FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello everyone, do not know about you, but as I get older it seems time flies by faster and faster and getting anything done requires a lot more attention to detail. Once again the horse industry has really been thru the wringer in 2009, as have many businesses due to the economy. The start of a new year represents more than the passage of time. It is a perfect time to take stock of where your horse business has been, decide where you want it to go, and develop a strategy to get there. I would like to welcome the new members and thank those who have renewed their memberships for Your membership helps us support the Foundation Bred Appaloosa. I am happy to announce the BOD approval of the Performance Point Program details can be found in this issue of the Tidings. There are also Directors, Webmaster, and a web site revamp Want Ads in the Tidings. The FAHR Merchandise is selling well. We have received a lot of nice comments about the new merchandise. (jacket, long & short sleeve T- shirts, and belt buckles) the mugs and calendars are also selling well. The calendars are outstanding. Eddie did an excellent job on them again this year. We are looking for suggestions on new Merchandise for this year. If there is something you would like to see in the FAHR Merchandise let us know. FAHR Income and expenditures, FAHR s income is from annual memberships, horse registrations and transfer, Breeders directory, Tidings advertising, Stud book and programs. We also have income from the sale of Merchandise, than recoup the initial expenditure over a period of time. The expenses, associated with printing the Tidings is the largest, than postage, server and domain name, insurance, office supplies and the initial outlay for merchandise. If FAHR had the ability to utilize the web site more we could cut the initial outlay for merchandise way down. The FAHR Website is a top priority for me in I have placed bids wanted for web site rebuild on several internet web designers directories. We are looking for a web designer that moonlights to revamp or build a new website for us using XHTML, CSS and an open source content management system (CMS) such as Joomla. Horse Expos for 2010 that I am planning to attend are the Illinois Horse Fair in Springfield, Illinois on March 5-7, the HHF in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 9-11, the Midwest Horse Fair in Madison, Wisconsin on April If you are planning to attend one of these expos let me know. The current FAHR Presidents term in office expires in Elections will take place at this years annual meeting. All nominees for President must be members of FAHR in good standing and been board members for a minimum of 1 year prior to election. Other FAHR calendar dates: January 1, beginning of membership year. January 19, Tidings deadline. April 19, Tidings deadline. May 1 is the deadline that any member desiring to fill a director position shall submit a written biography to the FAHR secretary by May 1, Check requirements in Tidings director ad. July 19, Tidings deadline. August 16 to September 16 meeting notice description of any matters to be considered at the meeting within a minimum of 30 days and not more than 60 days prior to the meeting. October 16, Annual meeting. October 19, Tidings deadline. November 30, the Saddle Log and Endurance Program for 2010 ends. December 1, 2010 starts the new 2011 year for the Saddle Log and Endurance Program. December 31, Stallion reports due, end of membership year, end of point year for Performance Point Program. The Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry is committed to the FAHR registered Horse and representing the needs of its members which can only be done with the involvement of the members at all levels. The Foundation Bred Appaloosa s future is in the hands of its members. I have managed to spend time with my horses, but never as much as I want to. For years I lived to ride but now I have to settle for whatever riding time I can get with the beautiful Foundation bred Appaloosa. Try to appreciate and enjoy your time in the saddle. John Hess

FROM THE EDITOR FROM THE TREASURER FROM THE SADDLE LOG CO-ORDINATOR Hello, Winter is well upon us and I hope everyone on the east coast and the Texas region are surviving Mother Nature s wrath. So far winter in the Pacific Northwest has been fairly mild. We are enjoying temperatures in the lower to mid 50 s which is generally about 10 degrees higher than normal. I hope everyone remembered to file their stallion reports with the FAHR Registrar. There is no cost for filing this form and it helps FAHR to have the get of stallion on file. If you haven t filed it yet, please take the time to send it in. A copy of the ApHC stallion report is acceptable as well. I m sure some of you will have your first foals on the ground for 2010 by the time this issue reaches you. As always I would love to receive pictures of the 2010 FAHR eligible foals for the FAHR Foal Showcase. You can send your pictures by to thetidings@reachone.com or snail mail to E Street, rd Ave. SW, Rochester, WA My goal for 2010 is to actually find time to ride my FAHR horse. I have for many years focused primarily on producing generational Toby horses. I have temporarily put my breeding program on hiatus and will take a year off to just enjoy my horses. Hope to see you on the trail, Eddie Street The Tidings Editor Hi all hope everyone had a Blessed New Year! I just want to comment on FAHR's Treasurer Report and reflect a little bit on the year As you can see when you look at the last 2 qtrs on the income/expense statement it looks like a significant loss but as I was going over the entire year totaling all income $ and subtracting expenses $ FAHR only had a ($273.31) loss for the whole year! I think that is pretty good considering this last year and the way the economy has gone! I think if we can continue to get new members and sell more merchandise and people sign up for the new Performance Point Program in this next year 2010 we could see a gain instead of a loss! So be encouraged FAHR members get the word out again about the Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry and buy the new merchandise that we have to offer and sign up for the new Performance Point Program and get those foals registered! Thank You and May God Bless you in the coming year! Dawn Bates FAHR Treasurer Hello Horseback Riders! Where are your Saddle Log Program Applications! You'll have to do a lot of riding to catch up with members Skenno Pierman and Vickie Grant! Vickie has just passed the 500 hour mark on her three appaloosas: Miamis Warsong, Norstaaprilbreeze, and Shadows Titania. Congratulations Vickie. I have not heard from Skenno Peirman lately - he has recorded over 3,500 hours on his three horses, Patchy Cynder Spitzer, Red Eagle s Jessie, and SS dakota Sundance. I hope your health is good. Ginger Karns has 338 hours on Miami s Topatchy Terra. I have 271 hours on my three FAHR horses, Eagles ThunderN- Toby, Plaudit s Eagle Spot, and RRR LWS Finest. I have another appaloosa but she is not FAHR registered. Hope the rest of you had, and will have a good year of riding. Thank you for sending them overseas. Alain Hi Alain, Glad to hear you received the merchandise and that you like the Belt Buckle. John THE FOUNDATION APPALOOSA HAS LOST ONE OF IT S MOST DEDICATED SUPPORTERS It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of one of the greatest supporters and breeders of the Foundation Appaloosa. Milton Decker shared with us that Palmer Wagner, author of The Appaloosa Anthology had passed away on February 6th, The following is a message posted by FAHR Founder, Tom Taylor Thank you, Milton, for letting FAHR know about Palmer. We all knew it had to come, but it didn't make it any easier. I had the pleasure to speak and correspond with Palmer on several occasions and he was always willing to answer my many questions. This was before FAHR was incorporated or the publishing of his book, as well as after. I also spent many an hour researching thru the many articles that were published in the Appaloosa News by him and several other Foundation breeders from the generation before myself. He and the others definitely helped to steer me in what I consider to be the right direction. The greatest respect I could have had for his dedication to the breed was to own Blue Bear Grand Gal whom I considered the pinnacle of his breeding program along with her daughter, Kuetan's Wa-ka-shi, bred by Ken Bliven. I received the following letter from him dated 1/27/03: "Dear Tom, This letter is overdue to share your loss of Blue Bear Grand Gal. She was one of the truly great Appaloosas. In her last photo in the "Tidings", she seemed to be looking right at me. I don't mind saying it reduced me to tears. From now on, we can both take comfort in having known one of the best of the breed. Sincerely, Palmer J. Wagner After receiving that letter, it made me even more proud to have known "the Grand Gal" and having the pleasure of being able to breed her to some fine Foundation Appaloosa stallions. Not one of her foals was ever a disappointment that is for sure. I will always treasure the many letters from Palmer. They were always filled with constructive help. He also strongly endorsed FAHR's policies and standards and felt it would go the farthest of "any other organization to restore respect for the horse that still is (is was underlined) an Appaloosa" (quote was taken from a letter of his to me dated 5/12/98). Palmer had the heart of an Appaloosa and the heart of the Appaloosa never dies. Tom Taylor 15

Why Not An Ulrich Horse? By, Cheryl Palmer The Ulrich horses may not win a halter class with their longer ears, bigger heads, stronger stout legs and feet, thicker throatlatches, but they are beautiful to me. No doll heads here, no skinny throatlatches or toothpick thin legs on these beauties just pure brains, brawn and good horse sense on the trail. Some riders might consider them boring and vanilla because these horses are not drama queens and don t engage in histrionics. Most people don t know that the Ulrich horses originated in Montana with Ralph and Helen Brown s breeding program. The Timberline Ranch in Broadview, Montana was where they raised and developed the Leopard Appaloosas. These leopard horses have changed little since the early days of their development. They still retain their striking leopard coloration and calm temperaments for which they are well known. Ralph Brown s Timberline Ranch became known as the Leopard capital of the world. People from all over the United States and abroad bought these colorful and unique patterned leopard-bred Appaloosas. Don Ulrich bought most of the herd when Ralph and Helen Brown had their big dispersal sale in Montana in the 1960 s. The leopard Appaloosas became even more famous with Mr. Ulrich s outstanding advertising campaign in the Appaloosa News which has since become the Appaloosa Journal. Ulrich s horses became a household word in Appaloosa circles fueled by his slogan, Leopard to Leopard, Appaloosa to Appaloosa, The Best to the Best. Ulrich stamped them with his name and continued the legacy of breeding these leopard bred horses. These heirloom Montana horses have not changed a bit. When Mr. Ulrich died the Ulrich ranch had a dispersal sale in The herd once again was dispersed. Some breeders today have maintained this exquisite line of Foundation Leopard Appaloosas. It is in the blood of these horses to be docile, quiet, sensible trail horses and a very few still have the unusual gifted Indian Shuffle 4- beat gait. They are not flighty but are well grounded and slow to react to upsets around them. They have a built in self confidence and are usually high in the pecking order. A horse I own, Ulrich Sweet Sioux, just twittled her ears and other horses gave her a wide berth. The Ulrich horses are very self reliant and don t mind going out solo on the trail. Once on the Chief Joseph Ride, Ulrich Sweet Sioux became tired and dehydrated. She refused to continue as she needed a break and went off the trail and found a shady spot. She was unmoved that the rest of the group moved on. She was led into camp and required electrolytes Ulrich Sweet Sioux with our grandson, Tyler. and a day off before she could continue. Many of the Ulrich horses are very nurturing and kind. Ulrich Sierra Kitten takes in all the weaned foals and is their surrogate mother. She will even share her grain with them. Our veterinarian has repeatedly asked me if Sierra could be their surrogate mother for the clinics orphan foals. She will let them nurse never discriminating. She is a smart horse and doesn t have a mean bone in her body. Ulrich Sierra Kitten with trainer. Many people think they want spirited horses but after ending up with bumps and bruises they change their minds and decide an Ulrich horse is what they really want. I believe in form and function. Horses with broad faces, square muzzles, straight profiles, stocky body builds, lob ears and almond shaped eyes, all translate to a calm, dependable temperament. The traits above all fit the Ulrich leopard beauties to a T. You can have your pencil thin legged horses, with pin heads, tiny prick ears and more refined body bathing beauty conformation. I ll take the solid, stable, quiet temperament of an Ulrich horse every time. So why not an Ulrich horse? 16

KEEPING YOUR HORSE SAFE My story is a common scenario of the profile of a stolen horse. The person who bought the horse from me put a deposit and never followed through with the terms of the contract and therefore the contract became null and void. Therefore I remained the legal owner. The "buyer" disappeared and though I searched for her I was never able to locate her. What I should have done here was gotten more personal information on the contract so I could have tracked her down. Things such as her license number, husband's name, place of employment, etc. All I had was a signature and a signed contract both of which are meaningless if you can't locate the person. The trail went cold. The horse is a famous horse that is a well known mare in Appaloosa circles and someone saw her name posted on Craigslist and knew the horse was stolen and called me. This led me to Stevens County where the horse had last been seen and boarded out. Following these leads we found out that the barn owner confiscated the horse and sold her. Legally you can not sell a horse without contacting the owner with a certified letter so that they have a chance to reclaim the horse. There is a procedure you must follow before you can arbitrarily claim a horse and then sell it. This is especially true when a horse has a brand on it which mine did and this brand was registered. Anyone can check with a brand inspector and easily track down the owner. Luckily this story has a happy ending as the person who had the horse contacted me and agreed to return the mare. This woman was a decent and honest person who did the right thing. Most stolen horses are never found. In my case of a stolen horse, it was the people that helped me find my horse. The women who had the horse was a hero in my eyes as she willingly returned my horse to me and this horse will never be sold again and will live out her life at my ranch. The public may not know this but stealing horses is on the rise as well as other criminal activity. It is an ongoing problem where horses have been stolen, confiscated, and illegally sold for a quick buck. Learn to protect yourself from being a victim of either selling a horse that is not legally theirs to sell or buying a stolen horse. Know that in some states, stealing horses is considered a felony. If your horse is stolen your first step is to make a police or sheriff report. Most cases of stolen horses are considered civil by law enforcement. There are lots of animal and horse organizations that will help you. Usually it is not the establishment -police, sheriffs etc.- that will find your beloved horse but concerned citizens and horse organization that will help you the most. Most horse people know the pain and anguish you are going through because to them it is like stealing a family member.. Here are some things to consider when selling or buying a horse. Make sure you get a BILL OF SALE with the horse and that the horse you are buying is legally theirs to sell. If the horse has a brand, you will also need a brand release and transfer from the owner. You can take steps so that you are not a victim and they are as follows: 1.Stolen Horse International (www. netposse.com) is a powerful organization that knows what to do and gets the word and fliers out about stolen horses. In their book, "Horse Theft" they give good ideas and and organizations to contact. They recommend making sure your fences are in good repair, and and organizations to contact. They recommend making sure your fences are in good repair, gates locked and security lights on around barn. Network with your neighbors and have them call you if they see any suspicious people 2. Consider tattooing, branding or micro-chipping your horse for easier identification. A horse with a brand can be traced to its owner. Also it is less likely to go through an auction or slaughter house as a branded horse has to have the accompanying paper work to go with it. 3. Take photographs of your horse close up and even at different times of the year. Note swirls on forehead or neck, stockings, blemishes, coat patterns or other identifying marks that make your horse stand out and unique. 4. If you board your horse out, get references and know the person with whom you are entering into a contract. If you are boarding your horse make sure your horses are being fed and well taken care of. Make sure any modification or changes in board agreement are in writing. Verbal agreements are hard to prove. Written communication keeps everything spelled out and clear. tion keeps everything spelled out and clear. 5 When you sell a horse, make sure you have a good legal contract that states the terms of the sale explicitly. Besides a date, signature, and phone number get license plate numbers as people move around. You may want to even check out where the horse is going so that you know it's a reputable home or boarding facility. The public should also be aware of people that there are "Hoarders" which are people that accumulate animals beyond which they can care for. They often live in squalor and clutter and with a packrat 17

mentality. Hoarders can range from mild to severe. Recognize this when you see people with large number of animals that you know that do not have the means financially to take care of them properly. This is a disease marked by obsessive need to acquire a significant number of animals. When you see abused animals living in crowded unsanitary conditions, report this not only to the sheriff but also to competent horse people who will know what to do and will follow through contacting rescue organizations. Remember it is the people, the citizens that usually make the difference. Be more aware of animal abuse and report it to the sheriff if it seems warranted and to other concerned animal advocates who will know what to do and who to contact.. The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way it treats it's animals" ~Mohandas Gandhi Cheryl Palmer Bigfork, Montana You know You Are A Horse-Person When... Your horse's hair is in better condition than your own. You cluck to your car when y ou go up a hill. You have the vet's number but not your kid's pediatrician on your speed dial. Davis who came to Cochise County, Arizona from Texas in In 1906, he purchased the Sandy Bob Ranch, which has belonged to Sandy Bob Crouch of Stage Coach fame, and in 1916 Mr. Davis built the present 47 Ranch Headquarters five miles west of the town of McNeal, Arizona. His sons, Clarence Davis of McNeal and Houston Davis of Tombstone, were born, raised and presently live and operate the ranch today. Clarence and Houston have worked hard to keep the 150 section ranch producing top Appaloosa ranch horses and commercial Hereford cattle. For the people who don't know the vastness of the Southwest country, a section is one mile long and one mile wide. You can imagine the kind of horses you need to cover this much mountainous country. I asked the Davis brothers how long it takes to gather the brood mares. They answered, "Using four good cowboys, a lot of luck and hard riding, about two days." The ranch is located in historic country, about 18 miles southeast of the famed Cochise stronghold. It is bordered on the west by the famed McLaury ranch of "Shoot out at the OK Corral" fame. This was one of the reasons Clarence and Houston stayed with the Appaloosa horses through the years. Pancho was used on the ranch till his death in Spot, one of the very few colts not gelded, was by Pancho and out of a Morgan mare. Born a solid bay, Spot started to change as a yearling and by the age of 3 there was the same loud beautiful color as his sire. 21 UTAH COMANCHE, back home the winter after his South Dakota visit. When 20 Mares Couldn t See Him Utah Comanche Visits South Dakota By Gene Carr How does one obtain a nationally-known stallion to breed to his mares? This question can only be answered by reviewing the following order of events. It started when I was a graduate student at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Having to leave my Appaloosas at home under the care of a friend, I was for the first time in many years without a horse. To compensate for the void, I attended every horse show, regardless of breed, in the Salt Lake Valley. In the fall of 1963, while at - tending the Golden Spike Appaloosa Show, I was overwhelmed by being able to observe such well-known horses as: Absarokee Sunset, Absarokee Sun, Tom Dooley A., Patchy Jr., and Sass Thomas. While walking down one of the aisles between the stalls, I remember a sorrel yearling Appaloosa stallion that was one of the best that I had ever seen. I also remember a comment from the sideline that the father and son who owned. the horse had searched the country looking for this Mansfield's Comanche-bred stallion. That was my first contact with Utah Comanche. Some months later while reading the March, 1964, issue of the Appaloosa News, I saw an advertisement showing the pedigree of Utah Comanche. The ad requested further pedigree information so I wrote to Joseph Sweat who lived in Midvale, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City, and told him of some information I had encountered in my own pedigree studies. A few days later I received a telephone call from Joseph Sweat thanking me for the information and asking me if I would like to 21 ride to Don Oberg's training arena about 70 miles south of Salt Lake City and see Utah Comanche. Being an amateur home movie addict, I loaded up with film to record one of my most memorable experiences in Utah. Arriving at Don Oberg's arena, I viewed Utah Comanche with great awe. Comanche looked like a well-developed 3-yearold stal lion rather than one that had just turned two years of age. Here was the product of generations of Appaloosa to Appaloosa matings (having over 60 Appaloosa ancestors) that produced a modern, middle-of-the road, do anything, type horse. Elvin Blevins, breeder of Utah Comanche, proved that he is a mas ter breeder, for Comanche has symmetry, balance, and conformation making any admirer of fine horses recognize the potential of him as an outstanding individual and potential sire. The time swiftly passed and soon I had completed the requirements for graduate study and it was time for my family and myself to head for Dell Rapids, S. Dak., to pick up the life we had left behind. Upon part ing, Joe and I had made arrangements for me to bring two mares to the court of Utah Comanche in Upon arriving at South Dakota I visited saddle clubs and any place where I could show the movie films of the Appaloosas in Utah. Always there was a fond memory when I came to the film on Utah Comanche. I would extol his vi r- tues to any within the sound of my voice until I am sure that I seemed one-horse minded to some. It was a sad person who had to inform Joe that the South Dakota mares would not be able to visit Comanche. Joe quickly turned the sad tide of events into ecstasy by saying that he might be able to bring Utah Comanche to

South Dakota the following year after the 1966 breeding was completed in Utah. Having unknowingly laid the ground work for such an undertaking by showing the movie film on Utah Comanche, it was only a short time before there were twenty mares waiting for him if we could only get him out here. I wrote to Joe, offered him my home, my barns, my corrals, my pastures, and guaranteed him twenty mares to breed if he would just bring Comanche out. The proposition was accepted, then all I had to do was collect the booking fees. The breeder made that easy. The twenty booking fees were collected and we had to close the book well before Christmas of Since I didn't want just any mare bred to Utah Comanche, only top producing mares or maiden mares of merit were booked. Appaloosa, Thoroughbred, and Quarter mares were accepted from all over South Dakota and Minnesota. The furtherest one was about 350 miles away. Such a transaction involving myself as a middle man with the parties on either end not knowing one another left apprehension for all concerned. Joe did not know if the mares were of the quality that he wanted serviced by Utah Comanche or how the mare owners would accept a person and horse that they had only seen in 8mm movies and advertised in the Appaloosa News. The mare owners did not know if Utah Comanche would complement their mares or if the stallion would be as good as that braggard, Gene Carr, claimed the horse to be. Finally the time came for the commencement of Utah Comanche's visit to South Dakota Joe, his wife Annette, daughter Bonnie, and father Melven, set out to, meet the South Dakota A portrait of UTAH COMANCHE by Appaloosa artist, Betty Marble. Appaloosa people. The first encounter being at the Center of the Nation Annual Club Show at Hot Springs, S. Dak. Although they were unable to leave Salt Lake in time to participate in our show, it was on the route and made a good rendezvous point. After two years of planning Utah Comanche blood was finally to arrive in South Dakota. Throughout the show I anticipated the arrival of Comanche. The whole day passed and he didn't come. Towards evening, feeling dejected and depressed, I was walking toward the barn when a car came up from behind and someone tugged on my shirt and said, "Hi, fellow!" There smiling amidst a heavily loaded Chevy with a horse trailer behind Joe Sweat with Utah Comanche. They hadn't had any trouble they were just a long way from home. There was anxiety and apprehension on the part of Joe and myself wondering how the people who had bookings to Utah Comanche would react on seeing the stallion. The needless fears were swept away when literally everyone who saw him said that he was better than I had described him. For the next few weeks it seemed like a mass exodus from all around the country to the Santee Appaloosa Ranch. The purpose: to see this Utah Comanche. Living and working with Joe and MeIven Sweat while they serviced the mares developed a fast mutual trust and confidence between us. I was honored when they left Utah Comanche in my care for a few weeks to service any mares that might come back in heat. Being proud of the privilege of having Ut ah Comanche at the Santee Appaloosa Ranch, I asked for Joe's permission to show Utah Comanche at three Appaloosa shows. At this time I was showing Bob Wire, a two year-old stallion that was doing well at halter having won the C. O. N. high point stallion for 1965 and was currently leading for The first show that Utah Comanche was exhibited at was the Brookings, S. Dak., All- Breed Horse Show. Utah Comanche, in a large aged stallion class, was first, and Bob Wire won the two-year-old class. In the Grand Champion Stallion class, a friend, Harvey Kinghagen showed Bob Wire while I showed Utah Comanche. Comanche was awarded Grand Champion with Bob Wire receiving the Reserve Championship. This was a once-in-alifetime occasion, winning both the Grand and Reserve Stallion Championships at one show! The following weekend at the Sioux Empire Appaloosa Shaw at Sioux Falls, S. Dak., we did well again with Utah Comanche placing second in the Aged Stallion Class behind the Midwestern performance and halter champion, Black Walnut's First, and Bob Wire winning his class. In the Grand Champion Stallion class, Utah Comanche received the Reserve Stallion Championship. Soon it was time far Utah Comanche to return to the Open Star Ranch in Utah. Joe and I were to meet at the Ft. Meade All-Breed Show in the 22

Black Hills. Joe, his father Melven, a friend, Scott Hendricks, and Utah Comanche's 1966 son, Royal Star, met us at the picturesque and historic Ft. Meade Military Reservation, Seeing Royal Star for the first time presented a premonition of the foals to be foaled in Royal Star is a black with a large blanket covered with black spots and just as regal as his name implies. In the 1966 stallion class against some of the top colts from several states, Royal Star placed first and was awarded Junior Reserve Grand Champion. When the time came for the Aged Stallion class, Joe handed the leadstrap of Utah Comanche to me for the last time. It was a large class with many horses that Utah Comanche had not shown against. This was the toughest class that I had shown him in. But soon I was relieved as the judge placed us in the first place position. Next came the Grand Champion Stallion class so I regretfully handed Utah Comanche to Joe as I had to show Bob Wire since he had placed first in his class also. It was a dual between friends to see who would get the coveted Grand Champion Trophy. The judge, after deliberation, pulled both Utah Comanche and Bob Wire to the front of the class. For minutes that seemed like an eternity, the judge studied both horses and then gave the nod to Utah Comanche for Grand Champion Stallion. It was well worth all our efforts to obtain such a good, nationally known stallion for our mares. However, the end is yet to come for there is much friendly discussion among those who bred to Utah Comanche as to whose colts and fillies will be the best. UTAH COMANCHE 37,636 We purchased Utah Comanche because he is an exceptional individual. By a misunderstanding his pedigree was published with some errors in it. This prompted an extensive search into his pedigree. From this research we discovered what made him an exceptional individual, he carries the blood of many of the all-time great Thoroughbreds and Quarter horses as well as the best Appaloosas. We received a great amount of fan mail and aid from all over the U.S.A. Our sincere thanks to the following people and organizations for helping with the pedigree, (plus pictures, articles, race data, and other refe r- ences): The Appaloosa Horse Club, Mansfield Comanche Breeders Assn., Colorado Ranger Horse Assn.. Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Blevins, Okla.. Gene Carr, South Dakota, King K. Kearns, Conn., Mrs. Suzie Williams, Texas. Sharon Seeling, Minn., and the ones we missed. For those interested in Appaloosas: Utah Comanche offers a tremendous concentration of top Appaloosa blood. We know of over 60 Appaloosa ancestors. We have pictures and descriptions of most of them. We are trying to get the rest. We are most pleased with the 19 foundation registered Appaloosas he traces to. Included is the immortal Mansfield Comanche twice and twice to Rainy Moon, who is a legend. Most ofthem are loud colored, including many leopards. This type of breeding will help any horse program. Hahn Hoya was born tentative, but both parents and three of his grandparents were Appaloosas. Hahn Hoya has never sired a colt not eligible for re g- istration. His colts have proven to be exceptional to handle and teach. We OPEN STAR RANCH 23 He is Built! recommend Hahn Hoya if you want a teachable colt. For those interested in racing: Utah Comanche offers the blood of Ben Brush, (winner of the 22nd Kentucky Derby). Sweep (winner of several hundred thousand dollars), Joe 'rom (raced four years and believed to have been beaten only by Sho Fly), Kiowa Brave F~324 (#4 in both sire of winners in 1963 and sire of money won in 1963). Double Six Domino F- 2646, (#5 in leading sires of money won in 1963). Other all time great ~ running horses include Peter McCue, Little Joe and Traveler. three times each. Domino, Joe Hancock, Texas Jack, John Wilkins and Pancho Villa (a full brother to Zantanon). This type of breeding will help any horse program. Our senior stallion, Hahn Hoya. is fair at racing. He won the 1963 Utah Regional ~~ mile stock saddle race, he won the 1964 Utah Fun Day ~~ mile stock saddle race and ran second in the 1964 Utah Re gional 660 yd. race. This last race was under tack, out of a gate and carrying 150 lbs. of dumb jockey against 115 lbs. on the winner. Utah Comanche had not been run until Feb. of this year. We matched him against Hahn Hoya. Three different times he outran Hahn Hoya with a good margin each time. Thus he has earned his chance at the gate. This kind of speed can he lp your horse program. For those interested in performance: Utah Comanche was broke and started in 1964 by the excellent professional trainer. Don Oberg. Don rode Utah Comanche at the 1964 Utah Regional Show in May. He won 1st in Western Pleasure and 4th in Reining. Utah Comanche was 25 months old. Right after the Regional. Utah Comanche became sick and we retired him for the 1964 show season. He feels excellent now and we will work him hard this year. Both stallions are easily taught and have excellent dispositions. Disposition and teachability make the diffe r- ence between a pleausre horse and a chore horse. They are a must in a 1965 STUD FEES Utah Comanche $150 Hahn Hoya. $100 Appaloosa News~April, 1965

SELLING OUT Posted on Saturday, December 19, :51 pm on the FAHR Message Board: Q: I was looking at the June, July September issue of the FAHR news letter and see the horse Sherwoodsremembrance #853 goes back to Plaudette Three Times. Two times from his Sire and One time from his Dam. BOTH FAHR REG. Is FAHR selling out? A: Hi Karen, Thanks for posting. Bright Eyes Brother, High Hand, Hands up, Toby I, Red Eagle were all F # horses. Today and as in the past horses who are descendants of the 4932 F # horses may be registered with the Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry as long as applicant horse meets the current Registration Requirements, Eligibility Requirements, Registration Rules and Regulations. FAHR believes in the Appaloosa as a breed and the integrity of the breeder. We are here to preserve and promote the Appaloosa of foundation breeding. As each breeder is an individual, we do not dictate the type or Appaloosa bloodline a breeder can use in his program. We do not influence anyone on how to breed their horses; we try to offer to our member s educational material and articles in order to help guide them in the direction they follow. Everyone is free to choose the path they take. Read Palmer Wagner's book "The American Appaloosa Anthology" for more of an insight on the horses who make up the breed known as the Appaloosa, the politics, policies, affairs, long term decisions, and ill-considered actions of the parent organization. It is not the Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry who sold out the breed of horse known as the Appaloosa. Where in this world can man find nobility without pride, friendship without envy, beauty without vanity? Here, where grace is laced with muscle, and strength by gentleness confined. He serves without servility; he has fought without enmity. There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent; there is nothing so quick, nothing so patient. His past has been borne on his back. All our history is his industry: we are his heirs, he is our inheritance. The Horse! - Robert Duncan's "Tribute to the Horse" John Hess FAHR President **************************************** TRANSFER PROBLEMS I bought a FAHR registered horse but the seller did not give me his registration papers what do I do? This question will be answered by a former registrar Arita Harwood. 25 Generally speaking with most registries when a horse is registered, the registration certificate is issued to the person registering the horse. The certificate belongs to the association, and they have the right to revoke or require its return for sufficient cause. Whenever a horse is sold, the certificate is returned to the association along with a completed transfer form showing the date of sale, name and contact information for the buyer. The association then records the change of ownership on the certificate and in their records, and mails the certificate directly to the new owner. What must be done is to trace back all the owners until you find the last owner recorded on the certificate. Once you reach this point, transfer reports should be obtained from each previous owner up to and including the person who is selling the horse to you. As in the above example with FAHR the exact procedure to follow will be up to former registrar Arita Harwood. My opinion on what to be done is something like this. To issue a lost or duplicate certificate after all reasonable efforts to obtain the original certificate from the former owner need following items, properly completed and signed transfer report, signed statement from current owner describing efforts to obtain certificate, photographs of horse, required fee for duplicate certificate and required fee for each owner transfer.
