GLIAC Debut Davenport (1-4) hosts Grand Valley State (5-1) Saturday, Dec. 2 1 p.m. DU Student Center Grand Rapids, Mich. presented by LMCU Live Video (both games): Ken Clemens (PBP), Ed Keating (Analyst) The Opening Tip Panthers Drop a Pair in Pueblo Westminster (UTAH) Recap The Davenport women's basketball team slipped to 1-3 overall with a loss to Westminster (UT) on Friday afternoon at the first game of the Al Kaly Shrine Classic hosted by Colorado State-Pueblo. Davenport could not recover from a slow start scoring just seven points in the first quarter and trailed for most of the contest. DU shot 6-of-26 in the first half and 14-of-29 in the second half. HOW IT HAPPENED -Davenport scored the first five points as Kelsey Crockett hit a three-pointer and Kortney Deurloo added a basket at the 5:53 mark. -Westminster went on a 10-4 run over the next five minutes and closed out the first quarter with a 12-7 lead. -The Griffins led by nine points on five different occasions and took a 12-point lead at with 1:06 left until halftime. -Davenport came out strong in the third quarter and used a 17-6 run to get within one at with 5:44 left in the quarter. -The Panthers were within one point on three occasions in the quarter but Westminster closed out the quarter on an 8-0 run to lead Davenport did not go without a fight using an 8-0 run to trail with 4:47 left in the game. DU was within one possession three different times in the final 3:08, but could not gain a lead or tie the game. INSIDE THE BOX -Senior Emily Severn scored a team-high 20 points going 7-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 at the foul line. -Senior Kelsey Crockett was the other player in double figures with 10 points going 2-of-3 behind the arc. -Davenport shot 8-of-10 at the free throw line including 4-of-4 in the second half. -Hunter Krebs had a double-double for Westminster with 14 points and 11 rebounds. -Westminster went 23-of-51 from the floor including 6-of-17 from the arc. 2 The Opening Tip Continues... CSU-Pueblo Recap The second game of the Al Kaly Shrine Classic for the women's basketball team featured a matchup against the host Colorado State-Pueblo Thunderwolves entering the night as the fifthranked team in NCAA Division II. The Panthers hung around but could not pull off the upset with a loss on Saturday night. Davenport falls to 1-4 overall and 0-3 on the road while CSU-Pueblo moves to 2-2 overall. This was the first meeting between the two schools and the highest ranked opponent Davenport has faced in D2. HOW IT HAPPENED -The Thunderwolves outscored the Panthers in each of the first three quarters to lead by 11 points after 30 minutes. The Panthers did win the fourth quarter by three points, 16-13, to make the final outcome eight points at CSU-Pueblo scored the game's first five points on a basket by Jade Adams and three-pointer by Katie Jones. Amanda Merz got the team's first points for DU with 7:05 left in the first quarter. Emily Severn's three-pointer with 4:56 left in the quarter cut the lead to 9-7. The Thunderwolves increased their lead to but the Panthers scored the last four points of the quarter on a basket by Rylie Stiles and Taylor Smith. -CSU-Pueblo scored on back-to-back three's to start the second quarter increasing their lead to at the 7:49 mark. The lead moved to double digits at after Molly Rohrer hit two free throws at the 4:53 mark. Smith scored just before halftime as DU went into the locker room down The Thunderwolves built their lead up to at the 6:35 mark of the third quarter. Severn converted a three-point play at the 5:15 mark to cut it to DU cut it further down to seven (47-40) on a Smith layup with 3:50 left in the quarter. The Panthers ended the quarter trailing after Stiles split at the line with 38 seconds left. -The Panthers have shown some fight in the fourth quarter this season and that continued with five straight points by Jenna Falkenberg. Severn made a layup and Kortney Deurloo followed as DU trailed with 4:46 to play. Rohrer made a pair at the line with 2:34 remaining to give CSU-Pueblo a lead. Jones then made a clutch triple to push the lead up to with 1:55 left. Merz drove in for two at the 1:30 mark and Severn canned a three with 54 ticks left for a deficit. Rohrer's layup on the next possession made it a two-score game with 38 seconds to go. DU could not score for the remainder of the game and four free throws later it was the final tally of INSIDE THE BOX -Davenport struggled to find their shot going 22- of-64 from the floor. The defense kept them in it allowing 36.5 percent shooting by CSU-Pueblo. The free throw line was the key stat as the Thunderwolves were 25-of-30 compared to 11- of-20 by Davenport. -Severn scored eight of her team-high 15 points in the second half. The Panthers entered the game ranked second in NAIA Division II and showed why with a convincing 36-point rout over the Fighting Saints. Davenport built a halftime lead and never looked back improving to 8-1 on the season. St. Francis shot just 32.3 percent for the game and were 66.7 percent at the free throw line. DU countered by shooting 52.2 percent from the floor and 67.9 percent at the line. DU scored 60 points in the paint and another 33 points off turnovers. Tiesha Stokes scored 19 points and recorded eight steals. Alex Law notched 13 points. floor overall and 2-of-10 behind the arc. Severn led the team with nine rebounds and played 33 minutes. -Merz finished with nine points, four rebounds and two assists also in 33 minutes. -Smith had a season-high eight points and two steals in 17 minutes. -Rohrer finished with 20 points for the Thunderwolves going 10-of-10 at the charity stripe. -Katie Cunningham added eight points, 12 rebounds and four assists in 32 minutes for CSU- Pueblo NUMERICAL Roster # Name Yr. The Panthers had a great deal of success in the NAIA and Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and hope to translate that into success at the next level. The Panthers have posted a record of (.837) as a program over 15 years and won 11 straight WHAC regular season championships. They also won nine WHAC Tournament titles and appeared in the NAIA Tournament for the last 13 seasons. Head of the Program With the new adventure of joining the GLIAC and NCAA DII also brings a new head coach in Rick Albro. The veteran coach has coached at the NCAA Division I, II and NAIA levels with both men's and women's programs during his career. He recently was an assistant coach at Western Michigan University starting in October He was also on the sidelines for the University of Detroit-Mercy during the season. Albro also was an assistant coach at Michigan State University under Suzy Merchant ( ) and a men's assistant at Cleveland State University ( ). Panthers vs. Pride/Lakers The Panthers have previous experience playing both of this week's opponents during their NAIA days. It has been a while since DU has played either team with the most recent example coming back on March 14, The Panthers picked up a win over Purdue-Calumet (changed their name to Purdue-Northwest since) in the NAIA National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. Davenport is 6-2 against the former Purdue-Calumet having won the last six meetings. The average margin of victory is 25.5 points during the six-game win streak for the Panthers. Grand Valley State and Davenport haven't in nearly 14 years and the Lakers have won both contests. This will be the first time that GVSU will be playing at Davenport. It is a homecoming for former coach Mike Williams who coached the Panthers to prominence from to He won 130 games in those four seasons including a NAIA Division II national runner-up finish in the season. What We Return The Panthers will be returning seven players who saw action on the varsity team last season. Senior Emily Severn is the lone starter returning and was named Second Team All-WHAC a season ago. Severn made 19 starts and played in all 35 games. She ranked second on the team with 11.2 points per game and was ninth in the WHAC in 3-point shooting (36.9) and 10th in 3-pointers made per game (2.14). Falkenberg was named First Team All-WHAC despite averaging just 15 minutes per game off the bench. She averaged 9.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest. She was second in the league and 14th nationally in blocked shots (54) and ranked fourth in the WHAC in rebounding. She had five double-doubles on the season and scored a career-high 26 points at Lawrence Tech on Jan. 21. She also set the school record with 23 rebounds against Olivet Nazarene on Dec. 13. A Quick Look at Purdue-Northwest The Pride of Purdue-Northwest are looking for their first win of the season as they enter their first year in NCAA Division II and the GLIAC. Three of those losses have been by less than 10 points. The Pride have already played Illinois-Springfield twice in a span of 15 days falling in Rolla, Missouri on a neutral court (Nov. 10) and then at home, 80-72, on Nov. 25 in their last outing. Shae Rhonehouse let it fly going 10-of-23 (3-8 3's) from the floor and finished with 24 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Ellie Michalski recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds (four offensive) in 32 minutes. Lanie Allen scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds in 27 minutes. The Pride posted a 24-9 record last season and fell in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament to Indiana East (85-80) in Sioux City, Iowa. A Quick Look at Grand Valley State The Lakers jumped out to a 4-0 start this season with wins over Maryville, Missouri-St. Louis, Indianapolis and Lewis. Those wins came by an average of points per game. Their only loss came on Nov. 25 at the Bellarmine Thanksgiving Classic against Southern Indiana, who is receiving votes in this week's WBCA Division II poll. The loss to USI was followed by a win over the host Bellarmine. Natalie Koenig leads the team in scoring (13.8 ppg) while Jenn DeBoer (12.3 ppg) and Taylor Parmley (10.2 ppg) are also in double figures.
