1 THE SOUTH AFRICAN MINIATURE HORSE BREEDERS SOCIETY NEWSLETTER 3/ DIE DWERG-GEEN BY MINIATUURPERDJIES Op die oomblik is die dwerg-geen by Miniatuurperde die onderwerp van bespreking onder die meeste telers. Die doel van hierdie artikel is om telers in te lig deur die genetiese aspekte van teling met die dwerg-geen in eenvoudige taal en met behulp van tabelle te illustreer. Die volgende uitreksel uit n artikel het in die tydskrif, Veeplaas, in Augustus 2017 verskyn: Miniatuurperde is deur n proses van inteling van meer as 350 jaar geselekteer vir hul grootte. Sulke veredeling lei gewoonlik tot n hoër voorkoms van een of meer genetiese probleme. Die algemeenste genetiese siekte wat by miniatuurperde voorkom, is dwergisme. Hierdie genetiese eienskap word as ongewens geag by miniatuurperde, aangesien die toestand tot verskeie probleme lei, waaronder verkeerde konformasie en ander gesondheidsprobleme. Dwergisme by minituurperde is n resessiewe genetiese toestand en word deur mutasies in die ACAN-geen veroorsaak. Vier verskillende mutasies in die ACAN-geen veroorsaak dwergisme en/of aborsies. Hierde vier mutasies staan bekend as die D1-, D2-, D3- en D4-mutasies. Die D1-mutasie is dodelik in kombinasie van enige van die ander drie mutasies. Enige kombinasie van die ander drie mutasies (D2, D3 en D4) teel dwerg Miniatuurperde. Miniatuurperd-telers moet dus liefs nie twee perde wat draers (heterosigote) is van enige mutasie in die ACAN-geen paar nie. (Deur dr Munro Marx, Unistel Geneeskundige Laboratoriums) To understand the dwarf-gene, we are first going to look at a few basic genetic facts: An individual s total genetic make-up is known as his genotype (genotipe). This is what he carries in each cell, and what he can pass on to his off-spring. The genotype cannot be completely judged from the horse s outward appearance. The visible and measurable characteristics of and individual are known as his phenotype (fenotipe). The genotype is thus the horse s genetic inheritance and the phenotype his outward appearance. Each gene occupies a fixed position, or locus, on a chromosome. Since two similar chromosomes form a pair, there is also a pair of genes for each trait carried by the horse, with one gene located on each chromosome at the same position, or locus. Half of the offspring s chromosomes are from his sire and half are from his dam. (Equine Genetics & Selection Procedures - Equine Research Publications) 1

2 A carrier of one dwarf gene and one normal gene may look completely normal, but will still be able to pass the dwarf gene on to its offspring. The next figure shows the possible genes that can be passed on from two horses, one male and one female, both carriers (carrying one normal gene and one dwarf-gene): From the above it can be clearly seen that a breeder has a 25% chance of breeding a normal foal (that carries two normal genes); 50% chance to breed a foal that is a carrier (that carries one normal and one dwarf gene) and 25% chance of breeding a dwarf foal (that carries two dwarf genes)/or the foal can be dead. The breeder has of course no say in this, these are the facts. As said in the first part of this article, there are four different mutations in the ACAN gene that produce dwarfs, that can be carried by miniature horses. They are called D1, D2, D3 and D4. A Miniature horse can of course also be a carrier of one or two normal genes. Most responsible breeders know what a dwarf looks like and would prefer not to breed one. Obviously any breeder would prefer a live foal to a dead foal. This is possible if the breeder knows the dwarf status of the horses in his stud. In this way he can manage the dwarf gene if present. The next chart shows all the possibilities when breeding Normal and Carriers of the dwarf gene. Please note that N stands for Normal (Normaal), D for Carrier (Draer). The green blocks indicate a normal horse, yellow a carrier, red a dwarf and black indicates a dead foal, either aborted, resorbed or born dead. Daar was soos gewoonlik oorweldigende belangstelling in die ras en mense van oral oor het inligting gesoek en baie vrae is gevra. Die hoogtepunt was wanneer daar met die perde deur die uitstal-terrein gestap is. Dit het almal wat dalk nog nie die stalletjie besoek het nie van die SA Miniatuurperde bewus gemaak. Die vulletjie wat net saam met die merrie rond gehardloop het, het gesorg vir baie pret tussen die besoekers. Die inspan van die karretjie het ook baie mense gaande gehad. Agri Mega is en bly een van die beste vertoonvensters vir ons ras in die Wes-Kaap Die foto s gee n blik op wat by die stalletjie aangebied is en plaasgevind het. Baie dankie aan Tertius en Alida le Roux van Paddavlei Miniatuurperdjies wat verantwoordelik was vir die stalletjie en n reuse bydra tot die bemarking van die ras gemaak het. 4

Parys show is thus the first show that counts towards next year s awards. Gauteng Champs This scoring runs from 1 January to 30 December of every year. This would mean that Parys show is the last show counting towards this award. Champion of Champions This award has no time limit, it runs from the day a horse is entered in his first show until the day he/she stops showing. 7

In Memoriam: ds JHS van der Walt: 8 Februarie September 2017 Oom Hannes was sy lewe lank n perdemens en het al as kind perde ingebreek en geleer. Hy het vir baie jare die Waltstroom Arabierperdstoet besit en veral suiwer Egiptiese perde geteel. Ongeveer vier jaar gelede het hy sy eerste miniatuurperdjies gekoop.
