1 Contents August 2012 President s Corner... 1 From The CEO... 1 Administration... 2 Development & Coaching 5 Competition & Officials. 6 Checklist For Centres... 8 Mailout Attachments... 8 From The Sponsors... 8 President s Corner It s hard to believe that the Summer season is about to kick off. I trust all Centres have planned their sign-on well as we do expect an influx of new registrations due to the Olympics. If any Centre needs help at all, please do not hesitate to contact the Staff in the LAQ Office. Unfortunately, I have not been able to attend any Bendigo Bank Winter Regional Championships due to work commitments and Little Athletics Australia (LAA) Board meetings. However, I will be at Rockhampton for their Regional Championships next weekend and I m looking forward to catching up with everyone. Congratulations to all athletes who have already competed at your Regionals, particularly if you have qualified for States next year. Congratulations to the athletes who have been selected to attend the inaugural U14 coaching camp in October. There was such a high demand throughout Australia that LAA put in more funding so a further 12 athletes per State could attend. This is a fantastic opportunity to go to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, and be coached by the leading coaches in Australia. I am sure all our athletes who are attending will remember it for life. Although the camp was organised by Little Athletics, it is jointly funded by both LAA and Athletics Australia. I must congratulate Charlie Sanders, the Competition and Standards Director for LAA for the time and effort put into the camp. I m sure the next Sally Pearson will come from one of these camps! Once again, good luck to all our Summer Centres for a great season, and congratulations to our Winter Centres for a season coming to an end. From The CEO Tony Northey Summer Sign On Campaign The response to our promotional campaign for the Summer sign ons has been tremendous. Many Centres have reported that their phones have been ringing off the hook with prospective members enquiring about joining Little Athletics. If the increase in phone queries through the LAQ office is anything to go by then it looks like being a big year for Little Athletics The support from the media has been fantastic. Our radio partner 97.3FM has been eager to air our advertisement at every opportunity and Shannon, Marc and I helped the Nova breakfast crew stage a Little Ashletics competition (named after Ashley Bradnam from the Nova breaky crew) against 5 of our up and coming athletes. The story aired both on the day of the competition and then the following day when the results were reported. I m pleased to say the Little A s athletes whitewashed the Nova team and did our Association proud. Ashley commented that the future of athletics in Queensland is in good hands and we tend to agree!

2 LAQ athletes with the Nova Breakfast Crew Shannon and I have also given radio interviews with ABC Radio regarding our sign ons and the likelihood of increased participation in athletics following on from Sally Pearson s success in London. Our print media partner Quest in addition to running our ads has also run a competition with the prize being free membership to a Little Athletics Centre in each of their paper catchments. It shows how popular Little Athletics is - they had over 1,500 entries. The McDonald s TV commercial is currently being aired and will run for approximately two weeks. To see the ad, click on the following link: Online Registrations The Online Registrations Working Group met earlier in the month to look at the two main options for online registration. We agreed that both programs have advantages and disadvantages but we re determined to find the system that provides the best fit for our Centres. As deliberations continue we will keep the Centres informed particularly if a new system is to be brought in so that we can allow maximum time for registrars to get used to the new system. Administration Simon Cook Little Athletics Australia U14 Camp Sixteen athletes were initially selected to attend the U14 Coaching Camp, being held at the AIS Canberra on 2 nd 4 th October. However, Little Athletics Australia has allocated an additional 12 places per State, so LAQ has now selected 28 athletes to attend the camp. Congratulations to the following athletes on their selection: Amjad Aslam (West Bundaberg) Sprints & Long Jump Emily Bass (Dirranbandi & Dist.) 3 2012 / 2013 Centre Registrations Summer As we approach the start of our Summer season, we remind all Centres to regularly send in their athlete registrations and payments. At the start of the season, where registrations are being taken rather frequently, we encourage you to send them into the LAQ Office every two (2) weeks. All registrations must be provided through Team Manager. Once Centres have exported their athlete roster from Team Manager they will need to attach it to an and send it to info@qlaa.asn.au If your Centre does not have access to the Internet the athlete roster will need to be burnt onto a CD and sent to the Association postal address. All Centres will need to complete a Registration Receipt Form when your athlete roster containing your registrations is sent into the Association. An electronic copy of the Registration Receipt Form can be found on the LAQ website under Centre Admin > Administration Forms or the Association can the form to Centres upon request. Payment for registrations can be made by cheque or direct deposit. Winter As Winter Centres near the end of their season, it s important that we have the correct registration figures for each Centre. You will find a list of current registrations that have been received by the LAQ office. If your Centre has any issues with these figures, please contact Ngaire in the LAQ office. State Team Eligibility Winter Centres The Bendigo Bank Regional Championships for all Winter Centres are taking place during August and September. We ask all Winter Centres to ensure that they complete their State Team Eligibility Forms after the competition and return them to the LAQ Office by Friday 26 th October Failure to do so may result in athletes not being considered for selection in the State Team. AGM Preparations Winter Centres As the end of the Winter season approaches, all Winter Centres should be making preparations for your AGMs. Included in this , is a guide on How to Conduct an AGM. Please refer to this document if you are unsure, or contact Shannon in the LAQ Office for further information. Winter Centre s End of Season Requirements Winter Centre s are reminded that all unused stationery from the 2012 / 2013 season needs to be returned to the LAQ Office at the end of the season. Thank you to those Centre s that have already sent their stationery to the Office. Graduation Certificates & 10 Year Athlete Participation Badges Graduation Certificates are available to all Centres on request. Order forms can be found in the Awards Booklet, or simply supply the names of the athletes in writing to the LAQ Office. Please allow at least 1 week for preparation of these certificates. Honour Certificates & Year of Service Badges A great way to recognise the hardworking volunteers at your Centre is to nominate them for an honour certificate or years of service badge. The Association offers these awards free of charge for all Centres. To be eligible for an honour certificate, members must have been involved with your Centre for a minimum of 5 years. There are a number of years of service badges available, including 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years. These certificates and badges can be ordered at any time throughout your season by completing the appropriate nomination form in the Awards Booklet and returning it to the LAQ Office. Dual Registration Procedure LAQ will be offering Dual Registration to Centres that are Dual Affiliated with Queensland Athletics. For any athlete wishing to Dual Register, Centres should follow the process outlined below. U13 to U15 Athletes U13 to U15 athletes who are registered with a Little Athletics Centre will receive free registration (QA component) with a Queensland Athletics Club. To do this the member (or their parent) can either contact a QA Club directly or register online with a QA Club by visiting the registration section of the QA website Simply tick the Dual Registration category in the online registration form. Once there, the athletes can also find more information about the QA Clubs in their area. Please note the QA Club may still charge a club fee component to cover their costs. U16 and U17 Athletes The Association will be offering free registration (LAQ Component) to the U16 and U17 athletes if they are registered with a QA Club. To do this, the athlete (or their parent) needs to show proof that they have registered with a QA Club (i.e. registration form) when they register at an LAQ Centre. The LAQ Centre may still charge a Centre fee to cover their costs. Centres must ensure that the following information is completed when submitting registrations to LAQ. 1. Registration Receipt Form: Include the dual athlete(s) in the summary of registrations table as you would normally (dual athlete(s) still need to be recorded on the LAQ database for insurance purposes, therefore your Team Manager numbers should match the numbers in this table). Also on the Registration Receipt Form, deduct the number of dual athletes in the new field provided (in the Fees 3

4 Owing inclusive of GST section). For those using the electronic version, the fee will automatically deduct from your total fees owing. 2. to our office the full name, date of birth (DOB) and QA registration number of each dual athlete being registered. Alternatively, provide this information with the Registration Receipt Form if sending by post. This information MUST be provided to ensure registration. Please ensure that this information is provided within 3 weeks of registering the athlete. Healthy Centre Tip Each month LAQ will provide Centres with a Healthy Centre Tip designed to provide information and help to your Centre. If your Centre has a tip they wish to share, please contact Shannon in the LAQ Office. Here is this month s Healthy Centre Tip: Bulk Distributions Throughout the season, Centres usually send bulk s to families with various information. When ing multiple recipients, or mailing lists, you should always use the BCC field. There are a number of reasons why, including: It is common courtesy when addressing a very long list of recipients, or a list of recipients that do not know each other It prevents an accidental Reply All from sending a reply that is intended only for the Centre and not the entire recipient list Other people may not wish for their personal address to be sent to everyone in the Centre To prevent the spread of computer viruses and spam 2013 New Zealand Development Tour Nominations are still open for the 2013 New Zealand Development Tour. The Tour will take place from 14 th 22 nd January The Tour is open to any U14, U15 or U16 athlete who will be aged 14 or 15 years as of 31 st December Selected athletes will spend 8 days training, travelling and competing together throughout the South Island of New Zealand. The cost for the Tour in 2013 is again $1,900 and athletes of any skill level are encouraged to apply. It is not necessary to be an elite athlete to take part in this Tour. Closing date for nominations is Friday 21 st September Further information and a nomination form are available on the LAQ website or by contacting Shannon in the LAQ Office. We encourage all Centres to promote this Tour to its members. LAQ Facebook Page Did you know that Little Athletics Queensland has a Facebook page? Why not go online and Like us? We would also encourage you to promote this page to your members so they too can Like our page. The page is regularly updated with information and results and is a great way for LAQ to keep in touch with its members Olympic Games The 2012 Olympic Games have been and gone and we would like to congratulate our Aussie Track & Field team on a job well done. What a fantastic opportunity - have a great time Alex! Tablelands LAC Coaching Day LAQ recently received some lovely feedback from Tablelands LAC who held a McDonald s All Comers Coaching Clinic in July. This was sent from their Secretary, Penny Goulter and we thought it was worth sharing: Thanks for organising 3 great coaches from down south to come to Tolga along with Leonie Strano (Cassowary Coast). It was fantastic and the kids were very impressed and particularly enthused to improve their favoured events. I have attached a photo that shows the whole group. Thanks once again. Athletics Australia Coaching Course Information A full description of the Athletics Coach Accreditation Framework, Accreditation Programs and Coaching Pathways can be found in an e-brochure on the Athletics Australia website. Visit: ditation_framework/ Coaches Information A commonly asked question received is where can I find coaches? There are two places you can search for coaches in your local area. On the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association website you can search for coaches by name or location. Go to: Alternatively you can use icoach on the Athletics Australia website to search for a coach in your local area. Go to: athleticsaus/coaches/search.aspx For all coaches involved in Little Athletics Centres this would be a great time to check your details on these sites. If your details are incorrect contact either the ATFCA or AA to have them amended. Level 1, 2 and 3 Coaches Courses Sports Credentials have provided LAQ with the list of remaining Track and Field Coaching Courses in 2012 for Levels 1 2 and 3. You will find this information and a nomination form enclosed with this mailout. They are also available on the Sports Credentials website. Go to: and click on the Coaching Courses tab. Little Athletics Program for Schools (LAPS) - School Visits It s an Olympic year, so why not piggyback on the enthusiasm and excitement? Here is an opportunity for LAQ to promote your Centre to your local schools. Become involved in the 2012 LAPS Program. If Centres have any schools in their area that you would like LAQ to visit, please contact Daniel in the LAQ Office. Daniel Nethery & Shaun Lethem Competition & Officials Centre Programming It appears that many Summer Centres will be experiencing an influx of new registrations. With this in mind, it would be an ideal time for Centre Program Officers to look at their Centre weekly programs and evaluate if the current programs are suitable for the expected number of registrations and possible increases. Good programming is a key element for happy athletes, Officials and parents. Centres should also bear in mind that while the season may start with a set of program rotations, alterations could be made during the season to suit the numbers of participating athletes, whether there is an increase or decrease. The Centre programming Manual is on the LAQ website and is available to assist Centres. You will find it under Centre Admin > Manuals. This manual is in the process of being updated, however it still has some relevant handy hints on how to create a program, some samples of programs and useful tools to evaluate your current Centre weekly program. If your Centre registrations have increased, you may like to consider a few changes to alleviate time and allow better programming. Here are a few hints and tips: Use the front and back straights for sprints or hurdles. Or run sprints on the outside lanes while 1500m events are run on the two (2) inside lanes (starts are coordinated so that there is no confusion). Consider having 4 events at the beginning of your season and increase this to 5 or 6 events per age group as parents become more aware of how to run the events and events are run smoother. Remember you have 26 weeks in a 30 week block to conduct your Centre season. Consider setting up grass Shot Put and Discus circles for U6 & U7 athletes. These can be created with baby powder if you need to add one quickly. A skills area could be set up and a coach on hand to take athletes through some basic starting or hurdle drills or relays changes. These activities can keep the athletes occupied while waiting for their turn at the track or field events and it s amazing how many athletes forget the basics during the off season. New athletes will also benefit. Summer Centres should be aware of and consider the Relay events and aim to have these included in the programs regularly leading into the closing dates so all athletes have Best Performances with their 6

7 nominations. Adding relays in the program can be a great way to advertise the Regional Relays and bring some awareness to new parents and athletes. If your Centre has some hints and tips to improve programs, please k.lunt@qlaa.asn.au so they can be shared Bendigo Bank Winter Regional Championships A reminder to Winter Centres in the Tropical North and Maranoa Regions that nominations for the Bendigo Bank Regional Championships will be closing at 9:00am Monday 3 rd September. Programs for these competitions are posted on the LAQ website under Competitions > Regional Competitions and Program of Events. Walks Clinics & Walk Judges Workshops The Walks Workshop (for parents) and Clinic (for athletes) will be conducted concurrently and will be free of charge for participants. We anticipate that they should be completed within 1 ½ - 2hrs. At the conclusion of the Workshops and Clinics, it is planned to conduct races so that the participating athletes have an opportunity to record a legal time and the parents have some practical judging with experienced judges. Please note that: Clinics will only be offered if a minimum of 15 participants register, Walk Judges Workshops requires a minimum of 10 participants. Each Summer Region should aim to have at least six (6) of their members attend one of these Workshops. The scheduled dates and venues for these sessions are listed below: Saturday 20 th October - 12noon Aspley Sunday 13 th January 10am Caloundra Sunday 27 th January 2pm Toowoomba South The closing date for registrations at the workshop and clinic will be: Aspley 15 th October 2012 Caloundra 7 th January 2013 Toowoomba 21 st January 2013 Competition Officials Applications forms for the 2012 / 2013 competition season due by no later than Wednesday 12 th September If you have not received an application form via or through your Centre, please visit the LAQ website or Karen in the LAQ Office k.lunt@qlaa.asn.au to request one.
