RECENT EVENT: DREAM CARS TOUR: Reprint from August Saturday morning twenty-three people assembled at the Lindquist home on a clear morning for the tour. The group left in twelve cars at 9:00 A.M. and drove down Peachtree Rd. and Peachtree St. to the High Museum of Art at 15 th St. and Peachtree. The cars were parked in front of Symphony Hall in the designated area where the cars would get the most exposure to those people walking in the area. The group met up with those members who drove directly to the location and then walked over to the Museum. We were met by a museum representative who provided the badges and divided the thirty-four people into three groups who then met with their guides for the tour. The each guide took their group to the second floor display area. Each guide then provided background information about the origin and development of the cars. These cars were concept vehicles to test design ideas to determiner the public s interest in the designs. Among the cars were the 1940 Chrysler Thunderbolt, the 1951 GM La Sabre, the GM 1954 Thunderbird I, the 1934 Edsel Ford two place personal car, the 1936 Stout Scarab, the 1935 Bugatti coupe, and a recent BMW fabric covered frame roadster. Each of the cars displayed pushed the design envelope with ideas that were later incorporated into production vehicles. There was documentation for each vehicle that provided details of design concept and the ideas that were later incorporated into the cars we know. It was truly an outstanding display of vehicles. The group drove to the Landmark Diner for lunch after leaving the museum. The restaurant staff was waiting for the group of thirty-two who were then seated. Everyone enjoyed their lunch and especially the desserts. No one left the restaurant hungry when they departed for home. Photos click Page 4 Fred Lindquist

3 The Ford Running Board September 2014 Page 3 DO YOU KNOW...?... Don Morris? Don is a Southern Country Gentleman residing in a beautiful 1850 s style farm house in rural Woodstock. His Irish grandfather, James Donnelly Fagan, joined an artillery battalion of the 9th Georgia Regiment at the outbreak of the Civil War and served until the end. After mustering out at Appomattox Courthouse in 1865, he walked back to Georgia. Don painted a portrait of his grandfather as an older, stately man with long flowing white beard and hair, properly attired in a grey suit and wearing a dress hat. You see, Don has two interests - art and cars. Perhaps, I am getting out-front of the story. Don is a native of Fulton County, born in He will celebrate his 87th birthday in October. He graduated from West Fulton High school in 1944 and attended Georgia Tech to study architecture. Don left college to work as an illustrator at Atlanta Ordinance Depot. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1945 just as WW II was ending and spent eighteen months in Germany during the occupation. Don served as a Field Artillery Cannoneer in the 33rd Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Division. During this period Gen. Lucius Clay was the Supreme Commander of all U.S. forces in the ETO. After his military service, Don had a variety of jobs in the used car business as District Sales & Service Manager, selling dealer franchises for French auto maker Simca, as a technical illustrator for Lockheed and 20 years with Coca-Cola in the engineering department as an artist and illustrator of equipment and architectural renderings. About Coke, Don says, A wonderful job; best job I could have had. During the late 1950 s Don also studied under Roman Chatov, a well-known Russian-born, American portrait artist, residing in Atlanta. Don s interest in cars remains intense. His first car was a well-preserved 1933 Ford Fordor which he purchased in 1945 for $150! After returning from military service, Don built hot rods. His first was a 1932 Ford roadster which he channeled and souped-up the flathead. He became interested racing and attended every midget race at the Peach bowl on Brady Avenue. Don became an enthusiast of stock car and open wheel car racing. In the late 1950 s Don took up sprint car racing on dirt tracks in small Ohio towns and at Zephyr Hills in Florida. Don painted a picture of one of his wins at the Washington Courthouse, Ohio dirt track. (shown at left). Don was introduced to his future wife Betty by his sister. Don and Betty have two sons and two grandchildren. Art by Don Morris Wayne Deitrich

8 The Ford Running Board September 2014 Page 8 Outline of proposed Changes to be made to existing by-laws in the draft of June 2014: 1. Restates membership categories by a. Adding provision for spouses b. Separating "Life Members" (who have a right to vote as any member) from "Honorary Members" (who do not have a right to vote) 2. Give past presidents the right to vote in meetings of the Board of Directors 3. Eliminate the limit on terms of officers (e.g. Harold Thompson has been "Parliamentarian" since no one knows when, even though the old by-laws prohibited more than 3 terms by any officer.) 4. Give control of the Club's revenue expenditures to Board of Directors by taking away the membership's right to require the Treasurer to expend funds not in the budget. The effect is that a motion from the floor of a membership meeting to expend revenue must be approved by both a majority of the members attending the meeting and by a majority of the Board of Directors. 5. Provide that meetings of the Board of Directors shall be open for attendance by any member 6. Gives the President the right to appoint another member to preside at the annual meetings to select next year's Directors 7. Narrow the requirements of items to be included in meeting minutes by the Secretary by eliminating the need to state the names of the members who make a motion or who second a motion. 8. Require the vote of 2/3 of the members to dissolve the corporation. 9. Adds a section on Ethics to prohibit a member from receiving revenue or assets from the Club except for doing the business of the Club even upon dissolution and another paragraph allowing a member to be expelled from the Club only by the other members and not merely by the Board of Directors Click Return to: Page 5 Faron Stephens: Club Secretary

9 The Ford Running Board September 2014 Page 9 Bucky s Soapbox The Ford Running Board: Editor Lance Bucky Thank goodness we had an open discussion about the pending club s by-laws at the meeting at Faron Stephens Insurance office. There is still a point that has not been settled in my mind & I will go thru that now. 6.8 is to be deleted in its entirety and originally reads as follows: Article 6.8 The officers and directors of the club shall be subservient to these articles as adopted by the membership of the club. If we delete this article then a clarifying statement should replace it that says: The officers and directions of the club shall be eligible for recall by the club membership if their actions are not moral, exhibit financial impropriety, or have erroneous political implications in fulfilling their obligations. In my mind anything merely implied & not written down cannot be used in an impeachment proceeding. Revised bylaw 7.1 Any action taken by the membership or Board of Directors which conflicts with these By-Laws contained herein or any applicable laws may be revoked by action of a majority of the Board of Directors. This sounds & reads like only the Board of Directors will police themselves. Why can t the general club membership be allowed to participate in this activity?? 7.1 as it is now in the bylaws: Any action taken by the membership or Board of directors which conflicts with the articles contained herein or any applicable laws shall be null and void. Here again it sounds like a play on words & really needs to be written so a layman can interpret what the article is addressing Improper behavior??? The proposed By-laws will enable spouses to become voting members for a $3 membership fee. I would make a proposal that since the club s treasury is flush with monies that we reduce the regular membership fee to $10 per year. It has been said that-the current membership will not outlive the monies we have in CDs at our current budget schedule. Click Return to: Page 5
