LFSN Radio (90.9 FM "The Light") THE STARTING 5 - LIBERTY'S TOP STORYLINES Liberty (0-1) will tip off its home schedule on Tuesday with its first matchup against in-state foe Virginia Tech (2-0) in 10 years. The Lady Flames are in search of their first win of the season and their first ACC victory since their triumph at Virginia Tech on Dec. 30, 2008 in the teams' most recent head-to-head meeting. Liberty will look to extend its 15-game home winning streak, which is the eighth-longest active streak among NCAA Division I women's basketball teams. Redshirt sophomore forward Emily Lytle made an impressive Liberty debut during Friday's overtime loss at Bethune-Cookman. She scored a game-high 24 points, including three free throws with 0.3 showing on the clock to force the extra session. Senior forward KK Barbour, a preseason ASUN All-Conference selection, came off the bench for the first time since her sophomore season on Friday but flourished in her new role. She posted her sixth career double-double (12 points, 13 rebounds) and has now scored in double figures in nine straight outings. VIRGINIA TECH Liberty is just 1-14 all-time against the Hokies, including 0-7 in Lynchburg. The two teams have not played one another since Dec. 30, 2008, when Liberty recorded its first-ever win over Virginia Tech by a score of Aided by future WNBA players Megan Frazee (20 points, 7 rebounds) and Avery Warley (11 points, 18 rebounds), Liberty captured the Hokie Hardwood Classic title in Blacksburg with that victory. Liberty is facing Kenny Brooks for the first time as Virginia Tech's head coach, but the Lady Flames were 2-7 against James Madison during Brooks' 14 seasons with the Dukes. Rebounding will be a key stat to watch on Tuesday. Liberty was +27 on the boards during its season opener at Bethune-Cookman, while Virginia Tech boasts a rebound margin during its two victories this year. Sweden natives Melat Sissay (Liberty) and Regan Magarity (Virginia Tech) will sqaure off on Tuesday. HOME SWEET HOME Liberty enters Tuesday's game riding a 15-game home winning streak, after going 15-0 at the Vines Center in The Lady Flames, whose last home loss came at the hands of Charleston Southern on March 10, 2017, are on the fourth-longest home winning streak in program history and the eighth-longest active streak in NCAA Division I women's basketball. COMPETING AGAINST THE COMMONWEALTH The Lady Flames are 22-6 in their last 28 games against instate opponents, including a 4-2 mark last season. Liberty is only scheduled to face two Commonwealth opponents this season, including Virginia Tech (Tuesday) and James Madison (Nov. 29). The Lady Flames could also meet Norfolk State on Nov. 25, depending on the previous day's results at Lehigh's Christmas City Classic. The Lady Flames also spent their first two hotel nights of the season in Daytona Beach. LADY FLAMES IN HOME OPENERS Liberty is all-time in home openers, including at the Vines Center and 13-6 under Carey Green. Liberty has lost three of its last five home openers, but the Lady Flames did open the home slate with a triumph over Limestone on Nov. 28, The Lady Flames have won 80 percent of home games at the Vines Center all-time, including 86 percent under Carey Green. See page 8 for more on the Vines Center. LIBERTY VS. THE ACC Liberty is 4-28 all-time versus ACC opponents, with two of its victories coming against Virginia and one apiece versus Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. The Lady Flames have lost nine straight meetings with ACC foes since Dec. 30, That day, Liberty edged Virginia Tech in the championship game of the Hokie Hardwood Classic in Blacksburg, Va. Liberty will be facing an ACC opponent for the sixth straight season. The Lady Flames are 0-7 vs. the ACC over the span, with four of the losses coming by eight points or fewer. Virginia Tech is the fourth different ACC team to play at the Vines Center in the last six seasons, following Virginia ( ), NC State ( ) and Duke ( ). The Lady Flames are seeking their first home win over an ACC foe since a OT victory over Virginia on Nov. 26, on this date: Liberty is 3-2 all-time when playing on Nov. 13, including 1-1 at home and 0-1 versus Virginia Tech. NOV. 13 The Hokies spoiled the Lady Flames' season opener at the Vines Center with a decision before a crowd of 3,913 on Nov. 13, Katie O'Conner led the Hokies' balanced attack with 14 points. The Lady Flames spent the previous 27 seasons ( through ) in the Big South Conference, winning 16 regular-season titles and 17 tournament championships. 3: Three former Lady Flames have gone on to play in the WNBA, including Katie (Feenstra) Mattera, Megan (Frazee) Leuzinger and Avery Warley-Talbert. 6: Carey Green is the sixth head coach in program history. GREAT EXPECTATIONS Hopes are high as Liberty begins its inaugural season of ASUN Conference play. The Lady Flames were picked to finish second by the league's head coaches and third by the media panel. Defending champion FGCU was tabbed the preseason favorite by both groups. AIMING FOR BACK-TO-BACK DANCES After making its 17th NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018, the Lady Flames will look to make it back-to-back visits to the "Big Dance" this season. Liberty has not played in consecutive NCAA Tournaments since 2012 and RULERS OF THE REBOUNDS Liberty has ranked among the nation s top 20 teams for rebound margin in each of the last 16 seasons, leading the country on six occasions ( , , , , and ). RULERS OF THE REBOUNDS, PART 2 Liberty opened the season with a dominating rebounding effort at Bethune-Cookman on Friday. The Lady Flames outrebounded the Lady Wildcats by 27 boards (55-28), including 22 offensive caroms. RULERS OF THE REBOUNDS, PART 3 During Carey Green's tenure at Liberty, the Lady Flames have outrebounded 83.9 percent (511 of 609) of their opponents. Liberty's record when winning the rebounding battle under Green's direction is , including 0-1 this season. WINNING COMBINATION Last season, Liberty was one of four teams to rank among the nation's top 20 for rebound margin and scoring defense, joining Baylor, Green Bay and UConn. 4 FABULOUS FRESHMEN Liberty's roster includes both the 2017 Big South Freshman of the Year (Keyen Green) and the 2018 Big South Freshman of the Year (Ashtyn Baker). This is the first time Liberty has ever won back-toback conference freshman of the year honors. Liberty is one of three NCAA Division I teams which currently features freshmen of the year from each of the last two seasons, along with new ASUN rival Kennesaw State and Oregon. SPLENDID SUMMER For the third time in program history (also 2010 and 2014), the Liberty women's basketball team took a summer trip to Israel, spending July 20-Aug. 12 in the Holy Land. The Lady Flames played a pair of games against the Israel National Team, winning both matchups. THE GLASS IS HALF FULL The Lady Flames are under Head Coach Carey Green when making at least 50 percent of their field goals, including 8-1 last season. Liberty had won the last 35 times it shot 50 percent or better, dating back to March 20, 2010, before shooting 52 percent during its loss to Houston on Nov. 24, THE GLASS IS HALF EMPTY Only 25 of 609 (4.1 percent) opposing teams have shot 50 percent or better from the field during Head Coach Carey Green's tenure at Liberty. WORKING OVERTIME Liberty has played 33 overtime games in program history, going Friday's season-opening overtime loss at Bethune-Cookman was the Lady Flames' first overtime contest since an setback at Gardner-Webb on Jan. 15, Liberty had not played overtime in a season opener since Nov 24, 1986, when the Lady Flames posted a home win over High Point.
