1 Term 3, 2017 RGS Netball Club From the TIC - Mrs Lauren White Term three was geared up to be a massive term for netball and it did not disappoint! With many carnivals, RNA finals and the presentation night athletes and coaches were certainly kept busy. I would like to congratulate all players who received trophies at the presentation night and teams who have made premiers. You have achieved great feats and have made your clubs, peers, parents and coaches proud. Whether you won an individual trophy or didn t, came first in your division or last, I genuinely hope that every one of you gained the true benefits of being involved in sport this season. The authors Bronson and Merryman summarised these well in their book Top Dog; The Science of Winning and Losing, Competition used to be an outlet for all other virtues courage, loyalty, trustworthiness. In the heat of battle, [a great competitor] had proven him (or her)self to be a fearless opponent and brilliant strategist. When tested, [she] was a leader, masterfully skilled, knowledgeable and persuasive among her peers. [She] was physically strong, fast on her feet and agile. [She] was brave and steadfast in character. Human competitors in these days were attempting to demonstrate traits associated with gods and it was not just the way they fought that mattered, but how they maintained their honour. The Ancient Greeks did not fear that competition bred immoral behaviour. They believed that competition TAUGHT moral behaviour. Being truly competitive meant that competing had shaped you into being a better person: competition challenged you to become the best you could be. Regardless of what you achieved this year, I hope each of you used the opportunity you have had to become an even better person. Without the dedicated people who assist in our club, we would not be able to offer opportunities for so many girls to play. I would like to take a moment now to thank them. Players, accredited umpires, coaches, committee members, scorers, parents, catering staff, photographers, boarding staff and transport department; I can t thank you enough. It has been a long three terms, three sometimes four nights a week. We appreciate your commitment, sacrifice of personal and family time and dedication to our club. I would sincerely like to thank our captains for their contribution to our netball club. Their patience, support and good humour have been integral to our successful season and I can t thank them enough. I have honestly enjoyed spending nights at Jardine Park with you and know that future captains have a lot to live up to. I would like to thank our sponsors for their contribution to our netball club this year - Inferno, Elder s Insurance, J&J Sypher Earthworks and Rockhampton Powder Coating and Fencing. We will be offering additional sponsorship opportunities in 2018 if there are other families that would like to get on board. There are some specific people who I would like to acknowledge for their hard work this season and the presentation dinner: Mr Todd Wells; the RGS Netball committee (it s sad to think that some of you will be moving on next year. I can t thank you enough for your support throughout the season); Tricia Ruddick; Tanya Shuker and Sally Kuhl; Rachael McDonald; David Thompson; Mr Simon Ruddick; Trudi Stacey; Liz Scott; Cynthia Kele; Catering; Transport; Maintenance; Boarding staff; and RGS netball parents. We welcome those who are new to us this year and farewell those who will depart. We now start planning for next year, looking for coaches in particular. We are always in need of additional help. Despite being a School, we are still a volunteer club and require a large amount of assistance in a number of areas in order to support our extensive group of students. Please let me know if you are interested. It won t be long until we start on Keep an eye on Facebook and notices for information regarding trials upcoming events. Excerpts from the TIC Speech at the RGS Netball Presentation Dinner in Term 3. 3 2017 Season RNA Netball Finals The RGS Netball Club featured strongly in the Rockhampton Netball Association 2017 grand finals at Jardine Park on 9 September. RGS won the most premierships for a club with 7 titles and 3 runner-up titles. Earlier in the season 17 RGS teams played in semi-finals. Congratulations to all players, officials and supporters Premiers: Storm (A2), Bullets (B1), Pacers (B3), Redskins (C2), Warriors (B2), Suns (C1) and Chargers (E2); 2017 Runners-Up: Miners (D1), Giants (D2) and Sliders (F1). Clockwise from top left: Bullets, Suns, Warriors, Redskins, Storm, Pacers and Chargers. CQ Carnivals RGS teams supported carnivals at Rockhampton, Cap Coast, Biloela and Emerald this year. Thank you to all the players, officials and parents who supported the regional events. At the Rockhampton Sullivan s Carnival earlier this year Chargers (pictured above left) and Storm (above centre) won their divisions with Suns (above right) finishing runners-up. netball draft newsletter T indd 3 4/10/ :21:07 AM

4 2017 Season Primary School Netball News I m sure a few parents, and probably a few players, still remember their early days of netball. 5 Netball champions offer a new insight Laura Geitz and Clare McMeniman had the netball skills to take their game to the international stage. However, they also know there is another side to sport, particularly women s sport, and they are helping the game s young players think about a few other areas of their lives that aren t restricted to the netball court. Laura and Clare were kind enough to share their thoughts during a vist to Rockhampton over the school holidays. Why did you decide to hold your netball clinics in this format, with a mix of netball skills while also looking at the bigger picture? When we originally sat down to create this clinic series we both agreed that, for us, netball was about much more than the skills we learnt on court. Of course, we played because we loved the game and gained immense satisfaction from what we were achieving on the court with our team-mates but we both recognised that a majority of the life skills we gained through sports participation were much more important and a majority of these came from a combination of our on and off court learnings. For us, our confidence grew through being a part of a supportive community/network and challenging ourselves in this space. We know that young girls who continue to participate in sport throughout their adolescence have better self-perception/ confidence, perform better at school, have an improved ability to set goals and work to achieve these. That matters to us and we want others to understand these things as well. What is the main message you have for girls attending your netball clinics? To be comfortable and confident in your own skin - be the best version of you and help others to do the same: girls supporting girls. For us, we found this through netball but we don t mind where our participants find their place. Why is it important for girls to work on having self belief? Self-belief and the ability to use positive self-talk are really important factors to helping us ride the rollercoaster of life. When challenges and difficulties arise along the way (yes, even the most perfect of people will face these!), it is our self-belief and ability to talk ourselves through those situations that help us to dust ourselves off and persevere. For some people, they will be overflowing with self-belief and confidence in their abilities and for others, it is something that will require practice. If some players are finding it tough in that space, do you hae any tips to help them push through the barriers? Adopt a growth mindset for that moment in time and think about how much this challenge is going to help them be a stronger, more determined person. And also remember that you re not alone in that space- turn to your peers, coach, parents or whoever you have a closer relationship with to help you through it. Resilience is a growing message in today s society. How important is resilience in sport (including netball)? It s not just important in sport- it s something we need to be in everyday life. Nobody sails through life without facing challenges and your ability to be resilient during these periods, to maintain your self-talk and belief in your ability to keep going, is what helps us to overcome them. And if you don t achieve our goal at that time, our ability to look at it with an open mind, to see it as a learning opportunity and to go again, is a sign of your resilience. It s the off-season for many netballers. Any tips on what the girls could be focused on during the offseason? Take a break from netball! Participate in something new or totally different from netball where you have an opportunity to learn a new skill or make new friends. Both of us enjoyed athletics when we were in high school so that was our outlet from netball. Also, take the opportunity to spend more time on the weekends with your family and friends and just having a bit of time to yourself. Having a balance between school, sport, friends, family and yourself can be tricky, so when you have the opportunity to relax- take it! When it s time to start thinking about taking the court again next year what should a player s mindset be like? We approach every new season with the mindset that we re ready to embrace any challenges thrown our way. We take with us what we ve learnt from our previous experiences but we re ready to learn from those around us. Sometimes it s our younger team mates that teach us more than the coaches. So we d say approach your season ready to learn and grow as a player and a person, to be accepting of others in your team despite your differences and to embrace all of the opportunities that are given to you..but most of all, to just have fun! We have many girls finishing their schooling this year. Why could sport be important for them after their school days? Besides the obvious health benefits associated with sports participation one of our favourite parts of playing sport is the community you become a part of- it s about being a part of something that s bigger than just you. For those girls who are moving away from Rocky after they finish high school, joining a sporting team or group provides an opportunity to meet new friends and socialise which is so important when you move away from home. What s ahead for you in 2018? Both of us are excited about what 2018 will bring and are looking forward to continuing to spread our Fuel2Fly message. It will be a busy time for the two of us because for Laura, besides being a mum to 6 month old Barney, she will rejoin the Lorna Jane QLD Firebirds next year to compete in the Suncorp Super Netball. It s incredibly exciting and she s definitely up for the challenge! Clare on the other hand, will continue to be a mum to 2 year old Blue Cattle Dog Jane and continue her casual work as a Speech Pathologist at the PA Hospital in Brisbane as well as being the driving force behind everything behind the scenes at Fuel2Fly. Pictured above: RGS netballers Rena Werth (Year 7) and Lauren Corr (Year 7) pictured with Elise Corr, young Firebirds squad member Jemma Mi Mi, Clare and Laura. netball draft newsletter T indd 5 4/10/ :21:10 AM

6 Umpire News To begin my final umpire report of the season, I would like to bring to your attention the very uniqueness of our, RGS Netball Club. Firstly, we are one of only two netball clubs in the RNA competition that are school -based clubs and secondly our membership of players are all students of the school. Although teams such as Magic have played in the senior competition this year and in the past, the club is made up of kids! This makes us very unique. This uniqueness also applies to our pool of umpires. We had 67 umpires contribute to the RGS club this season, but only 5 of them are adults Lauren White, our TIC and Phantoms coach, Sonia Cooper, parent of Hallie and Katie, Mandy Neubecker, parent of Lucy and new to our club this year, Nat Bain, parent of Lillie and past RGS netball coach, and myself. I think it is very important to recognize these parents and coaches by presenting them with a token of our appreciation. Thank you so much for your contribution this season. Congratulations to Nat Bain, Jacqueline Sleaford, Dominique Sleaford, Lucy McCartney, Emily Horsley and Ava Tregea for completing their Foundation / Level 1 umpiring course this season. They each received an umpiring starter kit which is a new addition to the RGS umpire reward scheme this year. The starter kit includes a finger whistle, a hair band and a rule book. Thank you to the club for purchasing the rule books, Inferno for the finger whistles, Chemist Warehouse for the bags and Tanya Cottam for the hairbands. Our 62 student umpires this year are made up of a range of skills, experiences and levels of commitment. 35 of these umpires have done a great job fulfilling their allocation, and 2017 Umpire Awards for that, I thank you. However, 27 others have gone above and beyond what is expected of them and therefore have been acknowledged as well. The following 20 players umpired 5 or more games this season. They each received a movie pass as a token of appreciation for their umpiring efforts this season - Anthea Billman, Arnika Forrest, Ashla Everingham, Ava Tregea, Belinda Binnekamp, Bridget Young, Claire Moulds, Danielle James, Caitlin Van Loggerenberg, Elyshia Polkinghorne, Hannah Boyce, Kasey Frame, Keera Kingston, Lara Nobbs, Lauren Nielson, Lillie Bain, Lily Cottam, Ruby Spottiswood, Tahlia Shuker and Thommy Cumner. Thank you girls for all your efforts. The next group of students are exceptional as their contribution this season has been outstanding. Some completed 10 games or more right through to more than 20 games. The following umpires received an RGS Netball Club backpack for 10 games or more - Caitlin Spence, Jorja Luck, Meaghan Boyce, Roni Peff and Tessa Conaghan. Caitlyn Goudie umpired more than 15 games while Lauren Galloway and Lilly Kele umpired more than 20 games. Each umpire received a gift bag which included an umpire starter kit, a hand towel and a movie pass. I would like to thank everyone who has made a contribution to umpiring this season whether it be at RNA weekly fixtures, Secondary School Girls, Primary School Sport, as well as mentoring or supporting our umpires. Because remember, games don t happen without umpires.
