The Lady Flames will take on the No. 17 JMU Dukes in their season opener on Friday at 6 p.m. at the JMU Field Hockey Complex in Harrisonburg, Va. On Sunday, Liberty will face off against the No. 3 Duke Blue Devils at Jack Katz Stadium in Durham, N.C. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. SERIES HISTORY Liberty is 1-0 all-time versus Kent State and 2-0 in the all-time series with Ohio. LADY FLAMES NEWS AND NOTES Liberty senior Agueda Moroni was named the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday morning by the NFHCA. Moroni, also the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, tallied 11 points (4 g, 3 a) in road games versus No. 17 James Madison and No. 3 Duke, last week. Junior goalkeeper Allison Schaefer was tabbed the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week by the league office on Tuesday morning. The Pennsylvania native had 15 saves, a.750 save percentage, 2.46 goals-against-average and a 1-1 mark over the first weekend of play. The Lady Flames offense is near the top of the NCAA in numerous offensive categories: goals per game (third, 4.50), points per game (fourth, 13.00) assists per game (fifth, 4.00), scoring average (fifth, 4.43) and scoring margin (16th, 1.97). The Lady Flames featured a league-best four players on the preseason All-BIG EAST team: sophomore defender Ashley Dykema (also preseason Defensive Player of the Year,), senior forward/midfielder Agueda Moroni (also preseason Co-Offensive Player of the Year) sophomore midfielder Jill Bolton and junior goalkeeper Allison Schaefer. Liberty defeated James Madison 6-1. Agueda Moroni notched her third career hat trick, while Kemy Meidane, Mallory Fortenbaugh and Alivia Klopp also scored goals. On Sunday at No. 3 Duke, Liberty fell 4-3 to the Blue Devils in overtime. The Lady Flames overcame a two-goal deficit to force the extra session. However, Duke scored just over two minutes into overtime to win the match. RANKED WIN/KNOCKING ON THE DOOR Liberty s win at No. 17 James Madison was its first against a ranked opponent since a 2-1 overtime victory at No. 20 American on Oct. 6, The Lady Flames have been close to knocking off numerous ranked opponents over the past two seasons. Liberty s 4-3 loss at No. 3 Duke marked the second straight year the Lady Flames fell to the Blue Devils by that exact same score in overtime. CAREER FIRSTS/SPREADING THE WEALTH Six different Liberty players found the back of the cage on opening weekend, including a trio of freshmen in Kemy Meidane, Alivia Klopp and Lizzie Hamlett. Meidane scored the Lady Flames first goal of the season at No. 17 James Madison, while Klopp also scored in that contest. On Sunday, Hamlett s first career goal helped tie No. 23 Liberty with No. 3 Duke at 3-3 and force overtime. CHALLENGING 2018 SCHEDULE The Lady Flames, who closed the year as the 23rdranked team in the nation in 2017, have now opened the year as a nationally-ranked team for a third straight season (No. 13 in 2016, No. 25 in 2017). The poll was expanded in 2017 to include 25 teams. The Lady Flames will face eight ranked opponents in After an opening weekend that featured tough road bouts at No. 17 James Madison and No. 3 Duke, Liberty s rugged schedule also features home bouts against No. 7 Virginia (Sept. 16), No. 14 Wake Forest (Sept. 30), No. 2 North Carolina (Oct. 7) and No. 13 Boston College (Oct. 21). Liberty will compete against No. 11 Syracuse in a neutral-site match on Oct. 14 in Durham, N.C., followed by a trip to No. 1 UConn on Oct. 18. INTERNATIONAL FLAIR This year s squad features six international players: Agueda Moroni (Corboba Argentina), Moniek van Aarle (Schijndel, Netherlands), Victoria O Keeffe LIBERTY NOTES (Wellington, New Zealand), Kemy Meidane (Utrecht, Netherlands), Charlotte Vaanhold (Hollandsche Rading, Netherlands) and Sophie McDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe). ROOTS This year s Liberty field hockey team theme is ROOTS. For the team, this means choosing to play free, to be selfless and care more about the person next to them than themselves, to be passionate about what they do and who they do it with and to be relentless and courageous in the face of tough situations. HISTORY LESSON The 2018 season will mark the eighth season of competition for the program. In its first seven years, the Lady Flames have gone from a fledgling program to a nationally-known and respected team. In just their third season (2013) of competition, they captured a conference title (NorPac) to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. In 2014, Liberty replicated the feat from the prior year, winning the NorPac Championship again. They went on to win a play-in game in the NCAA Field Hockey Championship prior to being eliminated in the first round. Liberty has seen three All-Americans in the first seven years of the program: Natalie Barr (third team, 2015), Serena Barr (second team, 2016) and Agueda Moroni (2017). In 2017, Serena Barr became the first Liberty student-athlete to be selected as both a Top 30 Honoree and Top 9 Honoree for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. ACADEMIC SUCCESS The Liberty field hockey program is known for its success in the classroom. During the academic year, the Lady Flames featured a league-best 23 BIG EAST All-Academic team selections. In addition, the Lady Flames received the 2017 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I Academic Team Award for having a team GPA of 3.0 or greater. Liberty, which had a 3.50 GPA as a team, was one of 75 Division I programs to earn the distinction and has now received the honor in each of the program s first seven years. In addition, 20 Liberty field hockey student-athlete garnered inclusion on the Division I National Academic Squad for achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the academic year. Three players - Carolyn Haase, Annika Roberts and Alexis Paone - were honored as Division I Scholars of Distinction. 2

BIG EAST OUTLOOK For a third straight year, the Lady Flames have been picked to finish second in the conference behind UConn. Liberty earned one first-place vote and 43 points, behind the Huskies (49 points, seven firstplace votes). Old Dominion and Providence, who both participated in the 2017 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, comprised the third and fourth positions. The 2018 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship will be held at the Liberty Field Hockey Field for the first time. The Lady Flames finished second to UConn in the BIG EAST regular-season standings and at the conference championship in both 2016 and SCHAEFER STANDS ATOP RECORD BOOK/MORONI CHASES MORE HISTORY Junior netminder Allison Scheafer stands Moroni alone atop the career saves listing for Liberty field hockey at 242. She became the program s all-time saves leader with her 207th career save in a win at Temple, Oct. 27, Senior midfielder/ forward Agueda Moroni is the team s active leader in career goals with 33 and is fourth in program history in the category. Schaefer piled up 124 saves as a freshman and 103 as a sophomore, earning second team All-BIG EAST honors both years. In her first year with the Lady Flames, Moroni scored 10 goals. Parsley-Blocker is the second head coach in the history of the program, taking over for program founder Jodi Murphy, who left in December In her first season as head coach, Parsley-Blocker guided Liberty to an 8-11 mark and a No. 23 national ranking at season s end. The Lady Flames finished 5-2 in BIG EAST regular-season play for a second straight year and placed as the runner-up at the 2017 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. The Lady Flames faced nine nationally ranked foes in 2017, including all four 2017 Division I Field Hockey Championship Final Four participants. Parsley-Blocker instructed Liberty s four All-BIG EAST selections in Agueda Moroni (first team), Jill Bolton (first team), Ashley Dykema (first team) and Allison Schaefer (second team). Moroni also went on to become the third All- American in program history, earning NFHCA Division I All- America second team recognition. Moroni (first team) and Bolton (second team) both garnered inclusion on the NFHCA All-South Region team. In addition, Moroni (first team), Bolton (second team) and Dykema (second team) all garnered recognition on the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Field Hockey All-State University Division team. During her first season with the Lady Flames in fall 2016, Parsley-Blocker helped Liberty post an 8-10 record and finish in second place in the BIG EAST with a 5-2 conference mark. Parsley-Blocker coached Liberty s five All-BIG EAST selections in 2016, including BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Allison Schaefer and BIG EAST Co-Defensive Player of the Year Serena Barr. Barr also went on to earn NFHCA Division I All-America second team honors, becoming the second All- American in program history. Parsley-Blocker came to Liberty after spending the 2014 and 2015 seasons as an assistant coach at Yale. Prior to her two-year stint at Yale, Parsley-Blocker concluded a standout career at Northwestern in 2014, where she earned second team All-America honors as a senior. Parsley-Blocker was a four-time All-West region pick and a three-time All-Big 10 selection. A forward/midfielder, Parsley-Blocker started 76 games, totaling 33 goals and 76 points. The Wildcats went in Parsley-Blocker s playing career, earning a share of the Big Ten championship in Parsley-Blocker also has extensive experience with USA Field Hockey, including playing for the U.S. at the Four Nations Tournament in New Zealand in April She also played on the junior national team at the Junior World Cup in Germany in August 2013, helping the U.S. to a seventh-place finish, tied for the best in the team s history. In January 2013, Parsley-Blocker played in the Australian Youth Olympics, and in September 2012 she played in the Junior Pan American Games in Mexico. She helped the U.S. to a third-place finish at the Junior Pan Am Games, leading the team with eight goals. Parsley-Blocker has also played for the U.S. U-21 team (on a tour of England in April 2012) and the U.S. U-19 team (on a tour of Chile in April 2011). She is currently an assistant coach for the U.S. U-17 Women s National Team. Parsley-Blocker received her B.S. in education and social policy from Northwestern in She earned Academic All-Big Ten honors three times, was on the Dean s List three times and was also a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. Parsley-Blocker is originally from Milford, Del. Parsley- Blocker, formerly Parsley, is married to Liberty Assistant Athletic Trainer Hugh Blocker, who serves as the athletic trainer for the Lady Flames and Flames cross country and track & field programs.
