1 Game #23 Wright State (14-8, Milwaukee (11-11, 6-5) Sun. Jan p.m. CST U.S. Cellular Arena Milwaukee, Wis. The Hot List The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men s basketball team continues a three-game homestand with a Sunday afternoon contest against Wright State. The Panthers used a thrilling comeback to claim a win over Detroit Friday night in front of a national television audience. UWM trailed by as many as 14 points. Milwaukee has now won two-straight games and is seeking its first three-game winning streak since beating UC Davis, Niagara and Northern Iowa in a six-day span in November. In its last eight wins, UWM is shooting 50 percent from the field and scoring 79.4 points per contest. In their last seven losses, the Panthers are shooting just 34.2 percent from the field and averaging 51.7 points per game. The Panthers have shot 50 percent or better six times this season after converting on 54.4 percent of their shots in last Sunday s win at Butler. But, Milwaukee has also shot less than 30 percent three times, including a 28.3 percent effort at Valpo last Friday that saw the Panthers miss their first 12 shots and go almost 14 minutes into the game without a field goal. UWM split the difference and shot an even 40 percent in the win over Detroit Friday. UWM s two most consistent offensive performers of late have been Tony Meier and Kaylon Williams. Meier has been in double figures in eight of the last 10 games and is in the top five in the league in both overall field goal shooting and three-point field goal shooting. Meanwhile, Williams has been in double figures in six of his last eight games and is averaging 6.0 assists per contest in his last eight outings. The Panthers have no one in the top 10 in the league in scoring but three players (Anthony Hill, Tone Boyle and Tony Meier) rank in the top 20. 3 Game #23 The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men s basketball team continues a threegame homestand with a Sunday afternoon contest against Wright State. A Quick Look At The Raiders Wright State is 14-8 overall and 7-3 in league play following a thrilling win at Green Bay Friday night. The Raiders have now won 11 of their last 14 overall and Friday marked their fifth road win of the season. Defense has been the calling card for WSU throughout the season, with the Raiders allowing just 60.3 points per game. Three players average in double figures for Wright State, led by Vaughn Duggins at 16.0 points per game. Matchup History UWM holds a all-time lead over Wright State thanks to having won 14 of the last 21 meetings between the two schools... UWM has beaten WSU 12-straight times in Milwaukee, though last year s game went to overtime after UWM trailed by 14 points... meanwhile, the Panthers have not won in Dayton since Ja Rob McCallum averaged 9.0 points per game in two meetings with the Raiders last season... Tone Boyle averaged 8.0 points per game in three meetings with WSU two seasons ago, but Boyle shot just 27.6 percent from the field. First Time With The Raiders Cooper Land scored 21 points and Wright State made 11 three-pointers to claim a win over UWM Dec. 30 at the Nutter Center. The Raiders scored the final seven points of the first half and turned that into a game-changing 29-8 run in controlling the final 20 minutes of the contest. Wright State wound up making 56.5 percent of its shots from the field overall while limiting the Panthers to a 34.6 percent clip. UWM made just six of 27 shots in the second half. Tony Meier had 15 points but was the only Milwaukee player in double figures. Walking Wounded UWM was able to use its full compliment of players in Friday s win over Detroit, with three guys overcoming injuries and a lack of practice time to play in the game. Ja Rob McCallum made his 15th start of the season Friday after leaving last Sunday s win over Butler. He was poked in the eye and officially suffered a lacerated eye. He missed practice during the week and was still sporting a black eye Friday night. He had six points in 25 minutes. Meanwhile, Jerard Ajami and Lonnie Boga both played Friday off the bench after sitting out the Butler game with injuries. Ajami (knee) had two points, three assists and four rebounds in 13 key minutes while Boga (ankle) had a pair of rebounds in three minutes of play. Boga has actually missed three of the last six games while battling the injury. Happy To Be Home The Panthers are in the middle of a threegame homestand after playing eight of their last 12 games away from home. Milwaukee is now 6-4 at home this season and is now in regular season and postseason contests at The Cell since its return in Even better, if you combine games at both the Klotsche Center and The Cell, UWM is in league home contests over the last 11-plus seasons. Rob Jeter s teams are at home. BracketBuster Announcement UWM already knows it will be going on the road for this season s BracketBusters date but the Panthers are expected to finally find out their opponent sometime Monday. The event includes 114 teams with 11 games nationally televised. Officially games can be played anytime between Feb. 18 and 20, though a large majority of the games will be played on Sat. Feb. 19. The event also includes a return game to Milwaukee by the Panthers opponent either next season or in the season. A Decade Of Horizon Success The last 10 years has found UWM establishing itself as one of the top men s basketball programs in the Horizon League. In fact, starting with the season, Milwaukee has the second-most league wins among league schools and is one of only two schools (Butler) to average more than 10 league wins per season. UWM has been below.500 in league play just once in 10 years - only Butler and Wright State can also make that claim. And, Milwaukee has won 10 or more league games in seven of 10 years, finishing in the top four seven times while winning three regular season league crowns. W L Butler Milwaukee Wright State Green Bay Detroit UIC Cleveland State Loyola Youngstown State Valparaiso Career Watch As the season moves past the halfway point, a number of record chases and career marks have come into focus. - Senior Tone Boyle has fallen just behind Anthony Hill for the team leading in scoring, but he is trying to become the first Panther to lead the team in scoring in two different seasons since Clay Tucker led the team in three-straight seasons in the early 2000 s. If someone else leads the team, it would be the eighth-straight season where a different player led the Panthers in scoring. - Senior Anthony Hill is up to 432 rebounds, trying to become just the 14th Panther to reach 500 rebounds in his career. The 432 rebounds are eighth on UWM s Division I list, with Ricky Franklin seventh at 492. Hill has also now played in 109 games and will break into the top 10 in school history if he reaches 111 appearances. - Junior Kaylon Williams has 106 assists through the first 22 games. That tally would have led the team at the end of nine of the previous 12 seasons. He is on pace to collect over 140 assists, which would put him in the top three of UWM s Division I single season history. - Junior Tony Meier will make his 72nd start Sunday against Wright State, inching him toward the top 10 on UWM s Division I career start list. Pat McCabe is 10th with 74 starts. Last Time Out Tone Boyle scored 16 points and Tony Meier scored 10 of his 12 points over the Page 4 Game Notes Wright State 1/30 final five minutes of the game to give the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee a come-from-behind win over Detroit Friday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The Panthers trailed by 10 points with eight minutes to play and by eight with five minutes to go but rallied to pull out the victory. Ryan Allen s inside hoop gave Milwaukee the lead for good with just under three minutes remaining, and six free throws in the final minute secured the win for the Panthers. Oh What A Comeback! UWM lost the first seven times it trailed at halftime this season, but now Milwaukee is making a habit of coming back after being down at the break. The Panthers did it for the second-straight outing on Friday night, but overcoming a one-point halftime deficit only tells a small part of the story. UWM had recovered from a 14-point deficit to pull within one at the break, then found itself down 10 with eight minutes to play. The deficit was still eight points with five minutes left, but Milwaukee finished the game on an 18-5 run. Tony Meier and Kaylon Williams, both of whom had struggled the entire game, provided big sparks in the closing moments. Meier had all 12 of his points in the final eight minutes, with 10 of those points coming in the final five minutes. Williams had four points and an assist without committing a turnover over the final five minutes. Maybe The Start Of A Streak? Friday s win over Detroit marked the second-straight victory for the Panthers, the first time they have won back-to-back games since beating Detroit and Butler at the beginning of the month. Now Milwaukee is setting out in search of its third-straight win, which would mark its first three-game winning streak since November. In that case, UWM beat UC Davis, Niagara and Northern Iowa in a span of six days. Season Sweeps UWM s win over Detroit Friday night completed a regular season series sweep of the Titans. It is the second opponent the Panthers have swept this year, with Milwaukee collecting a season sweep of Butler with its win at Hinkle Fieldhouse last Sunday. That means UWM has swept the teams picked to finish one-two in the

5 league in the preseason poll. Milwaukee also won its first game of the season against Youngstown State and UIC, meaning Milwaukee could sweep as many as four league opponents this season. Roller Coaster... Of Hoops The Panthers have now gone 8-7 in their last 15 games and have certainly experienced all of the ups and downs you might think accompany a near-split of wins and losses. The stats from these last 15 games paint a very clear picture of success when the Panthers have won, and a very clear picture of trouble when the Panthers have come up on the short end. 8 W s 7 L s FG Pct FG Pct. Defense Pt. FG Pct Pt. FG Pct. Def Pt. FG Made PPG Asst/TO Ratio Double Time Perhaps UWM s ups and downs this season are best summarized by simply looking at some point totals in back-to-back games this season. Exhibit A would be this past weekend, which saw the Panthers double their scoring output in less than 48 hours. UWM scored 43 points at Valpo Friday then scored 86 at Butler Sunday. Yet, doubling the point total isn t even as good as it s gotten for Milwaukee, which went from 40 points at Wisconsin Dec. 8 to 82 points at South Dakota State Dec. 11. And, falling just short of that increase was the jump on the Wright State/Detroit road trip, when the Panthers scored 44 against the Raiders and 84 against the Titans. There s Something About Butler Considering the success of the Bulldogs in recent seasons, BU likely absorbs the best effort of many teams. But, Milwaukee seems to have found a few answers to solving the riddle of Butler. UWM s win Jan. 3 snapped a 22-game regular season Horizon League winning streak for the Bulldogs. But, Milwaukee was also the last league team to beat Butler in a regular season game before that streak started. Now, with last Sunday s victory, the Panthers have handed Butler three of their last four league losses. Plus, UWM became the first team to beat Butler twice in the regular season since Anthony Hill has also been a force against the Bulldogs of late, scoring 18, 21, 15, 22 and 18 points in his last five games against Butler. Triple-Double Trouble Junior Kaylon Williams has been as-advertised for UWM this season and he seems to bring his best efforts when the Panthers face off with Butler. Certainly the highlight of recent games was his triple-double of 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the win over the Bulldogs Jan. 3. It was the first triple-double by a Panther since Marc Mitchell had two of them during the campaign, and Williams became the first Panther to have 10 or more assists in a game since Cyrus Caldwell had 11 against Fairleigh Dickinson in Williams nearly outdid himself in Milwaukee Quick Facts General Information School: University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee City/Zip: Milwaukee, WI Founded: 1885 Enrollment: 30,000 Nickname: Panthers Colors: Black and Gold Arena: U.S. Cellular Arena (10,783) Klotsche Center (3,500) Affiliation NCAA Division I Conference: Horizon League Chancellor: Mike Lovell (interim) Athletic Director: Dave Gilbert (interim) Senior Woman Administrator: Kathy Litzau Ticket Manager: Brian Morgan Athletics/Tickets Phone: / History First Year of : 1896 Overall all-time record: First Year In Division I: 1990 Division I Record: NCAA Appearances/Last Appearance: 3/2006 Last NCAA Results: def. 6 the second matchup with Butler Sunday, scoring 16 points to go with 12 rebounds and six assists. Those are far from the only times Williams has made his presence known, though. He has a pair of 17-point performances in his last eight games and has made 18 of his last 35 three-point attempts. Top Performances From T Meier Junior Tony Meier has put together an excellent junior campaign. Friday, he recovered from a scoreless first 32 minutes to score 12 in the final eight minutes, with 10 of those points coming in the final five minutes. He has now reached double figures in eight of his last 10 games and has scored 20 or more points four times in the last 13 outings. He is averaging 11.7 points per game, which is 18th in the league, while he is also in the top five in the league in field goal shooting and three-point field goal shooting while sitting in the top 10 in three-pointers made. Meier s season totals include 14 games with 50 percent of better shooting from the field. He has also had six of more rebounds eight times. From Way Downtown UWM has been quiet from three-point range in its last three games, shooting a combined 14-of-58 from distance. But, UWM is still second in the league in threepointers made overall, averaging 7.4 makes per game. The Panthers are also second in three-point field goal percentage, making 35.4 percent of their long range attempts. In league only games, Milwaukee has made 87 threes in 11 games. A close look at the individual numbers shows a team very capable of keeping up this pace of hitting from long range. Senior Tone Boyle has made four or more in a game 10 times, including his seven against Bowling Green Dec. 18. Ja Rob McCallum has made four or more three-pointers in a game six times in his brief career, while Tony Meier has now made three or more three-pointers in a game 10 times. Lonnie Boga has made three or more three-pointers four times and Kaylon Williams has made four 3 s in a game three times this season. Also From The Notebook UWM has three players in the top 20 in the league in scoring (Anthony Hill, Tone Boyle and Tony Meier)... Boyle is second in the league in three-pointers made... at South Dakota State Dec. 11, the Panthers made 27-of-43 shots overall for a 62.8 percent shooting clip. That was the third-best shooting tally in the school s Division I history and the first time the Panthers shot better than 60 percent since a win over Prairie View in the 14-of-23 (60.9 percent) performance from beyond the arc was the fifth-best in school history... the Panthers have shot 50 percent or better six times this season but have shot less than 30 percent three times... Tone Boyle s seven 3-pointers against Bowling Green Dec. 18 were the most by a Panther since Avery Smith made eight at Oakland in Dec Milwaukee is now in January under Rob Jeter and has been over.500 in all five Januarys under him... the Panthers are 2-0 in overtime this season and have won four-straight in OT. Don t Forget About These Guys The Panthers have a pair of players sitting out this season that are expected to be contributors in the campaign. Transfer James Haarsma is eligible to practice with the Panthers, but is sitting out due to NCAA transfer regulations. He will then have two years of college eligibility remaining. Haarsma averaged 10.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game at Evansville in Meanwhile, true freshman Evan Richard is planning to redshirt this season, leaving him four years of eligibility beginning next season. Richard is an all-state performer from Cuba City High School who shared the team-lead in scoring during the August trip to Italy. Future Panthers Shaquille Boga of St. Louis, Mo., and J.J. Panoske of Brodhead, Wis., have signed National Letters of Intent to play at UWM. The two highly-rated players will join the Panthers starting with the season. Boga, the brother of current Panther Lonnie Boga, is a 5-foot-11 left-handed point guard who is in his fourth year as a starter at McCluer High School. He starts his senior season with 1,390 points, putting him on pace to break Lonnie s school s all-time scoring record. Panoske, a 6-foot-10 forward, averaged 21.8 points per game as a junior and is ranked third among seniors in Wisconsin. Last season, he was a firstteam WBCA Division 2 all-state honoree while also earning honorable mention alldivisions all-state honors from the AP. 14 Rob Jeter 6th Season As Head Coach UW-Platteville 91 Rob Jeter has made his mark on the basketball program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee during his five seasons in charge. After starting his head coaching career with a league title and an NCAA Tournament win, Jeter has rebuilt the Milwaukee roster back into a league-championship contender. He has increased the number of wins in each of the last three seasons and, this past year, directed the Panthers to just the 10th 20-win season in school history. In fact, the 20 wins this past year are tied for the sixth-most in school history. This was also the second 20-win season in five years under Jeter, making him one of just three coaches in school history to direct two different teams to 20-win campaigns. Plus, Jeter has now moved to 82 career wins, the fifth-most wins by a coach in school history. Jeter started his head coaching career with a bang. He led his team to its thirdstraight Horizon League regular season title, its second-straight league tournament crown and its second-straight berth in the NCAA Tournament in Once in the tourney, Jeter guided the Panthers to a first-round win over Oklahoma before UWM was eliminated by eventual national champion Florida in the second round in Jacksonville. That season marked a fourth-straight 20- win season for the Panthers, with the 22 victories the most by a first-year head coach in school history. Plus, he helped three of his players earn All-Horizon League honors, a school record, while also having three players earn league all-tournament team recognition. squad of 16 newcomers in UWM then added five wins to its total in , three more victories in and three more wins this past season. In the process, the head coach has constructed a young roster with a bright future. In fact, Jeter has had four recruits earn league all-newcomer team honors while Ja Rob McCallum was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year by The Sporting News this past year. In all, four of the top 10 players in the rotation in were freshmen and his incoming recruiting class has been highly regarded. Over the last two years, UWM has won 21 league regular season contests and has claimed some memorable victories in and out of the conference. The Panthers knocked off nationally-ranked Butler in 2009 and set a school-record by overcoming a 24-point halftime deficit vs. Cal Davis to claim an improbable six-point win. Jeter has also had the chance to take his coaching talents to an international level, serving as an assistant coach for Team USA in the World University Games in The U.S., with former UWM head man Bo Ryan serving as head coach and Miami (Fla.) head man Frank Haith serving as another assistant, lost just one time and captured a bronze medal. The Jeter File As A Head Coach Five seasons at UWM Two 20-win seasons Won league title in 2006 Panthers beat Oklahoma in first round of NCAA Tournament in 2006 Set UWM record for first-year head coach with 22 wins As An Assistant Coach Helped Team USA to bronze medal in 2009 World University Games Part of four NCAA Tourney teams and two Big Ten titles at Wisconsin Badgers made it to Elite Eight (2005) and Sweet 16 (2003) During two seasons at UWM, helped Panthers post the first back-to-back plus-.500 seasons since early 1990 s UWM advanced to semifinals of league tourney for first time At Platteville, Pioneers won two NCAA Division III National Titles and compiled a record As A Player Captained the 1991 Platteville team that won NCAA D III National Title Named to All-WSUC, All-Midwest Region and All-Final Four teams UWP record-holder for career field goal percentage and consecutive starts Played professionally in Portugal For additional information, including career records, photo galleries and more, visit Following that first season, Jeter embarked on the difficult process of rebuilding the Panthers roster. With seven seniors gone from the 2006 squad, he fielded a Jeter has not only had a big impact on the court, but he has helped the program take great strides off the court. He directed a major fundraising campaign that sent the Page 14 Game Notes Wright State 1/30

15 Panthers on a 10-day trip to Italy this past summer, while he has also built his Full- Court Club luncheons from audiences of 30 at the beginning to regular crowds of more than 100 people throughout the last four years. He also spearheaded the outfitting of UWM s new locker room and team room in the Pavilion, including wooden lockers, furniture and a large-screen television. Plus, his fundraising efforts have helped enhance the team s academic support and sports medicine efforts, while also upgrading various aspects of team travel. Jeter s work as a head coach has already been recognized, as he was named the Wisconsin Coaches Association Division I Coach of the Year in 2006 and was inducted into the UW-Platteville Athletic Hall of Fame in September of He has also jumped into a number of charitable ventures off the court, including his extensive involvement in Shooting For A Cure, a Wisconsin-based Coaches vs. Cancer event that debuted in the summer of Jeter is also a regular at Milwaukeearea community events, including the annual Fellowship Open. Jeter returned to UWM as the 20th head coach in the school s history after serving for four years as an assistant coach and associate head coach at the University of Wisconsin. He previously served as an assistant at both UWM and Marquette after working and playing at Division III power UW-Platteville. Jeter worked under Ryan for 10 of his 11 years as an assistant coach, spending one year under Mike Deane at Marquette. At Wisconsin, Jeter served as the Badgers lead recruiter while also coordinating the scouting and academic efforts. In four seasons at Wisconsin, Jeter helped the Badgers to remarkable success. They won two regular season Big Ten championships and a Big Ten Tournament title. Wisconsin also made four-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including berths in the Sweet 16 in 2003 and the Elite Eight in Plus, Wisconsin averaged nearly 23 wins per season under Ryan and Jeter and posted a school-record 38-game homecourt winning streak. Jeter served on Ryan s staff for two seasons at UWM, recruiting Panther stars Adrian Tigert and Chris Hill while helping to lay the foundation for success on the basketball court. Under Ryan and Jeter, UWM recorded its first two plus-.500 seasons since the early 1990 s while increasing attendance nearly 300 percent. Winning has never been a problem for Jeter. All told, he has been a part of 11 conference championships, including nine as a coach. He has won three national championships, including two as a coach. As a player at UW-Platteville, his teams went in four seasons. In his 11 years as an assistant coach, his teams posted a combined record, good for a.743 winning percentage. In league play, his teams recorded a record. One of the most popular questions asked of Jeter after taking the job in Milwaukee five years ago was the style of play he would employ. His first answer has always been easy - a winning style. But a closer look at history shows he likes to put all 94 feet of the floor to good use. In fact, as a player at UW-Platteville, Jeter played on a national championship team that averaged more than 97 points per game and pressed the entire game. In four years as a player, Jeter s teams cracked the 100-point mark 29 times, including a record-setting 149-point outing. Jeter s collegiate basketball life started at UW-Platteville, where he played for Ryan from and then was an assistant from As a player for the Pioneers, Jeter captained the team to the 1991 NCAA Division III title and was named to the All-Final Four team. A two-time All-Wisconsin State University Conference selection and two-time All- Midwest Region choice, Jeter still holds UW-Platteville records for career field goal percentage (.601) and consecutive starts (89). Jeter was also named to the Wisconsin State University Conference honor roll three times. As an assistant coach, Jeter helped guide the Pioneers to a overall record, two NCAA Division III titles and four conference championships. In addition to his coaching duties at UW-Platteville, Jeter coordinated the program s academic, recruiting and scouting efforts and directed the Bo Ryan Camps. He was also an admissions coordinator at the school. In between playing and coaching at UW- Platteville, Jeter spent a season playing basketball overseas. He starred for the Olivias Futebol Clube in Portugal in , leading the Portuguese national league in scoring. Jeter was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on May 15, 1969, and then grew up in Chicago, Ill., as part of an athletic family. His late dad, Bob, is a member of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and his brother, Carlton, played basketball alongside Rob in Platteville. Jeter attended high school at Quigley South Preparatory School and then headed to UW-Platteville, where he earned his business administration degree in Jeter also received a master s degree in adult education from the school in December of Jeter and his wife, Deanna, have two sons, Robert and Jonathan.
