For project purposes, management is considered to include feeding, grooming, exercising, training, and stall maintenance. The 4-H member is not allowed under any circumstances to exhibit stallions at any 4-H horse event. The 4-H member must file an identification certificate for his/her horse with the county extension office by April 15th of the current 4- H program year. Although horses are not required to be registered with any breed association, it is recommended that the 4-H member has documentation verifying the identity and ownership of the horse (e.g., registration certificate, New Mexico brand inspection transport permit, etc.). The 4H member is not allowed under any circumstances to exhibit stallions at any 4H horse event. The 4H member must file an identification certificate for his/her horse with the county extension office by April 15th of the current 4-H program year. Although horses are not required to be registered with any breed association, it is recommended that the 4H member has documentation verifying the identity and ownership of the horse (e.g., registration certificate, New Mexico brand inspection transport permit, etc.) 2. Conduct of classes and Show Management. Show Management must offer novice, junior, and senior divisions for the following classes (see exception for reining) at an approved 4H Show. These classes (and associated courses, patterns, equipment requirements, arena requirements, etc.) will be conducted and judged according to the rules printed in the most current handbook of the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) in Amarillo, TX. The handbook is available online at It is advised that any other 4H classes offered outside of these be governed by AQHA rules for that particular class. For those classes not specifically included in the AQHA rules, the Horse Show Judge is the final authority on how that particular class should be conducted and judged. Furthermore, the Horse Show Judge is the final authority for interpreting AQHA rules as they apply to conduct of a show. In the event of inclement weather, the Horse Show Judge is the final authority on determining which classes can safely be held. If a class is not conducted due to the Judge s ruling, then no points will be awarded for that class. In the case where omission of a class prevents a 4H member from qualifying for the State Fair 4H Horse Show in that specific event, the 4H member can send a written letter to the Agriculture and Natural Resources Specialist at the State 4H Office for a ruling on their eligibility to compete at the State Fair 4H Horse Show. 4-H Page 12

Upon accepting the judging assignment, the Horse Show Management should send a copy of these rules to the Judge. Furthermore, the Horse Show Management should have a copy of these rules and the current year s AQHA rulebook on hand at the show for review. 3. New Mexico 4H Horse Show Dress Code Requirements and use of prohibited equipment (to be enforced at all 4-H Shows) Showmanship and Western Performance Events Only dark blue or black jeans are permitted. Long sleeved shirt tucked into pants. Long sleeved shirt is defined as a western style long sleeve shirt with buttons or snaps down the front. The shirt will have a fold down collar that can have a button. NO SWEAT SHIRTS, TURTLENECKS, SLINKIES, T-SHIRTS, PULLOVERS SWEATERS OR VESTS. Per AQHA, Judges, at their discretion, may authorize adjustments to attire due to weather-related conditions. Ties, scarves and gloves are optional. Western hats, or ASTM/SEI approved helmet, must be worn in ALL Western classes. A western hat or helmet must be worn during Barrel Racing and Pole Bending in accordance with AQHA rules. NO CHAPS except in Reining where chaps are optional. Appropriate Hunt Seat Class Attire per current AQHA Handbook For a list of prohibited equipment, consult the current AQHA Handbook. It is recommended that show management designate someone to assist the Horse Show Judge as an equipment and attire judge. This person should be knowledgeable in the rules provided herein and call to the attention of the Horse Show Judge any suspected violations of the dress code and/or use of prohibited equipment before final placing of the individual in that class or go round. The Horse Show Judge is the final authority on whether or not the dress code has been violated and/or prohibited equipment has been used. Violation of these rules will be cause for disqualification for that particular class. Per AQHA rule SHW912.11, A judge cannot change his/her score card (record) after awards have been presented unless a clerical error has occurred. In the event of a clerical error, validated by proper documentation, the clerical error must be corrected before show results are entered. 4. Determination of All Around Awards The point system will be a modified point system based on AQHA rules and regulations. This will be based off of 6 points for a full class. This means a class with 6 or more entries. Points will be awarded: 1st 6 points; 2nd 5 points; 3rd 4 points; 4th 3 points; 5th 2 points; 6th 1 point. If a class has 6 or less entries, then points should be given for the number of entries. Ex: if novice showmanship at halter has only 4 entries, then 1st place would receive 4 points; 2nd 3 points; 3rd 2 points; 4th 1 point. The winner is determined by adding the points earned by each contestant and each horse in which s/he has placed in the top six. Points are compiled on a one-horse, one 4-H member basis. In the event of a tie, the order of the tie breakers will be: (1) earned points in the greatest number of events, (2) earned the most points in the riding classes, (3) greatest # of first places, (4) coin toss. 4-H Page 13

A. TWO-YEAR-OLD WESTERN PLEASURE FUTURITY AND SHOWMANSHIP CLASSIC 4-H ers with advanced skills in horsemanship are eligible to nominate a two-year-old horse for the Western Pleasure Futurity and Showmanship Classic held each year during the State Fair 4-H Horse Show. Nominations are due in the State 4-H Office by May 1st of the current 4-H program year. Horses eligible for the two-year-old Western Pleasure Futurity must be totally green, that is, having never received any riding by ANYONE other than the 4-Her who nominates the horse to the futurity. During the NMSF 4H Horse Show, the horses will participate in three go-rounds of Western Pleasure. 1. Basic Rules for the Western Pleasure Futurity a. The 4-H member, brother or sister, parent or guardian must own the horses. Horses eligible for the two-year-old Western Pleasure Futurity must be totally green, having never received any riding by anyone other than the 4-H member who nominates the horse. b. Horses must be in the 4-H member s possession and under his or her complete management and care by April 15 of the current year. c. 4-H members may nominate more than one horse, but may only show one horse. d. 4-H members nominate horses for the futurity by completing the nomination form available from the State 4H Office. The nomination form must be certified (signed) by the county extension agent. A $20.00 nomination fee must accompany the form. Futurity nominations must be in the State 4-H Office postmarked no later than April 15. No late entries will be accepted. A list of horses nominated, will be published after the nomination deadline. Nomination does not constitute an entry to the NMSF Horse Show or Western Pleasure Futurity Class. Arrangements for a stall should be made with the NMSF at the time of entry. e. 4-H members, with a properly nominated horse, may enter their futurity project in the NMSF 4-H Horse Show. Members must submit the appropriate Entry Forms and entry fee (as directed in the current New Mexico State Fair Premium Book). f. Persons other than the 4-H member who nominates the horse for the futurity may have shown a futurity horse at halter and/or showmanship prior to becoming a futurity nominee. As soon as the horse becomes a futurity project, it can only be ridden and shown in riding classes by the 4-H member. g. Advice and counsel on training techniques may come from outside sources; however, the 4-H member must do all the riding and work on his/her own futurity horse (Refer to 1a). Horses for the futurity do not have to be registered. It is suggested that 4-H ers be in level three of horsemanship before becoming involved with a futurity project. The futurity is not for beginning horsemen, especially not for very young horsemen. 2. Procedures - Western Pleasure Futurity a. Three go-rounds will be held during the NMSF 4-H Horse Show, with a different Judge for each goround. b. The point system will be a modified point system based on AQHA rules and regulations. Ex: if novice showmanship at halter has only 4 entries, then 1st place would receive 4 points; 2nd 3 points; 3rd 2 points; 4th 1 point. c. Winner of the buckle will be the horse with the greatest number of points after all 3 go-rounds. d. AQHA equipment rules for the two-year-old Western Pleasure Class will be used. e. It is suggested that each district show offer a class for the futurity prospects only. 4-H Page 14

3. Procedures- Showmanship Classic An additional dimension to the Western Pleasure Futurity is the Showmanship Classic. It is only open to those horses nominated to the Western Pleasure Futurity. This will enable 4-H ers who do not feel their futurity prospect is sufficiently trained for the Western Pleasure Futurity to participate in the NMSF 4H Horse Show, and it will assure their futurity prospect s eligibility for the three-year-old versatility class the following year. The Showmanship Classic is also open to those horses that are going to be shown in the Western Pleasure Futurity. If the 4-H member has nominated (2) two or more horses to the two-year-old Western Pleasure Futurity, he or she may only show one horse in the Western Pleasure Futurity, but may show a different eligible horse in the Showmanship Classic. 4. Basic Rules for Showmanship Classic a. Only those horses properly nominated to the Western Pleasure Futurity are eligible for the Showmanship Classic. b. Members must submit the appropriate Entry Forms and entry fee (as directed in the current New Mexico State Fair Premium Book). c. The Showmanship Classic will be handled in the same manner as the regular showmanship class. Exhibitors may be asked oral questions by the Judge. The exhibitor s score will be a combination of the score on showmanship and the score on the questions. Note: Only those horses that are nominated as two-year-olds for the two-year-old Western Pleasure Futurity, whether shown or not, will be eligible for the three-year old Versatility Class the following year. B. 4-H THREE-YEAR-OLD VERSATILITY The horses properly nominated, as two-year-olds to the futurity are eligible the following year to enter the three-year-old versatility class. Advice and counsel on training techniques may come from outside sources; however, the 4-H member must do all the riding and work on the versatility horse. The versatility class is held during the NMSF 4-H Horse Show. Nominations for the versatility class are due to the State 4- H Office by May 1st of the current year. I. Basic Rules for the Versatility Class 1. Only those horses properly nominated as two year olds to the Two Year old Western Pleasure Futurity, whether shown or not, are eligible for the three year-old Versatility Class. 2. Advice and counsel on training techniques may come from outside sources; however, the 4-H member must do all the riding and work on his/her own versatility horse. Horses for the versatility class do not have to be registered. It is suggested that 4-H ers be in level three of horsemanship before becoming involved with a futurity project. The futurity is not for beginning horsemen, especially not for very young horsemen. 3. More than one eligible horse may be nominated to the three year Old Versatility Classes. However, only one horse may be shown H members may nominate their horses for the three year old Versatility Class by completing the nomination form. A $20 nomination is due in the State 4-H Office on or before May 1 st. 5. AQHA equipment rules for the Three Year-old Versatility Classes will be used. 6. It is suggested that each district show offer classes for the versatility prospects. 7. The dress code for the State Fair 4-H Horse Show will apply to the Versatility Class. 8. Arrangements for a stall should be made with the New Mexico State Fair at the time of entry. Members must submit the appropriate Entry Forms and entry fee (as directed in the Current New Mexico State Fair Premium Book). 4-H Page 15

II. Procedures- 3 year Old Versatility Classes 1. Class procedure will consist of three separate classes: western pleasure, western horsemanship and trail. These classes will be their own separate classes for versatility nominees. 2. Points will be kept on the places of all three classes. Winner of the versatility buckle will be horse with the greatest number of points. 3. The point system will be a modified point system based on AQHA rules and regulations. 4-H Page 16
