Live Audio: Commentators: Ken Clemens (PBP), Mike Diebold (Analyst) THE OPENING TIP What Just Happened SAGINAW VALLEY STATE RECAP On Senior Day, it was a pair of seniors who combined for 33 points in a win over Saginaw Valley State. The win for Davenport was crucial as they entered the game tied with the Cardinals for the eighth spot in the GLIAC standings. The top eight teams will advance to the postseason tournament. There are just two games remaining in the regular season for Davenport. Emily Severn scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds in 40 minutes, while Hannah Wilkerson tied her career-high with 18 points in 34 minutes. HOW IT HAPPENED -The Cardinals were strong early building a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes. Davenport would score the next five points to make it 7-5 at the 5:52 mark. SVSU then went on a 11-2 run to build a 18-7 lead with 4:16 remaining in the opening quarter. Severn hit a three to end the run and the Panthers trailed after 10 minutes. -The Cardinals scored the first points of the second quarter to build a lead but then the Panthers made a run to cut the lead down to at the 4:59 mark after another Severn triple. The Cardinals kept the Panthers at arms length however and built a lead with 2:18 left until halftime. The Panthers closed the gap to at intermission. -The second half began wonderfully for Davenport as they went on a 13-4 run to lead with 4:08 left in the quarter. DU started the third 5-of-7 from the floor while SVSU was 2-of-7. The back-andforth continued as the Cardinals once again regained the lead at after a Hannah Settingsgaard jumper at the 1:17 mark. SVSU led at the end of the quarter as there were four ties and two lead changes in the third. -Laurel Jacqmain bagged a three-ball to start the fourth quarter and the Cardinals led DU fought back and took a lead with 6:30 left after a layup by Wilkerson. The Panthers took a lead with 59 seconds left after a pair of free throws by Jenna Falkenberg. Anna Hall missed a three on the other end and then Wilkerson converted a layup with an assist from Claire Austin with 24 seconds left for a three-point lead. 2 THE OPENING TIP CONTINUES Wilkerson was clutch down the stretch and made two free throws to extend the lead back to Jacqmain misfired from deep and SVSU got the ball out of bounds with three seconds left. Austin then stole the inbounds and was fouled immediately. She canned both freebies to give DU a win and snap a nine-game losing streak. INSIDE THE BOX -The contest featured a total of six ties and five lead changes. Davenport shot 45.3 percent including 50 percent in the second half. SVSU shot 41.8 percent but just 35.7 percent in the fourth quarter. The Panthers blocked five shots to none for the Cardinals. -Falkenberg recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. She went 7-of-10 at the free throw line and blocked two shots. -Amanda Merz finished with 12 points going 6-of- 8 from the floor. She also had six assists and three rebounds in 36 minutes. -Jacqmain led all scorers with 28 points including 18 in the first half. The Panthers had a great deal of success in the NAIA and Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and hope to translate that into success at the next level. The Panthers have posted a record of (.837) as a program over 15 years and won 11 straight WHAC regular season championships. They also won nine WHAC Tournament titles and appeared in the NAIA Tournament for the last 13 seasons. Playoff Scenarios With two regular season games left, the Panthers have a one-game lead for the eighth and final spot in the upcoming GLIAC Tournament. The Panthers are one game back of Ferris State for seventh and are one game ahead of Tiffin and Saginaw Valley State. Tiffin and Saginaw Valley also play each other this week on Saturday. Ferris State takes on Purdue Northwest and GVSU. If the Panthers lose the final two games they could still make the playoffs, because they have a second tiebreaker over TU and SVSU. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head and DU is 1-1 against those teams. If DU wins on Thursday at NMU, they will have secured a spot with a SVSU and TU loss. Panthers vs. Wildcats/Huskies After a longer layoff than normal due to postponements, the Davenport women's basketball team came out slow in the first quarter and could not recover in a loss to Northern Michigan. The Wildcats held the Panthers to just five points in the opening quarter and DU shot 15.4 percent. The Panthers trailed 18-5 after the first quarter but held their own and outscored the Wildcats over the final three quarters including a edge in the fourth quarter. It was the third meeting between the teams with NMU now taking a 2-1 lead in the series. Davenport falls to 7-10 overall and 5-5 in the GLIAC. The Davenport women's basketball team had to travel to Lake Superior State on Thursday (Jan. 25) to play a rescheduled GLIAC contest against Michigan Tech. The Huskies came away with an win over the Panthers and the second quarter was the main reason. Michigan Tech (15-3, 9-2 GLIAC) outscored Davenport (7-11, 5-6 GLIAC) by a 24-4 margin in the quarter. DU was outscored by a combined eight points in the other three quarters. Davenport finished shooting 37.3 percent from the floor (19-of-51) including 4-of-11 behind the arc. Michigan Tech shot 53.2 percent overall (33-of-62) and were a stellar 7-of-12 from behind the arc. A Quick Look at Northern Michigan Northern Michigan concludes their home schedule this upcoming week. Last week Northern Michigan started the week with a victory over Lake Superior State University on Thursday, outscoring the Lakers 14-5 in the fourth quarter. On Saturday, the Wildcats started and finished the game strong, scoring over 20 points in each quarter to take a victory over Ferris State. The Wildcats are on their longest winning streak of the season, having won their last three games. NMU defeated Saginaw Valley State University They then followed it with their two victories last weekend. Fueling the run has been improved shooting from the perimeter. The squad has hit 41 percent from the three-point line during the streak, with Lutz hitting a team-best seven while juniors Sydney Dillinger, Emily Schramek and sophomore Baleigh Delorit adding five made threes each. A Quick Look at Michigan Tech Michigan Tech recorded two more GLIAC Conference wins last week against Ferris State (80-63) and Lake Superior State (75-65). The Huskies extended their winning streak to eight games and swept the regular season series with both teams. Tech enters the final week of the regular season with an overall record of 22-3 and 16-2 in the conference. Michigan Tech clinched the 2018 GLIAC North Division title with the two wins last week over Ferris State and Lake Superior State. Michigan Tech remained at No. 17 in this week's edition of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, announced Tuesday by the national office. The Huskies have been ranked as high as 10th this season and held the 17th spot in each of the last two polls. Michigan Tech earned 216 points again in this week's poll and are one of two GLIAC teams ranked in the top 25.
