3 Game #25 The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men s basketball team continues a threegame homestand by welcoming Wright State to the Klotsche Center Saturday night. A Quick Scout Wright State is 16-8 and 7-4 in the Horizon League... the Raiders claimed a double overtime win at Green Bay Thursday night... WSU s only lead of either extra session came on a J.T. Yoho three-pointer late in the second OT... veteran Cole Darling leads the team in scoring at 10.5 points per game... Darling was the league player of the week in December while Yoho and Jerran Young have each garnered newcomer of the week honors... Wright State is fielding one of the 20 youngest teams in college basketball... WSU was picked to finish ninth in the league. Matchup Notes UWM holds a all-time lead over Wright State thanks to having won 16 of the last 25 meetings between the two schools... UWM has beaten WSU 14-straight times in Milwaukee, though the game went to overtime and the game was decided by a single point... meanwhile, the Panthers have not won in Dayton since last season, each team won on its homecourt in a rout. UWM claimed a win in Milwaukee before Wright State captured a win in Dayton... just as striking was Wright State s shooting difference in the two games, with the Raiders shooting only 25 percent in Milwaukee but 57 percent in Dayton. The First Meeting Jordan Aaron s runner at the horn bounced off the backboard and rim before falling away, allowing Wright State to hang on for a win over UWM Jan. 5 at the Nutter Center. The Panthers led much of the way but a late three-pointer by Cole Darling gave Wright State an advantage it would never give back. Demetrius Harris had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead Milwaukee, with Paris Gulley adding 13 and Jordan Aaron 12. Reggie Arceneaux had 15 points and Darling 14 for the Raiders. Back Home Again UWM is playing all of its home games at the on-campus Klotsche Center this season, a spot the Panthers have traditionally had a distinct homecourt advantage. Milwaukee has won 23 of its last 30 non-exhibition games in the building. Going further back, UWM is in its last 66 non-exhibition contests in the building. The Panthers have not called the building their permanent home since the season and Rob Jeter has been the head coach for just 13 regular season games in the building. Prior to this season, the last time UWM played a regular-season Horizon League game in the building was the end of the season, a year Milwaukee played three regular season games on campus. The Panthers have won 14 of their last 18 games over Horizon League foes at the Klotsche Center. Alumni Night The Panthers are welcoming back all of their men s basketball alumni Saturday night. A group of more than 30 former players is expected to be attendance, with many of them playing in the annual Alumni Game, which starts at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Klotsche Center. UWM will also recognize a pair of former teams for their accomplishments. The 2003 NCAA Tournament team - the first Division I men s basketball tournament team in school history - will recognized at halftime. Plus, the team that won 23 games and scored UWM s only win over Wisconsin will be honored during the contest. There is also an NCAA Tournament Commemorative Poster for all fans in attendance. Hall Of Famers Saturday is also Hall of Fame Night, as the five newest members of the Bud Haidet Athletics Hall of Fame will be recognized. Nick Gretz, Antou Jallow, Josha (Krueger) Kruvand, Jerry Stern and Maria Viall are all formally being inducted into the Hall of Fame Saturday morning at the Milwaukee Athletic Club. BracketBuster Setup UWM will play IUPUI in the annual Bracket- Busters event, with all of the matchups in the event set Monday. The game is set for Sat., Feb. 23, in Indianapolis, Ind. The contest will tip off at 3 p.m. EST/2 p.m. CST. As part of the BracketBusters contract, IUPUI will play a return game in Milwaukee either next season or in This season, IU- PUI is 6-19 and has dropped nine-straight Game Notes Page 3 Season/Career Totals Starts Career Jordan Aaron Demetrius Harris James Haarsma Paris Gulley Kyle Kelm J.J. Valparaiso Detroit Green Bay Youngstown State Cleveland State Milwaukee Loyola UIC Wright State 86 games. The Panthers and Jaguars squared off at the U.S. Cellular Arena a year ago, with Milwaukee claiming a win. Numbers, Tips And Trends - Milwaukee has used seven different starting lineups this season. The Panthers have had 11 players make at least one start, with seven of those players making their first start at UWM. - UWM has started to go deeper into its bench of late after a run of games where Milwaukee used just seven players. Ten Panthers played in the games at Loyola and Valparaiso last week while eight played Thursday against Detroit. A variety of players continue to get an opportunity to shine, as walk-on Quinton Gustavson play 10 minutes at Valpo and sophomore Evan Richard played 17 minutes Thursday night. - Milwaukee has had 12 players appear in at least 12 of the 24 games this season. Two Panthers have still logged heavy minutes this season. Paris Gulley is averaging 36.8 minutes per contest while Jordan Aaron is averaging Gulley had played 38 or more minutes in seven-straight games - including four-straight outings of 40 minutes - until playing 32 minutes at Loyola and 36 at Valpo. He was back to playing the full 40 Thursday night. Aaron had played 37 or more minutes in each of the last five games, including a pair of 40-minute outings, until playing just 23 minutes Thursday. - The Panthers have led at halftime in 11 of their 23 games this season but have won just four of those 11 games. - Freshman J.J. Panoske has started the last seven games while Austin Arians made the second start of his career last Friday. Panoske is averaging 6.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in league play while Arians is at 7.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per contest against league foes. - Demetrius Harris has started 22 of 24 games this season and has tallied a pair of double-doubles. He had 10 points and six rebounds Thursday and is averaging 9.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in league play. The senior has 207 points and Game Notes Page rebounds this season, easily surpassing the 39 points and 33 boards he collected all of last year. - Injuries continue to impact Milwaukee. Kyle Kelm missed the game with Ohio Dominican because of a concussion and was limited early in the season by a foot injury. Paris Gulley missed the first six games with a broken hand. Thierno Niang is sidelined indefinitely with a back injury that has plagued him since late November. And, Christian Wolf has not dressed for the last few games because of a concussion. The Last Time Out Jason Calliste scored 22 points and Detroit held off a valiant effort by UWM to claim an win Thursday night at the Klotsche Center. The Panthers battled back from an early 16-point deficit to capture a threepoint lead midway through the second half. Milwaukee then had a chance to tie the game in the final minute before Detroit salted away the victory with five free throws. James Haarsma scored 26 points off the bench to lead the Panthers. So Happy For Haarsma Senior James Haarsma has been in a season-long shooting slump and entered Thursday s game with Detroit shooting just 33.1 percent from the field. Well, Thursday, he did all he could to will the Panthers to an upset win, scoring a season-best 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting. He also added four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Plus, the senior went past 1,000 points for his Division I career, combining his two seasons and Evansville and his nearly two years in Milwaukee. It seemed only a matter of time before Haarsma would break out with a big game, as a year ago he shot 52.5 percent overall and made 31 three-pointers. Bench Brigade The Thursday night effort by James Haarsma came off the bench, as the Panthers continue to get strong performances from their reserves. In the game with Detroit, the Panthers bench edge was In fact, UWM s two best individual scoring outputs of the season have come from the bench, and both thanks to guys that have often started. Haarsma s 26 points is second on that list to the 34 Jordan Aaron scored in a reserve role against Ohio Dominican in

5 late December. UWM has now had 13 double-figure efforts from its bench this season. The full list: Austin Arians (5) - UALR; 10 vs. Rider; 19 vs. Cleveland State; 15 vs. Youngstown State; Loyola Jordan Aaron (2) - 34 vs. Ohio Dominican; Valparaiso Kyle Kelm (2) - 15 vs. Mary; 11 vs. Davidson Evan Richard (1) - 11 vs. Rider J.J. Panoske (1) - Wisconsin Demetrius Harris (1) - 14 vs. Ohio Dominican Ryan Haggerty (1) - 12 vs. Cleveland State James Haarsma (1) - 26 vs. Detroit Second Half Struggles The second half has been a bugaboo for the Panthers much of the season. UWM was decent in the second 20 minutes Thursday night against Detroit, but still found itself outscored, Plus, in that second 20 minutes, Milwaukee made six 3-pointers after having been just 3-of-38 on three-pointers in the second halves of its previous four games. Milwaukee did avoid a huge run going against it in the second half. UWM has allowed a 19-0 run by UIC, an 18-2 burst by Green Bay, a 20-0 run by Loyola, and a 23-3 explosion by Valpo that bridged the late first and early second halves. The W s And The L s As one might expect, there are certainly some stark statistical differences in Milwaukee s five wins compared to its 19 losses: W s L s FG% Def FG% FG% FG s Made/GM PPG PPG Against Making His Point Jordan Aaron continues to be a presence in the backcourt and has started to show off his distribution skills. The junior dished out 11 assists vs. Cleveland State - tying the collegiate-high he set against Northern Illinois. He had eight more assists against Youngstown State and has had five or more assists eight times this season. He has struggled shooting the ball in league play, making just 33.6 percent of his shots. But he has a pretty strong track record of scoring this season, including 34 points vs. Ohio Dominican. Waiting In The Wings UWM now has a total of five players that will be added to the active roster when the season arrives. Steve McWhorter transferred to UWM from Indiana State this summer and is practicing with the team while sitting out of games due to NCAA transfer regulations. Matt Tiby, a transfer from Kirkwood Community College, joined the Panther roster at the start of the second semester and will be practicing with the team while maintaining three seasons of college eligibility. Three other players signed National Letters of Intent during the fall signing period, as Trinson White of Milwaukee, Cody Wichmann of Pulaski and Brett Prahl of East Troy all officially agreed to join the Panthers Game Notes Page Milwaukee Basketball Quick Facts General Information School: University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee City/Zip: Milwaukee, WI Founded: 1885 Enrollment: 30,000 Nickname: Panthers Colors: Black and Gold Arena: Klotsche Center (3,400) Affiliation NCAA Division I Conference: Horizon League Chancellor: Michael Lovell Athletic Director: Andy Geiger Senior Woman Administrator: Kathy Litzau Ticket Manager: Brian Morgan Athletics Phone: Ticket Phone: Basketball History First Year of Basketball: 1896 Overall all-time record: First Year In Division I: 1990 Division I Record: NCAA Appearances/Last Appearance: 3/2006 Last NCAA opponent/result: def. 13 rob JETER Head Coach 8th Season Overall League Rob Jeter has made his mark on the basketball program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee during his seven seasons in charge. The Jeter File As A Head Coach Seven seasons at UWM 2011 League Coach Of The Year 2006 and 2011 WBCA Coach Of The Year 2011 finalist for Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year Award 2011 finalist for Ben Jobe Award 2011 finalist for Skip Prosser Man of The Year Award Three 20-win seasons Won regular season title in 2011 Won regular season and tournament titles in 2006 Beat Oklahoma in NCAA Tournament First Round in 2006 Set UWM record for first-year head coach with 22 wins As An Assistant Coach Helped Team USA to bronze medal in 2009 World University Games Part of four NCAA Tourney teams and two Big Ten titles at Wisconsin Badgers made it to Elite Eight (2005) and Sweet 16 (2003) During two seasons at UWM, helped Panthers post the first back-to-back plus-.500 seasons since early 1990 s UWM advanced to semis of league tourney for first time At Platteville, Pioneers won two NCAA Division III National Titles and compiled a record As A Player Captained the 1991 Platteville team that won NCAA D III National Title Named to All-WSUC, All-Midwest Region and All-Final Four teams UWP record-holder for career field goal percentage and consecutive starts Played professionally in Portugal That mark has now led the Panthers to a pair of 20-win seasons in the past three years and two-straight postseason berths. This past year, UWM finished and claimed a spot in the College Basketball Invitational. Kaylon Williams was named to the all-league team and Ryan Allen to the all-defensive squad. In , Jeter directed his team to wins in their final nine league regular season games, earning the regular season league title along with the top seed and hosting rights for the league tournament. He also collected his 100th career win in the regular season finale. Jeter was then recognized widely for his efforts, earning League Coach of the Year honors as well as being named the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division I Coach of the Year. He was also a finalist for the Hugh Durham Coach of the Year Award, the Ben Jobe Award and the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award. The most recent seasons have been more key steps on a productive journey by Jeter in Milwaukee. After starting his head coaching career with a league title and an NCAA Tournament win, he rebuilt the Milwaukee roster back into a league-championship contender. He increased the number of overall wins for three-straight seasons and now has won 59 games over the last three years. Jeter is also one of just two coaches in UWM history to lead his teams to three postseason berths and three 20-win seasons. Jeter started his head coaching career with a bang. He led his team to its third-straight Horizon League regular season title, its second-straight league tournament crown and its second-straight berth in the NCAA Tournament in Once in the tourney, Jeter guided the Panthers to a first-round win over Oklahoma before UWM was eliminated by eventual national champion Florida in the second round in Jacksonville. That season marked a fourth-straight 20-win season for the Panthers, with the 22 victories the most by a first-year head coach in school history. Plus, he helped three of his players earn All-Horizon League honors, a school record, while also having three players earn league all-tournament team recognition. Following that first season, Jeter embarked on the difficult process of rebuilding the Panthers roster. With seven seniors gone from the 2006 squad, he fielded a squad of 16 newcomers in UWM then added five wins to its total in , three more victories in and three more wins in UWM has won 19 and 20 games in the two seasons since. Over the last four years, UWM has won 45 league regular season contests and has claimed some memorable victories in and out of the conference. The Panthers have four wins over Butler in that time and set a school-record by overcoming a 24-point halftime deficit vs. Cal Davis to claim an improbable six-point win. Jeter has also had the chance to take his coaching talents to an international level, serving as an assistant coach for Team USA in the World University Games in The U.S., with former UWM head man Bo Ryan serving as head coach and former Miami (Fla.) head coach Frank Haith serving as another assistant, lost just one time and captured a bronze medal Game Notes Page 13

14 Jeter s work as a head coach has regularly been recognized, as he was named the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division I Coach of the Year in 2006 and was inducted into the UW-Platteville Athletic Hall of Fame in September of He was also recently named an inductee into the inaugural hall of fame class for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and his 1991 National Championship team from Platteville was inducted into the school s hall of fame this past year. Jeter s impact has also been felt off the court. He directed a major fundraising campaign that sent the Panthers on a 10- day trip to Italy in 2010, while he has also built his Full-Court Club luncheons from audiences of 30 at the beginning to regular crowds of more than 100 people. He also spearheaded the outfitting of UWM s new locker room and team room in the Pavilion, including wooden lockers, furniture and a large-screen television. Plus, his fundraising efforts have helped enhance the team s academic support and sports medicine efforts, while also upgrading various aspects of team travel. He has also jumped into a number of charitable ventures off the court, including his extensive involvement in Shooting For A Cure, a Wisconsin-based Coaches vs. Cancer event that debuted in the summer of Jeter is also a regular at Milwaukeearea community events, including the annual Fellowship Open. Jeter returned to UWM as the 20th head coach in the school s history after serving for four years as an assistant coach and associate head coach at the University of Wisconsin. He previously served as an assistant at both UWM and Marquette after working and playing at Division III power UW-Platteville. Jeter worked under Ryan for 10 of his 11 years as an assistant coach, spending one year under Mike Deane at Marquette. At Wisconsin, Jeter served as the Badgers lead recruiter while also coordinating the scouting and academic efforts. In four seasons at Wisconsin, Jeter helped the Badgers to remarkable success. They won two regular season Big Ten championships and a Big Ten Tournament title. Wisconsin also made four-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including berths in the Sweet 16 in 2003 and the Elite Eight in Jeter served on Ryan s staff for two seasons at UWM, recruiting Panther stars Adrian Tigert and Chris Hill while helping to lay the foundation for success on the basketball court. Under Ryan and Jeter, UWM recorded its first two plus-.500 seasons since the early 1990 s while increasing attendance nearly 300 percent. Winning has never been a problem for Jeter. All told, he has been a part of 12 conference championships, including 10 as a coach. He has won three national championships, including two as a coach. As a player at UW-Platteville, his teams went in four seasons. In his 11 years as an assistant coach, his teams posted a combined record, good for a.743 winning percentage. In league play, his teams recorded a record. Jeter s collegiate basketball life started at UW-Platteville, where he played for Ryan from and then was an assistant from As a player for the Pioneers, Jeter captained the team to the 1991 NCAA Division III title and was named to the All-Final Four team. A twotime All-WSUC selection and two-time All- Midwest Region choice, Jeter still holds UW-Platteville records for career field goal percentage (.601) and consecutive starts (89). Jeter was also named to the WSUC honor roll three times. As an assistant coach, Jeter helped guide the Pioneers to a overall record, two NCAA Division III titles and four conference championships. In addition to his coaching duties at UW-Platteville, Jeter coordinated the program s academic, recruiting and scouting efforts and directed the Bo Ryan Basketball Camps. He was also an admissions coordinator at the school. In between playing and coaching at UW- Platteville, Jeter spent a season playing basketball overseas. He starred for the Olivias Futebol Clube in Portugal in , leading the Portuguese league in scoring. Jeter was born in Pittsburgh on May 15, 1969, and then grew up in Chicago as part of an athletic family. His late dad, Bob, is a member of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and his brother, Carlton, played basketball alongside Rob in Platteville. He attended high school at Quigley South before earning both his bachelor s and master s degrees from UW-Platteville.
