Junior Michaela Kikendall (Morristown, Ind./Morristown) paced the Pride with nine points, while freshman Lanie Allen (East Noble, Ind./East Noble) added seven points and six rebounds. The 36 points was PNW s lowest output of the season and the team shot just 26 percent (13-for-50) from the field for the game. The Pride were also plagued by 26 turnovers Saturday, which helped lead to 19 steals for the Lakers. SCOUTING THE WILDCATS Northern Michigan University lost to No. 18 Michigan Tech University last Sunday afternoon in GLIAC action, 61-54, in Houghton, Mich. NMU was led by sophomore forward Erin Honkala, who grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and scored 10 points for the Wildcats. Freshman guard Lexi Smith led Northern Michigan with a game-best 19 points and had two steals in the loss. Through 20 games this season, Smith leads NMU in points (12.0 ppg) and assists (1.8 apg). Sophomore guard Shae Rhonehouse led the Pride with 12 points, had three rebounds and two assists. Senior forward Jessica Kiser also scored in double figures with 10 points and also pulled down five rebounds. Taylor Hodell came off the bench to score 13 points and grab eight boards for the Wildcats. Lexi Smith and Tess Weatherly scored 13 point and 11 points, respectivley, in the win. NEW SURROUNDINGS Purdue University Northwest is competing in its first season at the NCAA Division II level after playing in the NAIA since The Pride join the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) along with fellow newcomer Davenport University (Mich.), who also made the move from the NAIA. PNW will play in the GLIAC North Division this season. LEADERS IN THE CLASSROOM The Purdue University Northwest women s basketball program showed its dominance in the classroom during the academic year, earning the top GPA in the NAIA after the Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll was announced by the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) this summer. The Pride earned a GPA, which was better than over 200 schools in the NAIA, and finished second out of all the respective divisions, including NCAA Div. I, Div. II, Div. III and junior/community colleges. HISTORIC VICTORY On Thursday, November 30, the Purdue Northwest University women s basketball team recorded a pair of firsts in program history. The Pride defeated Davenport University (Mich.), 63-59, in Grand Rapids, Mich., to get their first win of the season. The win gave PNW its first victory in GLIAC play and its first victory at the NCAA Division II level. Sophomore guard Shae Rhonehouse led all scorers with a game-high 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while senior forward Ellie Michalski tallied a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Pride. HISTORIC VICTORY, PART II On Saturday, December 30, the Pride defeated University of Indianapolis, It was PNW s first victory over an established NCAA Division II opponent since December 23, 2008, against St. Joseph s College (Ind.), 95-80, in Hammond. CLEANING UP THE GLASS With six rebounds on Thursday, December 7, senior forward Ellie Michalski became just the 22nd player in Purdue Northwest women s basketball history to record 500 or more career rebounds. 7 TOM MEGYESI HEAD COACH 11th SEASON AT PURDUE NORTHWEST Tom Megyesi enters his 11th season as the head coach of the Purdue Northwest women s basketball program beginning in He has continued to transform the women s basketball program thanks in part to his high-octane offensive attack. The Hall of Fame coach led the Pride to their sixth-straight 20-win season during the campaign, including their fourth trip in five years to the NAIA Div. II National Championship. Megyesi led the Pride to a 24-9 overall record with an 18-3 record in CCAC play in the season, with senior Cassidy Deno and senior Darien Thompson being named to the All-CCAC team. That wasn t the only honor for Deno, as she was named the CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Yeat, an NAIA Scholar-Athlete and received NAIA Second-Team All-American honors. The Hall of Fame coach led the Peregrines to their fifthstraight 20-win season during the campaign, including their third trip in four years to the NAIA Div. II National Championship. Megyesi led the Peregrines to a 22-9 overall record with a 13-6 record in CCAC play in the season, with junior Cassidy Deno and sophomore Katie Wampler being named to the All-CCAC team. During the campaign, Purdue Calumet finished 21-8 overall and captured its second-straight Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference South Division Title with a 12-5 mark in league play. Purdue Calumet was ranked as high as No. 8 in the NAIA Coaches Top 25 National Poll, which marked the team s highest-ever ranking. Under Megyesi s tutelage, junior transfer Jada Buggs was named an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American, while junior center Patrice McBee led the nation in field goal percentage and was named NAIA National Player of the Week to go along with four all-ccac selections, four CCAC Player of the Weeks, and three CCAC All-Academic selections. Megyesi led the Peregrines to perhaps their best season to date in , as Purdue Calumet -- with an overall record of captured both the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament title, advanced to its second-straight National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament, and won its first national tournament contest in school history with an opening-round victory over Oregon Tech. 8 That victory also made Megyesi the program s all-time winningest coach in program history with his 118th win. In nine seasons, Megyesi has accumulated a career record of (.583). For the Peregines performance in , Megyesi was honored with both the CCAC Coach of the Year and NAIA Region IV Coach of the Year awards, both firsts in his career at Purdue Calumet. Under Megyesi, Purdue Calumet has become the one of the NAIA Division II s most prolific offenses, while having nine players join the 1,000-point club during his tenure. During that time, the Black and Gold have put their imprint on the school record book, setting both individual and team marks. His last four teams have found the top of the school s scoring list, including s record-breaking offense that put up 2,555 points on the year. During the campaign, the Peregrines ranked first in the CCAC with 75.9 percent shooting from the charity stipe while ranking third in rebound margin with a The Black and Gold also ranked 19th in the NAIA with 3.67 blocks per game and 43.1 total rebounds per game, while also ranking 24th in scoring offense (75.1) and defensive rebounds per contest (29.1) In , the Peregrines ranked in the NAIA s Top 10 in field goal percentage (45.6 percent), 3-point percentage (35.2 percent) and scoring offense, averaging a crisp 79.9 points per game. Purdue Calumet also broke the single-game scoring mark during the season in a league victory over high-scoring rival Olivet Nazarene. CCAC All-Academic recognition, three have become NAIA Daktronics Scholar Athletes, and one has participated in the esteemed Red Cross/NAIA Leadership Program. Before Purdue Calumet, Megyesi spent 24 seasons ( ) at local Lake Central High School, guiding the girl s basketball program to a record in that span. Megyesi wrapped up his coaching career at Lake Central ranked 11th in Indiana girl s basketball history in career victories. During his time with the Indians, Megyesi s squads racked up 11 sectional championships, four regional titles, three semi-state crowns, a state runner-up finish in 1998 and a state championship in That resume proved worthy of perhaps Megyesi s greatest honor -- his inclusion in the 14th Women s Induction Class into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in the spring of The Okemos, Mich. native received numerous coaching honors during his tenure at Lake Central, highlighted by his Indiana Coaches of Girl s Sports Association Coach-of-the- Year honors in 1994 and Megyesi graduated from Michigan State University in 1974 with a degree in physical education. He currently resides in Merrillville, Ind. with his wife of over 40 years, Jan. The couple has three grown children, Mike of Valparaiso, Ind., Lori of Valparaiso, Ind. and Mark of Chesterton, Ind., as well as four grandchilden; Thomas, David, Oliver and Grayson. Purdue Calumet continued its progression under Megyesi in , reaching the 20- win plateau for the second-straight season. The Black and Gold went overall and 17-5 in the CCAC, climbing as high as No. 13 in the NAIA Div. II Coaches Poll during the season. The squad beat five nationally-ranked opponents, earning a national tournament berth for just the third time program history. The Peregrines had a breakout season in , tallying overall record and a 10-2 mark in conference action en route to the program s first trip to the CCAC Div. II Tournament championship game. The Black and Gold s.697 winning percentage was the program s highest in nine years, when the team went Purdue Calumet s success under Megyesi has been recognized by the rest of the conference and the NAIA, as he has seen 30 athletes receive All-CCAC recognition -- including 13 first-team selections -- two CCAC Freshman-of-the-Year accolades, 23 CCAC All- Academic selections, four NAIA Scholar-Athletes four NAIA All-Americans. The future of the Peregrines program grows brighter each season with Megyesi s continuous success on the recruiting front: seven of his recruits have gone on to score more than 1,000 points during their time in Hammond. Megyesi s teams have also excelled in the classroom, as the , and teams earned the NAIA s prestigous Scholar Team Award with a cumulative grade-point average above 3.0.
