The Bobcats and the Buckeyes square off Sunday at 1 p.m. at North Turf Field in Columbus. A LOOK AT THE CATS Ohio opened the 07 season last weekend with a 2-1 upset of No. 4 Duke at the Champions Invitational Tournament. The Bobcats then lost 3-2 in overtime to No. 19 Michigan State in the tournament finale. Torrie Albini led Ohio s offense with two goals, four points and nine shots. Junior Estienne Coetzee and sophomore Katelyn Shelley also contributed offensively with one goal apiece. SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES The Ohio State Buckeyes will face St. Louis Saturday before hosting the Bobcats Sunday. Ohio State opened its 2007 season by hosting the Buckeye Invitational, Aug at North Turf Field. After dropping the first game by a score of 4-0 to Delaware, the Buckeyes responded Sunday with a 6-1 victory over Bucknell. Senior Yesenia Luces tallied five points in the win and Michaela O Malley scored twice. Junior Linda Haussener had a goal and assist and freshman Jena Cacciatore tallied her first point as a Buckeye with a goal as well. SERIES INFORMATION The Buckeyes lead in the series with Ohio. Joe Waltasti Main Office Phone: Department Fax: Department Address:...N117 Convocation Center Athens, OH FIELD HOCKEY PICKED TO REPEAT MAC CHAMPIONSHIP According to the 2007 MAC Preseason Coaches Poll, the Ohio field hockey team has been selected to finish first in the conference and win the 2007 MAC regular-season and tournament titles. The Bobcats received five first-place votes. Head Coach Neil Macmillan and the Bobcats won the MAC regularseason and tournament titles last season and finished with a 13-9, 8-2 MAC record. Torrie Albini and Rachelle Coetzee were selected first-team All-MAC and Macmillan was named MAC Coach of the Year. Albini led the MAC with 37 points and six game-winning goals last season. She also tied for first place with 14 goals. Ball State was selected to finish second in the conference. The Cardinals return 12 letterwinners and seven starters. Central Michigan was picked to finish third. The Chippewas return MAC Freshman of Year Kim Erasmus and All-MAC First Team selection Samantha Sandham. Kent State, Miami, and Missouri State round out the poll at the fourth, fifth, and sixth spots, respectively. ASSISTANT FIELD HOCKEY COACH LEADS UNDER-14 TEAM TO VICTORY Ohio Assistant Field Hockey Coach Mollie Reichard coached the USA North Under-14 Team to a gold medal at the National Futures Championship hosted by the US Field Hockey Association (USFHA) in June. USA North went a perfect 5-0 in pool play before defeating USA Red, 5-2, in the championship game. The team was also presented with the sportsmanship award, named after former USA national team member Barbara Longstreth. Reichard has coached in the Futures Program for seven years. She led her Under-14 team to a silver medal last year before winning the gold medal this year. I find coaching in the Futures Program to be very rewarding, said Reichard. The kids are enthusiastic and want to play. It s an overall good experience for them because they get exposure and are around hockey all the time. It s also a good opportunity for me because I m able to teach something I m passionate about. It s a lot of fun. The National Futures Championship features the top athletes from more than 5,000 of the program s nation-wide participants. After receiving five months of elite-level training, Futures athletes compete in regional tournaments where the top players are then selected to compete at the national championship tournament. 2
