1 AMEU HIGHVELD BRANCH MINUTES OF THE 276 TH MEETING OF THE AMEU HIGHVELD BRANCH, HOSTED BY CITY POWER AT THABA YA BATSWANA, ON FRIDAY 29 AUGUST 2014 IN JOHANNESBURG. 1. OPENING - WELCOME In the absence of the Chairman Mr. Mpho Lesolle took the chair. He welcomed everyone present and thanked them for attending the meeting. He also thanked City Power for hosting the event as well as Thaba Ya Batswana for the venue. Mr. Gerrit Teunissen (City Power) welcomed everyone present and thanked the members and affiliates for attending the meeting. 2. APPROVAL OF THE PREVIOUS MINUTES The previous minutes was approved. 1

2 7. MATTERS ARISING FROM PREVIOUS MINUTES 7.1 Theft of Electrical components. Mr. Leo Velthuizen send an regarding this subject and asked if it could again be discussed at the meeting as it is very serious at this stage. Mr. Rens Bindeman gave a bit of background and feedback on the matter and explained that the matter was discussed in more detail at the SARPA meeting the previous day as they are very much involved. 8 NEW MATTERS FOR DISCUSSION 8.1 The following members were elected to represent the Highveld Branch on the Executive Council: Existing Engineer members: Frikkie Erasmus - To stay on New Engineer member selected: Hennie Van Wyk - Proposed by Gerrit Teunissen - Seconded by Kobus Mynhardt Other existing branch members: Refilwe Mokgosi - Female representative Serutle Ntlatleng - HDI representative 9 PROGRESS REPORT 9.1 AMEU Executive Council Mr. Peter Fowles gave the latest feedback from the AMEU executive committee meeting that was held on 18 and 19 June. The following points were highlighted: Convention to 7 October at Sandton Convention Centre Affiliates Kim will give feedback under affiliates Cable theft were discussed at Convention 2014 huge feedback received ESCL mandate Electricity supply bylaws Electricity meters EIUG presentation Concerns on the wheeling of energy over municipal networks Electricity Cost of Supply study NERSA Electrical resellers (There is a Presentation on the AMEU website) Eskom MYPD3 Additional increase from July 2015 Eskom - Funding of Supply Still no feedback received SWH programme No further action Renewable Energy / Embedded Generation Please see AMEU Website Meeting will take place on 8 to 12 September AMEU Website currently being modernised to accommodate smart phones Draft meeting schedule for 2015 was circulated Complete report attached and also available on the AMEU website. 2

EXPANSION OF NETWORK / AMEU NEWSLETTER Mr. De Lange made apologies for Mr. Max Clarke and mentioned that Max asked him to give some feedback as follow: He thanked Max in his absence for all his work in this regard The next newsletter (No. 84) will be out in November after the convention Max need some utility news from Engineer members Once the newsletter is out a copy will be on the AMEU website Contact detail for Max is mppc@mweb.co.za. As always Max will appreciate any kind of feedback from members and affiliates More advertising is needed from the Affiliates as the newsletter is currently a burden for the AMEU. The income is not covering the cost / expenses at this stage. 11. NEWS FROM THE AFFILIATES Kim Dare reported back as follow: She thanked City Power for hosting the event and mentioned Sicelo Xulu & Gerrit Teunissen in particular She mentioned that she resigned from EE publishers and will be working at WPI in the future Currently the situation with the affiliates is healthy and this could be due to the convention coming up. Anyone who wants to sponsor or present a paper at the convention must be an affiliate. Requested affiliates to please pay their annual fees. Convention Sports day will be held at Killarny Golf/Country Club and there will be very good prizes for the winners More municipality members should attend these meetings. Tshabi will assist in this regard and requested info from other municipalities. Any suggestions on how branch meetings can be improved must be sent to the secretary. 12. NEWS FROM OTHER AMEU BRANCHES 12.1 BUSHVELD BRANCH Last meeting was held on 1 st of August and was reasonably well attended. They were debating if 3 or maybe 4 meetings should be held during a year NATAL BRANCH Their last meeting was very well attended and their next meeting will be at Champagne Sports resort on 27 & 28 November GOOD HOPE BRANCH Their last meeting was held on 15 August and was very well attended 3

4 12.4 FREESTATE BRANCH The last meeting was last Friday (22 Aug) and attendance at the meeting was very poor. Arrangements and organisation for the meeting was not good at all. 13 CORRESPONDENCE received from Mr. Max Clarke tendering his apologies and giving feedback regarding the newsletter. 14 PRESENTATIONS The following presentations were presented: 14.1 Being smart with Power Quality Tshepo Saphetlho (CT Lab) 14.2 Digital Management of Field Assets in an easy and seamless manner - Wilhelm Herbst (OPTRON) 14.3 Enhancing Quality and Efficiency of Transformers Thierry Grima (Transfix Transformers SA) 14.4 Ampact/Raysulate Gavin Dick (PTSI) 15 NEXT MEETING 27 February Venue and sponsor to be advised 16 SPONSORS The chair again thanked the main sponsor City Power for sponsoring the meeting and venue.
