2 DC Corner with Carol Jeffs Well, Spring is here which means longer, warmer days just right for more riding. Laminitis Founder Spring is also the time for laminitis (founder), usually in smaller ponies but can affect any horse. The sugar content of grass is the problem, so we need to be really careful in Spring where we have lots of new growth, especially if you have one of those ponies who just doesn t know when to stop. This year could be particularly bad for laminitis because all of the rain combined with warmer weather will result in lots of spring growth think about locking your ponies up NOW. Also something to watch out for following so much rain is hoof problems such as seedy toe, greasy heal and hoof abscesses hoof bugs just love moist, warm conditions!! Events Our Showjumping and Games day is coming up on 3 October would be great to see lots of Traralgon Pony Club riders there having lots of fun. Good wishes go to those people who will be off competing at horse trials, shows and gymkhanas over the next few months. We have some new members coming on board that is great news!! I hope you make them and their parents feel really welcome and help them get to know how pony club works. Rallies The September rally will feature a demonstration by Wrangler Jayne. Jayne specialises in natural horsemanship and hosts lots of clinics and sessions at her property in Yarra Glen. The demonstration will be at 10am sharp, so all riders will be unmounted for the first hour of the rally. I encourage all riders and parents to listen with an open mind! The other feature of the September rally will be practicing jumping and games before our big day in October. October Rally will be at the pony club grounds as per usual. November rally will be a special trail ride more details to come. Wow, how fast the year is flying. It is important to remember that our wonderful instructors give up their time to ensure all members have a safe, enjoyable time and learn important aspects of horsemastership. Can we please do our best to be lined up for gear check at 9.40am on a rally day so that lessons can begin at 10am sharp. I also ask that all riders show their instructors respect by listening to them and by thanking them for the lesson when finished. Can parents please have a chat with your children and reinforce why this is important all riders will get the most opportunities to have a go and get the most out of a lesson if they listen, and do as they are asked. It is also important for all riders to be sitting properly and safely on their horses during a lesson. Accidents often happen when we are just not paying attention. School Holiday Clinic A one day clinic will be held on FRIDAY 24 SEPTEMBER 4 x 1 hour lessons, $20 for the day for Traralgon Pony Club riders, $60 for the day for other pony club riders. Group sizes limited to 6 per group, maximum of 2 groups. We have two fantastic instructors: - Andy Rouget - Robin Lang Flyer will be sent out separately. That s all for now.
