Ja Rob McCallum and Anthony Hill did lead Milwaukee with 13 points apiece. 3 2005 NCAA Sweet NCAA Second Round Game #25 The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men s basketball team continues a stretch of three-straight road games with a Thursday night contest at Wright State. Matchup History UWM holds a all-time lead over Wright State thanks to having won 14 of the last 19 meetings between the two schools. Last season, the teams met three times, with UWM winning the first matchup before Wright State won the final two. UWM then beat Wright State earlier this season in Milwaukee, its 12th-straight home win over the Raiders. But, the Panthers have not won in Dayton since First Time With The Raiders Deonte Roberts and Ricky Franklin scored 18 points apiece and UWM overcame a 15-point, first-half deficit to claim a overtime win over Wright State Jan. 16 at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The Panthers actually used a 29-7 run to build a ninepoint second-half lead, but then had to win the game in overtime. In the extra session, Milwaukee took the lead for good on a Franklin free throw with 1:42 left and found some breathing room when James Eayrs buried a three-pointer 30 seconds later. From there, UWM hit 4-of-6 from the line to hang on. Tough Road Swings UWM is in Ohio and Michigan this weekend for the third of its four true league road trips. With the addition of Valpo to the league, the Horizon schedule has returned to a more traditional format, with Wright State Thursday-Saturday (or Friday-Sunday) road trips again the norm. And those trips are always difficult, even in years where UWM would have only one in a season. In looking only at league road swings that involve two games in three days since the campaign, UWM has won both games of a trip three times, split a trip five times and been swept seven times. Last season, Milwaukee split its two games on this road trip, losing at Wright State before winning in Detroit. On The Road Again Thursday s game in Dayton continues a stretch that has UWM on the road for five of its final seven league contests. The Panthers are 4-5 in true road games and 2-2 in neutral site contests this season. UWM went 3-10 in true road games last season and, if you include three neutralsite games, went 5-11 away from Milwaukee in When all is said and done, Milwaukee will have played 13 home games and 18 games away from home. Impressive Winning Margin Not only has UWM claimed four road wins this season, but three of them have come by double digits. That marks the most double-digit road victories since the season, when the Panthers claimed five road wins by 10 or more points. UWM also had five such wins in and six in , when the Panthers actually won four-straight road games by 10-plus points. Busting A Bracket UWM will face Niagara University in this Opponent Checkup Wright State has slowly but surely worked its way back up the Horizon League standings and the Raiders enter play this week just one game out of second place. WSU had won four-straight games until a loss at Butler Saturday. The Raiders had that game tied near the end of the first half but the Bulldogs put together a run that lasted until early in the second half to take control. season s BracketBuster matchup. The Panthers and Purple Eagles will play Sat., Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Niagara is a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and advanced to the title game of its league tournament a season ago, winning 26 games in the process. This year, the Purple Eagles have four players averaging in double figures. This is the eighth year UWM is participating in the BracketBusters event. The Bracket- Busters event also includes a return game for the Panthers at Niagara. Previously, return games were guaranteed for the following season, but return games for this year s BracketBusters event can take place either next season or during the campaign. Reviewing The Non-League Slate UWM s BracketBusters matchup with Niagara will mark the Panthers final regular season game against a non-league foe. So far, UWM is 8-4 against non-horizon League competition, with its losses to notable foes Wisconsin, Marquette, Western Kentucky and Indiana State. In fact, those teams have combined to go entering play this week. Milwaukee s eight regular season non-league wins are its most since the season, when the Panthers also won eight non-league regular season games. Ins And Outs UWM seems to find itself getting more shorthanded as the season rolls along. Allleague guard Tone Boyle has not played in a game this season because of a back injury and is redshirting. He will return in letting opponents shoot just 43 percent from the field. WSU is also forcing over 16 turnovers per game. Offensively, Vaughn Duggins leads the team in scoring at 14.7 points per game while Todd Brown isn t far behind at 12.8 points per contest. But the Raiders also get solid contributions from Troy Tabler (9.5 ppg), Cory Cooperwood (9.5 ppg) and N Gai Evans (8.3 ppg). 15-9, 8-5 Horizon Wright State s good play has started on the defensive end, where the Raiders are giving up only 60 points per game while Wright State s four-game winning streak came after a loss in Milwaukee. The Raiders are 9-1 at home this season. 2/11/10 Wright St. 3

Boyle originally hurt the back last February, an injury that caused him to miss UWM s game at Cleveland State. He returned to play the rest of last season and wound up averaging 13.2 points per game while shooting 36 percent from three-point range. Meanwhile, Deonte Roberts has not dressed for any of the last three games because of academic eligibility issues. Roberts has played in 20 games and is averaging 7.6 points per game. Finally, Tony Meier left the Jan. 29 win over Valpo during the second half after suffering an apparent ankle injury. He did not play Jan. 31 against Butler but did return to play eight minutes off the bench at Green Bay. Pretty Decent Decade! The first decade of the 21st Century was certainly a good one for the Panthers. In fact, UWM went over the 10-year period, including a mark in league play. That is a major step up from the decade of the 1990 s, when UWM went overall and in league play. The decade for UWM included three regular season league titles, three league tournament titles, three NCAA Tournaments, an NIT appearance, four postseason wins and four 20-win seasons. The League In The 2000 s Just two Horizon League schools got to 100 wins during the first decade of the 21st Century, with Butler collecting 121 and UWM tallying 103. Those two schools have also won or shared the last 10 regular-season league titles. The decade standings (noting YSU and Valpo were not in the league for the entire decade): W L Butler Milwaukee Wright State UIC Green Bay Detroit Loyola Cleveland State Youngstown State Valparaiso All-Decade Team To celebrate the highlights of the last decade for Panther men s basketball, UWM launched voting for its latest All-Decade Three NCAA Tournaments Four League Championships Team. The voting is now closed and team members will be unveiled Feb. 18 during a men s and women s basketball doubleheader at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The men s ballot consisted of 12 players, with fans able to pick five. The list includes: Boo Davis; Ricky Franklin; Jason Frederick; Chris Hill; Ronnie Jones; Ed Mc- Cants; Dylan Page; Paige Paulsen; Avery Smith; Adrian Tigert; Clay Tucker; and Joah Tucker. Plus, throughout January and February, the Verizon Wireless Panther BlogZone is featuring a look back at some of the greatest moments in Panther basketball over the last decade. Among recent entries are a look at the best buzzerbeaters in the decade, as well as the best opponents Panther teams faced over the last 10 years. About The Last Time Out Matt Smith and Rahmon Fletcher scored 13 points apiece and Green Bay limited UWM to just seven second-half field goals en route to a win Saturday night at the Resch Center. Anthony Hill and Ja Rob Mc- Callum each had 13 points for Milwaukee, which shot just 33 percent in the second half after a solid 48.5 percent effort in the first 20 minutes. In fact, the Panthers had just two field goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half but still found itself within three points with 2:30 to play. That was as close as the Panthers would get, though, as Fletcher hit a key three-point basket with 35 seconds remaining to restore a sevenpoint edge. Freshmen In The Lineup Ryan Haggerty made his debut in the starting lineup Saturday. After a strong eight-point performance off the bench Jan. 31 against Butler, the redshirt freshman played 30 minutes Saturday. He scored six points and added three rebounds and two assists in just his 11th appearance of the season. Haggerty is the third freshman to earn at least one start this year, joining true freshmen Lonnie Boga and Ja Rob McCallum as starters this season. This is the first time UWM has had at least three freshmen start a game in the same season since the campaign, when Clay Tucker, Ronnie Jones, Kalombo Kadima and Jason Frederick all started at least one game for UWM. Saturday s lineup was the fifth different starting lineup the Panthers have used this season.
5 2005 NCAA Sweet NCAA Second Round Oh So Close... Once again Saturday night, the Panthers found themselves in position to pull out a key road win but just couldn t get over the hump. Specifically, UWM was within three points with 2:30 remaining before falling. The Panthers have realistically had a chance to win every league game it has played besides one (@ Butler), including a pair of one-point road losses. At Valpo Dec. 31, UWM was up one with three seconds remaining before falling. At Cleveland State, Milwaukee led by 14 in the second half and still by four with 1:16 before losing by one. Last week against Butler, UWM was up seven in the second half and still within a point with 2:30 to play before coming up short. And, in home losses to both Loyola and Detroit, UWM led in the second half. Not So Many Threes While UWM has certainly made a concerted effort to pound the ball inside of late, the Panthers have still generally shown their abilities from distance. And, if the threes aren t falling, Milwaukee usually finds its way to the foul line. Well, Saturday s loss saw a bad combination of poor three-point shooting and limited trips the line, as the Panthers made just four 3-pointers and just four free throws. That is a combined season low, as in games with five or fewer three-pointers made, UWM had been in double figures in free throws made all but once (Marquette - 9) before Saturday. Meanwhile, the eight 3-pointers UWM has made over the last two games are the fewest in back-to-back games this season. Defense Not So Bad UWM continues to get pretty solid efforts on defense during the second half of the season. Green Bay shot just 35.1 percent from the field Saturday, the eighth opponent Milwaukee has held below 40 percent. The Saturday effort broke a brief slide by the Panther defense, as in the three games prior to that opponents had shot 45.7 percent from the floor while averaging 76 points. Still, Milwaukee has held four of their last eight opponents under 40 percent shooting. Do It All Ricky Senior Ricky Franklin is certainly shouldering much of the backcourt burden in the absence of the injured Tone Boyle this season. Franklin played much of the second half Saturday with four fouls but still played 33 minutes. That s actually the first time in the last six games where he played fewer than 39 minutes, including being on the floor for all 45 minutes in the overtime win over Wright State last month. Franklin leads UWM in scoring and assists while standing second on the team in rebounds. He has struggled in his last few games, making just 12 of his last 46 shots over the last three games. But, in the six games before that, Franklin made 37 of 70 shots overall, including 21 of 43 from three-point range while averaging 19.7 points per game. He also has posted eight 20-point efforts this season, including 20 or more in consecutive games from Jan Senior Matchup Thursday s game actually matches two of the top seniors in the Horizon League, with UWM s Ricky Franklin and Wright State s Todd Brown among the league s active career leaders in nearly every statistical category, with totals and rank among active league players below. Points Brown (1st); Franklin (3rd) Rebounds Brown (4th); Franklin (5th) Three-Pointers Made Brown (2nd); Franklin (3rd) Assists Franklin (3rd); Brown (7th) Steals Franklin (4th); Brown - 89 (7th) Boost From The Big Guys UWM s inside game continues to pay dividends. Saturday night at Green Bay, UWM scored 30 of its 54 points in the paint and Anthony Hill shared team-high scoring honors with 13 points. This came after Hill scored a collegiate-best 21 points in the loss to Butler Jan. 31. Two days before that, Jason Averkamp tallied a collegiate-best 22 points in the win over Valparaiso Friday, besting the 21 he scored against Valpo two seasons ago. James Eayrs has also reached double figures in four of his last eight games. But Hill has emerged as UWM s key interior offensive force, averaging 11 ppg in the last 15 games after averaging just 3.7 ppg in the first nine games of the year. That is what made the eight free throws UWM shot at Green Bay Saturday so surprising, as the Panthers had shot no fewer than 26 free throws in seven of its previous eight games before taking the court at the Resch Center. The Panthers have actually been pretty solid at getting to the free throw line all season long, tallying 24 or more free throw attempts 13 times already this year. For the season, UWM has made 60 more free throws than its opponents and is shooting 69.3 percent from the line. Team Numbers Notes UWM has been sending its opponent to the foul line substantially more in the last three games. In fact, UWM has been called for 64 fouls while opponents have scored 54 points from the line in the last three outings. In the five games before that, opponents scored only 35 total points from the line while UWM was called for only 69 fouls... the Panthers had 15 turnovers Saturday and now have committed 97 turnovers in the last six road games. In the last five home contests, UWM has only 57 turnovers... Milwaukee has outrebounded its opponent in 18 of 24 games and, dating back to last season, the Panthers have outrebounded their opponent in 31 of their last 40 contests. Meanwhile, UWM has also reached double figures in offensive rebounds 15 times... in UWM s 13 wins, it has made 263 free throws; in its 11 losses it has made just the Panthers have had 10 different players record at least one double-figure outing, with seven players collecting at least two double-digit games... UWM has had 16 double-figure individual efforts from its bench... its bench has outscored opponents in 18 of 24 games... the Panthers are now 7-1 this season and has won 18 of its last 21 games overall when scoring at least 70. Emptying The Notebook UWM got to the 80-point mark for the sixth time in the Jan. 29 win over Valpo. That is one more than the number of 80- point nights the Panthers had all of last season. Milwaukee did it just four times total over the and campaigns... UWM has also scored 90 or more points twice this season, the first time the Panthers have done that since the Three NCAA Tournaments Four League Championships season... Milwaukee turned the ball over just seven times in consecutive games against Miami and Wisconsin. The stretch marked the first time since the season where the Panthers had been in single digits in turnovers in back-to-back games... Dec. 3 against UIC, the Panthers shot just 29.2 percent from the field, the lowest in a Panther victory since Milwaukee shot 28.9 percent in a victory over Green Bay in the 2000 MCC Tournament. Meanwhile, the 57 points UWM scored in the win are the fewest in a Panther win in two seasons, with Milwaukee claiming a win over Detroit in UWM s 96 points vs. Texas St. are the most by the Panthers since Milwaukee claimed a win over Youngstown in The Bright Lights Of TV Time Warner Cable Sports 32 is again the home for UWM basketball during the season. The men s package includes 12 broadcasts on Sports 32 and, in addition to those games, UWM had a game at Youngstown State on ESPNU and a contest at Wisconsin that was be televised by the Big Ten Network. Remaining Sports 32 broadcasts include road games at Wright State, Loyola and UIC as well as a home game against Cleveland State. Sports 32 is also again the home for The Rob Jeter Show, which airs weekly on Wednesday at 5 p.m., with a number of repeat performances. Daron Sutton returns as the television play-by-play voice for the Panthers. This season, Sutton is joined by former Panther Adrian Tigert. Radio Waves Milwaukee men s basketball games are heard on NewsTalk 1130 WISN. Bill Johnson returns for his 11th season as the play-by-play voice. The WISN team for men s games also includes the return of Bob Brainerd as host of The Panthers Postgame Party, which airs live from Major Goolsby s. The expanded postgame show airs following every home men s game. Former Panther star Adrian Tigert will join Brainerd as co-host of the show. 14 Three NCAA Tournaments Four League Championships ROB JETER Head Coach 5th Season Rob Jeter has made his mark on the basketball program of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee after just four seasons in charge. Jeter started his head coaching career with a bang. He led his team to its third-straight Horizon League regular season title and its second-straight berth in the NCAA Tournament in Once in the tourney, Jeter guided the Panthers to a first-round win over Oklahoma before UWM was eliminated by eventual national champion Florida in the second round. That season marked a fourth-straight 20-win season for the Panthers, with the 22 victories the most by a first-year head coach in school history. Plus, he helped three of his players earn All- Horizon League honors, a school record, while also having three players earn league all-tournament team recognition. Following that first season, Jeter embarked on the process of rebuilding the Panthers roster. With seven seniors gone from the 2006 squad, he fielded a squad of 16 newcomers in UWM then added five wins to its total in and three more victories in In the process, the head coach constructed a young roster with a bright future. In fact, this past season, a pair of Panthers earned spots on the all-newcomer team and Jeter has seen four recruits earn those honors over the past three seasons. This most recent season saw some of UWM s most memorable victories in recent years. The Panthers set a school-record by overcoming a 24-point halftime deficit vs. Cal Davis to claim an improbable six-point win. Then, later in the season, UWM knocked off 21st-ranked Butler to claim its first-ever regular-season victory over a ranked foe. The Panthers also captured a win over Cleveland State a team that would advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and wound up winning 11 Horizon League games. Jeter has not only had a big impact on the court, but he has helped the program take great strides off the court. Jeter has built his Full-Court Club luncheons from audience of 30 at the beginning to regular crowds of more than 100 people throughout the last three years. He also spearheaded the outfitting of UWM s new locker room and team room in the Pavilion, including wooden lockers, furniture and a large-screen television. Plus, the program has raised ample funds for an upcoming trip to Europe and for other facilty-related improvements. Jeter s work as a head coach has already been recognized, as he was named the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division I Coach of the Year in 2006 and was inducted into the UW- Platteville Athletic Hall of Fame in September of He has also jumped into a number of charitable ventures off the court, including his extensive involvement in Shooting For A Cure, a 14 Wright St. 2/11/10 Wisconsin-based Coaches vs. Cancer event that debuted in the summer of Then, Jeter earned the honor of being an assistant coach for Team USA in the World University Games this summer. Working for Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan and alongside Miami (Fla.) coach Frank Haith, Jeter helped direct the team to a bronze medal in the event. Jeter returned to UWM as the 20th head coach in the school s history after serving for four years as an assistant coach and associate head coach at the University of Wisconsin. He previously served as an assistant at both UWM and Marquette after working and playing at Division III power UW-Platteville. Jeter worked under Ryan for 10 of his 11 years as an assistant coach, spending one year under Mike Deane at Marquette. At Wisconsin, Jeter served as the Badgers lead recruiter while also coordinating Wisconsin s scouting and academic efforts. In four seasons at Wisconsin, Jeter helped the Badgers to remarkable success. They won two regular season Big Ten championships and a Big Ten Tournament title. Wisconsin also made four-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including berths in the Sweet 16 in 2003 and the Elite Eight in Plus, Wisconsin averaged nearly 23 wins per season under Ryan and Jeter and
15 2005 NCAA Sweet NCAA Second Round posted a school-record 38-game homecourt winning streak. Jeter served on Ryan s staff for two seasons at UWM, recruiting just-departed Panthers Adrian Tigert and Chris Hill while helping to lay the foundation for success on the basketball court. Under Ryan and Jeter, UWM recorded its first two plus-.500 seasons since the early 1990 s while increasing attendance nearly 300 percent. Winning has never been a problem for Jeter. All told, he has been a part of 11 conference championships, including nine as a coach. He has won three national championships, including two as a coach. As a player at UW-Platteville, his teams went in four seasons. In his 11 years as an assistant coach, his teams posted a combined record, good for a.743 winning percentage. In league play, his teams recorded a record. One of the most popular questions asked of Jeter after taking the job in Milwaukee four years ago was the style of play he would employ. His first answer has always been easy - a winning style. But a closer look at history shows he ll likely continue to put all 94 feet of the floor to good use. In fact, as a player at UW-Platteville, Jeter played on a national championship team that averaged more than 97 points per game and pressed the entire game. In four years as a player, Jeter s teams cracked the 100-point mark 29 times, including a record-setting 149-point outing. Jeter s collegiate basketball life started at UW-Platteville, where he played for Ryan from and then was an assistant from As a player for the Pioneers, Jeter captained the team to the 1991 NCAA Division III title and was named to the All-Final Four team. A two-time All-Wisconsin State University Conference selection and two-time All- Midwest Region choice, Jeter still holds UW-Platteville records for career field goal percentage (.601) and consecutive starts (89). Jeter was also named to the Wisconsin State University Conference honor roll three times. As an assistant coach, Jeter helped guide the Pioneers to a overall record, two NCAA Division III titles and four conference championships. In addition to his coaching duties at UW-Platteville, Jeter coordinated the program s academic, recruiting and scouting efforts and directed the Bo Ryan Basketball Camps. He was also an admissions coordinator at the school. In between playing and coaching at UW-Platteville, Jeter spent a season playing basketball overseas. He starred for the Olivias Futebol Clube in Portugal in , leading the Portuguese national league in scoring. Jeter was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on May 15, 1969, and then grew up in Chicago, Ill., as part of an athletic family. His late dad, Bob, is a member of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and his brother, Carlton, played basketball alongside Rob in Platteville. Jeter attended high school at Quigley South Preparatory School and then headed to UW-Platteville, where he earned his business administration degree in Jeter also received a master s degree in adult education from the school in December of Jeter and his wife, Deanna, have two sons, Robert and Jonathan.
