Khaled El Ahmad, Sr., D Wright State: Wright State University enters the week of play with a overall record and 2-2 mark in Horizon League play following a tough, 2-1 overtime loss to Detroit on Friday (Oct. 8). The Raiders have played seven one-goal games in 2004, boasting a 3-4 mark in those games. WSU is led in scoring by junior forward Ricky Strong s seven goals in 11 games while sophomore midfielder Tony Labudovski sits second with seven points on three goals and one assist. Junior Jason Balach has played every minute of the season in goal for the Raiders where he owns a 1.43 GAA to go with 47 saves and a.746 save percentage. Wright State is coached by fourth-year head man Mike Tracy who boasts a all-time record. TWO GAMES ON TAP FOR HOMECOMING WEEK The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men s soccer team will be a major focal point this week as the university celebrates PantherFest 2004 for its annual Homecoming activities. The Panthers will host a pair of Horizon League contests beginning with a Wednesday (Oct. 13) battle with UW-Green Bay followed by a Friday (Oct. 15) showdown with Wright State. Both games are set for 3:00 p.m. at Engelmann Field. Other homecoming activities include one women s soccer game and Midnight Mayhem for the two basketball programs. PANTHERS STRUGGLE TO SCORE IN DROPPING A PAIR The offensive struggles continued for the UWM men s soccer team as it dropped a pair of road contests this past week. Milwaukee fell 2-1 to instate rival Wisconsin on Wednesday before dropping a 1-0 tilt to UIC on Sunday. The loss to UIC ended Milwaukee s 25-game Horizon League unbeaten streak that dated back to October of The Panthers, who are currently overall and in Horizon League play, have scored just two goals in their last three games despite holding a decided advantage in shots. Unfortunately, the last time UWM was below the.500 mark this late in the season came during the 1998 season. CHANCELLOR S CUP ON THE TABLE Wednesday s matchup with UW-Green Bay is not only a contest between longstanding Horizon League teams, but it also marks the battle for the Chancellor s Cup. The Cup, which originally began with a tournament of Wisconsin state schools in the 1980 s, is now given to the winner in the annual UWM-UWGB game. The Panthers currently own the Cup thanks to a 2-0 victory in Green Bay last season. UWM has dominated the series of late, winning the last four matchups in a row while posting a record in the last 13 meetings. UWM has met UWGB 32 times on the soccer field, one more than any other opponent in program history. Milwaukee leads the all-time series HOME SWEET HOME If it seems like its been a long time since the UWM men s soccer team has played a home game its because it has been. Wednesday s game versus UWGB will mark Milwaukee s first home appearance in over a month, a span that included six consecutive road games. The Panthers are just 1-1 at Engelmann this season after splitting a pair of contests at the Coca-Cola Panther Invitational Sept The UWM players can pretty much settle in the rest of the way as six of the last seven regular season games will be played on campus. WINNING WAYS AT ENGELMANN In addition to the obvious benefits of playing at home, the UWM men s soccer team is happy to return to Engelmann Field thanks to
3 UWM MEN S SOCCER WEEKLY RELEASE OCTOBER 11, 2004 PAGE THREE their recent domination on the home field. Since the 2001 campaign the Panthers have posted a record at Engelmann Field and a record againt Horizon League competition. The lone loss came against Butler in the 2001 league championship game while the tie came last season versus UIC. Milwaukee will bring a nine-game home Horizon League unbeaten streak into Wednesday s tilt. FURTSCH ACTIVE ON BOTH ENDS It has long been known that Trent Furtsch is one of the elite defensive players in not only the Horizon League, but quite possibly the region. However, thanks to a recent offensive hot streak the creative Furtsch has garnered the recognition he deserves. The leftfooted defender has scored each of UWM s last two goals by scoring the lone marker at Bradley and then last Wednesday at Wisconsin. Furtsch, who has just three goals in his four-year career, has always been a flashy playmaker from his left back position. In his career the Shorewood-native has 11 assists to go with the three goals. PANTHER BENCH RUNS DEEP One major strength of the 2004 Milwaukee men s soccer team is the exceptional depth displayed at each position. Thus far this year 24 different players have seen time with 17 of them earning at least one start. Only three players, defenders Trent Furtsch and Ian Hoelker and midfielder Chris Brisson have started all ten games with four more garnering nine starts. Eleven different Panthers have notched at least one point this season with six different players scoring at least one goal. Senior forward Antou Jallow leads the team with seven points on three goals and an assist while freshman Dan Horst and sophomore Dale Weiler sit second with six points apiece. MICKSCHL REMAINS SOLID BETWEEN THE PIPES Despite a pair of losses this past week UWM sophomore Eric Mickschl remains the top goalkeeper in the Horizon League. Mickschl, who has allowed just six goals in seven games and 611:01 of playing time, leads all league keepers with a 0.88 goals against average. The sophomore has made 18 saves on the season while registering a.750 save percetage which is good for fourth among the league leaders. In Mickschl s six starts this season just once has he allowed more than one goal in a game while registering a 4-0 shutout versus league foe Detroit on Sept. 25. REACHING NEW HEIGHTS The road to the Horizon League men s soccer title has gone through Milwaukee each of the last three seasons. And, if the preaseaon coaches poll is any indication, then 2004 shouldn t be any different. In the poll released earlier this month Milwaukee was once again picked to top the league following regular season championships in each of the last three seasons. With the three straight titles UWM joined Evansville as the only programs to win three straight regular season titles and can become the only school to win four straight with a championship in The preseason coaches poll is listed below: No. School Pts 1 Milwaukee (6) 48 2 Butler (2) 42 3 Illinois-Chicago 32 4 Detroit/Wright State 30 6 Loyola 22 7 Cleveland State 12 8 UW-Green Bay 9 LOUIS BENNETT HEAD COACH ( ) Two wins. Just two wins is all University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee head coach Louis Bennett needs to officially solidify himself as the winningest coach in Milwaukee soccer history. Bennett, in his ninth season, owns a career record, good for a.657 winning percentage. The winning percentage is currently the best mark among any of the four coaches in the 31- year history of the program while the 108 wins is just one shy of the schoolrecord 109 posted by the program s first head coach, Dan Harris. Furthermore, thanks to a mark in 2002, Bennett owns the school s best single-season winning percentage while setting a schoolrecord in wins. In fact, thanks to 18, 19, and 16 wins from , Bennett owns the most wins in a three-season stretch in school and Horizon League history. The 2003 campaign, Bennett s eighth, saw him win his third consecutive Horizon League Coach of the Year award while leading UWM to its fifth straight winning season. In addition, with a 4-1 defeat of Western Michigan, the Panthers won an NCAA Tournament game for the second consecutive season, the first two NCAA Tournament victories in school history. In addition, due to his ties to the European Soccer community, Bennett helped arrange UWM s 18-day, 10-game European tour this past summer. Bennett led the Panthers on the trip through the Czech Republic and Germany as the group visited major cities such as Prague and Nurnberg as well as local villages like Feucht, Germany and Velky Ujezd, Czech Republic. All of this came on the heels of a record-breaking 2002 season which included a school-record record, a No. 8 national ranking, the highest in school history, an NCAA best 19 consecutive wins, and the program s first-ever NCAA Tournament win. Furthermore, Bennett earned NSCAA Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year honors as well as Horizon League Coach of the Year accolades. The 2001 season, Bennett s sixth as head man, saw UWM post an 18-5 overall record, including a perfect 7-0 mark in Horizon League play. Under Bennett s direction, the Panthers advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1990 and for the fourth time in school history. Bennett first came to UWM in 1993 as an assistant coach to Brian Tompkins. That year, Bennett helped direct a team that also won the regular-season conference title with an undefeated record. The England-native was then named the head coach in 1996 upon Tompkins departure to coach at Yale. Bennett recorded the best winning-percentage for a first-year coach in UWM history, as the team went that season. In 1997, his second year as head coach, he was named the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year for the first time after leading the Panthers to the regular-season crown. He then guided UWM to the championship game of the conference tournament. A native of Great Britain, Bennett has made the Milwaukee area his home since Bennett is married to the former Julie Harper of Milwaukee. The couple has three children - Eston (13), Yve (10), Louis (9) - and resides in Shorewood.
