Final Zone Instructors Report - Greg Hair Members of the East Gippsland Zone of Pony Clubs: I must advise you that I have resigned as EGZ chief instructor. As most of you would be aware PCAV State Council in their wisdom have opened pony club up to adult riding members. While I am personally opposed to this move, the reason for my resignation as Zone Chief Instructor is to voice my protest to the ad hoc and undemocratic way in which Council introduced this motion that will change the ethos of pony club. My letter of resignation is being used by other members of the Chief Instructors Panel to highlight to their respective zones the fall out of the Council s actions. As this will be my last ZCI report I will cover a number of topics in point form. ** I would like to congratulate the clubs within our zone that have shown the initiative to run, and those that plan to run, dressage competitions. I feel that these extra events not only add diversity to the competition our zone offers, but it also sends a message to the younger riders that you do not have to compete in horse trials or show jumping to enjoy horse riding (who said there is also camp drafting??!!). **The DCI/ZA panel has established four technical delegate positions for the zone. The aim of establishing these 4 positions is to spread the work load of staying abreast of PCAV rules. The technical delegates appointed for 2012 are: Games: Jan Bromwich Dressage: Bev Milner Showjumping: Jim Brown Horse Trials: Matt Gault **The organisation of the 2012 squad series is well underway, with all the applicants receiving the squad list for The groupings and schedule for the first squad will be sent to all the riders shortly. It is my belief that squad is a platform that can deliver multiple benefits to the zone. The first two functions of rider tuition and adult clinics are well understood and keenly attended. However a third function of spectator tuition was not fully developed last year. The practise is common place in EA and commercially run clinics, where there is an invitation for the public to be involved as a spectator. Many take up this offer as a lot can be learnt by watching from the side lines. In this context we would like to give an open invitation to all zone members to come, look, listen and learn on any of the squad weekends. ** I would like to thank Linda Bennison from the Rosedale PC for taking the initiative to re-establish the EGZ newsletter. This I feel has been a great tool to help build zone spirit, (more spirit, more fun!) **There is one complement that was bestowed upon our zone by the other CIP members that I must pass on, that being, they are envious of a zone that not only has the foresight to own equipment that can be hired by the member clubs, but also provides this service without arguments. **During my time as the ZCI I have been impressed by all of the unseen hard work that many adult supporters give to the pony club movement, whether it be as Zone executive, DCI/ZA panel, Zone Rep or Club official. They all give their time so the kids can enjoy their pony club journey. **The DCI/ZA panel has endorsed Gabe Carolyn as my replacement. I wish Gabe well in her new role, and I am confident her experience and cordial nature will allow her to competently serve the needs of the zone. I have enjoyed my role as ZCI, and feel privileged to have had an opportunity to give something back to the association that gave a lot to me as a child.

Zone Representative Report - Matt Gault Treasurers Report - Peter Favalaro It has been an interesting time for PCAV. At the last meeting there was great debate around the proposed new adult riding member category. A motion was then put forward and was passed with our zone being the only zone to vote against it. Some of the problems associated with this proposal are that it was not a clearly defined category. The second major problem was the lack of consultation with the general pony club membership. Both these issues are going to cause some debate right around the state over the coming months. I'd like to remind clubs that they need to forward their show/gymkhana, whatever event programs and list of judges to me well in advance of their events. This is a requirement to ensure everything is ticked off for insurance purposes. I would like to remind competitors for the upcoming Grade 3 & 4 Zone challenge event. This is a team horse trial event where teams from across our zone compete against teams from across the state. This year the event will be held at Yarrambat. If you would like more info check the website. The PCAV state horse trials were on last week. It was disappointing that East Gippsland didn t have any riders competing. Hopefully with all the squad work being done with some of our older riders we can rectify this next year. One last note PCAV turns 60 in any thoughts or ideas on celebrations? (50 years was missed) Hopefully this hasn t gone too long and the next few months will see some clarity from state council over adult riding members and their general governance procedures. A summary of the Treasurers Report is tabled below. The General Account has $ and the Investment Account has $ The final report for the showjumping and dressage day was tabled with receipts of $4037, payments of $ resulting in a surplus of $ State Games, Flat Team & Musical Ride Results Congratulations to our riders that competed at the State Championships at Bacchus Marsh. In the Games our teams placed as follows; Bairnsdale 6th Nowa Nowa 7th Orbost 8th With the Flat Team Bairnsdale 1st Orbost 7th In the Musical Ride placings were Briagalong 3rd Orbost 7th Stories and photos will be in the next issue.

Judging etiquette explained There has been some confusion lately in the show ring at our gymkhanas with regard to judging etiquette. PCAV has a conflict of interest rule for Dressage but no known ruling for showing, therefore, PCAV adopt the rules of EA which are as follows A Competitor/Exhibitor may not exhibit before a judge if: the Competitor/Exhibitor is a member of the Judge s family the Competitor/Exhibitor has represented the Judge or competed on a horse owned by the judge within the previous six months the horse or any horse was owned or leased within the last twelve months by: o the Judge o any member of the Judge s family, o the Judge s employer, employee or business partner the Competitor/Exhibitor or his family has provided accommodation for the Judge within two weeks prior to or during the show the Judge or his business partner provided privately arranged tuition to the horse or competitor/exhibitor in the last 6 months (not including open clinics) the Competitor/Exhibitor has given privately arranged tuition to the Judge or trained a horse owned or leased by the Judge, within the last six months (not including open clinics) the Competitor/Exhibitor has is employed, has been employed by or has been a business partner of the Judge within the last twelve months A Judge shall not visit the horse lines or the exhibitors, nor inspect or discuss any horse entered in the show for the duration of the show, except where permitted by rule below No person shall approach a Judge for the duration of the show unless they first obtain permission from the Show Convener, Ring Master or Ring Steward. A competitor seeking the opinion of a Judge must do so under the supervision of a Steward. Therefore it would be in every clubs interest to try and engage judges who are not locals. I know this sometimes can be difficult but to avoid any discontent clubs need to be prepared to pay judges for their time and travel. Where possible judges need to be advertised on the program, if not, be prepared for competitor enquiries. Gabrielle Carrolan EGZ Chief Instructor

Horse TRY-als for inexperienced eventers Rosedale Pony Club will be running a Horse TRY-als event before their horse trial competition. The Horse TRY-als are for novice and inexperienced grade 4 and 5 riders and is designed to provide a safe and encouraging training activity in the three phases of horse trial competition; dressage, show-jumping and cross country. The event is non-scoring with all competitors receiving positive feedback by means of their dressage test immediately after completing the test and a show-jumping comment sheet. Competitors completing all three phases and the associated gear and vet checks will receive a Rosedale Horse Try-als participant sash. The aim is to provide riders with an opportunity to gain experience and confidence in a friendly supportive environment. With experience and confidence these riders may progress to competing safely in a PC horse trial event. Rules Dressage test - can be called if desired and the dressage test result sheet is provided upon completion of the test. Riders will not be eliminated for course errors or unscheduled departure from the arena. Show-jumping - encouragement can be given and helpers will be available on the course to provide assistance. Result sheet with time and faults per jump (identifying jump type) and positive comments will be provided after the showjumping round. Cross country - assistance can be given and helpers will be available on the course. Please bennisons@gmail.com if you would like further information and a registration form. This event is for beginners and inexperienced riders in horse trial events. Pony Clubs are welcome to register a group of their junior riders and have them compete together to encourage club spirit.

TIPS ON TURNOUT Smartest On Parade or Best Presented can be a nightmare for some riders. Others like myself get a lot of pleasure presenting the horse to the best of my ability. Below are some tips that may help you in your next competition This class should be judged on cleanliness of the horse, rider and correct fit of equipment, not what brand of saddle is on the horse. To keep the horse s coat clean the horse needs to have clean cotton rugs at all times; I change our cotton rugs twice a week and they are washed in an old washing machine used just for horse items. The day before a competition, we clip the horses whiskers, ears, bridle path and if the horse has white socks we clip them out as well. We wash the horse thoroughly all over. Before plaiting, the horse s mane needs to be short and if thick, pulled. If a horse is plaited the English way, the plaits are sewn in either with matching wool or very heavy cotton; thick embroidery needles with blunt ends can be bought from Spotlight for this task. The horses tail is important and often a judge looks at it closely to see if it is clean. Wash the tail really well to make sure there is no dandruff near the dock. You can use hair dye to hide that bleached look on black tails. We use a product called Just For Men available from most supermarkets; it only needs to be on the tail for five minutes and leaves the tail shiny and healthy looking. A false tail can give the horse a better shape and finish. We plait the false tail in when we get to the show. To keep the horse clean overnight use clean rugs including a hood and tail bag. The saddle should be cleaned especially the girth points. Check your stirrup leathers for any stitching faults. White stirrup rubbers as well as a white girth can look smart. The saddle cloth should be clean and as hair free as possible; the vacuum cleaner is a great tool for getting hair off. The bridle should be clean, well-fitting and the bit should not have grass or feed stuck on it Make sure all your straps are in their keepers. Photo by Gabe Carrolan Now for the rider, gloves should be cream in colour and if possible matching the jodhpurs. Boots should be clean especially check your soles. Helmet chin strap should be firm and your hair tied back into some sort of bun or plait; a hair net will help any loose ends. If you wear jodhpur boots use jodhpur clips. There are other extra bits and pieces that can help with presentation; a hacking cane, checkers and sharks teeth pattern on hind quarters, hoof black, white cover cream on clipped out socks, raven oil on hocks, knees and black points to hide any bleached hair, Black makeup around eyes and muzzle and in the clipped out ears, and a small amount of gloss on eye lids and muzzle. A browband matching your club colors always looks nice as well. Rebecca Carrolan Bushy Park Pony Club
