1 Term 2, 2016 RGS Netball Club From the President... The netball season is now in full swing and I get the opportunity to watch the Rockhampton Netball Association fixtures on a Tuesday and Wednesday evening and watched the Secondary Schoolgirls competition on the Thursday afternoon. Our RGS netball community is certainly well represented. It is great to see all the girls playing hard and enjoying the competition. I do hold a special place for our student umpires, we have to match our umpiring duties with our teams and this is no easy challenge for Mrs Ruddick, Mrs White and our Netball Captains. Every week I observe students going the extra mile, offering to pick up a game here and there, coming out on their non playing night, you know who you are, so thank you very much from the Club and all the players, we cannot be on the court without you. Schoolgirls has come to a close with many teams making semis and finals, well done to you all, it has been a great competition and the development of the girls in such a short time has been amazing. One special memory for me is watching the semi final between Meteors and Liberty, with Magic and a very vocal Grammar support squad watching on, such a great match and someone said it s not sheep stations well I think the spirit and intensity of the game could have left you mistaken that it was. As RNA continues RGS Magic prepare for QISSN, as a Bleney family this is our 4th and final year of participation in this incredible competition, we look forward to a great week of netball. I encourage you all to take some time out of your week to come along and watch Magic in action. Good luck Magic, stay strong and proud, represent your School well and watch out for each other, team is always best! Yours in netball Wendy (President, RGS Netball Club) From the TIC... The 2016 School Girls competition certainly kept us on our toes this season with many close games between a range of teams. Out of our 23 teams, 17 made it to finals, with 13 progressing to Grand Finals and 8 taking the premiership title. As a club we can all be extremely proud of these achievements. These results do not come without a large amount of work from our committee, coaches, head coaches, captains, players, umpires as well as the school s supporting community and I would like to thank everyone for their contribution. Moving ahead to next term, it will be a quick progression to RNA finals, so we will be moving into the competition phase of our training programs. Every ounce of effort will count and every moment of practice will assist in gaining the edge to land a position in the top four. Leading up to finals, it can be difficult to remain focused on the goal of being involved in netball, which is to gain excellence in every aspect of the game. The wins feel good, but the skill development will provide increased opportunities for players beyond our club. Our main goal is development (physically and emotionally) and it is important that we continue our strive for this. Don t forget to support QISSN these holidays. We don t often get to compete in our home town and Magic are hitting a peak in their performance leading up to the week. If you can t make it to the games, TCC is live streaming some of them, so you can watch them from the comfort of your house. Like our Facebook page to stay updated. Enjoy your break from netball. I look forward to seeing you after the holidays! Yours in netball Mrs White (Teacher-In-Charge, Netball) Show your support for RGS Magic QISSN 2016 Rockhampton (26 June - 1 July) More details page 2

2 QISSN 2016 Rocky hosts schoolgirls netball QISSN will bring together teams showcasing quality netball in Rockhampton from 26 June to 1 July. The week-long event starts with the opening ceremony at host school The Cathedral College on 26 June before teams hit the courts on Monday, 27 June. RGS Magic, the defending champions after winning back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015, will feature in Pool A and play their games at CQUniversity. Lydia White, Bleney, Scott, Katie Emmert and Elizabeth Hills played in the 2015 QISSN team. Magic s 2016 team co-captains, Lydia White and Bleney, introduce you to Magic and QISSN: Lydia White: Hey girls, my name is Lydia White and I play for Grammar s first VII netball team. Alongside, I am lucky enough to help captain Magic this year and am proud to say that we play with such a beautiful bunch of girls. Last year we were lucky enough to win the Queensland interschool secondary schools netball tournament (QISSN) for a second year in a row. As preparation for QISSN this year, we have been doing plenty of training and gym sessions along with a great deal of personal work, to develop our game play and fitness. QISSN means a great deal to us Magic players and we are working the hardest that we possibly can to get the best result possible this year. See you all around on the courts. Bleney: QISSN is nearly here. As a team Magic has been working hard in preparation for the competition. Through the RNA competition we are developing our game, combinations and plays to give us the best opportunity to do well in this statewide competition. Many of the Magic players are new to the team this year and we have been working with our coaches, Tanya and Sally to improve our timing, discipline and playing levels. The Rockhampton Grammar School has such a good history at QISSN, especially over the past three years. Going in as defending champions does add a level of pressure for myself and the girls, but we will not let that affect our play. We will work as a team, adapt to each game and best of all make some great memories along the way. The competition is in Rockhampton, I invite anyone who has the time to come along and support us in our games. As captain I am extremely proud to lead the Magic team through the QISSN competition. The outcome is not as significant as the friendships and experiences that develop along the way, in saying that we will be playing to win. The RGS QISSN team is: Lydia White, Bleney, Scott, Katherine Campbell, Katie Emmert, Georgie Turner, Ella Thompson, Elizabeth Hills, Keera Kingston, Lilly Kele. Coaches: Tanya Shuker and Sally Kuhl (nee White, RGS 1993) QISSN draw (Magic) Pool A (games at CQU): Monday, 27 June: 8am v Clairvaux Mackillop College 10am v Aquinas College 12.30pm v St Margaret Mary s College 3pm v Somerset College Tuesday, 28 June: 9am v St Ursula s Toowoomba 11.30am v St Patrick s College Mackay 1.30pm v Southern Cross Catholic College End of Pool A games. 4 Netballers hit the gym RGS netballers are trialing a new approach to their training this season with some teams hitting the gym to discover more about preparing themselves for netball games. Vector Health is coordinating the athletic development programs at RGS in 2016, holding two netball specific sessions on Tuesday from 3:15pm and Friday from 6am. There are 3 main goals for these sessions: 1. Reduce Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury likelihood, which is one of the major injuries that many netball players sustain. 2. Reduce ankle injury likelihood 3. Improve performance through better contest strength, speed, jump height and agility. Sessions focus specifically on developing athletic principles of movement, so working on landing control for ankle and knee injury prevention, improving strength and power and some conditioning work, such as stair bounding, hill sprints and strength endurance training. We incorporate a specific core strength program. The program is designed by Glenn Hansen, who has coached for more than 15 years and who has designed and developed the Claws Strength and Conditioning Program for the past 5 years. The program is delivered by Samantha Thomasson, a Junior Performance Coach at Vector Health, and herself an Australian Representative in two sports. Glenn said there would be a progression over the year to move to weight bearing or resistance exercises, however this is based on the proficiency of each girl as to whether we decide whether they should incorporate external load into their program. What the players say... Bleney (Magic Year 12): The gym is a friendly environment to train in and helps stability, strength and fitness. Since we started the gym sessions, I feel better prepared for our games. Lydia White (Magic Year 12): For me personally, I feel like I m gaining a better understanding of high intensity endurance which is something all netballers should have because it is so essential to the sport. I think all the girls are learning a lot about themselves and how fit they actually are I know I have a lot to work on! Samantha Namasasu (Storm Year 9): I think the gym sessions have really benefitted my game plays and now I know that you don t only need to be fast to play, but you also need to have strength, especially core strength, and gym has helped with that a lot. Horsley (Storm Year 9): I think the gym sessions are really helping our whole team with our fitness and strength, as well as bringing us together through team bonding. - student comments compiled by Amie Shann. 5 Umpire Convenor Praise for umpires As the RNA season draws to a close and the Secondary School Girls competition has come to an end, it is a great chance for some reflection, as well as acknowledgement and recognition our RGS umpires. Firstly, I would like to thank the Netball captains for their support of our umpires and their ability to step in to umpire at short notice. They have been great role models for our younger, less experienced umpires and have shown enormous commitment to the club. Congratulations to our newest umpires who have completed their Level 1 accreditation and have had their first experiences with umpiring. To the wonderful pool of experienced umpires, who umpire on a more regular basis, I thank you for your dedication. The following girls have shown a true commitment to umpiring this season: Caitlin Van Loggerenberg, Caitlyn Goudie, Lauren Galloway, Kat Campbell, Anthea Billman, Gabby Norris- Kvikne, Elyshia Polkinghorne, Erin Beak, Lara Nobbs, Lara Shannon, Grace Wakeman, Sophie Harris, Telia Morgan, Amy Howe, Amie Shann, Monique Matson, Roni Peff, Meaghan Boyce, Lillie Bain, Lily Cottam, Hannah Searles, Keera Kingston, Giorgia Bayles, Georgie Turner, Lilly Kele, Erin McFarlane, Bleney, Chloe Walsh, Logan Jones, Danielle James, Bridget Young and Abbie Green. Congratulations to Lauren Galloway on receiving Umpire of the Season for The Rockhampton Grammar School at the recent Secondary School Girls Grand Final presentation. Your love of umpiring is truly inspiring. Well done, Lauren. I huge thank you must also go to the many girls in boarding who are allocated to umpire on their non-playing night and travel to the courts whenever they are needed. This has been especially noted on Monday nights at 6:50pm. Thanks girls, this is much appreciated. Thank you to the coaches who have given their players the opportunity to practise their umpiring during training sessions. This is always an invaluable experience in a non-competitive environment. Keep up the good work. Enjoy the remainder of the netball season. Mrs Tricia Ruddick RGS Netball Umpiring Convenor Hoopla Primary School Netball The Rockhampton and District Primary School Sport Friday afternoon netball is underway at Jardine Park on Friday afternoons. RGS is this year represented by Stars (6A), Chargers (6B), Sparkies (6C), Sliders (5A) and Lightning (5D). Games continue in Term 3 through to the grand finals on Friday, 26 August. Year 9 players from Giants, Mets and Mystics test their umpiring skills during a training session in Duggan Hall. Thanks to Mrs White for taking the time to introduce more players to the world of netball umpiring.

6 Netball Carnivals - Sullivans Carnival - Rockhampton Congratulations to RGS teams on supporting the Rockhampton Netball Association s Sullivan s Netball Carnival, a carnival which was first held in Sparks and Mystics won their divisions while Magic, Suns and Mets finished runners-up in their competitions. Storm and Sliders also played some strong netball against different teams. Thank you to all the players who umpired over the carnival and thank you to all the RGS supporters.

7 RGS Netball Captains Report... Netballers Celebrate Pink Week Thank you to the RGS netball teams which added a touch of pink to their uniforms in the week of 6-10 June to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Network Australia. The Rockhampton Netball Association raised almost $2000 over the three playing nights. Thank you to all RGS players and supporters who supported this cause. Team Spirit - The first semester of netball has almost come to an end and school girls finals are coming up this week. With such a long season, it is great that each week umpires have been turning up for their games and teams are continuing their enthusiasm. In particular a team that has caught my eye the most with their team spirit are the Mystics (pictured above), a Year 9 team that competes in the JNR B1 division in RNA. They have made their own warm up routine/dance that the girls all count the steps to before each of their games. Its great that the girls are having so much fun competing together throughout the season. I hope that everyone enjoys the last few weeks of the RNA season - Carlee Clews RNA Netball - This year it is exciting to see so many students taking the opportunity to be active, social and embrace the notion of having a go no matter what their ability is. With 23 secondary netball teams, and six primary school teams, 2016 has proven to be a busy, yet thrilling year for all of us so far. The Rockhampton Netball Association games are on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday nights. At the start of the year the teams were graded to decide what level they were. These games challenged every team and provided opportunities to develop new skills, learn from each game and develop as a team, which is what we are seeing as a whole. However the end is not far away, with the Semi-finals in August so make the most of the next few games if you want to make finals! - Lara Shannon Dedicated Umpires - It s been a great year of netball so far and this wouldn t be the case it weren t for our club s dedicated umpires. We have noticed that the umpiring this year has significantly improved as we have started to the allocated umpires, asking them to reply regarding whether they can make it. This has taken a lot of pressure off the hassle of finding replacements and avoids the trouble of leaving it to the last minute. The Schoolgirls competition QISSN 2016 Rockhampton (26 June - 1 July) RGS website (netball information): The next Hoopla edition will be in Term 3 this year has also given a lot of new students the opportunity to try umpiring for the first time as it do not require umpires to have completed their Level One Umpiring Course. The introduction of mentors for these inexperienced umpires have proved to be very successful as we are continuing to notice the increasing talent of our Grammar umpires. A huge thank you to those that volunteer as replacements and to our umpires that check their s regularly and show up to their games. Our club wouldn t be the same without you. - Sophie Harris Schoolgirls - The Rockhampton District Secondary Schools Netball (RDSSN) competition is held throughout Term 2 every year. RGS Netball Club Committee (2016): President - Wendy Bleney Vice President - Susie Collard Secretary - Carole Van Loggerenberg Treasurer - Liz Scott Umpire Convenor - Tricia Ruddick Committee Members - Natalie Bain, Vicki Crow, Cynthia Kele, Sally Kuhl, Tanya Shuker Teacher-in-Charge - Lauren White RGS Dodgers The competition allows girls of the same grade to play to the best of their ability against each other to represent their school. After the regular rounds 13 RGS teams made it through to the semi-finals on 10 June. Storm, Mystics, Miners and Suns all automatically qualified for the grand finals after finishing on top of their divisions. The grand finals were played on Friday, 11 June. RGS was represented by 13 teams on grand final night with eight teams winning premierships this year. We thank all girls who have umpired, mentored and supported the teams throughout this short season and wish all the teams the best of luck for the remainder of the 2016 netball season. - Scott
