LOOKING AT THE CLASSES: The field hockey senior class has won three consecutive national championship titles and has accumulated an overall record of In addition, they have the opportunity to become the only team in field hockey history to win four consecutive national championships. The junior class has compiled an impressive resume over the past two years. Having won every tournament but two (the 2004, 2005 ACC Tournament), these Demon Deacons have never experienced a non-conference loss and only two conference losses. In addition, the juniors boast two national team players -- Jamie Whitten and Lauren Crandall. Crandall, who was named to the NFHCA third team All-American, is the first Deacon sophomore to earn All- American honors since Kelly Doton and Kelly Dostal (both Honda Award and National Player of the Year selections) did so in their second years at. Sophomores, Lauren Love and Chelsea Cipriani, both return for their second year having never lost in the NCAA tournament and have beaten every ACC opponent at least twice. They have never fallen at a neutral site and only have two losses at home. The seven member recruiting class is the largest in program history. The freshmen class might also be one of the most talented. Boasting a U-21 National Team selection, in addition to a twotime first team prep All-American, the Deacs will be well prepared to defend their national titles.

Each of those above four were also named All-ACC. Laubach and Dostal were selected to the US National Team, while Crandall and Jamie Whitten were placed on the Under-21 US National team. Ariel Meyers was named an NFHCA second-team All-American. In 2003, the Deacs were the top-ranked team through-out the season, a feat that they carried over from the 2002 season. Wake opened that year 12-0 and on a 31-game winning streak, but fell to Duke in their only loss of the season. Wake Forest rebounded from the loss to beat Duke in overtime at the ACC Championship and in regulation to seal consecutive NCAA Titles. Outshooting opponents and outscoring them 96-13, led the nation in scoring defense, winning percentage and margin of victory. Her success in 2003 again earned her honors as ACC Coach of the Year, Division I South Region Coach of the Year and Division I National Coach of the Year. Individual awards in 2003 were not limited to the coaching staff. Senior Kelly Doton earned the National Player of the Year award, as well as her second ACC Player of the Year award. Averill coached four All-Americans in 2003 in seniors Doton, Katie Ridd and Lucy Shaw and Dostal. During the past six seasons, Averill has led the Demon Deacons to their first six NCAA Tournament appearances since field hockey began at Wake Forest in In each of the past five seasons, the Deacs have marched all the way to the NCAA semifinals, a run that was capped off by winning the national championships in 2002, 2003 and Averill took the job in 1992, the year that left the Deep South Association and joined the ACC, adding scholarships for field hockey players and upping the level of competition immensely. Since then, Averill has built the program to what it is today, cracking the top 25 for the first time in 1994, when the Deacons were ranked 20th at season's end. Her squads have appeared in the national top 25 every year since, reaching the number one spot for the first time in Last season, traveled to Boston, Mass. for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. In blizzard-like conditions, the Deacons defeated Harvard, 7-1, and Northeastern, 4-2, to earn a ticket back to Kentner Stadium for the NCAA Field Hockey Championship weekend. swept through the semifinal and championship games, defeating Maryland, 3-0 and Duke, 3-0 to clinch a third straight national title. Over the past six years, Averill's teams have compiled an outstanding record, including a 17-3 mark in the NCAA Tournament. In 1999, Averill led the team to its first-ever ACC Tournament final, en route to the squad's first NCAA Tournament appearance. She was named ACC Coach of the Year that season, as well as NFHCA South Region Coach of the Year. Averill's success as a coach is not surprising, for in her playing days she was one of the nation's premier players. Averill was a four-time All-American at Northwestern and in her senior year of 1987, she was awarded the Honda Broderick Award as the nation's best field hockey player. Also in 1987, Averill won the Big Ten's Medal of Honor for academic excellence and the Jesse Owens Award as the conference's best athlete. In 1989, Averill was honored by Northwestern as the university's Female Athlete of the Decade for the 1980s. Averill competed in two Final Fours as a Wildcat and from 1983 to 1987, played on the U.S. National Team. She was inducted into the Northwestern Hall of Fame in September of Averill began her coaching career with a short tenure as an assistant at Dartmouth before accepting the head coaching job at Bucknell. She remained there until 1991, when she led the Bison to their first.500 season in seven years and was named Patriot League Coach of the Year. Averill remains active in field hockey outside of, as both a coach and player. She is currently a member of the reserve assistant staff for the United States National Team as well as the Under-23 and Under-16 teams. From 2000 to 2002, she played for Southern Charm, the United Summer League champions. As the two-time defending NCAA Champion head coach, Averill was featured on the 2004 NCAA Field Hockey Selection show, shortly after which she gave birth to her first son, Nicolas Simon Averill.
