will be held March 31 April 2 at Nicklaus. A 12:30 PM shotgun on Friday will serve as the qualifier for the tournament. This round will also serve to seed members into the different brackets. The 2016 champions of each division will be seeded number one in their brackets. Rounds one and two will be played Saturday morning and afternoon respectively. All members are guaranteed two matches. Members who lose the first round will be seeded in a consolation bracket. Winners of Saturday afternoon will advance to Sunday morning. Sunday morning winners will advance to the championship matches Sunday afternoon. Sign up in the Nicklaus golf shop by calling or emile.asous@carltonwoods.com. Ladies Match Play March at Fazio The Ladies Match Play Tournament is the first major event of the 2017 season. For the first time in in 4 years the Ladies Match Play will be held on the Fazio Championship Golf Course for three consecutive days with starting times beginning at 9:00 AM. The entry deadline for this event is March 1 at 12:00 PM. If you would like to sign up or have any questions in regards to the event, please contact Daniel Gonzales at daniel.gonzales@carltonwoods.com. We hope you will join us in kicking of a great tournament season! Wednesday is Guest Day Through the end of March, Wednesday will be Guest Day at both Nicklaus and Fazio courses. Members can bring a guest to play 18 holes for $75. This includes the guest fee, cart fee, and caddie bag fee (gratuity not included). Grab some friends and head up to the Club. We look forward to seeing you! Spring Men s Member Guest April Spring is moving near and with it comes the inspired anticipation of a great golf season. Come share in the pageantry of The Club at Carlton Woods as we present our Spring Member/Guest. As per tradition, the event will be held the third weekend of April. Carlton Bowl III On Super Bowl Sunday while Houston, Texas was preparing to host the biggest football game of the year, about 40 miles up I-45 north the most prestigious golf event of Super Bowl Sunday was ready to kick-off! Carlton Bowl III consisted of 80 star players of The Club at Carlton Woods as they prepared for a battle of football and golf skill on the gridiron of the Fazio Championship Course. Each golfer played their own ball trying to score as many stableford points as possible along with maneuvering though four football themed skill challenges on the course. Led by 2-time Carlton Bowl MVP Arlin Maddox, the Falcons narrowly squeezed by the Patriots for the victory! What a unique event, said MVP Maddox. Tom Brady better look out. I ve got 2 MVP awards now! A great time was had by all in what turned out to be a precursor for the fantastic Super Bowl that was played that night. Ladies Member/Guest April 4-6 The year s Ladies Member/Guest will take place April 4-6 with a Diamonds In The Rough theme. 9 Photo by Daniel Gonzales Agronomy BY TIM HUBER This March both courses will be repeating last year s Dry Ject Greens aerification. The Nicklaus course will be closed March 6-9, and the Fazio Course Closed March This process is unique and highly effective to incorporate new pure sand into the green s soil profile. It helps to dilute the thatch and organic matter, improve firmness, drainage, and over plant health. However, we won t stop there. Both courses will be performing tradition core aerification as well to remove thatch and organic and incorporate even more new material into the soil profile. Additionally, the courses will be aerifiying tee tops and fairway landing areas. This will help those playing surfaces move water through the profile, providing more firmness and further benefiting plant health. Historically, on our old schedule one course would aerify in February; however that time of year tends to be hit or miss with cold temperatures which make healing time much longer. transition the semi-dormant grass all at the same time. 10 Tennis BY CARY LOTHRINGER Adult Beginner Tennis Classes Wednesdays 9:00-10:30 AM This class is designed for adults who have never played tennis or those who have very little tennis experience. Classes will consist of proper tennis technique covering forehands, backhands, approach shots, volleys, serves and point play. Participants will also become familiar with parts of the tennis court as well as scoring. Demo racquets are available. $35 per class/minimum of 3 in attendance. Adult Mixed Drills Saturdays 9:00 10:30 AM Adult Mixed Drills is offered to all men and women each Saturday morning at 9:00 AM. This clinic consists of an easy warm-up, followed by fast-paced point play drills and ends with a friendly game of mixed doubles. The drills are limited to 12 players, but will require a minimum of 3 players. This duel has become a semi-annual occurrence where the host club is alternated. This match, we will be heading to Miramont Country Club! Each team will consist of 16 players; cost is $40 per person. U.S. Claycourt Championship Monday, April 3 through Sunday, April 9 The 107 th US Men s Clay Court Championship will be held April 3-9, 2017 at River Oaks Country Club in Houston. Started by the USTA in 1910, the Clay Court Championship has been held at numerous venues around the country. Mark has been a USTPA Pro for over 20 years and has been teaching all ages and levels of tennis for 25 years. He loves to travel and his family fosters golden retrievers for Golden Beginnings of Houston. 10 The Club at Carlton Woods Cinco de Mayo Tennis Mixer Friday, May 5 6:00 10:00 PM Join us Friday, May 5 at 6:00 PM, when we will be hosting our 3 rd annual Cinco de Mayo Mixer. Format will be mix-and match social doubles. Mexican flavors will be served. The cost to attend is $30 per adult or $55 per couple. Ladies Member/Guest Tournament Wednesday, May 10 from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM On Wednesday, May 10, we will host our 10 th Annual Spring Ladies Member-Guest Tournament! The event will begin at 8:30 AM with continental breakfast served. Tournament play begins at 9:00 AM and concludes at noon with lunch served. Awards will be presented to the 1 st and 2 nd place finishers in each division. Each participant will receive a tournament gift. Cost is $160 per team. 11 Ankle Biters Wednesdays from 3:15 4:00 PM Ankle Biters tennis class is designed for children 3-4 years of age. Classes will consist of three to four stations during a 45 minute class. These future tennis players will participate in a fun energetic environment while learning to share and interact with other children. The focus will consist of basic tennis techniques to handeye coordination drills. The cost will be $25 per class. Spring Junior Tennis Program Sessions: February 27 - March 30 (No classes March 13-17) April 3-27 May 1-25 Quick Start Pee Wee Class (Ages: 4 6) Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00 5:00 PM Session: $175 This class is designed around the Quick Start Tennis Program. Low compression red balls will be utilized on 36 foot courts to introduce children to the game of tennis. Each class incorporates handeye coordination drills, basic stroke techniques and cooperative rallying skills! Quick Start Beginner Class (Ages: 7 9) Mondays and Wednesdays 4:00 5:00 PM Session: $175 This class is designed around the Quick Start Tennis Program as well and will also utilize 36 foot courts with low compression red balls. The lower bounce is appropriate for child s size. Development of technique and simple tactics will be covered. Little to no tennis experience is required. Cooperative team games and activities are played. Fitness Two New Evening Classes Pilates Bootcamp Mondays at 5:30 PM Pilates Bootcamp is a fusion of cardio drills, Pilates and innovative core exercises designed to challenge, strengthen and tone your whole body. This one hour class will utilize the Pilates reformer, TRX, cardio drills and stretching. This is a fee based class: $25.00 per class or $100 for 5 sessions Pulse Pointe Barre Wednesdays at 5:30 PM Pulse Pointe Barre is a total body workout that incorporates cardio, strength and stretch movement to achieve heightened cardiovascular endurance, long and lean toning, better overall balance and flexibility. No charge for this 60 minute class Member-Member Champions - Kristi Smith and José Blanco Quick Start Intermediate Class Mondays and Wednesdays 5:00 6:00 PM Session: $175 This class will utilize 60 foot courts with low compression orange balls. The goal will be to develop all the strokes. Fun, competitive drills and games that teach tactics will also be covered. Elite Program Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:30 7:00 PM Session: $280 These players have demonstrated the desire and determination to take their games to a higher level. Advanced tactics and techniques will be taught in this class. There will be more emphasis on individual achievement versus cooperative play. High performance drills and match play will be the focus.
