His record at the school is 20-17, and his overall collegiate head coaching record is Last year, Ryan led the Panthers to a mark - their best in seven seasons - and a trip to the MCC Semifinals for the first time ever. Ryan s Background: Prior to coming to Milwaukee, the head coach spent 15 stellar seasons at UW-Platteville. At Platteville, Ryan - the winningest coach in NCAA Division III history - led the Pioneers to four NCAA Division III National Championships and eight conference championships. 2 the ranks of the NCAA for the season. Ryan has also won gold medals at the 1993 U.S. Olympic Festival and 1995 World University Games. The Chester, Pa., native also spent eight seasons at the University of Wisconsin under Bill Cofield and Steve Yoder, and has worked at the College of Racine in Wisconsin, and at Sun Valley High School in Philadelphia. Inside The Illinois Game: Poor shooting, pressure defense, and a very good opponent spelled a long night for UWM last Wednesday in an loss to Illinois. The Panthers shot just 22 percent from the field and fell behind at halftime. Clay Tucker had 16 points to lead the Panthers, who did grab 14 offensive rebounds. Bouncing Back: In the short time Bo Ryan has been the head coach at UWM, the Panthers have made a habit of breaking any losing streak before it starts. So far this year, the Panthers are 2-0 in games following a loss. And, under Ryan, UWM is 12-3 in games following a loss. Starting Fast: Despite the loss last Wednesday night, the Panthers record of 5-3 is their best after eight games since the season. UWM opened that season with eight straight wins, including a victory over Wisconsin. Taking Care Of The Ball: The season numbers show the Panthers are taking good care of the ball. For the year, UWM has just 94 turnovers in eight games, an average of under 12 per game. Sophomore Dan Weisse has settled nicely into the point guard position. His four turnovers Wednesday night were a season high, but Weisse also has played three games this season without a turnover. For the season, Weisse has just 13 turnovers compared to 26 assists. Speaking Of Turnovers... And Defense: UWM struggled to slow a potent Illinois attack last Wednesday night, but for the year the defensive numbers are still solid. UWM has forced more than 15 turnovers per game, and limited opponents to 46 percent shooting from the field. Highlighted defensive efforts include the 21 turnovers UWM forced against Valparaiso, and the 38 percent shooting mark the Panthers held Bethune-Cookman to two weeks ago. The Panthers lead the MCC in turnover margin, and are second in turnover-toassist ratio. Board Work: The biggest positive to come out of the loss at Illinois was the Panthers work on the boards. UWM grabbed 14 offensive rebounds against the Illini. Freshman James Wright has made a difference for UWM inside, leading the team in rebounding at just over seven boards per game. Wright recorded a career-high 12 rebounds against Lipscomb, and has eight rebounds in each of the last three games. Other MCC Numbers: UWM s three-point shooting places it at the top of those statistical categories in the MCC. The Panthers lead the league in threepoint shots made, and are second in three-point shooting percentage. Downer Valparaiso was the second largest non-conference crowd in Klotsche Center history. Only the 4,333 that witnessed the Panthers battle with Wisconsin a season ago ranks higher. In total last season, attendance was up 161 percent. And, season ticket sales for the season have set records. With much larger crowds expected as the conference season approaches, the 2,670 average for the two regular season home games so far this season is already an eight percent increase from a season ago. Speaking Of The Fans: UWM is also getting the opportunity to play in front of big crowds on the road. Saturday s sold-out game at Wisconsin is expected to approach or set an all-time road attendance record for UWM. The game at Iowa earlier this year moved to fifth on the all-time road attendance list. The game at Illinois drew 12,312 fans, the 13th largest crowd to ever see the Panthers play. UWM Teams Up With CBS-58: Officials from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and WDJT-TV in Milwaukee have formalized an agreement to provide greater television exposure to the UWM basketball programs. The agreement calls for as many at least six more regular season men s and women s games to air on CBS-58, and its sister station, over-the-air TV-41. TV- 41 is also scheduled to air games from the MCC Tournament. Officially, the package began with the Panthers game at the University of Iowa Nov. 19. Upcoming games in the package include the Panthers men s game at UW-Green Bay on Jan. 6, UWM road games at Butler and Wright State Feb. 15 and 17, and the Panthers home game with Cleveland State Feb. 22. The schedule also includes two additional women s games, Mar. 1 at Butler and Mar. 4 at Wright State. Both games will air on TV-41. Plus, a men s and women s doubleheader is planned for Dec. 30 at the Klotsche Center. The women will host Missouri at 3 p.m., and the men will host Colorado at 7 p.m. The games will air on either TV-41 or CBS-58, with their exact station location to be determined next week. The Coach On TV, Too: CBS-58 is also planning The Bo Ryan Show, Sunday nights at 10:30 p.m. The show, hosted by Rock Rote, will premiere Jan. 7, with the show having a second airing on TV-41 at 10:30 on Monday nights. Pre-Season Picks: Officially, the Panthers have been picked for third in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in a poll of the league s coaches, sports information directors, and media members. Other pre-season polls have placed the Panthers as high as second. Senior Chad Angeli is a pre-season first-team all-mcc selection, while sophomore Clay Tucker is a second-team selection.

4 Recapping The Season: The fortunes of the UWM men s basketball program changed quickly with the arrival of new coach Bo Ryan. The record the Panthers put together a season ago was their best in seven years, and their win over UWGB in the MCC Tournament quarterfinals put them in the league tournament semfinals for the first time ever. UWM won 10 times at home, including a 5-2 mark against league foes. The Panthers also filled the Klotsche Center not once but twice, setting an attendance record against Wisconsin, then breaking the record against UW-Green Bay. Experience Counts: The edition of the Panthers is a deeper squad than last year s unit, and it has more collegiate experience. UWM started three freshmen a season ago, and brought another freshman and a junior college transfer off the bench. This year, the first three players off the Panther bench all started at least one game a season ago, and sophomore Ronnie Jones started all 29 games. True freshman James Wright is the only player in the top eight without collegiate experience prior to this season. Sophomore Justin Lettenberger is also expected to make contributions off the bench, with true freshmen Dylan Page and Kevin Schifferer adding further depth. A Tournament Tested Schedule: In all, UWM will play five teams - including Wisconsin - that qualified for post-season play a year ago. UWM owns a win over five-time NCAA qualifier Valparaiso before falling to Illinois. Still to come, the Panthers Butler (Jan. 20 and Feb. 15), which played in the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Colorado (Dec. 30), meanwhile, made the NIT field. UWM s non-conference schedule also includes potential 2001 NCAA qualifiers Iowa and San Diego. Checking The Record Book: Current Panthers Chad Angeli and Clay Tucker continue to move up in the UWM record book in various categories. Angeli has moved to seventh on the all-time Panther scoring list, and remains number one on the all-time field goal percentage list. Angeli is also 10th in career rebounding, first in career free throws made, and fourth in career free throw percentage. Tucker is seventh all-time in career threepoint field goals made, and seventh in career three-point field goal percentage. Series History: Wisconsin has won 16 of the 17 matchups with UWM over the years. The Panthers lone victory in the series came in 1992, when the Panthers won in Madison. Last Year s Matchup: It was Bo Ryan s Klotsche Center debut, and the Panthers hung in with the Badgers before falling UWM was within three at the half, but the Badgers wore away at the Panthers, outscoring UWM in the second half. Clay Tucker was injured during the game and played just 18 minutes. Jason Frederick scored 12 points off the bench to lead UWM. CURRENT PANTHERS IN THE RECORD BOOKS Career Scoring Leaders 1. Jan. 18 Wright St. 7 p.m. Badger Scouting Report: The Bagders are 4-0 since Dick Bennett stepped down as head coach and assistant Brad Soderberg ascended into the top position. Wisconsin opened the season with a loss at Tennessee, but has won six straight since. They own wins earlier over Northern Illinois, Maryland and Xavier, UW-Green Bay, and Ohio. Thursday night, the Badgers handed Temple its sixth straight loss, 66-58, as Ricky Bower scored 19 points off the bench. For the season, Wisconsin s defense has held opponent s to 39 percent shooting from the field, and the Badgers have outrebounded opponents by nearly six boards per game. Kirk Penney and Roy Boone lead Wisconsin offensively - with each averaging more than 13 points per game. This is the second of three games Wisconsin will play against MCC foes. The Badgers host Butler in January, and have already played UW-Green Bay. UWM Vs. The Big 10: The matchup with Wisconsin is UWM s fouth crack at a Big 10 team under Bo Ryan. UWM fell to Wisconsin last year, and have lost at Iowa and Illinois this year. UWM Vs. Ranked Foes: UWM lost to two ranked teams a year ago - Cincinnati and Utah. The Panthers are now facing ranked teams in backto-back games - Illinois is up to fifth in the latest poll, while Wisconsin is ranked 16th. The Wisconsin Way: Ryan has deep ties to many of the high school coaches in Wisconsin, and the state is gaining a strong presence on the Panther roster. Three of the five Panther starters are from the state, and nine of the 14 Panthers expected to dress are from Wisconsin. UWM s incoming recruiting class also has a distinct Wisconsin flavor, with Oshkosh West s Adrian Tigert and Reedsburg s Clayton Hanson having signed national letters of intent during the recent early signing period. Up Next: UWM takes time off for final exams before beginning a threegame homestand. San Diego visits the Klotsche Center Dec. 23, and the Toreros are 7-1 so far this season. Mt. Senario visits Dec. 27, and Colorado comes to Milwaukee on Dec. 30. UWM Men s Basketball Numerical Roster No. Pos. Name Ht. Wt. Yr. Hometown (High School/College) 3 G Matt Ryan So. Men. Falls, Wis.
